This game does a lot of things very well but it's ultimately a little bit disappointing for me. Or perhaps it shouldn't have been an open world at all. The combat is fun with cool abilities but more could have been done in that department, particularly with boss fights. Visually and atmospherically I think it delivers. Some of the side content feels half-baked. There's too much grind here if you want to go for a completionist run, which I gave up on. Story is interesting and I like how they weave in Japanese mythological lore. Expand

I had alot of fun with this one. The open world did get repetitive after awhile but it had alot of heart and some really awesome animations for combat. Once you unlock all your spells the combat really becomes more engaging. Id recommend especially with the latest update adding more story

Spider-Man.

Looks good. Kind of boring. Not innovative in anyway. The last Bethesda game released for PlayStation is not the worst time you’ll have. The game’s start is a bit frustrating. The world though, is a colorful and detailed Tokyo that makes the Night City of “CyberPunk 2077” look dull. Too bad Ghostwire Tokyo has no life. Literally, the streets are empty.

The combat feels subpar. You can sneak attack and snipe enemies or attack them with gloat things while backpedaling. You could call this game “Backpedaling in Tokyo”. Bethesda once angain again proves they are not the masters of video game combat. The ideas are there. Your ghost powered protagonist has 3 different colors for attack and a block button for defense. Enemies need to be beaten down enough to expose their glowing hearts. Some need to be beaten down more than others. All of enemies follow the same a.i. programming: suicidally charge the protagonist.

Missions and side quests are a mixed bag. Sometimes you are fetching this or defeating waves of that. A rare side quest might have you sneak up on an animal spirit. Despite the paranormal premise of the game, you do pretty much what every game has you do. With different textures and more swinging, this could be Spider-Man Tokyo. Even the ghost vision is just a variant of the detective vision introduced in “Batman: Arkham Asylum” and copy pasted into dozens of games since.

Some games are better off as AA games and this is probably one of them. The gameplay here does not sustain a AAA length game. More isn’t always better, folks. Haven’t we players unlocked enough areas already? Haven’t we fetched enough things for enough NPCs? I do give the game credit for recycling good video games tropes. This is not a bad game. Maybe just lower the difficulty and stick to the main story quest. Full disclosure: I downloaded this game via PlayStation Plus Extra game catalog.

The way you can interact with doors, vendors (which r cute cats btw), dogs (that can find things for you), bins, telephone booths etc. The variety of weapons at your disposal. Enemy/combat animations look and feel (thanks to the dual sense controller) great. The map and clothing/music options are simple and well-executed. Finally, the automatic saving is a relieving and uncommon feature in games these days.

What could have been improved: combat and enemy variety are a little repetitive and I wish there was a dash button. The parrying could have been more satisfying/refined. Also, the game asks you to collect 211,000 souls. It's a pretty absurd number, and something that is not rewarding. I also wish we could wield swords.

Conclusion: There is a lot to like about this creepy, unique, beautiful world. While the combat and music do not stand out as being exceptional, everything else: from the graphics, to the trippy indoor moments, to the japanese culture/lore to the enemy designs and the sound design/voice acting are great. I think gameranx's review of the game perfectly sums up my view. a good game not a great due to the repetitive nature and lack of activities to do in the world. a sequel has a lot of potential. It's probably worth mentioning upfront that if you're not remotely interested in Japan, its culture or folklore then your enjoyment of this game will probably be significantly lessened as, at its core, its just another open world checklist game.

90% of the side content is basically experiencing Japanese urban legends and the main missions usually amount to little more than 'go here and have a fight, watch cutscene'. In truth, I'd struggle to tell you why I enjoyed this game as much as I did, yet I happily floated all over Tokyo getting 100% completion, and I'd probably do it all over again.

What's here is far from perfect, but I would really love for this game to perform well enough for a sequel because I think there's a rough diamond here that deserves to be polished.

I have lived for many years not far from Shibuya, and have spent many years prior to that travelling to Tokyo. The one thing I wanted was a game to give me the open world experience of Tokyo. I can 100% guarantee that GhostWire gives a very specific feel for Shibuya... admittedly without people. Still, I loved exploring and searching. Even without people - which is a downer. The downsides are the mechanics - and for me, it was the controller mechanics - I would often press the right combination of buttons, but it would suddenly disconnect (the more I played, the more this was an issue). That could be a Sony thing, but if so, QA should have addressed it in their prep-phase. I know a lot of people are down on the lack of variety of foes - and that's fair... what i don't understand is why they hid a lot of different enemies behind random (side-quest) encounters. Just silly IMHO. The game is not hard, but I think some of the resourcing decisions (on ammo) are just wishful thinking - I never once found water (shot-gun) ammo to be that useful, yet there's a crap tonne of that compared to fire elemental ammo. I also wished they had some more different areas - I know how samey Tokyo can be, but the design decisions meant they were constrained to the most grey looking version. As I said - I loved it, but if you don't know the area you might be thinking this is a lot of the same.

