As a fan of the series this is a truly disappointing release. As a fan of the series this is a truly disappointing release. I won't even talk about the current unplayable status due to the downed servers and the always online requirements **** happens, but **** wouldn't be so big if the game didn't require online) but the game has more fundamental problems that for me disqualify it from the legendary Gran Turismo legacy.

First and most important, for me, is the lack of a real career mode. This is what defined a Gran Turismo game for me and the café thing is definitely not a replacement.

Second, it lacks a lot of content. It has less cars, less tracks, and less races. It has no NASCAR and almost no rally. It has no real life karts (it has a ridiculously overpowered kart) or kart tracks.

Third, the microtransaction thing is awful. I don't care about microtransactions in games where they don't affect the flow of the normal game (like in Call of Duty games, for example) but in this game a lot of stuff is clearly designed to make you buy credits with real money, for example:

    - More than half of the cars are more than 100.000 credits and more than 10% are more than a million (WTF?). Some cars are 20 million! By comparison, the most expensive car in Gran Turismo 5 was 500k.
    - The awful "ticket lottery" system where most of the time you get the lowest price (5k, 10k, a random tuning piece which is usually even worth less and for some specific car). I have opened like 20 tickets and not on a single one I got a car or the biggest credit stack. Truly infuriating, specially when you are reminded that you can buy more credits with money after getting the ****ty price.
    - The nerfed payouts in tracks. This is aggravated by the lack of content, meaning you would be grinding the same 2-3 races that pay half-decently to get the cars you want (and as a bonus, it looks like they will nerf the payouts of the few races that pay well). In previous Gran Turismo games there was a grind to get money, of course, but you had a lot of content and variety so it didn't feel so.
    - You can't sell cars. A feature, mind you, they announced the game had.

The game has other problems, inherited from previous Gran Turismo games, but that in 2022 you could expect would have some improvements:

    - The AI is not really and AI but more like trains on a track. They almost never overtake among themselves and if you are in front of them they will totally wreck you. Poliphony has promised a new, better AI will come but it's not there right now.
    - The sound is pretty good for some cars but mostly bad for most of them, with the same old "angry vacuum cleaner" sound. Same for the skidding sound which is the same sound you had in GT1 so many years ago, and always the same sound for all cars and tires.
    - The UI is awful and lacks shortcuts. For example, you can tune your car before a race, you have to go several steps back to the world map, then go to the tuning shop and tune it there.
    - Split creen more has an horrible framerate.
    - Sport mode is basically broken right now.

On the positive side, the game looks beautiful (trough I would have expected more for a 2022 PS5 game, specially the lack raytracing during gameplay smells bad) and the handing of the cars seem to be good (at least the RX8, which is the same car I have in real life, have a very similar handing).

So, in summary, this game doesn't feel like a Gran Turismo numbered game but a lazy work over GT Sport with the cafe thing tacked in and nerfed payouts so you have to buy microtransactions.

Updating my review from a 1 (when the servers were down and all I could do was doing a couple of races in Arcade mode) to a 4 following the baffling nerf to the economy and the overall rise of car prices.

Beside the micro transactions which are scummy, and reducing race payouts, there is a good game in there somewhere .

Not really liking the campaign, but it is what it is, a racing game. Not much story to be had there anyways but they could’ve gone a little bolder in that direction. No crash damage physics is pretty lame for a racing sim. I gotta say when I hit a wall head on at 200 mile

Graphics are great although it’s really peaked at this point. Can’t admire too many details going 200 miles per hour. Framrate locked at 60fps is great. I want to love the game but it’s just so sterile. Yes the graphics are the best of any racing game on console at least, but it’s just kinda lifeless. I don’t know really how else to describe it.

Next is the dreaded and annoying cafe system, it's so needlessly intrusive with too much hand holding, and when you're done with it, that's it, that's the whole single player experience, there is a shockingly low number of actual races. Why the hell is there roulette tickets in my GT game? They've Forza Motorspoted this thing to hell. It's obvious they're pushing us towards the online portion of the game with the mandatory online funtion and dreaded MTX's, both of which have no place in a single player GT game, and now it's even worse since they gimped the payouts, and made it grindy like it's GTA online. The whole used car system is ridiculous, just make all the cars available, and what pencil pushing dido in marketing came up with Brand Central? It's disgusting and crass consumerism infiltrating our experience. This world is going to hell in a hand cart and those hand carts are all bought with MTX's. Expand

That being said, why would a GT fan give this game a 4/10 if the microtransactions aren't being taken into account? Sure, Gran Turismo 7 has the license tests, driving missions, classic original circuits (although reimagined), scapes, excellent replays, and general aesthetic we all come to love. It has some great new additions too like the in-depth car customization, livery editor, sport mode. Overall, on the surface, seems like a solid entry which is why I bought it. That's just on the surface and judged in a bubble though.

