This game was quick, fun, and just all around okay. It has pretty mindless gameplay, but cool areas to explore that are full of cool references. I personally would have trouble paying the full price, but I would recommend this game if it is on sale.

It's a cool and fun game, the villain and the commentator are fun, with lots of jokes about man's relationship with nature.
The gameplay is also good, nothing special, but sometimes in the fight the camera can be annoying.
With good graphics and an easy platinum, somewhere around 10 hours, Maneater is cool at the beginning and a little cloying in the middle.

The game is decent for an RPG lacking in content. However, when my shark reached maximum level, I had serious trouble with framerate and the game would even crash about once per hour. Also, an end boss that seems impossible to beat.

Launched with glitched trophies which have since been patched. I kept losing too much lighting at night and had to play the majority of the game with highlights and outlines. The controls are not very tight and the aim is off. The shark surfaces too often and you have to fight the controls to make it go back underwater while things are attacking you and you have no idea where they are anymore. Once the shark size gets too large it becomes difficult to target things right in front of you on land. The writing was okay and experience was short as it should be. I didn't upgrade my items until the end because I underestimated how little you'll actually receive and how different exp types don't overlap. That was probably the one thing that was well done but yet it was never explained anywhere so it was completed unused. I wish I had a faster swim for the shark. Human combat didn't make sense. They can pinpoint shoot you with guns while you're swimming 40 feet under the water. They can also shoot you through walls, boats, etc. The boat itself doesn't block bullets. There's times where you are fighting on the border between 2 different zones. However, every time you go over the zone border (which can happen a lot later) the game loads up a loading screen and loads in assets for the other zone. I had the game load the zones 4-5 times during one combat encounter. Worth noting that this was on the PS5, I'd hate to see what it was like on a PS4. Fun concept, ShaRkPG is exciting, and would have been a much better game with another tuning pass and tighter controls. Expand

Not every game has to be a 25 hour+ AAA open world shooter with light puzzle elements. Sometimes I want to try something different. Driving a shark through a capitalist dystopia is definitely something different.

In many ways, the central premise of the game squanders its potential. Your shark is a man eater. The goal of the game is to eat your way through the ranks of shark hunters
Not every game has to be a 25 hour+ AAA open world shooter with light puzzle elements. Sometimes I want to try something different. Driving a shark through a capitalist dystopia is definitely something different.

In many ways, the central premise of the game squanders its potential. Your shark is a man eater. The goal of the game is to eat your way through the ranks of shark hunters until you kill the man who killed your mother. This is revenge tale. Yet the best parts of the game are exploring the waterways that have been spoiled by a mankind that is loathe to accept responsibility over the environment. The could have had BioShock levels of story telling. Instead it squanders most of its assets for cheap thrills.

I enjoyed the process of growing the shark. If you have ever played Feeding Frenzy, you know how this work. Eat, grow, rinse and repeat. Unfortunately, the shark can only grow so large, so give up on your dreams of a Megalodon biting ships in half. The underwater and land based exploration was also interesting. I am not going scuba diving anytime soon. A virtual exploration of the ocean is the kind of escapism I need from a video game. The environment that have been spoiled by man are a little too realistically dirty. A better game would show the shark growing and escaping from the confines of mankind to the freedom and splendor of the wild ocean. Instead of that, the game doubles down on the silly premise that you are watching an exploitative cable show about shark hunters. Bill Parnell provides excellent narration that is sometimes funny as it skewers of mankind.

The combat in the game is a mixed bag. The controls are simple enough. Fights are won in the water by circling around a predator's jays to bit at its flanks. Your shark can heal mid-fight by eating prey. The combat starts to fall apart when fighting shark hunters. Like some kind of underwater Spider-man, your shark will see enemies aiming at it. You might think you can shake them off by dodging. Nope. You have to doge at the last possible moment. This is where the location of the doge button is a problem. You fight by eating and you cannot eat and doge at the same time unless you awkwardly hold your first and middle finger on bite and dodge. In crowded fights, so many shark hunters are shooting at your shark that dodging becomes impossible. You have no choice but to absorb damage while you eat through them. There are no strategic options of toppling boats or drawing other predators toward hunters. Each boat is a single object and destroying a boat means going through the various models for each level of destruction that the developer has made for the boat. Your shark can unlock some interesting upgrades but as with most games that lack vision, by the end of the game, you will have very little opportunity to use those upgrades.