Edit - I would also say that there are some Control-level cinematics here that are well worth the price of admission. The problem is - a lot of people bee-lined the game, and they didn't see as much as they should have. Also, it helps if you know your Japanese folk-lore.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So i came across this review to this game:

"Boring and repetitive combat, empty city which is uninteresting to explore, annoying platformer elements, waste of your time and money."

And I laughed. Let me pick this apart and add my two cents.

    "Boring and repetitive combat"?

All combat in every game gets repetitive after so many hours. It's simplistic if anything, but in no way a bad thing. You have three magic attacks, four types of talismans and a bow and arrow. Combat is smooth and works well.

"Empty city, which is uninteresting to explore"?

Not sure what this person means by this. The game world is modeled after the actual ward of Shibuya in Tokyo. The actual game word is more or less identical to the real place. If they mean empty as in no human NPC's, then they missed the point of the game considering everyone in the city has vanished. It's part of the story.

    "Annoying platformer elements"?

When? You can jump from rooftop to rooftop, but that's hardly platforming. There's no "pits" what you'd find in platformer games. Ignorant statement.

"Waste of your time and money"?

    Hardly.

Why did I give this game an 8?. It's very good game worth your time, for sure. But like all games, I did have my gripes with it at points. For one; too many collectibles; spirits, tanuki, investigation notes, voice logs, music, attire, Jizo statues, magatama. Sure, I 100%d the game, but sometimes too many collectibles can be a bit overwhelming. The good thing is, is that they're not TOO hard to find.

The ghost enemies that wear sheets. Worst enemies in the game by far. A huge hinderence a lot of the time.

Some side quests are a bit bland, some just being fetch quest, but every game suffers with these more or less.

No true replayability. For me, a story driven game like this is a kind of one and done kind of deal. For a long while anyway. Once you finish the game, there's is really no reason to instantly play it again like you would games like Resident Evil or Evil Within to unlock more gear. I may replay it again, but not for a long while, but with this big update coming, it may draw me back even sooner to see all the extra content.

Despite the mild cons, I found myself really enjoying this game. The story is great, the game itself not too long (You can probably finish it in about 5 hours if you just do the story without doing the side stuff).

Enemies have good designs, some of which are based on actual Japanese folklore. Sure, some are kind of re-skinned, but still look different from the other enemies in the same group. Again, most games do this, so that's forgivable.

Characters are good, none of which are annoying, though the banter with the two main characters can be a bit repetitive, but yet again, forgivable.

Overall great game and as it's now on PS+ and about to be put on Game Pass, you should definitely give this game a go. If you are interested in Japanese folklore and mythology, then this game is definitely for you.

Although from a combat point of view, the game is not surprising at all, but it is interesting to fight here. Only the collection of various information, notes, souls and any other things that are presented in the game can tire you. Basically what happened to me. The plot is not so long, but most of the time is spent not even on the very study and knowledge of Tokyo, but on the search for things. And that's the problem with open worlds. And Ghostwire Tokyo was no exception. Expand

Great graphics, great story, surprising plot twists I didn't see coming. The combat is so fun and addictive. The banter between the characters was great. I found myself doing all the side quests and finding collectables, which is a sure sign I genuinely enjoyed the game. Really loved Akito and his story. The end was surprisingly moving. Loved it!

Overall, I enjoyed the story and the gameplay and found this to be a great experience. However, the annoying fetch quests and time waster collectibles to fill in the game were ridiculous and you don’t get anything (besides the platinum trophy) for collecting all of the spirits so I took off points.

Surprisingly fantastic game. Mysterious atmosphere, Japanese culture, unique story and magic. The level up system, mission structure, etc. are common to most games like this currently, but this game is unique in its premise and execution. Got the game used from GameFly for $20 and well worth it so far. Truly enjoyable and better than expected.

Could have given it a 9 if ain't were for 500+ collectibles.

