If there was a Bestower of Peak story path, then it would have been about Team Asano’s making of this game. It is the best thing to ever come out from Square Enix since Rebirth’s 2024’s release and the definitive Octopath experience, even if the budget tries to get on the way sometimes.

Regardless of its genre transformation, Octopath Traveler 0 is hands-down one of the best RPGs ever made. Its storytelling, characterizations, soundtrack, and densely interconnected gameplay loop are masterclass, even if it takes more than a little while for everything to click. Honestly, Square’s HD-2D output has been exceptional, and I’m eager to see where these efforts continue to grow.

There’s little doubt that Octopath Traveler 0 is one of the best JRPGs of the year, if not the best entry in the series. Its novel additions alongside the series’ staples elevate it to new heights. Despite having enough content for a hundred or so hours, it respects players’ time more than any other JRPG I have played.

Despite that, the combat system has never been better, and the stories in this game are fantastic, and even through little pixel people they are more believable and poignant than most of the genre has offered in a long, long time. There's just one thing that really annoys me. Almost all of the music is recycled from previous games. It's amazing, and better than pretty much any other music that's come out since the first Octopath Traveler game, but still, we heard it in the first Octopath Traveler game.

There is a lot of content, side missions, and characters to unlock, both during the main storyline and optionally, as well as secondary bosses and items to find or purchase.

Regardless, the story will have players engaged enough to keep them playing for the immensely lengthy storyline. If there’s one long JRPG to get for the holiday season, it’s this.

I don’t play Octopath games for the plot. This is more true than ever before with Octopath Traveler 0. This story spends several long hours being a gigantic bummer. It’s bad enough to mess up the pacing and sap my enthusiasm. On the other hand, the mechanical systems at work are as intricate and rewarding as they’ve ever been. I love tuning up my gigantic party, tweaking their skillsets, and unleashing them on the world at large. If it’s a little too easy at first, that’s okay. The music and the visuals are as excellent as I hoped for, and there’s a whole town to rebuild as well. Like the previous games, there’s a lot to love about Octopath 0. It all comes down to what you’re looking for.
