This is just a DLC for the first game but without the story.
combat is awkward, you walk through fauna, its laughable. MPCs/enamies are beyond crazy, they are dumber than bricks.

The game also gives you a lot of freedom to explore the world, and there are plenty of secrets to discover along the way.

The story of Horizon Forbidden West is also top-notch. Aloy must journey to the Forbidden West to find a cure for a mysterious plague that is ravaging the land. Along the way, she will face new enemies, make new friends, and learn more about the history of her world.

Overall, Horizon Forbidden West is a must-play for fans of open-world action RPGs. It is a beautiful, engaging, and emotionally powerful game that will stay with you long after you finish playing it.

Here are some additional thoughts on what makes Horizon Forbidden West good:

The machines are incredibly well-designed and they are a lot of fun to fight.
The crafting system is deep and rewarding, and it gives you a lot of options for customizing your gear.
The exploration is top-notch, and there are plenty of hidden treasures to find.
The voice acting is excellent, and the facial animation is some of the best I've seen in a video game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a game! Seriously, the main story had me glued to the controller, with twists and turns that kept me intrigued the whole time. And that flying thing? It's a blast! you'll feel like a bird soaring over those mind-blowing landscapes. The sunrises and sunsets look straight out of a fairy tale, I swear, I couldn't help but get lost in them.

Some of the side quests... well, yeah, I got into many of them, but others felt like a constant déjà vu. Repetitive to the max. That kinda took a bit of shine off the experience.

In a nutshell, Horizon Forbidden West is a fantastic game, with its gripping story, the thrill of flying that gives you goosebumps, and landscapes that are jaw-dropping. Just be careful with those side quests, as sometimes they went a bit overboard with the copy-paste. Now, go out there and have a blast!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is strange to me. The developers chose to make a game centred around the forbidden lands and how we must work together to save the world, yet these forbidden lands are less hostile than the Nora are to Aloy. The storyline chooses to follow aliens wanting a new home rather then following the set up from the previous game of a world ending threat waking up the machines which originally destroyed this planet and were only stopped by intentionally destroying humanity. This combined with a story centred around the most generic characters I've seen in gaming alongside an unchanging world which is supposed to be dying, just left me underwhelmed. The game is mechanically fine and looks gorgeous, but just follows tropes and pre done lore rather than give me a reason to play this instead of Elden ring, Horizon Zero Dawn, or any one of the other games which have released in the last few years. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Horizon Forbidden West is lazy, unseasoned, cashgrab and an insult to anyone who plays it.

I have played and completed both Horizon 1 with DLC, and Horizon Forbidden West, so this review comes as someone who has played both games and compares 1 to the other while playing them.

HFW is FULL of fluff content to make up for a lack of content. EVERYTHING is a puzzle. Need to get up to the top of a flight of stairs? Parkour here, jump here, climb this, jump there, etc. It makes events that would be easily tackled take an additional 5-10 minutes to do. It removes you from the gameplay experience to do anything at all. The first game didn't bog you down in the same way. HZD was fun in its exploration, HFW is a chore. A miserable chore. Want to climb a tall neck to expand the map? Sure, get to the tallneck, now complete a side mission unique to that tall neck. Cool, now you can climb it. For all of them. This is lazy.

The story isn't engaging in the same way either. For a lot of it I didn't care, then when I started to care, the writers legit said "I'm crunched for time, this makes sense", and listen to me, NO IT DIDN'T. The story seems to aim to be more realistic while failing to be realistic. The only person held to the standard of realism, is you the player. Which brings me to the next issue.

Aloy. Aloy didn't improve at all since HZD. The human enemies can block, parry, dodge, take cover, and seem to have an infinite amount of ammo. Aloy on the other hand can't do any of those things. The robots are MUCH more responsive than the first game. They're harder to knock down, harder to kill, and have some many abilities and high movement speed it's almost bothersome to even fight them. You also get knocked down, a lot. And you stay down, to be beaten to death before you can get up. And your only way to really beat the robots is with ammo, but you don't have a lot. Because of your limitation, ammo.