Pros 1. Very different kind of first person gameplay that kind of appealed to me 2. RT reflections on PS5 look surreal 3. You feel like a badass at the end with so much power at your disposal 4. Monster design is creepy and gives you an insight into Japanese folklore. My first showdown with Kuchisake was scarier than I imagined

    6. The game is quite easy to pick up and play.

    Cons
    1. TOO MANY COLLECTIBLES 2. Frame pacing issues in quality mode. Ultimately I had to settle for quality performance mode which limits resolution to 1080p with RT enabled as RT is must in this game.
    3. Screen tearing issues in some modes.

Super cool console exclusive that does a things little differently.

There was a little bloat -a lot of side missions but can't complain about that, makes the game the way it is. I feel like the story could have been a bit longer, in the end the last 2 chapters felt rushed. Overall I would recommend to play the game at least once. Spent the last few evenings playing through Ghostwire Tokyo (PS5). It was just okay. The city and the supernatural ambience are spectacular, especially playing on high frame rate quality mode. But the gameplay itself was so terribly boring that after 25 hours I couldn’t deal with the grindyness anymore and pushed through to finish the story.

By the credit roll, I had finished all the side missions, all the main missions, cleansed all the torii gates, and had collected over half of the (240,000!) souls. That was enough for me to consider the game complete.

Ghostwire Tokyo simply has far too many checklist collect-a-thons padding out the world. There’s the souls, torii gates, tanuki, Jizo statues, yokai, relics, prayer beads, audio tracks, voice recordings, landmarks, clothing and outfits… It reminded me of the bloated mess the pre-Origins Assassins Creed games had become (looking at you, Assassins Creed Syndicate).

If combat wasn’t so one note, it might have been able to carry the weight of the padded open world. Unfortunately, every single fight, from the first hour to the last, is the same fire-backpedal-circle-strafe-until-everything-is-dead formula. Even the bosses play out this exact same way, except for one which prioritized a stealthy approach.

And then there's the performance issues, which persist to this day. Unstable frame rates regardless of which of the graphical modes you choose, frame drops, input lag, screen tearing (even with the vsync mode enabled)...

Glad I picked it up on sale. Anyone giving this a 9 or a 10 is delusional. 75% of the world is meaningless collect-a-thon fluff and is the kind of padded nonsense that forced Ubisoft to completely retool their Assassins Creed franchise. It's a relic of last generation game design.

This is not that. This is a game that screams troubled development and a divided creative team. The game seems to be stuck between being a fast paced doom style fps, a gritty detective thriller and a traditional survival horror. It does these things competently but by trying to combine all these different elements it comes out a little hollow.

For example in combat there is a lot of Bullet Hell style projectiles flying at you yet you arent equipped with a dash or double jump so combat feels alot less fun and fast paced then it could have. Their are also only really 4 main upgradeable weapons and you get the fourth and final one not that far into the game making the game play loop a little more boring and uninteresting because of the lack of variety even if the visuals and animations are great. The game is completely bloodless too which makes the combat less punchy and satisfying because you're essentially just fighting semi tangible ghosts and i wish they could have somehow added some cool gore effects when using spells on ghosts. The game has a grapple move which i was initially thrilled with but it's honestly pretty limited and even if you gain the ability to grapple where you want, it's not really "anywhere" just predetermined spots and not to the kind of scale that a Arkham game would have. These undercooked elements scream of rushed deadline or late edition because i could absolutely see the traversal mechancis being loads of fun if the game had more time and focus.

On the Detective Thriller side of things a few of the side missions where you go into a building and talk to a ghost and help them move on are legitimately fun and interesting distractions. However, there are so many of these side missions that alot of them feel copy and pasted to fill out a map and i really think the game would have faired better with less but higher quality and original side missions. Investigations are okay with typical trailing style missions but the game would have benefitted with more interesting dialouge choices and ways to interact with the enviroment, maybe a Resident Evil style examine and inspect option could have helped make you feel way more like a detective prowling a crime scene.

On the Horror front, which i and many others initially believed the game to be, the game is a mixed bag. The monster design is great and wholly original in alot of ways and the inclusion of Yoki is also welcomed although i feel like their presence should have been more prominent. Despite these great designs however the game is never scary which would be okay because they are going for
something else, but the game is also not really that tense because of the plentiful resources and KK's commentary.

Although i've been bashing this game so far i do actually enjoy it. The combat isn't as good as it could have been but it's still really solid. The game has alot of charm and the world is interesting to explore even if some of the samey looking city locations get a little tiresome near the end. The sound design and animations are great and overall these elements did keep me hooked throughout the entire game. Another strength of this game is just how unique it is, the last big budget game with this level of unique style was probably Death Stranding, and although that game turned out better imo, it's still commendable that this got made.

