If you’ve been looking for a SWAT simulator for console—and judging by the game’s popularity on the PlayStation Store, a lot of people have—Ready or Not really is as good as they come. It could do with some more polished controls across the board, but VOID Interactive has done a great job bringing the game to a lot more players, even if PC gamers must suffer some very minor consequences.

Ready or Not is an excellent cooperative first-person shooter. The immersion is fantastic, with outstanding realism. There are many moments of tension and team communication. However, there are some issues, such as the single-player bots being quite difficult to control. Furthermore, the game was clearly designed for five players, so many levels become unnecessarily long and difficult with fewer players.

Ready or Not is a first person shooter that hits the mark by offering a realistic and bloody vision of the criminal world. Its varied and numerous missions will keep you glued to the controller in this PS5 and Xbox X Series X|S version that establishes itself as a good port for one of the games that have most refreshed the genre recently.

Ready or Not is a unique cooperative shooter. It’s not casual fun in the way Helldivers 2 can be. That means it certainly won’t be for everyone, and the solo experience doesn’t hold a light to playing with friends for us. However, those elements mixed in with a harrowing and outright disturbing tone make Ready or Not one of the most immersive co-op experiences available on PS5 right now.

Few games can compare to the unsparing and ferocious intensity that permeates through every part of Ready or Not's gameplay or presentation. The more controversial themes and imagery will likely be as stomach churning for some as the often times inconsistent AI and multiplayer experiences. Yet I still found myself returning to duty to bring order to the chaos. Ready or Not is a tough and unforgiving game, but one that's simultaneously rewarding and stressfully evoking.

For those who count Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and SWAT 4 among some of the best tactical shooters around, playing Ready or Not feels like riding a bike. Even with the adjustment of going from PC to console, Ready or Not still shoots to the top of the list of tactical shooters available on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, because there's simply not much else on the market like it.

Ready or Not can be a little formulaic at times, but so is police work. It's the second police game I've reviewed this year, but the first one I can wholeheartedly recommend. If you are here for the multiplayer, the PC players might move too fast for you, but you can just disable crossplay. The controls are intuitive, the AI is generally easy to command apart from some menu clunkiness, and the dystopian grit looks great on a big TV screen. I'm definitely going back to playing the PC version most of the time, but that doesn't stop Ready or Not from being the best tactical shooter available on consoles today.

Ready Or Not is an incredible co-op experiencing, blending tough-as-nails encounters with hilarious co-op shenanigans and dynamic objectives. It isn't nearly as much fun singleplayer, but it's definitely just as tense.

Even though some details have been altered, the core challenge of entering a building full of armed men, surviving gunfire, and rescuing hostages remains just as rewarding as before. Despite some launch issues — such as lost save files and the already mentioned censorship accusations — the game remains one of the most visceral simulation experiences available on consoles, making it a great choice for fans of the genre.

Ready or Not isn’t a Fugees tie-in, it’s a SWAT-em-up in a similar vein to Rainbox Six Vegas. Just with rougher edges and glitches a plenty. It purports to put your squad members mental wellbeing front and centre but it only really relates to whether they’re able to join you on your next mission. It’s alright though and we’ll keep dipping in and out for a while.

Gripping, no-frills action with annoying rough edges - but so spot-on in terms of content that the big shooters should take a leaf out of their book.
