I'll break down why I give this game a 4.

Graphics - There is a video in the wild that is gaining popularity comparing this game with Arkham Knight. It's pretty clear that the game from 7 years ago is graphically superior, which is odd. Beside the much ballyhooed lack of 60 FPS in a current generation game, there are a lot of quirks in the game's physics engine whose oversight is baffling. Red Hood's hoodie drawstrings famously stick straight out at a 90 degree angle, Batgirl's cape hangs limply over one shoulder while she blasts down the road on the Batcycle, etc. You can't put out tripe like this and then also throw a $70 price tag on it. Further, Gotham City itself is devoid of almost all life. Civilians exist but you will likely only see 3-4 at a time, if that.

Controls - I've been playing video games for just over 40 years now, and I can say that Gotham Knights' controls are some of the worst I've encountered. There's no way to lock onto enemies so you often end up attacking randomly. The camera gets stuck on objects so you end up attacking nothing. Your character will come to a full sudden stop if they come close to any object higher than their foot. Interacting with objects like computers or boxes requires that you be in a precise range and face the object square on, otherwise you only see that you can interact with the object but not do anything with it (despite the fact that it is only six inches to your left). You are often left traveling around using the grapple gun, and the game has almost no logic as to where you will fire. Want to go straight up? Maybe you can, maybe not. Want to jump across the street towards an objective? Maybe you fire backwards or straight up instead. Extremely frustrating.

Game play - The basic game play loop is just that...basic. Light and heavy melee, light and heavy ranged attacks, and a dodge. That's it. No parry, no cool gadgets beyond your chosen characters' ranged weapon. You can grab enemies once you've weakened them for some strikes or a throw which does no damage on its own. You have "Momentum" moves that let you use new attacks, but are fairly useless as they often only delete one or two enemies. The gear system is nice for the character customization, but other than that, it is just another chore. Travel is done via either the aforementioned grapple gun, which is terrible, or by Batcycle, which is nearly as bad. You can run over the few citizens you see with no consequence. Hitting a wall or another vehicle has no consequence other than bringing you to a sudden halt. The Batcycle is what I would expect to see in a $5 shovelware title, not an alleged AAA game. There a lot of "challenges" to finish but they are virtually all the same thing. There are collectibles as well, but between how numerous they are, how lifeless the city is, and how bland the gameplay is, I don't know how anyone can stomach collecting them all.

All in all, this one is a huge disappointment. There are a LOT of QOL improvements that could be made to maybe get this one another point, maybe two, but at its core, Gotham Knights is just not a good game. I don't know that I can recommend it even when it inevitably goes on sale.

It’s as average as it gets and that’s a tragedy since the Arkham series was so great. Pass. Expand

Unoptimized mess promoting the "woke" agenda.

What could have been a good game is, once more, overshadowed by poor optimization, clunky controls, grindy missions, and an unhealthy dose of "wokeness". On PC: There is no true Full-screen mode. What could have been a good game is, once more, overshadowed by poor optimization, clunky controls, grindy missions, and an unhealthy dose of "wokeness".

On PC: There is no true Full-screen mode. No matter the settings, the game fluctuates heavily between 20 and 140 FPS. I'd rather it's a stable 30 than getting a headache from these sudden fluctuations dipping to 20, then rising to 100 with a simple camera turn. Graphics are mediocre at best without RayTracing on. Reminds me of old PS3 games (e.g., Infamous: Second Son). If you turn RT "on" the game is a stutter-fest (RTX3080Ti, R9 5900X).
On PS5: You are locked at 30 FPS. Enough said.

Side missions while on patrol become a big chore after the second time. It's always the same setup of enemies and things to do. Same locations. Same tactics. Same objectives. It gets old very quick.

Combat doesn't help either. It gets monotonous very fast. Other than the nice finishers, there is not much to comment on. It's clunky and doesn't feel fluid. It's just spam "X" until the enemy sponge dies. You even forget that you have a ranged move (range is so short it doesn't matter anyway).

Traveling also feels like a big chore:
    - The bat-bike mechanics are out of a game released in the early 2000s. Physics are entirely off. To make the world feel "big," they tweaked the bike to go at 40Kmh, while simulating a "wind" effect around the edges of the screen so as to appear that you are going at 350Kmh. The scam is visible as you can barely overtake a bus. Getting anywhere is so sluggish and boring.
    - The hook that you grapple is hit-n-miss. You can use it on specified spots in the world which becomes very annoying when it auto-targets at a place that you are clearly not aiming at. Still, this is probably the only decent way to move around.
    - Gliding/flying is even slower than the bat-bike, which makes it a joke. It also forces your short cape to turn long, which is very ugly.
    - Navigating on foot is weird. There is no jump button and you can only move on objects that the game wants you to.

