I am convinced that these games are just Graphical showcases, because thats all the Horizon franchise seems to have going for it. Imagine, a game that is set in the distant Future, where we got knocked back to prehistoric times, and we have to fight giant robot dinosaurs, SOUNDS AWESOME. But this game does nothing really new.

Aloy is still a MID protagonist, that is so very hard to

I don't know how they did it but they somehow managed to make dinosaur robots kind of boring and uninteresting. This game checks a lot of the boxes for success on a technical level. Looks great. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is strange to me. The developers chose to make a game centred around the forbidden lands and how we must work together to save the world, yet these forbidden lands are less hostile than the Nora are to Aloy. The storyline chooses to follow aliens wanting a new home rather then following the set up from the previous game of a world ending threat waking up the machines which originally destroyed this planet and were only stopped by intentionally destroying humanity. This combined with a story centred around the most generic characters I've seen in gaming alongside an unchanging world which is supposed to be dying, just left me underwhelmed. The game is mechanically fine and looks gorgeous, but just follows tropes and pre done lore rather than give me a reason to play this instead of Elden ring, Horizon Zero Dawn, or any one of the other games which have released in the last few years. Exploring the world feels better than before, and the climbing is something the game definitely needed. There's actually a lot of content and the game is pretty big, there are random minigames you can play, races with machines, an entire arena, and many more things to do.

Unfortunately, despite the few improvements in the Open World, the game feels like a step-back from the first game in almost every other way, sure there are some quality of life improvements, melee combat is way better and the new skill tree is a nice addition, but the core gameplay still feels the exact same for the most part, and the story is such a mess, the pacing is terrible, and the ending is insultingly bad, I did like some of the new story beats but in the end it honestly feels as if the story didn't really progress.

Also the physics and the collision detection are absolutely atrocious, getting hit mid-animation while rolling perfectly to dodge an attack or doing a critical strike and getting interrupted by an enemy is just incredibly annoying.

It's a well made game, and my experience was mostly positive but I expected more after 5 whole years.
At the end of the day I actually liked it, it was a fun experience and I really wanna see how the story is gonna continue from here.

    Final Rating: "Good" ~ 7/10.

I really don't know wtf they were thinking by expanding the worst parts of the game. There is no possible way that anyone could enjoy this at the same level as the first one, which was an awesome game. It truly seems that the developers wanted to make this game less fun and more of a chore. All those characters you loved from the first one??? Now Aloy engages in tedious character drama nonsense and they hate each other. Drama and emotions don't make something good, you need to actually have a plot. What a disappointment.

On the positive side, the soundtrack is WAY, WAY better and most of the excellent combat from the original entry is maintained or improved.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished the game yesterday on PS5 on normal difficulty. Many positives but a specific overwhelming negative.

The Amazing: Visuals and Audio are among the best ever for any game created. There is literally a way to enjoy the game where it's just Aloy flying on her Sun Wing and enjoying the beauty of the rendered environment across different times of the day while listening to beautiful and touching soundtracks. For example 'In the Flood' main theme song should be in the running for some award of best video gaming song

The Good: Fighting and Weapons. Such a big arsenal of weapons to choose from that allow many diverse fighting styles and weapon combos. I like the plasma mechanic a lot although it take a while to get used to. Some weapons like spears can feel a bit overpowered and some kinds of superflous like the short bow or the wierd elemental rope shooter but overall weapons are fun. Machines are also very intricate in all their animations, textures, and behaviors. A joy to engage with. Humans are o.k enemies but hardly a challenge.

The Bad: Main gripe with weapons is the very tedious, boring upgrade requirements. I got all legendary weapons maxed out and one of the few times I needed to dial down the difficult is to gather resources for their upgrades. Its like each upgrade level requires killing and precision striping of parts from 5-6 big machines and it quickly became a massive chore instead of a fun activity. Strike was attempted as a Gwent (from Witcher series) like side activity but is just a bad conceptual game. Hard to remember all the machine and land requirements so I completely skipped it. Likewise, Vista point and Ancient Ruin quests we quite boring and their development resources better spent else where. Their rewards were also very pedestrian so are not in any way needed to get stronger in the game.

