Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1-2 Remastered is both a time capsule and welcome update to a pair of beloved games that have been shelved for far too long. The longer times goes on, the harder it becomes to preserve titles. Aspyr not only presents the Soul Reaver games relatively untouched but provides worthy updates to ensure the legacy is continued and appreciated. Hopefully, this is the first step towards Legacy of Kain rising from its deep slumber and back into the light.

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered is the new gold standard that all modern remasters should strive to achieve. Developer Aspyr has taken Crystal Dynamic’s classic tale about a betrayed vampire seeking revenge and delivered an impeccable visual overhaul while maintaining the brooding gothic majesty that won Soul Reaver a legion of fans back at the turn of the millennium.

It is a collection that should be tried by both fans of the originals and those who want to start getting to know the franchise; It could be the perfect start. And, although Blood Omen was really the first chapter, it does need a major update, to the point that a remake should be made.

The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered brings back two cult classics with great care and attention to detail – sporting enhanced visuals, modern controls and improvements that only improve the pacing of the games. Everything great about these games is still great today. But while some aspects of both games still persist, these remasters are fitting tributes, offering a captivating revisit to Nosgoth that fans have been pining for for years.

Despite these challenges, the core experience remains strong, and the remaster successfully preserves the essence of the originals. However, addressing these issues would have elevated the collection from a solid nostalgia trip to a truly definitive edition.

The significance of the two Soul Reaver titles in this remaster cannot be overstated. However, they were games that showed their age. Thankfully, this remaster enhances the visuals and audio, making them more accessible to a newer audience while also they provide an opportunity for longtime fans to revisit these classic titles.

Taken at core value, the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered collection is exactly what fans of the original have been clamouring for. Visual improvements, some minor quality of life tweaks and bonus content make it a welcome return. However, those expecting more might be feeling left sucked dry, only to hope this draws up interest for a franchise resurrection.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered manages to bring back two of the most important and most beloved games in the history of gaming, reviving the idea that the franchise, perhaps, can continue. Despite the fact that the gameplay is notorious for the passage of time, and that they present some minor technical flaws, this package more than fulfills its purpose of bringing these titles to the hands of new players, and at the same time leaves old fans happy.

The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered is a lovely collection of two classic titles that allows them to shine. There's still roughness that comes from age, but the areas of the game that shined the most, including its atmosphere, script and voice acting, remain as excellent as ever. Most of the adjustments to the two games make the rougher parts more palatable to modern gamers. You still need to have some patience for the PS1-era of action/adventure games, but if you do, it's well worth it to see one of the greatest cult classics in video game history.

Lots of bonus content, and seeing Raziel was very exciting all over again, but sadly I found the frustrating parts of both games still just as frustrating.

As seen in other similar releases, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is a great way to feed nostalgia or get to know the franchise for the first time. However, the game makes it clear that it doesn't intend to go much further than a port with smoother visuals and extra behind-the-scenes content.

This remaster effectively updates graphics and mechanics, with improved character designs, added accessibility features like a map and compass, and intriguing extra content for fans, though, as expected, it retains the original's flaws and simplicity, which might not make it appealing for new players.

With lots to love for new fans, and a tonne of respect shown to existing diehards, Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is the first strong step towards what will hopefully be a full franchise revival in the future.

For fans of the originals, this is a chance to revisit a beloved classic in HD. For newcomers, it’s an opportunity to explore a piece of gaming history that continues to inspire and captivate. If you’re prepared to brave the depths of Nosgoth and confront its haunting mysteries, while curbing your expectations somewhat, the Soul Reaver remasters are an experience you won’t regret.

As a modern-day gamer, Soul Reaver Remastered might not be significant for you. But for an old-school 40-year-old gamer, it brings back memories of a golden era of gaming and legendary titles. While the remaster sparks nostalgia, it falls short of addressing the gameplay mechanics—especially in the sequel—leaving the experience somewhat dated. For those who cherished the original, the remaster is a bittersweet reminder of a time when storytelling and atmosphere were king, even if it struggles to fully modernize itself for a new generation.

I always worry if time is going to be kind to old games. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered have delivered a faithful recreation. The upgraded visuals help bring a more cohesive look across both games and I simply adore the way the story is told. At it's heart, it's a fairly forgiving platformer with a lenient approach to death. Despite that, things like the save system in Soul Reaver show an industry still trying to figure things out. Set against modernity, it feels more like a historical artifact but I can't deny that it still manages to work.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered resurrects two of the most-celebrated games from the long-dormant vampire franchise. For immortals and the undead, a quarter-century isn't really that long, so it shouldn't be too surprising both games hold up well and are still enjoyable today, even if they do show their true age even with the upgrades. The improved visuals maintain the signature appearance of the original, but look much better on HD displays. In general, this collection found the correct balance between keeping the classics intact while adding just the right amount of new blood to help these games appeal to a modern audience. Hopefully this can lead to a greater resurrection of the Legacy of Kain franchise.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered introduces two cult classics to contemporary audiences, but some outdated game design elements might prevent it from finding a home with anyone besides die-hard series fans.

What's most important here is that Nosgoth remains as interesting as ever, and this new collection is currently the best way to play both Soul Reaver games, be it for the first time and as a part of nostalgic comeback.

A solid remaster mostly focused on improving the first Soul Reaver. It leaves the weaker sequel further behind, resulting in an uneven package.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered holds the franchise and its potential future on its back. Its exceptional writing, story, and sound design continue to remain some of the best on there. It's just a shame that more love wasn't put into the quality of life changes it so dearly needs as Aspyr's other remasters.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered is a welcome reminder of just how engaging Raziel's tale of vengeance can be. Tonally, the two games are dripping with atmosphere and intrigue, decorated with some fantastic storytelling and memorable characters. Poorly aged gameplay is the only real drawback, although it can be surprisingly easy to overlook when the world of Nosgoth still feels so richly crafted.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 + 2 Remastered offers an intriguing story and nostalgic exploration, but outdated mechanics and repetitive combat hinder the experience. It's an interesting trip down memory lane and is great at times, but also leads to significant frustration occasionally.

Soul Reaver and its sequel benefit from modern controls and minor visual upgrades yet there are niggling issues these remasters fail to address. Sparsely placed checkpoints and the lack of a quick save feature do little to help accommodate the sensibilities of modern gamers and will no doubt lead to prospective new fans and nostalgia seekers to bounce off pretty hard, especially if they encounter the same crashes we ran into.