All in all, this game is on the good side of mediocre. Unlike a AAA disaster, Maneater was designed as a lighter experience. Or put another way, this game was always mean to be cheap. Like most all PS5 owners, I picked up this game for "free" with PlayStation Plus. Services like PS+ and Xbox Game Pass demand these kinds of games to pad out their libraries. You will see more games like Maneater. Is this bad? Maybe not. My playthrough of the story was about 9 hours mostly. I can think of many bloated AAA games with 50+ hour playthroughs that have 9 hour stretches that were less interesting than Maneater. I do think Maneater should have been better, and that starts with developers having a higher expectation of the gaming audience.

Playstation Plus game of January 2021. Worth giving it a try as it is dumb fun with meh mechanics. The camera is often struggling to stay put, as your shark constantly switches between locked on prey. For the $50 price tag, its hard to recommend this game exists on mobile devices for free, offering a similar experience. Hungry Shark World/Evolution.

This is a cool open world game. The story isnt mindblowing at all but the fighting system is really cool. Skins are not there just for the looks but also for special abilities, which i find interesting. Theres a lot of enemies and stuff to explore, though in the end youre doing the same all the time. Still worth a play.

I wasn’t expecting Maneater a “game of the year” or a deep, meaningful game. It’s like a delicious desert after your main course: it doesn’t contain nutrition but it tastes great. It’s a little like GTA “lite” but with sea life. You can stick to your main “quest” or you can go off on a rampage, attacking anything that breathes. Wreaking havoc around the beaches is a blast.

It took 30 minutes for me to really get the hang of the controls but the game starts with a good tutorial. Considering that you swim in a 360 degree world, the controls work real well once you get the hang of it.

To be honest I’ve always wanted a game like this and boy did it hit the spot. If you’ve watched some video about it on YouTube then it’s basically exactly what it appears to be. It was a bit deeper than I was expecting, it has some mild RPG elements regarding it’s “level up” scheme. You can “evolve” your shark, grinding to build it up to become a super scary mutant shark.

Just to spend time. The gameplay is based on a system to catch things in the map and bite people and fishes. Ok, we can't expect more than that. I think when you reach the Mega status, you become a invincible shark and this ruins the experience. Good graphics and physics.

Maneater is quite simply a game where you get to be the shark and prey on sea life, humans, or whatever you come by. A fun game to play overall. For trophy hunters - yes, it is a separate trophy stack.

Gory and violent, the game does not disappoint for fans of Jaws, Megalodon, or anyone who ever imagined how cool it would be to be a shark. Definitely worth checking out.

Maneater has a simple idea of a story, but it's enough to keep the game moving from start to finish. Playing as a shark, you have no conversational interaction with anyone/anything - everything is conveyed by reports "about you".

While reality is in short supply, in the game, fun is definitely there in large amounts. All enemies have a static level of power, that doesn't adjust to the player's level/abilities. Therefore, the difficulty, of the game, is a bit askew - as it seems to balance around a player who doesn't do a single side quest. If you do - then you'll find yourself really overpowered as the game goes on. So, the main challenge is definitely early in the game. Late game, everything can feel rather easy.

The controls are pretty easy to learn, but there are some combinations, that you can put together, that can give you the edge in combat, or can allow you to reach secret places. While it's easy to find most of the collectables, ingame, some will have you scratching your head - which adds a nice puzzle aspect to the game!

Visually, the game is great. Strong, almost cartoony, colours and the graphics are really nicely put together. The game can suffer from a few frame rate drops, at times, but these are, relatively, few on the PS5.

The game's pacing is pretty good. You can complete this game, with a full platinum, within 10-12 hours of play and no trophy can be considered as "difficult". It doesn't have a lot of replayability, as it's not like you can go back and do things differently, and there's not much to entertain you after finishing everything.

Overall, Maneater was a really fun experience - even better that it was free on PS Plus!

If you spend some ours you learn it. The atmosphere under water is fantastic with raytracing.
Just “for me” the fighting is a little too loud and I don’t like the sounds of it. But besides this sound and atmosphere is amazing.

As it is, Maneater is still a fairly fun game if roleplaying as an aquatic killing machine is your thing, FPS dips and all… I just wish that my brain would stop playing that damn Nelly Furtado song of the same name over and over every time I settle in for a quick sharky session, especially as the OTHER “Maneater” song by Hall & Oates is a much better fit contextually.

The new features are welcome, and the game definitely looks nicer, but apart from that, it’s the same experience. If you had your fill of the title on the PS4, there’s not a whole lot to come back for. However, if you’re just diving into the game now, this is the version you want.