Well, it's been a solid 8-9 years since Gran Turismo 6 and a lot has changed in the racing game world. A lot of good competition has popped up and sim racing is a legitimate e-sport that has developed gamers into real life pro-drivers you can watch take to the track on the weekend. GT Sport and academy played a part in this, so good job there Polyphony. That's about as far as the praise goes for GT getting with the times though. Gran Turismo 7 has some serious core issues competitor games that are much older than it do not have. Project Cars, Assetto Corsa, Dirt, F1 for example.

The absolute biggest issue is the single player gameplay is very poor and dated hurting the whole game. I'm at menu book 18 right now about halfway through the game and I really don't like it at all. Every single race in the game is a rolling start where you are last on the grid, the lead cars start with a 20+ second advantage, and only have to complete about 90% the race distance you have to because when the game hands over the wheel to you the lead 3 fast cars are already a few corners ahead of you. Some tracks this even makes them skip very low speed corners entirely which gives them a massive advantage. This encourages you to use overpowered cars for the race which isn't fun at all and drive very aggressive sloppy races as you frantically push for the lead in 2-3 laps. There is no qualifying, no grid ordering by PP, no practice sessions, no way to play the tracks until you earn them in the menu book so you can't even practice/tune your cars on your own time. It's a very poor design decision no doubt about it. Gran Turismo has always set out to educate and develop you as a "driver" which is why GT academy and the world championships exist for the GT games. This environment does the complete opposite and honestly I bet the reason the online racing is so sloppy with all the ramming and hyper aggressive players is largely to blame on this poor design. How many of these players are learning how to play GT and learning bad habits from what's necessary to win in single player? This is the main reason the game gets a 4/10 from me because I doubt Polyphony will ever fix these issues. Single player is what it is, we will get new events I probably won't even ever do and that's about it. The races will stay in this stupid arcade style chase format, the ai will stay weak, and single player will stay uninteresting to me.

I want to excuse the lack of content, especially new content over GT Sport, but how can you? The majority of the stuff in GT7 as far as cars and tracks is just carried over from Sport and the new content barely seems like more than you'd get from an update that GT Sport got regularly. In time I'm sure the content will improve, so this doesn't bother me too much. The real world pricing concept for the cars is very stupid too. Most people can't/won't pay $250k+ for a 30 year old car that came out under $50k in real life, why would we want to emulate that aspect of being a car enthusiast in a game? There is absolutely no one I know of that likes how overpriced a lot of really not that great cars are that we like. I don't know what they were thinking here.

It's sad really, the core of this game is so brilliant but it's absolutely let down by laziness and stupid decisions by Polyphony. The cars feel great on my direct drive wheel and load cell pedals. The driving is fantastic, which is the most important part of a racing game really. The driving being good is the reason this game gets a 4 instead of a lower score. Everything else about this game is abysmal. The license tests is the only genuine fun I've had so far since it's just pure driving, no BS like the menu book. The always online means a day will come where you won't be able to play GT7 anymore as well. So going back to replay it 5, 10, 15 years from now won't be possible like with GT1-6. That also really hurts the appeal of this game for me too.

Verdict: If you're a massive GT fan, I still wouldn't recommend buying this game right now. I'd say wait it out a few months and see what the updates do. If you aren't a GT fan or car enthusiast, I'd say pass this game all together. Never thought I'd say this about a GT mainline game, but it's the truth. Peace.

The customization is also great, not only while customizing the performance of the cars but also their looks (as well as the driver´s look). It also looks amazing, Polyphony as usual surprises us with their amazing car models, tracks, weather effects and more! There are only over 400 cars in the game, but with the amount of detail and polish each one has it is acceptable, because the time required to make highly detailed cars in 3D is absurd.

    Negatives:

Unfortunately the AI of this game is not that good, they other cars don´t feel like other players but more like just bots. The story mode is different and it could´ve worked out, but it needs polish (at least for GT8).

