Every male character of note from Horizon 1, 2 and previous DLC has been deleted making way for the new LGBT character they’ve decided force upon us. To avoid spoilers, I won’t say any more about the topic, but I am sue you can guess how things unfold. Not a single memorable character to speak of with Aloy herself morphing into an empowered, arrogant, ignorant unlikeable protagonist. Then there’s the hypocritical storyline that focuses on control via brainwashing, which the game itself is doing to those playing it by forcing an ideology that’s deeply offensive to many. There’s no doubt that the graphics are superb and they are using a brilliant engine, but it’s difficult to enjoy because everything else about it is so disappointing.… Expand

    I was not a fan of this series, mostly because I did not like the characters and storytelling. but this is the worst of the series. Very boring and flat. I give it 2 points only because of the graphics / technology / engine is OK.

    Boring and empty DLC. Quests are monotonous and not interesting. It feels like it was done just to show everyone what everyone has been tired of for a long time. I don't recommend for buying. Waste of money.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've played Horizon since Zero Dawn, I bought “Forbidden West” from the pre-sale and this DLC I also bought in a pre-sale, so I have the items from the pre-sale.

    So this opinion is from someone who has owned and played Horizon for a long time.

    I am disappointed with the turn that Aloy's story took, she was a marginalized girl who surpassed herself until she became the savior of Meridian and then of the world... that story captivates and makes a lot of sense, it feels natural and organic.

    But now, they suddenly add a character out of nowhere, which shortly after meeting Aloy creates a sentimental connection, to the point of keeping her always worried about "fixing things with Seyka". It's disappointing that Guerilla has to comply with forced inclusion political agendas, even though they give you the apparent option to choose, it's obvious the disturbance that Seyka causes in Aloy.

    It doesn't even feel like you're “playing” Aloy in the game, she feels like a different character, completely weak and fragile compared to the Aloy from the previous games and the Frozen Wilds DLC.

    The final scene of the kiss, at that point is already irrelevant, they have guided the player throughout the DLC towards a version of Aloy confused, disturbed and in a toxic relationship with another woman.

    The main reason why I have played Horizon is because of the story, I don't care so much about the graphics or the FPS that they now praise so much. For me the story in this DLC is disappointing, and for that reason I give my rating and pertinent opinion.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unexpected underwhelming Disappointment For me Horizon: Forbidden West - Burning Shores was the most anticipated Expansion of the last decade. But even without my personal expectations it turned out to be as close as possible to a complete disaster. But like almost every entertainment product regardless of the medium it also comes with positive aspects so I'll start with everything H:BS did well.

    Visuals: As all Horizon Entries before, it aesthetically looks astounding. The Environment is gorgeous and the mix between Sea, Beach, Ruins, Flora and Magma is just beautiful

    Tech: After completing the DLC it should be more than clear why H:BS is exclusive to next Gen. The Bossfight teased in the trailers is incredible from a technical standpoint

    Gameplay: While the very few additions to the combat skill tree make almost no impact, I enjoyed the additions to the exploration Gameplay- Especially the occasions where the player can make own climbing paths.

    Now we're looking at the core which is the content and which is very problematic for multiple reasons.

    Size: The Main story is short but within the range of being tolerable for a DLC. But besides that it's like a punch in the face how empty H:BS is. Only 3 very generic side quests and some collectibles and a cauldron but no strike players, machine race tracks, Bandit camps, tall necks

    Even more outraging is how there is almost no dialogue (both quantity and quality) and especially lore that contributes to the overall plot. The Datapoints are as trivial as they are short

    Map: everyone expected that BS will be reached through exiting the Map in No Man's Land trough the Hoover Dam. Which they choose to not do which is a shame. Hoover Dam will now remain unused and unexplored forever while BS is isolated from the main game and is reached trough loading screen