You NEED ammo to beat the robots of the game, resources have become far harder to come across because EVERYTHING requires resources. Because to my first point, everything is bogged down with fluff because the game lacks substance. Your green armor can be leveled up with resources 3 to 4 times. But so does every other weapon and armor in the game. This was done to add content and longevity to the game. I'm telling you now, it wasn't fun, and I didn't level any armor up fully.

Graphically the game is beautiful, but I beat the game in August of 2023. Every cutscene, Aloy's hair went wild with animations. The game is 69.99 in the PSN store right now.

This part contains spoilers: spoilers below

The enemies are futuristic humans with 1000s of years on our character and their allies. They have light shields that reflect all damage, mechs, and energy weapons. They lost...to enemies...shooting arrows at them. The writers created enemies that the character couldn't beat, so bad writing pushed the narrative along so they could surprise you with "Horizon 3!!!?!"

In conclusion, HFW is a spit in the face of gamers. They didn't care. It's a cash grab. It's full of fluff to keep the game going, terrible pacing, a weak character compared to BASIC human enemies, and even more so the robots and main enemies of the game. They caught lightning in a bottle the first time. The 2nd time was corporate forcing them to "do it again", and they failed. The fact that this was even nominated for Game of the Year is an insult to all of our intelligence.

Horizon Forbidden West falls short as a follow-up to Guerrilla's initial success, "Horizon Zero Dawn." The game grapples with establishing its unique identity and crafting an open world that, though visually stunning, contradicts and mars the gameplay experience. While the storyline ambitiously expands, it suffers for it, becoming less focused and burdened by an extensive cast that leaves players detached and uninvolved in the overall narrative.

Despite its flaws, the gameplay is the saving grace that held my interest until the end. Combat, in particular, often offers moments of exhilarating engagement. However, a myriad of issues plague this aspect. Likely due to the developers' focus on the open world structure, the uniqueness of Horizon's world—battling colossal mechanical dinosaurs with primitive weapons—gets overshadowed. The level design, immersive and inspired by real-life environments, ironically hampers combat fluidity. It's far too easy to become ensnared in terrain, limiting mobility and frustrating the overall experience. Melee combat, in particular, feels cumbersome and unpolished. This is a missed opportunity, as a symbiotic relationship between melee and ranged combat could have been deeply satisfying.

Further combat-related concerns persist. Engaging the mechanical beasts one-on-one is an uphill struggle; they tend to amass in groups, often near other packs. Alerting one often triggers an alert for the rest, resulting in chaotic, protracted battles devoid of respite or the chance to secure vital loot. Stealth as a combat mechanic feels monotonous and formulaic—hardly innovative given its common presence in open world games. This also extends to combat against human foes, which feels repetitive and uninspiring.

Regrettably, mobility lacks variety and intrigue. Much of the time, you'll find yourself walking or riding mechanical creatures, contributing to a considerable portion of the game feeling mindlessly traversed. Climbing mechanics are clunky and unrefined, a consistent issue throughout the gameplay.

The storyline is a convoluted mess, replete with excessive dialogue and an intricate plot revolving around immortal humans who left Earth. It veers drastically from the already imaginative premise of Zero Dawn, severely affecting narrative coherence and world believability. It seems as though the writers struggled to harness the captivating world previously established. Dialogue comes across as juvenile, characters remain underdeveloped, and gameplay feels disconnected from the plot's essence. This discord undermines the world-building established in Horizon Zero Dawn, introducing flaws that undermine immersion. Scaling back the story's stakes could have mitigated these issues, as not every game requires a world-saving narrative.

The game's redeeming qualities lie in its exceptional graphics, sound design, and music. These elements converge to create an immersive atmosphere, elevating the overall gameplay experience. Notably, the endgame—seeking out formidable machines for enhanced weaponry—echoes the gameplay loop of Monster Hunter, albeit underexplored due to the plethora of competing game elements.

Side quests often lack allure, trapped in a formulaic structure that necessitates halting progress, enduring mundane dialogue, and engaging in repetitive machine battles. This content, while explored, fails to captivate as effectively as similar endeavors by other studios in the open-world genre.

