The game is simply a joy to play, from its breathtaking landscapes, to the missions and side quests that just get your brain’s happy juices flowing.

I was anticipating this game from the moment it was announced, and it was well worth the price take. Highly recommend to anyone who likes metroidvanias, or just large exploration based games in general.

Add to this the same repetitive gameplay, the boring obtuse puzzles, and the enemy difficulty that is all over the place and it doesn't make for a very fun game. This game might have had a review score of 7 or 8 from me had it came out a decade or two ago but right now I don't see how anyone could play this and think anything other than this is a "blah" game. Generic as can be. Nothing inherently bad, just nothing to keep you wanting to go on other than maybe "to get your money's worth" since you can't sell this digital-only game.

Checkpoints can be frustrating, the dodge and parry I never got used to and I think I might have maxed out my expletives this year with Kena and Dread. For a new developer (of video games, they've worked in commercials and other forms of media) I am blown away and wish I played this much sooner than I did.

Youll explore these little open areas, findig these cute charcters called Rots, you collect these rots which helps you level up and unlock new skills and you use these rots to purify the land and get to one of the 3 items you need to summon th spirit.. to do this youll go into these areas that are corrupted, there will be enemies there for you take take down, after a while you can sick your rots onto a corrupted heart and you then explode it and the land clears up and you can move on.. rinse and repeat.. howver not a repetitive rinse and repeat.. what kena does so great on is its pacing.. combat is few and far between, and im so glad it is because of how dull and boring combat is here… youre kinda just mashing buttons.. the joy comes from exploring, finding these rots, finding hats for them, and solving the puzzles… these puzzles aren’t necessarily hard.. theyre all environmental and just come down to you spotting the solution, and as you progress the game youll gain new items such as a bow that can zip you through the air, and a bomb that can fling debris up into the air.. constantly changing the puzzle solving up… but again simple puzzles.. this is a game you sit back and enjoy.. no thinking no stress.. just doing.. and I loved that.. and onto the beauty of this game.. The charcters, the level design, the set pieces.. this game is gorgeous.. my only real negative aside from the awful combat, iss the pretty lackluster story.. don’t get me wrong I absolutely loved the first half of this game, I even cried becsue the emotions and storying telling was so good.. but after that, the storytelling falls flat and is kinda just there…
That being said Kena is a really special game and is a must play.

What a pleasure it was playing this game for the first time. I had seen the trailers and I was so excited. I actually pre-ordered the game (which is something I no longer do after the Last of Us 2) and I couldn't have been happier. The game is beautiful. It really is like playing an animated movie. The sound, visuals, gameplay, presentation, story, everything absolutely gets a 10/10.

The combat was totally different than I was expecting, much harder and tactical. But it works and it works well. I don't usually go for harder games, and there are difficulty modes where it's more in line with what you'd expect so don't worry kids can happily play it too. But I enjoyed playing it on the harder mode as it was a great challenge. All in all this is one of the greatest games I've ever played. Hand on heart, I absolutely loved every minute in this world.

Wonderful game. Nice music. Nice story. Nice, simple combat (no DS here, which is a nice break sometimes as everyone these days seems to want to copy FromSoftware).

Only one reason I game a 8/10... the animations and voiceovers just aren't there. Small studio, I believe, which is fine. But something about the animation feels unpolished - almost like Kena isn't "attached" to the world.

But something about the animation feels unpolished - almost like Kena isn't "attached" to the world. The facial gestures are also really limited which probably means there was no mocap. And finally... voiceovers at times sound (in English at least) as though they hired the first people they could find off of Tik Tok or something.

But definitely give this one a try if you own a PS4/PS5. Wonderful fun, and the closest thing to a Zelda game you'll play in a while.

EDIT (after 100%): Buy it on sale. What I thought was just the beginning 1/3rd of the game ended up actually being the whole game. Because all the narrative parts didn't quite connect with one another, the various parts of the game felt more like side-quests than different chapters of the same story. I'm not quite sure why the studio didn't hire better writers if they knew that other parts of the game would naturally suffer under the limitation of a smaller studio.