Overall, i do not think this game is worth the money full price. It's just a little too scattershot for me to confidently say that i would recommend someone buy it right now. As soon as there is a price drop or sale then i honestly would recommend giving it ago, you might like it or hate it or somewhere in between but you definitely won't regret playing it and seeing what it's all about.

It had arrows and talisman which could help you during combat but the elements (wind, fire, water) are the star of the game and it was meh. The world of the game felt very empty for me, like there is not much to do and the exploration side was the same in every other area, there's nothing much to interact with, the only thing you could do in new areas is to collect spirits and complete side missions, and the side missions were not that interesting to begin with (some are interesting but mostly are not). I wouldn't recommend it at full price, I'd say go for it when it's on sale because it's honestly not worth it at all at full price. Overall, it was average at best for me. Expand

If you push through the story and ignore the side content the game is already short. Now there is nothing wrong with a short game if the price point is right - as a matter of fact the game would have benefitted from being a shorter/smaller open world experience as well. This way it wouldn't allow itself to become repetitive.
I expected a horror experience set in Tokyo (more suspense/thriller than jumpscares) and what I got was not at all what I expected. Once I got over the disappointment I grew to like it some. 6/10 - above average game but not much else.

Best game I have ever played. An extraordinary story and extremely catchy gameplay that will keep you stuck to your console. Absolutely fun and mesmerizing - and that is coming from someone who has played over 100 Playstation games.

This game reminds me of The Yakuza Series in so many ways. The side missions, the whacky feeling in some funny situations, the dialog that resembles the conversation between the gang in Yakuza 7. The art design makes me feel like I'm replaying the original Judgement. It's pretty awesome that it resembles it but stays true to its creepypasta roots. Although it's easy enough to play it without being scared, there are some monsters, such as The Lady in Red that truly creeped out. I can't say so much for the main story though. It seems very basic and it doesn't quite explore anything relevant. Just plain old saving my sister. Gameplay is phenomenal, intuitive and always blows me away. I would highly recommend. Expand

Another great game from Bethesda, action packed with maybe things to do or interact with, it's kinda reminding me mix of Dishonored and Far Cry.

    Initial thoughts-
Not a lot of replay value. The controls feel sluggish on a controler. Raytracing images look nice for when you enter a haunted house and the developers want to show you a psychedelic light show. Gameplay-
The concept of a mystic- first person shooter is neat though there are only 3 diffirent types of "guns" to use with little in the way of variety. There are times

The concept of a mystic- first person shooter is neat though there are only 3 diffirent types of "guns" to use with little in the way of variety. There are times that jumping in the game is unresponsive to when I push the button which makes platforming levels a pain.
By the end of the game the enemies are repeated ad nauseum and they turn into bullet sponges as the game progresses rather than use new moves to increase the difficulty. Story-
The story and character motivations are mostly back-loaded to the final chapter to where the final chapter feels like a movie that the developers wanted to show with the most story at the end so that it would be the last thing you may remember about the game and not that the middle portion was lacking in character progression comparatively. There are also some action events that take place in cutscenes such as driving a motorcycle that would have been fun to play instead of just watching the characters in a cutscene. Overall I would wait to pick up this game until it becomes $30 as once completing it you will not likely feel the need to revisit the game.

Not sure why this game gets so much negativity. There are no control issues on the PS5, and it runs extremely well. Gameplay is helped by an absolutely gorgeous Tokyo backdrop, which has obviously been lovingly created. There's plenty to do for Completionists like me, and travelling round to see the sights is easy enough. i'ts an 8 mostly because of repetetive enemies, but its still aNot sure why this game gets so much negativity. This game far exceeded my expectations. It's a fun take on a first person perspective game using different magical abilities. Man, I really really enjoyed this game.
    Exploration was fun.
    Combat was fun.
The story was better than expected.
The music and atmosphere were fantastic.

Also, Akito and KK, if you watch/read Jujutsu Kaisen, you will love their bond.

One's feelings about the game start with "oh my God, what did I buy", move on to "hey, it's not all bad - let's destroy one more tree", only to realize in the end that you're actually doing the same thing over and over again and that you could spend your time in a more entertaining way. Ghostwire: Tokyo is an interesting new mix of horror 'shooter' with excellent enemy design and aesthetics, but relies strongly on its eastern thematic to stay interesting past a certain playtime. However, despite the repetition, it does it's best to offer enough to keep players invested and interested enough with its variety and story, especially if you have even a slight interest in Japan or its vast mythology.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a memorable journey that never overstays its welcome. With a unique combat system and plenty of options for exploration, it makes an admirable effort to keep players engaged even after the credits roll.