    Ugly negatives:
The grind in this game is the worst kind of grind ever, because the rewards the game gives the player are very low compared to how high some of the car prices are. This is emphasized if you want to platinum the game, because to do that you have to spend 25.5M credits on 3 legendary cars that you will probably never use outside of photo mode or to try them out.
This also highlights another issue that is that said cars can only be purchased within limited windows of opportunity because of a new system used to purchase cars, which is that the used cars and the legendary cars are only available within a limited amount of time, but they are randomly swapped for other cars and god knows when the previous cars will be in stock again. In previous titles the used cars switched when the player won a race or a championship, so at least the player had some agency in that. This is of course is made so that in desperation of never getting the car you want you purchase overpriced credits with real money in hope of getting more revenue for the game. I also forgot to mention that some standard cars have "car invitations" for you to purchase within a limited window of time, which are not as bad as the used and legendary cars, but still worth mentioning.
And the killer design choice of this game is DRM (digital rights management) for a single player game, which is just insane. A player who bought this with their own U$S60 or got it with a gift should be able to play 100% of the single player content with no restrictions, but the DRM makes it so that the player is locked off 95% of it while they don´t have an internet connection. If the game was free or online only this wouldn´t be a problem, but as it is right now it pretty much is. I have had the game not giving me the rewards I deserved for a race or a license test multiple times because my internet connection is bad, and that is not acceptable. If Polyphony were to fix this then the game would still be a grind, but at least you´d be able to play it with just your PS5/PS4, a tv and electricity.

    Conclusion:

This game plays and it looks fantastic, the story could´ve used some work and the used/legendary cars scheme and DRM for single player should be fixed immediately.

This being said, 9 months too late and GT7 missed all the GOTY awards. It still has the worst soundtrack in the series (very budget), it still has RETARDED AI from year 1999 that will destroy your progress in difficult races by making you go off track and loose 10+ seconds. It still has that same, stupid 'coffee' career progress, it still has that MP like races in career (ex. there's no grouping by FF, FR, MR etc. as dominant but rather VERY restrictive manufacturer and PP races). 4/10 and RIP Gran Turismo

I've deleted my old review, but here's a warning:
Game career ends abruptly; it's short, lacks career maker races, endurance races and some cups in general. After that it'll force you to grind or use real money to level up (doing so by car collecting) which is even harder considering you can't sell them!

    Take it as a warning.

    Sony/Polyphony Digital need to fix:

    2) The ridiculous micro transactions. I'm not even sure calling it a 'micro' transaction is fair given how expensive the DLC cars end up with some costing $40 or more for a single car DLC.

Sony and Polyphony Digital were also extremely deceptive when it came to reviews as the game we're playing now is not the same as what reviewers were playing. The changes around progression and micro transactions were only introduced AFTER reviews were published and since you can only play the game online, you're forced to take those updates.

Gran Turismo is supposed to be a franchise that allows you to drive the high-end cars you'll never get to own in real life. No one bought this game so they can experience what it's like not to be able to afford the cars they want.

For anyone considering this title, I would highly recommend getting GT sport instead which can be found for a significantly cheaper price. It also has reasonably priced DLC vehicles should you wish to avoid grinding for credits. Graphically, I don't feel GT7 looks that much better and the ray tracing mode which offers the biggest visual improvement only works during cutscenes. The campaign is good, but not at the expense of being able to own the vehicles you want to drive.

At its core, there is a good game there and if it was free-to-play, I would understand why the game is the way it is. But as a full price $70 next-gen title from Sony, there is no excuse for the amount of grinding required to unlock vehicles or the ridiculous amount of real-world money you have to spend when you want to avoid that.

There is also no excuse for the game not being fully playable offline. As someone who strongly believes in game preservation, I put a lot of importance on what is shipped on the disc. Sony needs to patch the game to be fully playable offline, but even if they do, long term the game is doomed into non-existence.

I would strongly advise against buying this game until Sony resolves both of these issues.

In 2022, is a lot to ask for a game (paid full price) that let yoau play it as intended amd can be played everywhere and without internet? At least the single player component.

Let's add that, after 14 days since launch, the whole game (since online DRM) is down cause the servers are down (as now, for24 hours) since the latest patch broke something.
Tinfoil hat moment, they discover a bug to exploit in game economy and blocked the access to avoid losing on those MTX $$$

EDIT: moved vote from 8 to 2 and now to 0, I'm feeling mocked by the official statement release after patch 1.08, the way the took is absolutely wrong and adverse the playrrbase.