I think that the first and main thing that attracts in the game is the plot and the main character, on the one hand, and on the other hand the visual style, which just exactly corresponds to the fabulousness of the world. But with all the fabulousness, the game is not at all childish, at times it reaches the true drama. As for the gameplay, this is the most primitive part of the game, which is simply given not to interfere and give the minimum possible to exist in the created world. Considering that the game was made by animators, the emphasis is of course on visual and setting. Although, from the second half, the gameplay is also revealed, archery is added, a variety of skills in the action game. Separately, I would like to note the support of dualsense. Archery on dualsense is simply amazing, you just physically feel and hear how the bowstring is pulled, thanks to the support of adaptive triggers. Great job. I am sure that Kena is a pen test for developers. With all the advantages, I see more great potential in this game than a perfect performance. The plot is still not fully disclosed and has a more episodic character, the main character is interesting, but also not fully disclosed, the gameplay is primitive, the riddles are mostly simple. I am definitely waiting for the second part, where the game will be fully revealed, and then it will be 10 out of 10 Expand

in conclusion this game is a fantastic experience and if i could compare this to other games i would say a dynamic looking zelda with a lot of cool puzzles i strongly recommend this game and my final score to kena bridge of spirits is an easy 8.5 out of 10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful game, nice music/sounds. What i didn't like were the game mechanics and controls. I didn't like any boss battle, but it became less irritating after getting the dash possibility. The levels became also repetitive for me, so i set the game on "story mode", the game became ok for me. The story was also lacking, missed the Kena who, why, when and how explanation.

I played the end boss, but i couldn't finish the game, because every time the beast threw me into the lava zone, i died. One mistake, and you die. I played until i died multiple times in phase 2 with "story mode". I know that i must use the block and dash to avoid, but if you forget/not fast enough/don't have a block, you have to start over the entire end boss battle.

There were moments i enjoyed the game, but i don't know if i would buy a Kena 2.

I will get down to the specifics below, but if you need a TL;DR - "Beautiful game, amazing music, gorgeous visuals, enjoyable Gameplay. Would definitely Recommend."

    Now for the specifics.

Graphics: The Game is not striving for photorealism, nor should it. If you've seen Pixar movies, you know what the art-style is like. It looks gorgeous. PS5 offers 2 modes - Quality mode(4K@30fps) and Performance mode(1440p@60fps). Both look great, and this is one of those games on which even 30fps doesn't look too bad when compared to 60fps(kind of like Uncharted 4).
The environments look breathtaking, plus the HDR implementation is amazing.

Music: This is one of the strongest and most memorable aspects of the game. The music when roaming around in the open world environments is soothing and area-specific. Combat music is punchy and punk-rock-esque. Definitely something that will stay with you after you finish the game.

Story: You play as Kena, a spirit guide, who has taken up the mantle after her father. Her job is to help wandering spirits to move on. However, there is a mysterious corruption infesting the Spirit realm, and she must help destroy it and help all the spirits she can along the way. The Story is nothing too intense, but serves it's purpose really well. It's akin to a good Disney movie. There are no companion characters per se, and those that are, don't stick around for the whole game. But what little presence the NPCs have, it is always charming and memorable.

Gameplay: The game is kind of a semi-open-world. The closest comparison that I can think of is God of War, though this is less grand and less expansive. Combat is not too complicated and can be grasped pretty quickly, but is not super easy. Not specially hard, but the cartoony art-style can lull you into a false sense of security and then BAM you've died to the first Corrupted Boss 8 times in a row(happened to a friend, not me. I'm a pro-gamer, huh.)
Anyway, there are a few "ROT" special abilities, that you unlock in the skill tree. You have a Bow, with special attacks for it, and a Staff which you use to do Melee damage. There are a few late game basic unlocks as well that I won't spoil here.
Overall, I quite enjoyed my time with Kena. The Boss Fights are varied and reasonably challenging, the base enemies are varied as well. Combat is not too complicated, but very satisfying.
There are also quite a few puzzle solving sections, which are not too hard in my opinion.

Overall - The game, for me, is really one of the best gaming experiences I have had in quite a while. With a decent story, good gameplay, gorgeous visuals and incredible musical score, I would recommend this AA title to anyone.

This game is truly beautiful. The animations are perfect.
But it lacks something in the combat system. It is still good, but in the higher difficulty setting it feels a little bit off. And it's really short and we don't know much about the story, that's why I cannot put 10/10.

There is so much to love in this game, the graphics are top tear, the music is lovely, a good story, great bossfights. Only thing i did not like was the parry system which felt off and unfair. Master mode is one of the hardest challenges i have faced but was really rewarding when getting the platinum.

I really enjoyed my time with Kena and found it a very solid experience overall, because it doesn't have the problems many games have today. Bridge of Spirits has a focused design with almost no HUD, no quest markers, no long dialogues and no lame side quests. It actually feels like a game.

Next to that the art-style and music together make it a very soothing and pleasant experience.

