For fans of the originals, this is a chance to revisit a beloved classic in HD. For newcomers, it’s an opportunity to explore a piece of gaming history that continues to inspire and captivate. If you’re prepared to brave the depths of Nosgoth and confront its haunting mysteries, while curbing your expectations somewhat, the Soul Reaver remasters are an experience you won’t regret.

As a modern-day gamer, Soul Reaver Remastered might not be significant for you. But for an old-school 40-year-old gamer, it brings back memories of a golden era of gaming and legendary titles. While the remaster sparks nostalgia, it falls short of addressing the gameplay mechanics—especially in the sequel—leaving the experience somewhat dated. For those who cherished the original, the remaster is a bittersweet reminder of a time when storytelling and atmosphere were king, even if it struggles to fully modernize itself for a new generation.

I always worry if time is going to be kind to old games. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered have delivered a faithful recreation. The upgraded visuals help bring a more cohesive look across both games and I simply adore the way the story is told. At it's heart, it's a fairly forgiving platformer with a lenient approach to death. Despite that, things like the save system in Soul Reaver show an industry still trying to figure things out. Set against modernity, it feels more like a historical artifact but I can't deny that it still manages to work.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered resurrects two of the most-celebrated games from the long-dormant vampire franchise. For immortals and the undead, a quarter-century isn't really that long, so it shouldn't be too surprising both games hold up well and are still enjoyable today, even if they do show their true age even with the upgrades. The improved visuals maintain the signature appearance of the original, but look much better on HD displays. In general, this collection found the correct balance between keeping the classics intact while adding just the right amount of new blood to help these games appeal to a modern audience. Hopefully this can lead to a greater resurrection of the Legacy of Kain franchise.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered introduces two cult classics to contemporary audiences, but some outdated game design elements might prevent it from finding a home with anyone besides die-hard series fans.

What's most important here is that Nosgoth remains as interesting as ever, and this new collection is currently the best way to play both Soul Reaver games, be it for the first time and as a part of nostalgic comeback.

A solid remaster mostly focused on improving the first Soul Reaver. It leaves the weaker sequel further behind, resulting in an uneven package.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered holds the franchise and its potential future on its back. Its exceptional writing, story, and sound design continue to remain some of the best on there. It's just a shame that more love wasn't put into the quality of life changes it so dearly needs as Aspyr's other remasters.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is a welcome reminder of just how engaging Raziel's tale of vengeance can be. Tonally, the two games are dripping with atmosphere and intrigue, decorated with some fantastic storytelling and memorable characters. Poorly aged gameplay is the only real drawback, although it can be surprisingly easy to overlook when the world of Nosgoth still feels so richly crafted.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 + 2 Remastered offers an intriguing story and nostalgic exploration, but outdated mechanics and repetitive combat hinder the experience. It's an interesting trip down memory lane and is great at times, but also leads to significant frustration occasionally.

Soul Reaver and its sequel benefit from modern controls and minor visual upgrades yet there are niggling issues these remasters fail to address. Sparsely placed checkpoints and the lack of a quick save feature do little to help accommodate the sensibilities of modern gamers and will no doubt lead to prospective new fans and nostalgia seekers to bounce off pretty hard, especially if they encounter the same crashes we ran into.
