Decent enough love the mechanics, story’s predictable and the game’s boring when you’ve finished it.

I think the devs did a great job with the world design and the overall supernatural atmosphere of the game. Combat can get a bit tedious and repetitive and you'll find yourself dealing with enemies the same way alot of the times. I dont mind it though. The game isn't great but it's not a bad game either. Also it does have english audio but by default the game starts in Japanese with English subtitles and I would highly recommend keeping it that way. Makes the dialogue and environment seem a bit more authentic and immersive. Overall I feel this is a "wait for a sale" type of game if you're interested but dont have the 60-70 dollars to spare. It's the same boring, run-of-the-mill open world stuff. At least it has some japanese stuff instead of ubisoft towers, but the story is so uninspired that even the nice visuals look bland after a while.

The devs said they made Ghostwire as a love letter to Japan, and it shows: rather than trying to throw constant unease at you in the semi-open world the way Evil Within 2 did, the game immerses you in a modern Shibuya steeped in general national folklore. It does fanservice to the cityscape in a way that is second only to Yakuza, and the game can basically be boiled down to Yakuza-meets-Shin Megami Tensei by way of a first-person horror game. Similar to another game, Control, Ghostwire also levels out the spookiness in order to just sort of let you get lost in exploring the paranormal on a nearly procedural basis. However, with all this out of the way, it's worth noting that the game is fairly short, the collectibles are hit-or-miss by some standards – thus lacking in replayability for some – the story is not particularly strong, and the combat can err on the simplistic and repetitive side, and the roughly 20+ hour playtime may not be for everybody

Solid game, but may be worth borrowing or waiting for a deep sale

Expand

Not really understanding the 10s as this game is actually worse than a Ubisoft open world.

Interaction? Forget it. Think Division with nobody to talk to and endless empty streets.
Innovation? Nope unless you think doing the same thing repeatedly thousands of times is innovative. They didn't even try to mix it up so your options when it comes to what passes as combat are very limited.

5 for graphics and outdoing Ubisoft and minus 5 for everything else.

It really feels like the trailer we saw at E3 in 2019 (remember they showed people vanishing and leaving behind their clothes) was all they actually had as a premise and based on the response they got to making a game around it because it doesn't look like they had anything aside from a trailer. You'll notice that as you play.

Also don't expect to finish this game expecting to be told why certain things you do had to be done because they don't even explain why you are the only person to keep your mind in your body.

Also don't expect a horror game. This is more whimsical and whacky slapstick horror hence the rating.

And the outright 10s for this game must be people who have never played an open world game or they are just kids because at most this deserves a 5. Trust me the only way this game is going to win a game of the year award is if the developers and publishers of other games just vanish into a void very much like the people in this game and nothing else is released this year!

But the gameplay itself was so terribly boring that after 25 hours I couldn’t deal with the grindyness anymore and pushed through to finish the story.

By the credit roll, I had finished all the side missions, all the main missions, cleansed all the torii gates, and had collected over half of the (240,000!) souls. That was enough for me to consider the game complete.

Ghostwire Tokyo simply has far too many checklist collect-a-thons padding out the world. There’s the souls, torii gates, tanuki, Jizo statues, yokai, relics, prayer beads, audio tracks, voice recordings, landmarks, clothing and outfits… It reminded me of the bloated mess the pre-Origins Assassins Creed games had become (looking at you, Assassins Creed Syndicate).

If combat wasn’t so one note, it might have been able to carry the weight of the padded open world. Unfortunately, every single fight, from the first hour to the last, is the same fire-backpedal-circle-strafe-until-everything-is-dead formula. Even the bosses play out this exact same way, except for one which prioritized a stealthy approach.

And then there's the performance issues, which persist to this day. Unstable frame rates regardless of which of the graphical modes you choose, frame drops, input lag, screen tearing (even with the vsync mode enabled)...

Glad I picked it up on sale. Anyone giving this a 9 or a 10 is delusional. 75% of the world is meaningless collect-a-thon fluff and is the kind of padded nonsense that forced Ubisoft to completely retool their Assassins Creed franchise. It's a relic of last generation game design.