"HFW" underscores the significance of thoughtful planning. The inaugural "Horizon" game embarked on a daring journey into ambitious open-world design, enhanced by captivating storytelling and innovative mechanics. Regrettably, Guerrilla Studios missed the opportunity to build on this strong foundation, expanding the game into a sprawling sandbox. Consequently, the content feels uninspired, and core gameplay mechanics remain unpolished. The enchantment has waned, leaving a facade of style without substance. I earnestly hope that Guerrilla regains their stride in their next endeavor.

Exploring the world feels better than before, and the climbing is something the game definitely needed. There's actually a lot of content and the game is pretty big, there are random minigames you can play, races with machines, an entire arena, and many more things to do.

Unfortunately, despite the few improvements in the Open World, the game feels like a step-back from the first game in almost every other way, sure there are some quality of life improvements, melee combat is way better and the new skill tree is a nice addition, but the core gameplay still feels the exact same for the most part, and the story is such a mess, the pacing is terrible, and the ending is insultingly bad, I did like some of the new story beats but in the end it honestly feels as if the story didn't really progress.

Also the physics and the collision detection are absolutely atrocious, getting hit mid-animation while rolling perfectly to dodge an attack or doing a critical strike and getting interrupted by an enemy is just incredibly annoying.

It's a well made game, and my experience was mostly positive but I expected more after 5 whole years.
At the end of the day I actually liked it, it was a fun experience and I really wanna see how the story is gonna continue from here.

    Final Rating: "Good" ~ 7/10.

The mission structure is very much appreciated and every mission felt complete and varied with different locations to explore and lore to unpack. Combat feels solid and responsive, there is a good variety of weapons to choose from, and resources being more abundant is an improvement from Zero Dawn. The machines are balanced well enough with bosses being a reasonable challenge but not devolving into cheap Soulsborne pandering like many contemporary game devs love to partake in. However, most of the enemies in the open world aren't worth fighting, as they take too much time and effort and provide minimal XP. Which leads me to the worst aspect of this game, the level structure of the missions forces you to grind and do some side quests which really slows down progress. There is a massive level increase of the missions at the end of the game, so grinding and side quests are basically a requirement. The final boss is also incredibly difficult and takes a lot of time to beat if you aren't high level. Overall, Horizon Forbidden West is a great improvement over the original and deserves the 8/10 rating. Expand

There is no possible way that anyone could enjoy this at the same level as the first one, which was an awesome game. It truly seems that the developers wanted to make this game less fun and more of a chore. All those characters you loved from the first one??? Now Aloy engages in tedious character drama nonsense and they hate each other. Drama and emotions don't make something good, you need to actually have a plot. What a disappointment.

On the positive side, the soundtrack is WAY, WAY better and most of the excellent combat from the original entry is maintained or improved.

I gave Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition a 10.
But I'm going to give this game only a 1 because of the graphics. Why the main character doesn't feel the same as the previous game? why do they make it more "unlikeble".. And I don't want to spoil it but I found out what happens in the DLC... 70 dollars to the trash.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished the game yesterday on PS5 on normal difficulty. Many positives but a specific overwhelming negative.

The Amazing: Visuals and Audio are among the best ever for any game created. There is literally a way to enjoy the game where it's just Aloy flying on her Sun Wing and enjoying the beauty of the rendered environment across different times of the day while listening to beautiful and touching soundtracks. For example 'In the Flood' main theme song should be in the running for some award of best video gaming song

The Good: Fighting and Weapons. Such a big arsenal of weapons to choose from that allow many diverse fighting styles and weapon combos. I like the plasma mechanic a lot although it take a while to get used to. Some weapons like spears can feel a bit overpowered and some kinds of superflous like the short bow or the wierd elemental rope shooter but overall weapons are fun. Machines are also very intricate in all their animations, textures, and behaviors. A joy to engage with. Humans are o.k enemies but hardly a challenge.

