It is a very solid 9/10 for me.
Capcom did a very good job with the new characters. Come on, who doesn't love Lady D, Duke or the sadistic Heisenberg?

The only reason I don't give a 10 is that I think they can do even better and hopefully RE 4 Remake can achieve that! Can't wait!

I have recently played RE8 Village, and although I liked the game in several ways, there are other points that make me hate it quite a lot. I’m old enough to know about the former "Biohazard" first person shooting games and the not so bad "Umbrella Chronicles", which gave us another side of the story at Spencer's Mansion. Knowing all this I must say that having all the resources and technology from these days, why don’t give the player the choice to change their view? Why a first person camera?.

Ethan Winters is a faceless character that never makes you get into his story, looking for his disappeared girlfriend Mia. (RE7). The feel of that game isn’t the essence of Resident Evil, but that is another tale.

RE8 VILLAGE plot is in the air, playing with european myths and literature, vampires, werewolves, monsters from the lake, etc... and Chriss Redfield attached to the story in desperate intent to turn this into Resident Evil, sorry but I don’t bite it.

The main facts and several parts of the story seem to be inspired by SILENT HILL, a father who is looking for his daughter in the middle of a strange place surrounded by demon-like creatures, but in this case all without salt and pepper. Maybe you can't find the resemblance with the old KONAMI title, but the truth is that this plot is weak, and certainly isn’t polish.

The good stuff, all the artwork is fantastic, even addictive, like Lady Dimitrescu and her castle. The game is fun but is it really a Resident Evil game? .

I can't give it more than 5 it would be a treason to all that deep plots and amazing characters from the main RE franchise,

After having two titles followed by unrestrained action, the series returned to its origin in VII, what was great!!
But now, going back to follow the same path that drove fans away.
The great villain of the game, extremely cartoonish and theatrical character. Connections to history that discourage fans of the original Playstation 1 versions.
Even the Beneviento section, which has a great deal of terror. But it is psychological terror, running away from what RE has always proposed.
There are those who say that history does not tell in the RE franchise. To those, I recommend that you go and play the originals.

Loved the game! It was very inventive, fun, scary and interesting, the story line is amazing as well. However it would've been great to have a choice whether you want to collaborate with Heisenberg or not. There also could've been more things to interact with.

That’s why I was surprised when I couldn’t even make it past the first area in the game with the things that kind of look like Beast from X-Men. I spent almost an hour trapped in that first house trying to find a way out until I figured out that you can, indeed, kill them. Then it became a process of me frantically looking for where to go next before being slaughtered by a large group of the beast creatures. Rinse and repeat for two hours before I decided to just opt for a refund. No idea what I was doing wrong. I’ve heard others say it’s pretty easy. One of the biggest issues I had was picking up items. Sometimes I would be standing right next to it with the icon highlighted, but it’s like the button just wouldn’t register. The start of the game was also confusing and didn’t feel like RE to me. Controls were clunky, which I guess is to be expected. The enemies also felt more out of something like Devil May Cry or even like the orca from LotR. Main character seemed lame. His reactions just didn’t make sense, especially considering he’s been through this before. I didn’t play 7, so maybe that would help. Also had problems seeing because it was too dark.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. RE Village is one of my most anticipated game of the year and I am always been a big fan of the series. So how does this installment hold up? Sadly, it is an uneven entry which despite its incredible production values failed to evoke that sense of terror that was prevalent in its previous entry. The main problem was that RE became a victim of its success: even its previous remake of 2 and 3 are of such high quality, it made this installment slightly redundant. The highlight: the first half of the game, with its excursion of Castle Dimetrescu and its inhabitants that are so well designed that they became instant meme's. Each subsequent sections sadly could not reach that particular heights until the so called finale, where a more surprising action packed section, provides you with a much needed rush in adrenaline. Nevertheless, RE still provides the usual thrill and chills, and maybe this more streamlined, less 'horror' approach is the one that provides the sales for Capcom. Expand

A decent entry in the series that is lacking in genuine horror for the most part and instead relies on middling gun play as it corrals you around an incredibly small game world from one “boss fight” to the next. This entry like the last suffers from its need to be tied to the broader story of the series which (lets be honest) has become a saltire of itself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Would recommend playing for fans of the series and those interested in horror/action games-this entry in the series tones down the overall horror, when compared to previous games, however, it still delivers in providing a creepy atmosphere with solid survival horror gameplay. The character design and gameplay is also solid-new inventory system and merchant was a great addition!

A single playthrough can last anywhere from 10-15 hours, depending on how much time you invest outside the main story with puzzles and treasures. The world is more open at least compared to previous entries, but it can still feel linear at times in terms of what resources you have access to and how this impacts your movement around the world. The world itself is designed very well-there is great variety to the different areas you explore throughout the story. However, there were a few areas in the game I would have liked to further explore, but was unable to revisit due to my progression in the story.

A few weaknesses of the game would include the relatively short lived boss battles which didn't live up to the hype going into the game-some of which were over the top action oriented. If you are an avid player in the series, I would also recommend playing through on hardcore difficulty.

A highly polished game (minimal bugs, great graphics and animations, etc) that is nevertheless very mediocre. The game is at war with itself by trying to be a jack of all trades, but is a master of none.