The unforgivingly catastrophically terrible: Writing.. Its such a drop-off from the rest of the game to the degree that I think they hired top-world talent for the environment and graphics and got some interns to do the writing. In all my years of playing games, I have never seen such a gap in quality between gameplay and story. Even compared to the original game which was much more intriguing and suspenseful. I will give a few examples.

    SPOILERS BELOW:

The whole premise of HFW falls flat on its face in the last 5 minutes when its uncovered that the Zeniths are not after trying to extinguish life on earth after all and just wanted to stop there, rest and, and get a GAIA copy while running away from nemisis. So that makes zero sense, a group of advanced alien humans, who conquered death, can't fix the simple problem of software backup (cause yes GAIA is just a super advanced ChatGPT not some digital deity, and was backed up before) Couldn't they have just cooperated with Aloy to get a copy ? Makes no sense and completely empties the meaning of the main story.

Aloy sending her friends over to suicide missions over and over again. Most glaring is Varl. She just tells him to 'protect Alva' when Zeniths arrive in the couldren mission. Like how is he supposed to do that ? She knows how advanced they are and he only has a primitive spear and predictably lasts for a grand total of 10 seconds before getting run through by Eric and then no remorse whatsoever from Aloy as if this was always the plan ?

The complete bungling of Tilda's character. As complex as they come as a former lover of Elisabet's, art enthusiast, and a 'good' Zenith. She is just converted to a town idiot in her last scene where thinks she could just kidnap Aloy. Earlier she had reviewed Aloy's focus and must know she is capable of bringing down Apex Thunderjaws as a stretching exercise. And how ? by jumping into a gundam like specter suit ? Which ended up being one of the easiest and most pathetic end boss battles ever devised.

Feels like the narrative team just run out of ideas, changed personnel in the middle of development, or had some character death, plot 'twists', and cheesy scene quota they needed to fill and proceeded to do that without any sort of basic story QA.

Any sci-fi or fantasy work requires a certain level of suspension of belief but HFW requires an activation of stupidity to overcome the poor story structure. To say the writing is amateur hour would be an insult to amateurs many of which could have done a dramatically better job. For a normal third person shoot-em up game, this would not matter, but the HZ franchise is not Serious Sam, its an advanced Sci-Fi movie being played as a game. Aloy and the rest of the Guerrilla technical team deserve much much better than what their narrative team is delivering at the moment and hopefully they get that for HZ3 or I will happily skip to preserve how I remember this great world and character.

I'm part of the lgbtq community, and even I was starting to feel weird about how there are very few honorable male characters, and how there are so many lesbian characters. So, many side quests had lesbian characters. It's not even representational of life.
Then the ending seriously threw me off, cause it just felt so out of place. There was no real story development for that love scene in the end. It seriously felt like they just threw it in to make 'woke' quota deadlines. if the 'woke' crap was just better written it would be so much more accepted, but at this point, it's really becoming a problem in ruining the art of storytelling. I can't wait for this ridiculous fad to end. Unfortunately, so many of the stories we hold so dear will be ruined by the time that happens.

Aloy has got to be one of the most insufferable characters ive ever played. Shes acting so cocky the whole game. And her FOCUS does EVERYHING FOR HER. Without the focus she is nothing. GG really thought they created some epic character and this whole game they are just stroking their d***s to how cool she is.
Her voice performance is mostly good but very often she sounds out of breath even in cutscenes where nothing is happening.

And i hope you like the focus thingy because youll hear it 500000 times its so annoying.

People tend to praise the combat. I think its **** Sure the robot designs are incredible. But they dont work in fights. Every machine is way too eratic. Id spend most of the time just jumping in the air to get the slow mo shot off. And they STILL move to fast to aim at specific components. I legit spent 50% of the combat in slow mo and it sucks. The art direction for machines is amazing. For the tribes however... some of the most uninspired designs ever. They all look the same except for their armour color. And they all live 5km from eachother so they dont have any unique culture. Just reskins.

The cauldrons are good especially the tallneck one. And the map design is great.

