Moonscars is a standout example of what a 2D souls-like should be. From its beautifully atmospheric world, exceptional animations, to its fluid and gratifying combat, makes Moonscars an absolute pleasure to play. A best in class 2D souls-like.

That Moonscars is like so many other similar releases only serves to make its ability to differentiate itself and stand out that much more remarkable. A well accomplished title that is easily recommended to anyone with even a passing interest in the genre.

Even if we feel that the Moonscars formula is not at its full potential, the Black Mermaid studio delivers here a solid and often quite ingenious action-RPG. Between mixing genres with a touch of rogue-lite; two-speed difficulty; good sensations in combat and beautiful artistic direction, there is really something going on, controller in hand. It is finally two or three inaccuracies, in terms of balancing and finishing, which pull Moonscars down. Regardless, it's always a pleasure to restart a game. A good pickaxe for fans of demanding action games.

Not quite as extensive as blasphemous, but with a much more sophisticated combat system, as well as a much darker and more artistic art style. With the current updates, the map is also much clearer and tidier. Only a few rather unfair passages prevent the 10/10. Full Review »

    Bad-
Soundtrack is disappointing; story is cryptic to a fault

    Thoughts-
The stumbles, however, are minute in the big picture, and hardly matter next to everything the game does well (which, to be clear, it does so well that anyone who has an interest in any of the various things Moonscars is trying owes it to themselves to give it a go). I started this review by noting that 2D pixel art action platform souls like indie games are over abundant – Moonscars doesn’t necessarily fix that problem, but it does truly stand out in an increasingly crowded segment of the market by acquitting itself through sheer mastery of almost everything it sets out to do, delivering a compelling and well playing, one that knows not to outstay its welcome, and one where its few flaws can’t detract from its overall appeal.