It’s a gt sport remastered by 70€. Low graphics and only you can see RT in repeat mode. Pathetic game.

Yep it drives slightly better than gts but it's a pale evolution.. nothing more than gts 1.5 ray tracing isnt even working properly on replays reflections look blurred when the framerate is stable enough (rare)... they probably should have focused on GI instead of reflections for a more next gen experience.. but that was probably off the table when sony in all their wisdom decided toYep it drives slightly better than gts but it's a pale evolution.. nothing more than gts 1.5 ray tracing isnt even working properly on replays reflections look blurred when the framerate is stable enough (rare)... they probably should have focused on GI instead of reflections for a more next gen experience.. but that was probably off the table when sony in all their wisdom decided to sacrifice their only driving game for the next 5 years to an attempt at cross gen profits.. if you're not bored of driving the same 10 year old cars on the exact same tracks (with additional transparent walls) you've had since 2017.. you get as a bonus an even worse ux, lose the fia licence and get super predatory mtx.. sony trying to kill the driving sim market it seems... Jogo irritante, fiquei mais tempo vendo história e dentro de um "café" do que jogando, e simplesmente parece que ao invés do carro correr é o cenário que corre, é Simplesmente BIZARRO, 300 reais jogados fora

The driving in this game is superb and while update 1.09 has resolved some of the issues (increasing the credits limit is a welcome change) , the game needs way more content. It's baffling how they don't just follow the successful formula of previous games before GT Sport. This whole new direction with focus on artwork and limited content is regression, not progress. Love the game, just not the fact it works out about £160 in microtransactions to buy a the most expensive car, Sony didn't even include the microtransactions in the version for the media to review and added it afterwards. It will literally take forever to build up your garage unless you pay hundreds of pounds to buy credits. Yet again Sony and polyphony dig

Requires internet connection to even play single player (probably to control their microtransaction currency). Server has been down for over 30 hours, not allowing me to even play my own game on my day off.
Also it is pretty "grindy", hard to earn money, trying to force players into microtransactions

The driving is absolutely superb. Licenses are way too easy in the beginning, but later on are a nice challenge. I appreciate the love for cars that went into the game with its detailed display of car history. The variety of cars is also pretty good in my opinion.

So let‘s get to the negative: 1. Always-on mechanic in a Single Player game. We saw what happened when the server went down,

So let‘s get to the negative: 1. Always-on mechanic in a Single Player game. We saw what happened when the server went down, the game is then basically useless. What will happen to the game once the servers will be shut down sometime in the future?
    2. Microtransactions: What on earth were they thinking here? First of all: there should be no microtransactions at all in a game like this. But when you implement make them at least reasonable and not as greedy as herr. They intentionally reduced the price money for races. These are the reasons why I can‘t rate it higher than 4 even thiugh K enjoyed the game itself.

It is only the cherry on top that GT7 is offline for over a day without any info at all as to why and for how long. Give me a GT6 remaster any day over this hollow mess that GT7 claims to be. At least it had solid soundtracks in the past and some bare minimum of classic racetracks which we all know and love. Ingame economy is a joke, everything was designed to pressure you into buying very expensive credits. Took more than a few pages out of EAs book. First party developer, wow. Fan since GT1 peacing out. Turn this around very very quick or fade into obscurity in the future. Happened to bigger franchises in the past. Expand

This game is an 8 for me, finally GT with singleplayer again (dint like Sport), but it gets a -4 because of the microtransactions.

Gran Turismo 7 has a lot of good and plenty of great. The use of DualSense and the particularly well-tuned loading is exemplary, and there's a huge amount of work behind the game, with a lot of detail that's almost hard to believe at times. [Issue#318]

Gran Turismo 7 brings to the tracks every single thing fans always wanted: the GT Mode everyone loves, plenty of customization options, car loads, classic scenarios and one of the best DualSense and 3D Audio experiences the PS5 has to offer. This is the best Gran Turismo experience we have ever seen in a long time.

Gran Turismo 7 is a love letter to motorsport history and an impeccable technical showcase. The franchise's traditional formula gets good improvements, but it's still extremely true to its roots. One of the best racing series ever shines spectacularly on the PS5.