Customization is pure marketing. They allow you to craft suits, yet it's basically just 6 different models that simply recycle their stats each time you craft them. You have the option to change the look of some body parts (hands, boots, mask) between 3 options that are so similar you won't even notice. it's there just to promote "character customization". At least you can change colors, if you manage to unlock them before finishing the story. If you unlock the glide ability the game forces on you long capes. There is no option to change them and this has already been an issue on Reddit as people are frustrated not being able to revert it back. Many consider not even unlocking the glide ability to avoid the long cape.

To top it off, instead of spending time polishing and serving us a finished product, they decided to spent time injecting their "woke" propaganda in the game. It has it all. "Pride" parades and rainbow flags. There are text-messages between the characters in the context of: "Omg the Pride parade is in town. We are bad people if we don't go. We are OBVIOUSLY GOING!!" Paraphilia is being promoted plenty once more. Your politics have no place in our games.

Overall: The game needs serious patching to optimize it. If it is stable it might be worth half the asking price (~30$). Since nothing else will change (e.g., combat/driving won't change) I can't recommend this unless you get it at 20$-max in a few months if you REALLY want it. By then, it will hopefully be stable and run at AT LEAST 60 FPS.

That’s not even to say about the tacked on leveling and crafting system. It feels very obvious they were just trying to pad out the game. Other poor decisions were the absence of any local multiplayer and making single player less fun to play. When you die you still have to have a count down for no reason waiting to be revived by an nonexistent party member.

This game feels like it was trying to do the Arkham series without doing anything Arkham was known for stripping it of perfected mechanics. Like the gliding and grappnel that felt smooth is replaced with jerky jumps and grapples that stop you dead each time , stealth has been all but cut with previously stated imprecise landings, overly long stealth take downs, no gadgets, poor hiding, and enemies that can’t even be taken down stealthily or not which makes the whole thing moot.

All in all a poor showing especially for a game with so much potential and a previous legacy that had already perfected it. I’d say don’t waste your money and just replay Arkham City with mods. You get something a bit new and you don’t have to pay $70.

The combat was fluid, and the character progression and storytelling was well paced. The city actually felt ALIVE! In Gotham Knights, the city feels dead and hollow. The combat is clunky, repetitive and not intuitive whatsoever. Basic skills which are available straight out of the gate in Arkham Knight are locked behind skills which require skill points in Gotham Knights. The side missions are basic and all of them feel lazily scripted and very copy paste with little to no variation between the similar types (I did two investigation scenes back to back and they were the exact same clues and setup for both). There isn't very much incentive to switch between characters, as they all play basically the same with very slight variances (you can cape glide with Batgirl but not with anyone else, you can stealth takedown enemies from Gargoyles as Robin but not as anyone else). The voice acting gets annoying very quickly, as there only appears to be a small selection of recordings for each character when you're out exploring. The concept of this game was very promising, and had they spent more time on developing the individual characters, their skills and move set, it could have been a really fun game to play. Instead, it feels like they've taken a giant step backwards in the franchise.

The driving on the Batcycle is also horrendous. It doesn't give any sensation of speed, it handles like something from a late 90s Sega game and the character animations when you're driving are non -existent. It may as well be a large piece of ham on the bike with the throttle taped open.

Overall, I don't believe this is a AAA title worthy of a $90 price tag. It feels and plays more like a made-for-mobile game. Maybe it's more fun in multiplayer but I gave up on the game before giving that a chance. With a campaign that's just over 10 hours, I'd say wait until this comes out free as a PS Plus title.

Not being content with being one of the most soulless products released under the Warner Bros. label, it is also extremely underwhelming from a technical point of view. Gotham Knights was originally developed as a multi-gen title, but PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions got cancelled. Despite this, the visuals underwhelm and fail to impress and manage to look worse than the last major Batman instalment released seven years prior. Capping at a mere 30fps might be excusable if this boasted the most cutting edge visuals on the market, but it manages to look cheap and dated. For a AAA production from Warner Bros., this should have been a visual tour de force, with top writing talent, and have evolved the gameplay to compete with its contemporaries. Maybe it can be salvaged over time with updates, but currently it's one of the most droll and sloppily designed triple-A products of 2022.

Gotham Knights would be a great game, its sandbox approach to exploring Gotham is top-notch and its story keeps you just engaged enough to keep playing. The problem lies in the game’s lackluster combat and endless fighting cycles of beating up the same factions over and over and over with little to no variation to dialogue.