The story is some kind of uninteressting, with a few nice twists, but the conversations in the base with my "friends" are somthing lame. I kind of dont connect with all of them and thats because Aloy also dont care. She has always the same face (i would say resting b*tch face syndrome) with the same facial expression. I wanted to love Horizon, both of them. I wanted Aloy to be my female Link, as a protagonist with an awesome Bow and fighting skills. But it fails to deliver these feelings to me. Overall a pretty game for me, but after i finish it, i will never touch it again. Maybe i will buy the third installment in a few years to finish the complete story of Horizon.

It also features literal drowning because in the past 40 years in gaming history, there have never been good water levels - and clearly nobody decided to start having those here, either.

This game is so beautiful and so good to play. The is story is great, but in my opinion the Ted Faro's story could be more elaborated. Also there are some inconsistencies in graphics like Far Zenith NPCs look not detailed in most parts. 60 fps is great, but sometimes blurry in few scenes. Can't wait for PC version.

It's beautiful and the world design is visually impressive. Other than that I didn't enjoy much about Horizon Forbidden West. Especially in terms of story & characters it's very bland. There are no meaningful choices. Exploration is barely rewarded or matters at all. It's a beautiful but empty open world.

Gameplay is still uninteresting, almost stupid, despite the new weapons. No matter what animal you're fighting, just keep dodging, shoot, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot......and.....pick up another annoying loot nearby. The story is just not interesting, as well as all of the characters that you meet in the entire game. Aloy acts with a moral superiority with everyone that makes the main character hateful.
The game has a lot of glitches, puzzles and platforming, all of them are so tedious and a way to add extra time that are a big bunch of crap.
The quantity of icons in the map are just crazy, bonfires to save the game every 100 steps.
They picked all the bad stuff that Ubisoft's open world games have.
Now I can compare HFW with Days Gone, and DG is much better than this.

Despite the open world also being largely affected by these issues, its quality is completely subjective, but I do think comparatively it is pretty strong. In essence, it is simply an expansion to Zero Dawn, a safe move by Guerilla Games, one that you can't fault but also have to feel some disappointment in. Expand

The armour and weapons upgrade system is overly convoluted, it took 5 hours just to find the resources I needed to fully upgrade my bow and armour set and by that point it wasn’t worth using as I found a higher level weapon which then also needed hours of grinding resources to upgrade. The machine combat is where this game shines just like the first game. The designs are spectacular and the fights can really be something special, this is the games strong point.

The story is nowhere near as engaging or as interesting as the first game.

New rideable mounts are cool but still feel very restricted and “janky”

Now, the worst part of this game, combat vs human enemies! The human enemies are tougher than thunder jaws and hit harder than them too. One section of the game (without spoilers) involves fighting a group of human enemies in a cave system. This was the jankiest combat experience and just wasn’t fun at all. I was clipping into walls, falling off edges, being locked into consistent stagger animations and my melee attacks were doing next to zero damage. The melee combat and human enemy combat needs a complete revamp! The best way to deal with humans is stealth and even that gets repetitive and frustrating when enemies will see you through a wall or your stealth kill triggers a generic melee attack instead resulting in the entire basing knowing your location. Side quests are decent but a lot of them are just fetch quests or go here and kill this thing. Pretty disappointed with how this one turned out. I hope Horizon 3 changes the issues I have above because in my opinion they ruin the game for me, I just didn’t find it fun.

Summary: Good game, with poor developing choices

The graphics are beautiful, and the game knows this by showing you the landscape from high ledges more than one time during the main story and side missions. The former is nice and fits well with its predecessor. The maschine designs are cool and the world from zero dawn still appealing. However, this game is simply too long. The dialogues are drawn-out and the side mission are tedious without adding much to the world, since the first part already uncovered most mysteries. There are many unnecessary maschine fights which feel artifical: Its used as an easy and cheap obstacle to many times, even if its just illogical for the maschines to appear at exact that moment in the mission. And it will happen in nearly every mission. The first minigames and collectibles are nice, but they become boring very early.