The worst part of the game is the battle system gameplay. At first it feels unique and fresh, but gets old and painfully repetitive extremely fast. It becomes nothing but a chore.

The world though, is a colorful and detailed Tokyo that makes the Night City of “CyberPunk 2077” look dull. Too bad Ghostwire Tokyo has no life. Literally, the streets are empty.

The combat feels subpar. You can sneak attack and snipe enemies or attack them with gloat things while backpedaling. You could call this game “Backpedaling in Tokyo”. Bethesda once angain again proves they are not the masters of video game combat. The ideas are there. Your ghost powered protagonist has 3 different colors for attack and a block button for defense. Enemies need to be beaten down enough to expose their glowing hearts. Some need to be beaten down more than others. All of enemies follow the same a.i. programming: suicidally charge the protagonist.

Missions and side quests are a mixed bag. Sometimes you are fetching this or defeating waves of that. A rare side quest might have you sneak up on an animal spirit. Despite the paranormal premise of the game, you do pretty much what every game has you do. With different textures and more swinging, this could be Spider-Man Tokyo. Even the ghost vision is just a variant of the detective vision introduced in “Batman: Arkham Asylum” and copy pasted into dozens of games since.

Some games are better off as AA games and this is probably one of them. The gameplay here does not sustain a AAA length game. More isn’t always better, folks. Haven’t we players unlocked enough areas already? Haven’t we fetched enough things for enough NPCs? I do give the game credit for recycling good video games tropes. This is not a bad game. Maybe just lower the difficulty and stick to the main story quest. Full disclosure: I downloaded this game via PlayStation Plus Extra game catalog.

A solid game with great exploration, a very fun design and tone, that can go from a relaxing jaunt down backstreets, hunting for tanuki, gathering lost souls, or just exploring, to intense fights against genuinely unsettling foes. Combat gets a bit repetitive though, and some elements just do not work as intended. Definitely worth a buy if on sale, or if you're curious though.

If you push through the story and ignore the side content the game is already short. Now there is nothing wrong with a short game if the price point is right - as a matter of fact the game would have benefitted from being a shorter/smaller open world experience as well. This way it wouldn't allow itself to become repetitive.
I expected a horror experience set in Tokyo (more suspense/thriller than jumpscares) and what I got was not at all what I expected. Once I got over the disappointment I grew to like it some. 6/10 - above average game but not much else.

This is not that. This is a game that screams troubled development and a divided creative team. The game seems to be stuck between being a fast paced doom style fps, a gritty detective thriller and a traditional survival horror. It does these things competently but by trying to combine all these different elements it comes out a little hollow.

For example in combat there is a lot of Bullet Hell style projectiles flying at you yet you arent equipped with a dash or double jump so combat feels alot less fun and fast paced then it could have. Their are also only really 4 main upgradeable weapons and you get the fourth and final one not that far into the game making the game play loop a little more boring and uninteresting because of the lack of variety even if the visuals and animations are great. The game is completely bloodless too which makes the combat less punchy and satisfying because you're essentially just fighting semi tangible ghosts and i wish they could have somehow added some cool gore effects when using spells on ghosts. The game has a grapple move which i was initially thrilled with but it's honestly pretty limited and even if you gain the ability to grapple where you want, it's not really "anywhere" just predetermined spots and not to the kind of scale that a Arkham game would have. These undercooked elements scream of rushed deadline or late edition because i could absolutely see the traversal mechancis being loads of fun if the game had more time and focus.

On the Detective Thriller side of things a few of the side missions where you go into a building and talk to a ghost and help them move on are legitimately fun and interesting distractions. However, there are so many of these side missions that alot of them feel copy and pasted to fill out a map and i really think the game would have faired better with less but higher quality and original side missions. Investigations are okay with typical trailing style missions but the game would have benefitted with more interesting dialouge choices and ways to interact with the enviroment, maybe a Resident Evil style examine and inspect option could have helped make you feel way more like a detective prowling a crime scene.

