Revenge of the Savage Planet

Revenge of the Savage Planet is one of my favourite games of the year with its awesomely colourful and lighthearted alien planets and entertaining gameplay that's so packed with variety, it's hard to put it down once you take off.

Revenge of the Savage Planet turns out to be a consistent improvement of the first instalment, picking up exactly where it lacked, especially in terms of scope and accessibility. The five planets themselves are wonderfully varied and boast a high level of verticality. Added to that is a nice range of unlockable gadgets that provide previously unimagined mobility. What remains is a genuinely feel-good Metroidvania with a fast-paced story, plenty of variety, nice graphics, cool ideas, a strong soundtrack, plenty of humour, few flaws and a very flexible co-op mode that's compelling both online and offline. Bravo Racoon Logic!

Clearly inspired by the collectible games of the early 2000s, Revenge of the Savage Planet also celebrates Metroid 3D in a way that few dare to pay homage to. This is one of the most honest experiences without Samus Aran as the protagonist, even though it overdoes the amount of tasteless jokes in the story.

Revenge of the Savage Planet is a sequel that takes what made the first game work and elevates it with visual improvements, greater freedom of exploration, and a welcome expansion of co-op. The shift to third-person, nonsensical humor, and irreverent sci-fi atmosphere maintain the franchise's charm, while new gameplay features make the experience more fluid and strategic.

Revenge of the Savage Planet is an upgrade over its predecessor in nearly every way. Consistently rewarding exploration pushed me to poke around every corner of the worlds I visited, and often-fun combat encounters kept the experience fresh and engaging. The first game was a fun one-off experience, but its sequel is a far more complete and rewarding package that left me hungry for more savage planets to explore.

A sci-fi adventure characterized by light tones and fresh gameplay, capable of giving satisfaction… as long as you are a curious player. Curiosity is essential to better appreciate the multifaceted exploratory component of Revenge of the Savage Planet and discover all its secrets. If No Man’s Sky and Outer Wilds had a relationship, this would have been their legitimate child.

Revenge of the Savage Planet is nothing if not humorous, delivering abundant fun through its charming, colorful visuals and clever gadgets. While it leans a bit too much on open-world-map-cleaning mentality, it’s hard not to feel like a kid in a sci-fi kindergarten while playing.

Raccoon Logic’s latest release is a worthy sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet, delivering an entertaining experience through its engaging story, dynamic combat, inventive world design, and satisfying platforming. Revenge of the Savage Planet blends various well-executed elements into a cohesive whole, offering Sci-Fi fans hours of immersive gameplay.

The modest size of the team at Raccoon Logic becomes apparent sometimes – the awkward physics and occasionally funky enemy behaviour can hamper the gameplay mechanics. But this a goofy little treasure, a passion project for a small team bruised by their encounter with a corporate gorilla. They’re still here and Stadia is long gone. Who’s the monkey now?

In the end, Revenge of the Savage Planet doesn’t pretend to be a groundbreaking epic. Instead, it knows exactly what it is — a compact, weird, satirical space romp that pokes fun at genre clichés while delivering a solid gameplay experience. The mechanics are simple but polished, the humor outrageous but purposeful, and the world design vibrant enough to keep you wandering just a little longer than you intended. It may be a “metroidvania lite,” but in a sea of overly complex open-world titles and self-serious sci-fi shooters, Revenge of the Savage Planet stands out by refusing to take itself too seriously — and in doing so, it delivers something genuinely memorable. Not revolutionary, but certainly worth the trip.

Revenge of the Savage Planet is a really lovely action-adventure with plenty of hidden experiences. It's wonderfully chaotic, especially side-by-side with a friend, but can also be enjoyed alone if you just want to explore the unexplored planets at your own pace. It's a game that puts a smile on your face as it's just a happy game and doesn't work against the player it's playing with. So, if you liked Journey to the Savage Planet, this is a no-brainer - you won't be disappointed.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. And if this game is its developer's act of revenge, presumably aimed at Google for closing its original company, we’d say it's been served in a very cool way indeed. If you love sci-fi, if you love exploration, if you love having a laugh while you play with a partner, give it a go. You can thank us later.

Revenge of the Savage Planet wants to be the game you can sit on your couch and beat over a weekend with a friend, and that’s just perfect.

Revenge of the Savage Planet is a sequel that expands on the concepts of its predecessor with deep exploration and captivating visuals. Although I loved exploring every corner, what was handed to me with each new discovery was not that rewarding. As someone who played the first game, it lacked the boldness of the formula I experienced 5 years ago.

After our first foray into the Savage Planet, Revenge of the Savage Planet ups the ante with a more ambitious and well-rounded game offer. A 100-year journey that culminates in the exploration of an entire abandoned solar system at the hand of a large corporation. Its 3D metroidvania proposal includes platforms, combat, exploration and a large number of puzzles and collectibles that will help us achieve the desired ending... or succumb in the attempt. All this wrapped in a hooligan and irreverent humor that sometimes goes too far in its intention to criticize the world in which we live and in which we could live.

Revenge of the Savage Planet already looked to end on a pitch-perfect note, rewarding the time and effort I’d put into erecting an entire outpost – inclusive of my own customised living quarters and several small zoos – with utter abandonment. But then it managed an even greater late-game twist. One that’s inward-looking, AI-critical and ends on a credits song about shitting and pissing on company time. It’s exactly as dumb and brilliant as that sounds.

One of the best 3D Metroidvanias ever made, with the same endearing sense of humour as the original but several welcome improvements and a more substantial adventure.

I had a blast playing Revenge Of The Savage Planet. The varied planets are gorgeous, the goofy creatures are charming, and the absurdist Rick And Morty meets Tim And Eric humor lands more often than not. Exploring vibrant new worlds and cataloging all the flora and capturable fauna scratches an itch for any sci-fi fan that wishes they lived in a timeline where space exploration was possible. Unfortunately, while combat does bring some interesting things to the table with elemental synergies at play, the gunplay is pretty basic despite being a frequent and expected part of your expedition. It's serviceable, but never truly exciting. Some fairly pervasive framerate issues and a co-op mode that feels more like an afterthought also don't do the game any favors. Still, the game is definitely fun at the end of the day, and I'm going to stick around for the post-game content to continue cleaning up some quests after rolling credits. It doesn't soar quite as high as I might've hoped, but it's still a deep-space voyage worth embarking on.

A pointed satire of the human cost of corporate shenanigans, Revenge is a solid sequel that almost didn't exist but I'm sure glad it does.

A deliriously vibrant journey into absurdity, Revenge of the Savage Planet is a feast for the eyes and a treat for anyone looking for something unashamedly different, even if the game's Metroidvania style can dampen the escapism.

Colourful and over-the-top, Revenge of the Savage Planet captures much of the same space-faring japes that made us love Journey to the Savage Planet. Its humour doesn't hit quite in the same way, though, and a few annoyances with combat left us a little frustrated.