It wants to be a survival horror style RE, but there are a million ways to procure health and ammo, be it through any drops, crafting, or simply just buying them from the Duke. Not to mention your inventory case which has enough space to hold every weapon, bullet, and healing item under the sun, made even easier because treasure, key items, herbs and other crafting items don't take up space.

It wants to be RE4 as well, but never throws enough enemies at you at once to really take full advantage of the massive arsenal you amass, and as a result combat becomes rather unengaging before long. A problem that's compounded by the lack of enemy variety or variety in enemy encounters.

There are multiple areas that are on the weaker side, or just a slog to playthrough (especially on repeat playthroughs) such as the opening and it's unskippable 5 minute (at MINIMUM) forced walking section, and the 2nd and 3rd main areas. As a result, you get a game that will, for decent stretches of time, will border on uninteresting or boring.

As far as story goes, it's nothing special. It's nonsensical and the characters range from mildly interesting to completely forgettable. The cast is nowhere near as strong as the Baker's from 7.
Post game, you unlock the Mercenaries. It's decent enough but it's not as fun as the mercenaries from 4, 5, and 6. You also unlock Village of Shadows difficulty, which feels like it's super hard just for the sake of being super hard. Personally, I found no enjoyment in it.

Overall, this is not a bad game. It's just very mediocre.

I'm not giving it a 10 because of mercenaries and more specifically that in order to get the trophy you need to grind, and when you say grind that's not good. It would've been perfect if they made the trophy such that you need to finish every map once if they wanted you to go through everything.
Anyway since most of the players will likely just play the story mode most of the time, that part is excellent. I would've liked a more tense atmosphere to be honest, like the Baker house, but what we got is definitely not bad. Definitely recommend this game and I'm glad I've got it.

It felt like being on a really fancy ride that only went one speed if that makes sense? A lot of style and not so much substance. I wish they would have chosen one or two sections and fleshed them out more - instead, they focused on 4+ sections and the end result just felt a bit all over the place. Plus, it is CAMPY - I know, it’s resident evil, but usually these games serve you camp with a dose of atmosphere. This one was just straight camp and trying too hard to shock the viewer.
On a positive note, the game is gorgeous. One of the best current gen games I’ve played. Also, it is totally playable and it’s not unfun, it just really is an action game through and through, there is zero tension/horror, and I was not really expecting that.

The amount of variation that can be observed, from the castle to the creepy doll house to the factory , makes this game a joy to play for someone who loves detailed level designs/level designs that pack a lot of creativity and variety.

Characters: Character creation is where this game gets a big plus. The characters don't feel cheap and the characters are also very detailed in terms of textures + portraying the emotions.

Gameplay: Gameplay is fun. It's a game that takes around 10-12 hours and is ideal for folks like me who don't have a lot of time to play video games anymore. Gameplay has the usual resident evil mechanics like crafting, ammos etc One thing I loved is the ammo isn't as scarce as resident evil 7 which made this game a tad bit easier than the previous game.

Gameplay goes from RE7 style gameplay to something a action intensive gameplay and Capcom transitioned the gameplay from one style to another with fluidity.

Audio: One has to use headphones to get the best out of this game's audio. This game has amazing 3d audio which really helps to adds an extra layer of immersion in the game. It helps in the boss fights + you can easily track the enemies based on the 3d sound.

Over all, Capcom has perfected of what people expect from a AAA game in RE8. The detailed level design, characters that pack a lot of depth and emotion, great 3d audio, the ability to change the difficulty(yes, this is a big deal now-a-days), save feature so you need not be glued to one specific game, amazing visuals, a good storyline, the final hour of amazing action packed gameplay, hitting 4k 60fps with ray tracing, all combined together makes this game a perfect 10 on 10. RE8 sets an example of what one should expect from a AAA game.

Similarly to Resident Evil 4 back in the day, Village will attract a new generation of players and redefine the franchise for the modern age. I guess it’s time to stop looking back and counting on the series to return to its roots. Capcom is well aware of those roots and willingly draws from them to create something new but still infused with Resident Evil’s spirit. Village is not perfect, but neither was RE4, and once again it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the flaws, because overall it’s an amazing game. [07/2021, p.56]

Resident Evil Village feels like such a culmination. Bringing together elements from the franchise all the way up to now and crafting what looks to be the next step of survival horror, it embraces every aspect of the franchise. While the insidious dread of Resident Evil VII is missing, there are still plenty of scares. The monster designs are fantastic, from the generations undead, the fury of the Lupine beasts, to the towering monstrosities. It's well worth delving into the concept art and 3D models to enjoy them fully. The story is just the right amount of silly with the terrifying, and the odd dash of the surreal. The combat is smooth and fluid, best evidenced in the addictive Mercenaries mode. All of these elements added together make quite possibly the best Resident Evil to date, and a foundation for a fresh new generation of terror.

RE: Village is a mixture of almost all previous Resident Evil elements, making the most of both survival horror and puzzle intensity, but with the primary stage being left for the more action-like nature of Resident Evil 4. It has some great story moments, sprinkled with a few lacklustre characters that are still overshadowed by its most notable characteristic – most detailed environment to date.