    And the size that is always proclaimed to be ~ 1/3 of the Maingame is a straight lie. In Reality it's roughly 1/5 of the landmass and as said under the content size point it's frustratingly empty and a big void of content. There is also almost nothing of value beneath the water surface except copy and past ruin assets from overworld buildings

    Story: let's get over the great controversy first. It's undeniable that H:BS is packed with postmodern and sometimes radical agenda to a degree where it looks like a fever dream and it's incredible that this propaganda got green lighted during development. As expected the toxic and exorbitant apologetic minority that was intended to be pleased thinks that everyone against this has a problem with the "what" but the truth is that it's the "how". The new sidekick is very unlikable in first place and seems to be a cheap copy of the protagonist that inherited all negative aspects multiplied by 10. This makes the Romance part even more cursed and forced. It single-handedly ruins the protagonist which not only acts totally out of character but also questions her sanity if she falls in love with a worse mirror version of herself like a true narcissist. Even the "rejection" option is no true rejection it's just "I want but not yet"

    The Villain also suffers from the same disease. Offscreen he's kinda charismatic and smart but whenever he enters a scene he acts as stupid and against his own plan as possible. He's absolutely stereotypical and is portrayed as pure evil. Instead of linking him to established lore his backstory was created out of thin air and his existence is just unnecessary to drive the plot of the 3rd installment forward. Everything that we got from him and the dlc as support/setup for the future could've been another Datapoint that already should've been included in H:FW.

    Overall the writing of dialogue and characters is just bland, uncreative and repetitive. A Nightmare. Lore/overarching story components were almost entirely missing and the few we got are useless. A sad Shadow of what Horizon originally stands for

    Tltr: A Good DLC should improve the Maingame and add Things that elevates the whole experience. But Burning Shores is even more flawed than the base game and drastically ramped up every negative aspect of it. It's just a very nice Tech Demo for PS5 exclusive Content but nothing more. It could be used as example for the definition of "wasted potential"

    The direction this franchise takes is a very dark path and kills every Joy and anticipation for the next installment. GG became my most favored Developer with H:ZD and always had a the Benefit of doubt and the Horizon franchise was 1 of only 2 where I still made preorders even after the slightly disappointing Sequel but this abomination of a DLC made me regret that instantly. There is no way I'm paying for future Horizon Content and supporting Guerilla Games and everything they stand for. This is a franchise killer and I highly recommend to save the 20$/€ for this 3-6h long Insult. But watch the Bossfight on a video Plattform of your choice.    … Expand

    I was so excited for this DLC! Pre ordered it and everything. Once I finally got it downloaded, I fired it up and eagerly awaited to get back into the Horizon world. The graphics were stunning as expected. I played around for a little over an hour and quickly found out... I wasn't feeling it, it wasn't really that super exciting. It was late, so I decided to shut it down for the night andI was so excited for this DLC! Pre ordered it and everything. Once I finally got it downloaded, I fired it up and eagerly awaited to get back into the Horizon world. The graphics were stunning as expected. I played around for a little over an hour and quickly found out... I wasn't feeling it, it wasn't really that super exciting. It was late, so I decided to shut it down for the night and try again the next day...

    Well, the next day I found out about the whole "Aloy is a lesbian" thing and how much people were lashing out on it. Looked at a few vids of the ending and was super shocked Guerilla Games went that route! I really don't care about someone's sexuality, but forcing me, a straight man, to have no choice but to be a lesbian with a chick I just met 2 days ago?? No.

    Haven't been able to play the game since. Plus, feeling the lack of "new" content, I wasn't super interested to play again anyways. What a waste of $20 bucks. I don't even feel like I could play the first or second one again. Thanks Guerilla, really ruined the franchise for me and I'm sure many others...    … Expand

    Because of the production budget, this DLC has great graphics, sound, etc.. Where it falls down spectacularly is the characters and the story. These were always the low points of the Horizon series compared to the technical aspects but in Burning Shores they have got so much worse. The story choices have made this DLC one to very much avoid. I will never play a future Horizon game.