Next to that the art-style and music together make it a very soothing and pleasant experience. This 'feel' reminded me of Journey. The story can be very touching in moments although Kena herself as a character is extremely simple. She doesn't have much to say.

As for the gameplay I am a bit conflicted. It can be engaging at times and is never boring, but it isn't amazing either. You have a light and heavy attack, but you cannot combine the two. There is a standard combo with the light attack and if you use the heavy attack you stand completely still and this makes Kena feel quite heavy in combat. You would like her to be more agile, but she can feel quite tank-ey and clunky at times. If you compare it to God of War's combat it is definitely lacking.

Lastly, the gameloop is repetitive which makes me put the game down after an hour or so. You are always clearing an area of - lets say - the darkness. You explore some fairly linear area, do some simple puzzles and platforming and in the end do some large fight and thereby clear the area of the darkness. You often find a new quest and basically they tell you to clear these 3 areas and I'm immediately thinking: "oh gosh this is gonna take me an hour or two. It's not gonna be super boring, but I definitely know that there is not something special or unexpected coming up."

All in all I think it can be an incredible experience for a casual gamer, but for an experienced veteran player that likes to juggle with multiple mechanics Kena can feel too simplistic.

After all I enjoyed my journey through Kena. I noticed some intense difficulty spikes at the major boss encounters that felt a bit awkward. Not that I like the comparison but I felt remembered of some souls-like titles. Which is strange because the regular mob encounteres are rather easy. I like the skill and character progression a lot. If you like collectibles this game will get you going for a while with different tiers of collectibles.

The game is not flawless and straight story progression might be a bit short for some if you ruhs it. The intense backtracking for collectibles and the missing "teleport from everywhere" feature leads to my final 9/10 stars. There are very few fps dips in graphically intense areas or movies, especially the final boss encounters but in 95% of times the game runs flawless. I encountered no bugs, no bluescreen, no freezes on my 17hrs completionist playthrough (used guides and one exploit for master difficulty). The game borrows known mechanics from many different games and weaves it into a wholesome new experience.

Ember Lab busts the symbolic magical door of video games DOWN with a familiar set of formulas, but mechanics that make it clear this game has depth, and my god, this has to be one of maybe three of the most incredible looking video games of all time, and that extends to every singular aspect of how this game represents it's carefully, painstakingly carved and lush detailed world, and what you're there to do in it. It might be simple, but wow, Kena is for sure my game of the year. I made a joke in my head that a Nintendo Game from the future fell off a time truck and landed on the Playstation 5 in 2021, which is to say, this game not only looks incredible, but moves even better. PC or PS5 this game actually impresses me magnitudes more than ratchet and clank did- this may be down to subjective design, and yea, R+C looks stupid pixar good, but this from a small studio, with so little advertising, with only quiet hype not knowing what to expect- on top of being possibly the most animated-film looking game I've EVER seen for SURE, the game is just, chill and fun, and challenging, and no, it doesn't break new ground but it does do what it comes to do, and it does it very well. Combat, you have a parry, it's a bubble shield like master chief, it looks really cool when you nail it, it's not easy, the enemies are tree people and the light heavy decisions and cancelling using the bubble shield , along with all the Rot, bow, and of course photo mode, this modest sized game balloons cartoonsihly in every sense into a -so far- 40 hour jump into what an alternate reality Zelda might be if it were set in Bitey of Brackenwood by Adam Phillips. Down to the refraction in water droplets. This game really is a must see, and I suspect while you inspect what definitively is a next generation game defining video game- and put your brain into chill-as-if-you-were-going-to-pixar-movie, you'll absolutely love this game, and spend hours just staring at the grass, in an open-linear experience that is more about being in the very vibrant world kena is painted in, because it is so special and run-aroundable- and, because the game is also very, very good. Kena to me doesn't feel like it evolves gameplay, but visually absolutely, but on the gameplay side, every single aspect is at least taken from the best, and incorporated into systems and mechanics for each aspect of what this game wants you to do- from combat to jumping to rolling to parrying, that if you're anything like me, that difficulty option is a welcome excuse for second run. Here's hoping Kena 2 happens, and that other studios take very serious note of what is on display in this very very unique, weird, out of nowhere totally awesome adventure game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is beautiful, animations are nice and story is just ok. The reason why I'm giving it a 7 is because there's quite a few issues with the gameplay / combat, major one being the lock on system which is pretty unusable!

The final boss is actually terrible, you spend the whole game building up your character and the game takes that all away from you for a multi stage boss fight!