The gameplay is a bit expanded, but most things are unnecessary, especially if you play on lower difficulty levels. My advice: Play mostly the main story and do side quest only to level up. At the end, you are still free to do all the side quests and will have an easier time doing it because of unlocked mechanics. Although you probably will abandon this game way before you have done everything, if I had to guess.

Nonetheless, I wanted to know what mystery was behind the ending of zero dawn, and therefore played it to a great extent. That being said, I will definitely neither play the anounced/teasered third part of the series nor the DLC.

HFW suffers from bland characters (with few exceptions), and a lackluster story that goes completely off the rails towards the end. Someone compared it to Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, which seems fitting.

The story doesn't offer too many interesting elements. The most interesting one from HZD was Aloys backstory and the story of... well, the state the world is in, really. But that story has already been told, so what's left? Not too much besides adding "just one more bad thing" and clan wars. And the latter I couldn't care less about.

Another issue is Aloy's writing. The way she acts towards a certain character we know from HZD makes no sense. Nothing that character has done warrants that treatment at that point in time. Furthermore, she keeps talking during gameplay, sometimes pretty much spelling out solutions to puzzles after less than a minute of looking around. Look, Aloy, I love you, but you need to shut up for a minute.

The gameplay is largely the same, which is okay, I guess. More of the same.

The new areas to explore are unfortunately rather forgettable. The only one I remember is the flooded underwater area you visit at some point during the story. The rest is also "more of the same" but in a different location.

I didn't encounter too many bugs a few months or so after release, there was only a racing minigame that broke in a spectacular fashion, which was more funny than annoying. Performance was good, the 60 FPS mode is lovely. It's so smooth but looks beautiful at the same time. I hope all developers adopt this on console.

Honestly, unless you're a die-hard fan of the world of Horizon and you're super interested in clan wars, you should probably skip this game or get it at a steep discount.

I'll start of by saying that the world for this game is amazing. Probably the greatest attention to detail I've ever seen that makes it feel like I'm exploring a real world. Has an engaging story too!

That being said, all the extra visuals and details make the combat a miserable experience. Especially when you play on a hard difficulty that makes it so that you can die at any moment.

That being said, all the extra visuals and details make the combat a miserable experience. Especially when you play on a hard difficulty that makes it so that you can die at any moment. Get stuck on a small rock or twig? Dead. Got too close to a wall? You'll start climbing it and now you're dead. Fences, logs, rivers, rocks, and all sorts of other details that make the game visually amazing serve to destroy many of the combat encounters.

If you don't play on a hard difficulty and you're into good story, this game is a 10. If you're like me and you're all about combat and challenge, you'll probably find this extremely frustrating.

the graphics of this game is gorgeous and vibrant and it has a huge and varied world for you to explore.
but the problems start with the core gameplay and missions which is bloated and sometimes boring. I still have serious problems with the core concept of this game which is fighting advanced robots using bow and arrows and a spear that doesn't deal much damage we are fighting huge robots not bears and wolves or something! most times I struggled to find the weak spots of the enemy robots and if you shoot non vulnerable parts of them it deals little to no damage and it annoys me. the game constantly makes you confused and each enemy is like a puzzle, some people might find this cool but it's actually very annoying so in some boss fights I had no choice than setting the difficulty on story thank god the story difficulty exists.
the side missions are so boring that i couldn't bother to continue doing them but if you don't do the side missions and just continue doing story missions you will end up much weaker than the enemies who move fast and shoot rockets at you and you only have a good old bow and arrow and a useless slingshot.
overall I rank this game 7/10 just because of it's great story and universe even though I hate the core mechanics of this series' gameplay

Game play is more fun (improved combat), improved movement through the world, improved skill tree with different ways to play. But melee combat goes out of the window later in the game if you are playing higher difficulties.

    Regarding characters.
Lots of Irritating characters that promote their progressive views from RL to you. Male white characters are almost all bad guys, black predominately good and females are all paragon except one important character.. It's hilarious. And where are Asians, could count them on fingers of one hand hahahah. And it seems that 50% of the cast is LGBT. Please guys, be more rational with this.. The combat in this game felt like a huge downgrade, weapons like the cannister rope gun seemed entirely pointless because the creatures move so fast it's impossible to actually ignite the cannisters once they've been attached. Maybe this is a different story on PC.