    The graphics are slightly better than the main game - but certainly not so much better that it couldn't have made it out on the PS4.
    Aloy and Seyka's relationship seems very artificial to me! In reality, I have absolutely nothing against same-sex relationships, but I don't think it has to be in every current game or new series on Netflix. It often seems extremely artificial just so that you can follow every trend. In the games there can definitely be space, but it should give the player the decision.    … Expand

    The graphics were beautiful like always, but why did they have to add romance to the series and make the character gay? Can't women be strong without being gay, or is PlayStation trying to stereotype women and say only strong women are gay. Really disappointed in the direction of the story, and I won't be playing any future games.

And then you complain about the people who point out this nonsense and are immediately called homophobic just because they refuse to accept a forced queer relationship without being given a direct alternative. They're just trying desperately to force this LGBTQ agenda on us. Anyone who disagrees is immediately homophobic. They rob us of the ability to express our free opinions on Metacritic simply because it doesn't conform to their imposed agenda. I recommend you replay the section of Horizon Forbidden West where she meets Avad again and try the heart option, paying attention to what Aloys says to him and what her facial and body expressions are like at that moment. She felt flattered by him throughout the conversation, not disgusted, as many misinterpret. But now they act like nothing happened between them, even though that's completely wrong. She obviously had feelings for him but all of a sudden she became a lesbian. If that doesn't make it clear what kind of propaganda they shoved into it, then I don't know what does. There isn't even an option to opt out her. It doesn't matter what you choose. No options ruled out Aloy not wanting to be with her. With the brain, she's just saying she's not ready yet. With the fist that she has no place for this relationship at the moment because of her mission to save the world. But what they all have in common is that if the circumstances were more appropriate, Aloy would certainly get into a relationship with her. Either when the world is saved or she is emotionally ready for it. So now it's canon that she's a lesbian, and everything that went before between her and Avad was completely ignored by the developers just to push through there imposed agenda. If it wasn't so, the developers should at least have offered the option to kiss Avad as well, since the two have known each other since the very first game and have been through hell together. But no, she just has to be a lesbian without ifs and buts, regardless of whether it fits or not… Expand

    Really love the first game but the second wasn't that good this DLC it's really really disappointing a waste of time if they don't change something I'm gonna skip the next game because everything is too repetitive and boring it's like this franchise doesn't evolve

    I LOVED the base game, and just finished my second play through when the DLC released. I was THRILLED to play.
    I think of it as a story driven monster hunter....but then the DLC, which feels empty and directionless. This isn't 25 dollars worth of DLC, it clearly was added to milk just a few more dollars. She is mission driven to a fault, just like her predecessor/genetic "mother", who died alone trying to give the world a tomorrow. This theme adds to the tragedy of the character.     Long: Technically gorgeous. The rest is just bad.
    The map is big, but empty compared to the original games.
    The story is poorly written and executed with ex machina solutions and plot armor.
    WOKE agenda is everywhere: all women are virtuous, all bad characters are men, except gay couples ofc, gay Alloy on top.
    Cringe dialogues repeating "The Message" and characters speak a modern language completely not fitting who and where they are.
    Alloy's new crush/sidekick is Mary Sue at its finest.

    In total think of it like this:
    H Zero Dawn = Lucas Original SW Trilogy
    H Forbidden West = Lucas SW Prequels

I have to leave another one but with 0 this time... While Horizon games are amongst my favourite this DLC left me with a very bad taste. Short, buggy and with script mistakes that spoil the outcome. The last "boss fight" was although great and it redeemed in a way the not so good experience but then the end was the opposite of the cherry on the cake unfortunately... and for me it had the opposite effect, turning my enjoyment of the game into a total disappointment. Well done Guerilla :( Oh and now it seems that you can no longer say what you feel on Metacritic unless it's something they approve... Sad...… Expand

    I highly do not recommend. Because it's so boring and unnecessary, simply to tell you know what!!! that all. nothing in the DLC cont be found except a boring walkthrough and characters but this writhing problem chase this series sine first game. The game is poorly written.