Not sure what this current obsession of developers is with adding LGBT storylines in every other game, at least inform people when selling who aren't into this kinda stuff..

Ember Lab is a new indie video game studio which is best known from their 2018 fan-made Majora’s Mask short film. The short film got such huge positive feedback that the studio decided to start make games and so Kena: Bridge Of Spirits was born.

    STORY, GAMEPLAY, CONTROLS AND GRAPHICS
Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a story-driven adventure game, set in a charming world rich with exploration and fast-paced combat. The story tells about a young Spirit Guide Kena, who goes on a guest to safe the forest and its habitant from corruption that has spread all over.

The gameplay is rather easy to follow but the combats are sometimes kinda hard, especially towards the end the new enemy types makes killing them rather difficult. Kena uses her staff to do close combat and bow to attack from afar. She also controls tiny Rot characters which can help her in the battle by binding the enemy for short period of time. The gameplay is to defeat the enemies in certain areas and destroy the evil nests that spawns the enemies. Usually at the end of every segment there is a boss battle waiting, which I found to be rather easy to win.

The controls are easy and nice to maneuver, there is no lock mechanics in the controls so shooting arrows might be the only aspect of the controls that takes time to master.

Graphically Kena: Bridge Of Spirits looks amazing and animation-like. The game has two graphical fidelity mode, which the other has 30fps and other 60fps. Also photo mode is included and I took very nice shots with it.

    THE FINAL VERDICT
In the end I did enjoy playing Kena: Bridge Of Spirits tremendously. Even though the game combat was hard at times, it did offer three difficulty modes in the beginning. Unfortunately I didn’t beat the final boss because of how hard it was. The game is about 9 to 12 hours long and it took me about 10 hours to finish this on normal difficulty. I did had to use online and search for solutions to some puzzles, but mostly it was just something small I did overlook. I do highly recommend this game.

I didn‘t have high expectations. But Kena is worth every minute. It’s beautiful, it has a great gameplay loop with exploring, fighting, climbing, jumping, Puzzle and Story. It doesn‘t reinvent the Wheel, but all Game Features are solid, smooth and so much fun to Play! I had a Great Time with Kena! Great Work Ember Lab! Give us More!!

Por mais jogos como esse! O cinema já está cheio de filmes com esse estilo "infatil". Bem vinda Ember Lab! Um jogo maravilhoso, comovente, além de ter presenciado poucos bugs no PS5. Parabéns

From the graphics to the music, the game is an absolute masterpiece in indie development. Great experience, story handed my heart, I enjoyed Kena very much.

While the gameplay isn't anything innovative, I am thoroughly enjoying my time in this world of Kena's. I'm playing on Pc and while it is simply gorgeous, I am experiencing frame drops during the intense action. Other than that, I can't complain one bit.

Considering this is the team's first effort, what a stunner. The game is also deceivingly challenging for what at first glance looks like could be a Disney Pixar game aimed at your younger sibling, niece/nephew, child etc. If played on the harder modes (expert, and then later master upon finishing the game) this thing is a worthwhile endeavour. Enemies, and especially bosses all have move sets to learn to defend from, parry timing to master, and weaknesses to find and exploit. Sound familiar? Indeed some have compared the game to Soulsborne games, and I can see where it comes from, even though the game itself is broadly nothing like those games, the concept of mastering the bosses, failing and re-trying is very much in that vein, even if this is where similarities end.

Visually speaking the game is lovely on PS5, even if the textures have been turned down versus its PC counter part which has options for higher quality, but in motion and practise it's not something you care about for more than a moment. The animations are cute for the most part, and generally impressive especially the aforementioned bosses, which are fairly plentiful and varied, with some particularly cool ones scattered through the whole game, not just at the end etc. The music and sound are excellent. As always best heard on a surround sound set up or 3D headphones.

The skill tree is fairly basic compared to other bigger games of this vein but it's also one of the game's strengths, as this one is pared back to one of those older classic games you may have played on a PS2 or earlier, and lasts 10-12 hours in terms of main story. There's also no side questing to be done here, though you have various challenges and collectibles to pursue. And the story itself is well done and not too bloated. A well deserved 9 and a decent platinum pursuit as well, as encourages you to learn to the skill tree and consider different approaches to enemies, mostly in master mode.

Definitely a decent palette cleanser for someone looking for a shorter, but still challenging game to platinum after a longer more drawn out game perhaps.

This game is absolutely gorgeous, the art direction is phenomenal. It's the first actual 'Next-Gen' experience, it uses the rumble and the triggers very well, everything loads extremely fast and the water effects are mindblowing.