The Bad: Main gripe with weapons is the very tedious, boring upgrade requirements. I got all legendary weapons maxed out and one of the few times I needed to dial down the difficult is to gather resources for their upgrades. Its like each upgrade level requires killing and precision striping of parts from 5-6 big machines and it quickly became a massive chore instead of a fun activity. Strike was attempted as a Gwent (from Witcher series) like side activity but is just a bad conceptual game. Hard to remember all the machine and land requirements so I completely skipped it. Likewise, Vista point and Ancient Ruin quests we quite boring and their development resources better spent else where. Their rewards were also very pedestrian so are not in any way needed to get stronger in the game.

The unforgivingly catastrophically terrible: Writing.. Its such a drop-off from the rest of the game to the degree that I think they hired top-world talent for the environment and graphics and got some interns to do the writing. In all my years of playing games, I have never seen such a gap in quality between gameplay and story. Even compared to the original game which was much more intriguing and suspenseful. I will give a few examples.

    SPOILERS BELOW:

The whole premise of HFW falls flat on its face in the last 5 minutes when its uncovered that the Zeniths are not after trying to extinguish life on earth after all and just wanted to stop there, rest and, and get a GAIA copy while running away from nemisis. So that makes zero sense, a group of advanced alien humans, who conquered death, can't fix the simple problem of software backup (cause yes GAIA is just a super advanced ChatGPT not some digital deity, and was backed up before) Couldn't they have just cooperated with Aloy to get a copy ? Makes no sense and completely empties the meaning of the main story.

Aloy sending her friends over to suicide missions over and over again. Most glaring is Varl. She just tells him to 'protect Alva' when Zeniths arrive in the couldren mission. Like how is he supposed to do that ? She knows how advanced they are and he only has a primitive spear and predictably lasts for a grand total of 10 seconds before getting run through by Eric and then no remorse whatsoever from Aloy as if this was always the plan ?

The complete bungling of Tilda's character. As complex as they come as a former lover of Elisabet's, art enthusiast, and a 'good' Zenith. She is just converted to a town idiot in her last scene where thinks she could just kidnap Aloy. Earlier she had reviewed Aloy's focus and must know she is capable of bringing down Apex Thunderjaws as a stretching exercise. And how ? by jumping into a gundam like specter suit ? Which ended up being one of the easiest and most pathetic end boss battles ever devised.

Feels like the narrative team just run out of ideas, changed personnel in the middle of development, or had some character death, plot 'twists', and cheesy scene quota they needed to fill and proceeded to do that without any sort of basic story QA.

Any sci-fi or fantasy work requires a certain level of suspension of belief but HFW requires an activation of stupidity to overcome the poor story structure. To say the writing is amateur hour would be an insult to amateurs many of which could have done a dramatically better job. For a normal third person shoot-em up game, this would not matter, but the HZ franchise is not Serious Sam, its an advanced Sci-Fi movie being played as a game. Aloy and the rest of the Guerrilla technical team deserve much much better than what their narrative team is delivering at the moment and hopefully they get that for HZ3 or I will happily skip to preserve how I remember this great world and character.

I was very reluctant about what rating to give this game, because my opinion about it is very ambiguous, if on the one hand I really liked Zero Dawn, on the other hand Forbiden West disappointed me in some points, starting with the similarity (and not in a good way) everything I've ever done in Zero Dawn is done again and exactly the same in Forbiden West, from the plot of the quests to be done around the map, converting Tallnecks, saving tribes that always come into conflict with other tribes, making the Cauldrons, everything exactly just as we had already spent hours doing in Zero Dawn, apart from the point that displeased me was the amount of bugs in the scenario, enemies that I have to complete a quest by killing but they are inside the wall, Aloy crossing places that should be on top and falls into the floor forcing me to climb all over again, the controls that are extremely unpredictable and loose, causing Aloy to have jerky, rough movements when you need subtlety to balance or jumping into something, I also had a game crash that closed by itself and a bizarre frame rate drop that forced me to close the game and reopen it to solve it, very disappointing is also the fact that this game doesn't run at 60 FPS at 4K it's almost unacceptable, you can clearly see that you're playing a game developed on PS4 and ported to PS5, apart from the performance mode which is blurry and choppy and of poor resolution, the main story I don't complain, it's not as bad as it gets they say, but unfortunately this game is a big CtrlC + CtrlV with small additions that don't leave you with the feeling of playing something new, just an expansion, the old one more of the same, I regret having bought this game at launch.

