Metal Eden

A first-person shooter with great potential, but which unable to fully express itself.

It's not particularly big or clever, but Metal Eden is a beautiful, bombastic blaster that entertains while it lasts.

Metal Eden's fast-paced gameplay loop and harrowing sci-fi setting serve as a solid backdrop for arena combat, but be prepared for a whole lot of talking.

Metal Eden is a relentless first-person shooter, defined by the versatility of its protagonist, turning every skirmish into a showcase of skill. Though its length is brief and its visuals are not AAA-level, it manages to shine thanks to its gameplay and an engaging story.

Metal Eden’s hyperkinetic and challenging gameplay that tested age-old strategies was appreciated, even if it’s science fiction city and story was too safe and generic to be memorable. It is not Metroid however much it might want to look like it on the shiny spherical surface.

Metal Eden aims to carve out its place in the FPS genre with a highly vertical design that takes players to a unique cyberpunk world. It has enough elements to stand out from the competition, offering fast-paced, straightforward, and enjoyable gameplay. However, performance issues and underwhelming visuals keep it from truly taking off. Still, it delivers a distinct experience for fans of the genre.

When Metal Eden hits it hits hard. Arena fights are extremely fast paced and always require you to be on your toes. Thanks to a lot of tools of destruction it gives you ways to come out on the winning side of seemingly impossible combat situations. Unfortunately almost everything else just drags it down. A very odd game world, heavy framerate issues on PlayStation 5 as well as the use of AI for some voice over leave a very stale taste in your mouth afterwards.

Metal Eden, from Reikon Games, is an ambitious FPS that stands out for its engaging combat and interesting mechanics, like the cores. However, it falters due to a superficial narrative and repetitive art direction. It’s ideal for players seeking quick fun, but may disappoint those looking for depth.

Metal Eden is a game that started off very strong but quickly wore me out. The repetition becomes excessive within the stages, with you going through practically the same encounter 15 to 25 times per level and having little to do between fights, which turns what seemed like a promising game at first into a rather tiresome experience.

It acts fast but substitutes speed for intelligence and as much as it would like to be the new Titanfall, it doesn’t quite have the moves.

Altogether, Metal Eden should be given a try, there's a demo on the PlayStation Store that can help you decide whether you dig its energy. However, despite its frenetic pace and solid gunplay, there's a sense the true potential of Metal Eden is unfinished. If you want a good and brief FPS, you can do far worse than Metal Eden, but you'll be left with the lingering impression you've seen all it has to offer too quick, and that the game's potential has only come out of the FPS oven half-baked.

Excellent shooting, fluid parkour, and plenty of variety electrify this brief sci-fi adventure. The visuals are superb, but it’s undermined by rocky performance and awkward dialogue throughout.