Added to that, it's also fun and challenging with a great story. You'll become emotionally invested in Kena's beautiful story. The gameplay is unexpectedly challenging, there were many of deaths, and only on of them (I got hit by an enemy AFTER knocking the main boss out) felt unfair. It's genuinely rewarding to figure out the bosses and get the best of them.

The only reason it's not a 10, is because there were a few glitches (one of the bosses disappeared during the fight for example) and sometimes it's a bit confusing where to go. If it wasn't for those issues, this would've been a straight 10.

Only good aspect I could find is the presentation (graphics, characters, environments, music and sound). Some clever exploration but most time spent outside of combat is dull.

Game mimics Dark Souls combat without the tight controls of a Souls game. Please developers, stop making Souls combat clones if your parry and dodge controls and timing are subpar. Poor parry controls Overall poor

Overall poor and laggy combat controls

Not really sure if enemy difficulty has spikes or if it's just enemies that require parry are tough. All other enemies seemed easy to defeat.

Wait for patch, sale or if it comes to PS plus.

A stunning adventure with a beautiful game-world and tons of atmosphere. Puzzles are engaging without being too annoying, you can progress through with a degree of effort. Combat becomes complex, and it is annoying battling bosses before you’re able to really get the hang of things (I still haven’t after many hours), but it’s very satisfying when you get it right. However, the game has five difficult levels, and you can change mid-game, what excellent decision-making by the devs, meaning everyone can enjoy the game whether novice or hardcore, whether gaming many hours a week or just a few. In addition, regular saving and manual save means no frustration of redoing stages – again, just so welcome. The enemies and bosses look incredible, and Kena herself is cute. The only elements I’m not so keen on are the uber-American cartoon cheese of the children and Rot, but that’s just my personal opinion! A fabulous game; entrancing, absorbing and just pure fun. The game gets old fast; same platforming, collectible hunting, etc. The bosses are difficult. The parry system is horrible. Despite this, it is a fun game, sometimes, with a linear storyline and awesome animation. I wouldn’t spend full price, rather get it in a sale.

Kena is almost perfect as an action adventure game. Difficulty on Spirit Guide (normal) is just challenging enough to be rewarding but not overly punishing. Puzzles are interesting but not frustrating. Combat is satisfying and there is a good variety of different enemy types. Game world is fun to explore. The game doesn’t overstay its welcome, it’s not too long so I didn’t get burnt out.Kena is almost perfect as an action adventure game. Kena Bridge of Spirits is such a good game, Is like playing a Pixar movie.

Playing on the hardest difficulty available from the start, gives you a nice challenge, some of the bosses are a little bit tricky to beat.

Could have a system for the collectibles, to know which one you already got

I bought this on a bit of a whim when I first picked up my PS5 and had nothing to play.
It looked a bit cute and childish, but looked to have a fun puzzle/adventure style to the gameplay.
What I found was a charming story, filled with interesting characters, great little puzzles and some really touching moments. Some of the combat is really nicely done, and it does make you think about

Some of the combat is really nicely done, and it does make you think about the style you are using on the different enemies. The skill trees are nicely done, allowing you to pick your style of combat to suit your gameplay.
The graphics are pretty, almost in a Pixar cartoon kind of way, and the game ran with no issues at all, no frame drops, no pop-in.
I think it took me around 12 hours to complete, which was OK for the €40 price point. I would have like it to have been a little longer, but it was fine.
The only reason I have not given this game a 9 or a 10, is that I don't think it has much replay value.
But I guess the best compliment I can give is that if there is ever a Kena 2, I will absolutely be buying it.

Kena is a playful and beautiful adventure, but it does not bring any breathtaking innovation. But it has the potential to take you to a fairy tale and let you experience the story of a young girl, which is a balanced experience.

Ember Lab didn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead the developers opted for tried and true mechanics that entertained us time and again in many action adventure games, and mixed them in an almost perfect way. The beginning might be a little slow, but when Kena: Bridge of Spirits gains momentum, it becomes truly great. It’s hard for me to point out any significant flaws apart from overall lack of originality. What a debut! [12/2021, p.74]

Kena: Bridge of Spirits should take most gamers around 10 to 12 hours to complete, depending on the amount of exploring and the level of difficulty. While the blockbusters games of 2021 continue to deliver the same ho-hum experience of 2021, Kena is a much needed ray of sunshine to the current choices of titles available and more importantly, looks fantastic on the PlayStation 5.