Let’s talk about the positives parts first. The game is absolutely gorgeous in both performance and Quality thanks to recent update that solve most of the problems of performan even tough they still are pop up that subsist and some shimmering but it is one of the most beautiful game I ever play. The character models and animation improved a lot compared to Zero Dawn. Some of the side stories are really well written and may feel even better than the main quests. If you are used to play open world adventure games, you might be able to at least appreciate this game.

Let’s talk about the negative parts know. The worst part in my opinion is the combat system, it was already bad in Zero Dawn and while it improved a little it still doesn’t live up to today’s standards. You can’t lock your ennemies so if they jump or fly too much or you are fighting multiple robots at the same, it becomes an unfun mess. Not quiet sure how the devs fought it was find not to include a lock system for the enemies but here we are, the combat are the worst gameplay parts in the game. And while dodging enemies attacks, it’s not rare to get stuck on parts of the decor that you couldn’t see thanks to the bad camera. The AI that « help » you on some fights are completely useless. The main story isn’t that good either, it tries too hard and some parts are hard to swallow or make little sense even of the game take action in the 30th century. The game took a lot of inspiration on other popular games like Breath of The wild, The Witcher, AC, Mass Effect but somehow manage to do less than all of those games in the part or copied. And if you enjoyed the liberty that some of those games gave you in character building, you are out of like. The game barely let you make any decisions and you can’t really influence Aloy personality and how she choses to deal with things. For a true RPG fan, it might be a big deal. The games still to this day still have technical issues and bugs, I got stuck in the air and it decors a few time or enemies that walk on the air, their AI isn’t that good either, you can walk in front of them and they won’t see you. The combat system is just weak and boring. In that kind game, not being able to influence the conversation makes you care less and not wanting to listen to all of those conversations. So yeah if you are used to some higher profile RPGs, this game is playable but it won’t live to those standards.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Forbidden West is pretty much the same deal as Zero Dawn (obviously excluding the story). The open world is rich with various sidequests and activities to do. The graphics, facial animations and lip synching are among the best I've ever seen yet, and the voice acting, particularly from Ashly Birch as Aloy is great. Unfortunately it's just not as good. It consists of a decent story but ends inconclusively, the climbing controls are even more finnicky and unresponsive than the first one, the underwhelming combat was not improved, the tutorials and challenges in the melee pits are simply badly designed and there are way more bugs including some that even required me to reload a save. That would've been acceptable had it only affected the PS4 version, but there's no excuse for it to happen on PS5. It's still mostly a fun game, just a step back. Bigger but not better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Horizon: Forbidden West is a disappointment compared not just with Zero Dawn, but also with the rest of the industry. It has nice graphics and an improved melee combat system. But the story is awful, Aloy is irrecognisable as a character compared with Zero Dawn, and the melee combat system is still not good enough.

    SPOILER ALERT

The overarching story has no real direction other than to stop a group of enemies (humans that escaped the old world thousands of years ago and have extended their lives with technology) from ending the world. You stop them and then you learn there is a messy blob of mechs and AIs following the old humans through outer space to Earth to kill them, oh boy that's some lazy BS from writers setting up Part 3. There are some nice sub-stories regarding the relations of various tribes, and many side quests are actually entertaining, but the main course is just bad. Whereas in Zero Dawn we had a slowly unfolding mystery that captivated us and carried us to the end.

Aloy in this game is just an emotionless piece of wood. She learns some news, doesn't care. Someone talks to her, she acts bored. An emergency happens, apathy. She escapes death, she's cool. She's being flirted by the final boss (a scene that made me cringe...), acts like it didn't happen. I could go on and on. Where is the Aloy from Zero Dawn who wanted to passionately discover the world and worried to save humanity from the machines?

Melee combat was poor on Zero Dawn. It has been vastly improved compared with Zero Dawn's simplistic one-button attacks, but it's still nowhere near decent. There are various combos to learn but are a bit complex for an action game, and timings to continue combos are vague. It's not as difficult as a fighting game, but I skipped most of the melee combat because it's not intuitive and good enough, unlike 2018's God of War or other action games.