    I love Horizon games, but this so called DLC made me feel like it was made by different studio. There is no soul in it. It feels like whoever made it, in the process realised story is weak and to spice it they made Aloy a lesbian or bisexual. And that’s it. I wish i could forget this dlc and patiently wait for third game.

    Unnecessary DLC just to convert one object into... Games from this studio were always on the bad writing side as well as the characters. This DLC does not make any difference it cant provide at least average writing or good characters. They just followed checkboxes to do all DLC. But one thing DLC proved is the stunning visuals, the game looks so beautiful in rotten writing etc.

    I played the DLC but it was so boring, that I just skipped every dialogue in this DLC. I don't like it. Frozen Wilds was much better and cooler DLC.

    This DLC is bad. It is short. Couple of hours. A lot of bugs. FPS was all over the place at final boss (was playing on PS5). Expensive for a short dlc. Story was rushed and of-course full of woke lgbt propaganda. Because stron female cannot be straight anymore. Being straight (and God forbid Male) i a biggest sin of all. They destroyed one of the best games and stories ever.

    I was eagerly waiting for this expansion, just to find the same old tired open world formula / busywork gameplay. Sure, graphics are nice, but story and gameplay were a total letdown. It adds basically nothing over the base game.

Also exploding flowers that just required shooting, seemed odd to just be in this one area with this area being the same as previous areas. Seyka is too similar to Aloy, in fact almost a clone. Another know-it-all even though they don’t know-it-all, overly sure of their abilities. Double Aloy wasn’t good. Machines, the toad thing seemed superfluous and The Waterwing is only needed for a tiny part of the main quest. The aerial vista addition was follow a line, if you stray too far from the line ... start again, follow the line ... I mean yeah great fun how video games have progressed. The amount of Quen as well didn’t make any sense good/bad. The DLC is just shallow.

    The ending was chaotic and frustrating, didn’t even progress the story forward. And a bow and arrow against a machine like that ... err yeah, right you would need an army. And the romantic part as ending - is an option, but didn’t fit the story at all. Only having known this person for a short time, this person being so similar to the main character ... it just didn’t fit. Felt like it had been shoe horned in as an afterthought almost.

    Huge fan, but ultimately totally disappointed by this DLC.    … Expand

After the initial release 14 months ago, Sony lifted a huge middle finger to all PS4 owners. The game is not better in gameplay by any means, however, it is much better in number of exploding particles. The PS4 just would not be able to handle such great blazing "gameplay".

    I called it a year ago (like everyone else) but sadly the society has not yet conformed to homosexual incestuous relationships in the past 14 months so instead the devs introduced a new character straight out of the blue to perform the "totally optional" kiss which is going to be totally canon in the next game.

    Horizon is trying so hard to be Mass Effect but only achieves to resemble The Last of Us Part II with its forced narrative and disconnection to previous instalments.    … Expand

    A boring and uninteresting plot, even more primitive than in the original game, the characters are not revealed, the dialogues are very simple, the feeling that the target audience is children under 10 years old. The gameplay has not received any changes. The add-on is not worth the money, it's a pity for the flow time. A strange game, it is not clear for whom it was made.

    Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is visually the best game I have ever played, and in terms of gameplay, it is enjoyable for me, although it may not be for everyone. But the story is the biggest weakness of the game, and I don’t think the story will be great in Someone’s opinion and it may just be the difference between those who say it’s mid and those who say it’s bad. But in different ways, this game completely shows off the power of the 9th generation console.

    Burning Shores is definitely worth a visit. The story builds nicely, the side quests have nice depth, and Aloy and Seyka may end up forming something more than just a friendship. The question is whether a little more content could have been added. After all, it's all stuff we've seen before. [Issue#327]