On the Horror front, which i and many others initially believed the game to be, the game is a mixed bag. The monster design is great and wholly original in alot of ways and the inclusion of Yoki is also welcomed although i feel like their presence should have been more prominent. Despite these great designs however the game is never scary which would be okay because they are going for
something else, but the game is also not really that tense because of the plentiful resources and KK's commentary.

Although i've been bashing this game so far i do actually enjoy it. The combat isn't as good as it could have been but it's still really solid. The game has alot of charm and the world is interesting to explore even if some of the samey looking city locations get a little tiresome near the end. The sound design and animations are great and overall these elements did keep me hooked throughout the entire game. Another strength of this game is just how unique it is, the last big budget game with this level of unique style was probably Death Stranding, and although that game turned out better imo, it's still commendable that this got made.

Overall, i do not think this game is worth the money full price. It's just a little too scattershot for me to confidently say that i would recommend someone buy it right now. As soon as there is a price drop or sale then i honestly would recommend giving it ago, you might like it or hate it or somewhere in between but you definitely won't regret playing it and seeing what it's all about.

By the end of the game the enemies are repeated ad nauseum and they turn into bullet sponges as the game progresses rather than use new moves to increase the difficulty. Story-
The story and character motivations are mostly back-loaded to the final chapter to where the final chapter feels like a movie that the developers wanted to show with the most story at the end so that it would be the last thing you may remember about the game and not that the middle portion was lacking in character progression comparatively. There are also some action events that take place in cutscenes such as driving a motorcycle that would have been fun to play instead of just watching the characters in a cutscene. Overall I would wait to pick up this game until it becomes $30 as once completing it you will not likely feel the need to revisit the game.

It had arrows and talisman which could help you during combat but the elements (wind, fire, water) are the star of the game and it was meh. The world of the game felt very empty for me, like there is not much to do and the exploration side was the same in every other area, there's nothing much to interact with, the only thing you could do in new areas is to collect spirits and complete side missions, and the side missions were not that interesting to begin with (some are interesting but mostly are not). I wouldn't recommend it at full price, I'd say go for it when it's on sale because it's honestly not worth it at all at full price. Overall, it was average at best for me. Expand

The good stuff: The graphics are superb on ps5. The story is intriguing and clear, and they waste no time. The Japanese voice acting is good. I like the mix of indoor and outdoor quests/fights. Interior decoration/design is detailed and realistic. Indoor missions are great and trippy or scary sometimes. The way you can interact with doors, vendors (which r cute cats btw), dogs (that can find things for you), bins, telephone booths etc. The variety of weapons at your disposal. Enemy/combat animations look and feel (thanks to the dual sense controller) great. The map and clothing/music options are simple and well-executed. Finally, the automatic saving is a relieving and uncommon feature in games these days.

What could have been improved: combat and enemy variety are a little repetitive and I wish there was a dash button. The parrying could have been more satisfying/refined. Also, the game asks you to collect 211,000 souls. It's a pretty absurd number, and something that is not rewarding. I also wish we could wield swords.

Conclusion: There is a lot to like about this creepy, unique, beautiful world. While the combat and music do not stand out as being exceptional, everything else: from the graphics, to the trippy indoor moments, to the japanese culture/lore to the enemy designs and the sound design/voice acting are great. I think gameranx's review of the game perfectly sums up my view. a good game not a great due to the repetitive nature and lack of activities to do in the world. a sequel has a lot of potential. I give the game 72/100

One's feelings about the game start with "oh my God, what did I buy", move on to "hey, it's not all bad - let's destroy one more tree", only to realize in the end that you're actually doing the same thing over and over again and that you could spend your time in a more entertaining way. Ghostwire: Tokyo is an interesting new mix of horror 'shooter' with excellent enemy design and aesthetics, but relies strongly on its eastern thematic to stay interesting past a certain playtime. However, despite the repetition, it does it's best to offer enough to keep players invested and interested enough with its variety and story, especially if you have even a slight interest in Japan or its vast mythology.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a memorable journey that never overstays its welcome. With a unique combat system and plenty of options for exploration, it makes an admirable effort to keep players engaged even after the credits roll.