The game's world map is undeniably gorgeous. There are definitely cues taken from Zelda: Breath of the Wild in how you traverse the world. By the game's end you even unlock a robotic pterosaur to fly anywhere you want to, much quicker than on foot or by riding a quadruped machine.

Graphics in this game are very good for what is a cross-gen game that has to run on PS4, PS4 Pro and PS5. On PS5 you can choose between Fidelity Mode (30 fps at 4K), Performance Mode (60 fps at 1800p checkerboard) and a new Balanced Mode (the Fidelity Mode at 40 fps with dynamic resolution). There is even an option for VRR if you have a VRR-compatible screen. I played the game at 60 fps even though the Performance Mode hadn't been patched yet. It used to be plagued by shimmer and blur, but it was fixed a few months ago and it looks very nice and clean, finally.

Even if you are a fan of Zero Dawn and want to see what happens next, I'd advise to buy this game only when on a big sale. Full price is definitely not worth it. And keep your expectations low.

Here are eight reasons why this game is worse than its predecessor:

    - Bugs and glitches
The game started right away with a game breaking progression bug in the tutorial (Seriously? Get your **** together Guerilla Games) and overall its one of the worst PS4/5 exclusives on the technical side. Bugged quests, bugged npcs, bugged enemies, Aloy has broken hair physics all the time, and lots and lots of minor stuff. HZD was clearly better in that department.

    - Clunky controls
Playing the game feels way worse now. Its still not bad but not nearly as smooth as HZD. Lots of stuff has weird controls, for example you have to awkwardly jump up to activate your grappling hook, and when you want to drag stuff with it you cant move by yourself. Wtf? Combat is imprecise due to a missing lock on system, puzzling is often very tedious, climbing is janky, and diving is a hot mess with a broken camera.

    - No next gen graphics
As the title reads, the graphics are good for a PS4 game but native PS5 games like Rift Apart or Demon´s Souls are outclassing HFW. The game doesnt look much better than HZD five years ago.

    - The Zelda BotW ripoff glider sucks
Its slow, the flying animations look terrible, and the open world simply doesnt provide the verticality to use it effectively. BotW is the most vertical open world game ever and even had insane stuff like downhill paths that where play tested to have the perfect angle so you can smoothly glide over them. HFW doesnt have any of this. The glider is so useless that I often forgot it existed.

    - The Witcher 3 Gwint ripoff minigame is boring
The presentation is stale, it lacks good music, and there arent nearly enough people to play against. You cant play during missions or against other characters. Its bare bones compared to Witcher 3 or RDR2 minigames.

    - More bad story
The weakest aspect of HZD was its weak story with poor writing and generic characters, so in HFW you have way more story with way more boring dialogue and fifteen minute long cut scenes. Its often very annoying. Skip Skip Skip.

    - Identity politics
I rarely complain about these things, Im a tolerant person and I think everyone should get a fair and equal chance. But in this game its just aggravating. HFW makes almost every white person in the game look like an unsympathetic prick. Most of the population in this game is black/hispanic/asian anyway but almost every time you seen a white man or woman they have a very ugly or evil face and voice and they do dumb and evil things. Why? HZD handled this much better.

    -Price tag
This game is $80 on PS5, which is a straight up scam because the PS4 version is $70 and contains a free PS5 upgrade. There is no point in buying the PS5 version at all. Besides that no game should be $80. I bought this game for $25 on discount. Dont buy $80 games!

    Summary:
They tried to make the sequel bigger and better, with more features and stuff to do, but all they came up with was copying other games while they made the things that made HZD a good game worse. Also the PS4 is probably holding the game back but that doesnt excuse all the technical issues. The game still has good graphics, gameplay and exploration. But it just seems game developers can go to the best universities and learn how to make the best graphics and animations, but talent and genius like the teams behind Zelda and Elden Ring have is something you cant learn anywhere. This game isnt a masterpiece, its a fairly solid entertainment product but nothing more. And it lacks the novelty from the first game. 7/10

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