Horizon Forbidden West is, without any hyperbole, an absolute masterpiece, and it sets a new benchmark for graphical quality across all platforms, including PC.

In Forbidden West, the developers have outdone themselves, surpassing the already impressive foundations set by its predecessor, Horizon Zero Dawn. The intricate details present in the expansive open-world, the elaborate design of the robotic foes, and the breathtaking sequences all speak to the game's significant advancement in graphical fidelity. The stunning visuals and intricate detailing make it feel as if you are exploring a real, living world. The landscape, from the forbidding wilderness to the remnants of past civilizations like the Golden Gate Bridge, is gorgeously rendered, making each moment of exploration a true joy.

The characters, too, are exceptionally well-realized, both in terms of graphics and the performances of the actors. Every individual you encounter, whether they're central to the story or just passing by, is meticulously crafted. This dedication to detail enhances the believability of the world, allowing the player to become fully immersed in the narrative1.

The game's narrative itself is engaging and full of twists and turns, keeping players guessing right until the end. The character-centric drama is well-balanced with world-building, making for a more coherent and compelling story than its predecessor. The personal dramas and political conflicts create a tense backdrop for Aloy's journey, and the side quests are equally captivating, adding depth to the world and its inhabitants.

However, what sets Horizon Forbidden West apart from other games is not just its extraordinary graphics, but also the scale and ambition of its design. The game's world is vast and filled with variety, from the "Witcher-like" settlements to the variety of missions and side quests. All of this contributes to a genuine sense of exploration and adventure1.

In summary, Horizon Forbidden West is a groundbreaking achievement in gaming. It's not just a visual spectacle, but a riveting, well-constructed narrative set in a beautifully realized world. This game is truly a graphical masterpiece, setting a new high standard for future games across all platforms. A must-play for any gaming enthusiast.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Insane graphics in this game. Probably the best video game in terms of the visuals, the graphics and the beauty itself. God of War took the spotlight when this game came out but everyone must experiece this masterpiece on PS5. Wayyyy better than Hogwarts ' Jack of all, Master of None' Legacy. That piece of garbage was repetitive with cringe voice acting and annoying main story line. Like who tf cares about your useless trial. The goblins are attacking. I have to stop. This is not a review for that embarrasement of a game. Expand

Lamentablemente esperaba algo mejor,, le faltó un poco más de desarrollo tanto a la historia como al juego en sí, el parche de actualización del terror demasiados gb

Amazing graphics. But convoluted story. Way too much farming. Upgrading weapons and armour is a nightmare. Way too many weapon types, and you don’t know what to use.

So a well done sequel but nothing groundbreaking or any improvement for the open world genre. Over all still a solid good game.

I was in love with the Horizon Series, and after Forbidden West it was about to be my all-time favorite game, but that Burning Shores ending was so disappointing. It ruined the story for me. It was horribly written and obviously thrown in for American political reasons. It's such a shame this keeps happening.

I'm part of the lgbtq community, and even I was starting to feel weird about how there are very few honorable male characters, and how there are so many lesbian characters. So, many side quests had lesbian characters. It's not even representational of life.
Then the ending seriously threw me off, cause it just felt so out of place. There was no real story development for that love scene in the end. It seriously felt like they just threw it in to make 'woke' quota deadlines. if the 'woke' crap was just better written it would be so much more accepted, but at this point, it's really becoming a problem in ruining the art of storytelling. I can't wait for this ridiculous fad to end. Unfortunately, so many of the stories we hold so dear will be ruined by the time that happens.

This is what I loved about the first Horizon game - challenging and varied combat, made more complex with various modes of damage and resistance and various enemies, super engaging storytelling. If you like action RPGs, this game is a must.

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
