The videos are intrusive and present at every step (literally). The intensity of the videos is zero, since the graphics are not beautiful (definitely far from current gen graphics) the facial expressions of the characters are almost absent and leads you to immediately get bored.
The only thing I save is the plot, but can a plot be worth 80€? I don’t think so.
FFXVI is far from being as beautiful as the most famous previous chapters.

Aside from Final Fantasy XI, I have played through every main-numbered iteration in the series and more than a few spinoffs and sequels (including niche, weird ones that no one remembers like Final Fantasy Fables Chocobo Tales or Final Fantasy Explorers). Having just completed the main story literal hours ago, I can now safely say this is tied for my favorite game in the series with Final Fantasy XIV. That is, to say, that is not without flaws or odd points, but what makes the game strong outweighs them in my opinion. And also, I am not a paid critic and therefore have no real *need* for objectivity or impartiality when it comes to my own opinion.

But what I can say is that, as a longtime fan of the series having engaged with so much of its media to a point of near obsession, is that this game is unbashedly one of the best we've ever gotten, and it is one of the strongest, most cohesive stories in the entire series. If you truly engage with this game on its level and on its terms (read as: take the time to suspend enough disbelief to see the story through and do all the side quests), you are rewarded with a remarkably lively, complex, difficult world filled with tangible, realistic, heartbreaking characters that resonate so deeply and so emotionally that I often find myself in actual tears as I played through. I don't often cry while watching media, not in a way to seem "tough" or "masculine" but the reason is moreso that, while I may tear up and feel incredibly emotional, full-on tears is not the way the emotional resonance manifests for me. But to *actually* cry so much and so often from engaging with a single piece of media astounded me. The payoffs from actually doing the sidequests were so unexpected and great that it made even the boring ones worth it.

If you are on the fence about this game, or if you are a final fantasy fan unsure of the bold new direction this game takes, do not fret. Take heart and dive in. I promise that this is a Final Fantasy through and through.

My very first review of a game on Metacritic, I am a u40 gamer who loves FF franchises very much. Now with the pros
    - One of the best stories of the final fantasy franchise, has an good amount of drama, action, romance and on a good pace.
    - The soundtrack is AMAZING, specially on big fights
    - Visuals are beautiful, nothing that will change the games as it is, but it still really impressive.
    - Gameplay feels good, fast with a few variations of skills.
    - Hunts are cool, wish it was more of them.

Seriously, its a final fantasy like any other, really loved the action improvement related to 15 bloaty weapon system. Soundtrack is perfect, graphics are amazing and all this technology to present a good story.

Sad about it score tho, people are complaining that the game CBU3 showed its not what they had in mind

Honestly, I give it a 7, but to counter the zero score trolls I've bumped it up to a 9.

The game is a bit slow, dry dialogue at times, and an overuse of cutscenes, but later in the game it really picks up and the story gets a bit more personal. I enjoyed the 52 hours I got out of it and will likely play it again someday.

    - The graphics in general are worse than PS4 era games.
    - The sound mixing is TERRIBLE, with battles being 3x the volume of the out-of-combat world. This is through high end reference speakers and subwoofer. I’m a music producer, so I’m not ignorant when it comes to this.
    - The combat is generally too easy. You spam the square button and wait a minute for cooldowns.
    - Clive’s sword always clips through the sheathe, and they try to mitigate this by cutting to the front, so you can’t see him holster it in cutscenes.

This game by all measurable standards is a pile of unfinished garbage. 0/10 for sound mixing, 0/10 for combat, 0/10 for performance, 0/10 for side-quests, and a 0/10 for a derivative storyline that basically carbon copies The Witcher and GoT.

Final Fantasy XVI is not a good game. It is representative of a cynical, lowest-common-denominator approach to game development--the ultimate expression of flash over substance.

I've been playing FF games since the NES, and have enjoyed the development of the series over time. The recent action-hybrid system in FF7 Remake, for example, was a particularly good innovation that built upon the successes of the past. XVI, however, abandons the past in order to chase after an entirely different gaming audience. The developers have betrayed their own fanbase, cynically concluding both that their old fans will buy the game anyway, and the new audience will be bigger.

The problem is that XVI doesn't even succeed at what it is trying to be. As an action game it lacks combat depth, and it is very rudimentary and simplistic. Anything even slightly challenging would frustrate the so-called game journalists and lead to lower reviews, so players are treated to the most repetitive, basic combat available in any modern action game, paired with a complete absence of difficulty. The summon battles are even more unsophisticated, playing out like a two-button rail shooter. The very basic QTEs shoe-horned in throughout the game add to the sense that the developers have no new ideas.

In addition, the developers seem to have cottoned on to the idea that 'mature' means copy-pasting from Game of Thrones. After all, GoT is popular, just like action games. Sometimes, the blatant ripping off of GoT content is so ridiculous as to be laughable, but mostly it comes across as extraordinarily cringe-inducing. This would not be such a big deal if the game were not convinced that it is an HBO miniseries instead of a game. Be prepared to actually 'play' the game for only 15 minutes out of every hour spent with it. The cutscenes are continuous and relentless. But given how dreadful the combat is, perhaps the interminable cutscenes will be a welcome relief.

Pacing is simply awful, and the towns themselves are reduced to linear paths with NPCs along the side, to say nothing of the dungeons which are even less interesting. There are no places to explore, no treasures to be found in hidden areas, and the sidequests are creatively bankrupt, straight out of the WoW playbook. The storyline goes to pieces in the latter half of the game, and the final boss and conclusion are ridiculous and unfulfilling. The game adds a more challenging NG+ mode after completion, but it's hard to believe anyone would voluntarily play through it again after knowing that the latter portion of the game offers nothing.

The music and voice acting are both solid and even good in places. Neither is quite top-shelf but both are serviceable, let down by writing, pacing, and setting more than by execution. But these few bright points are obviously not enough to carry the game.

In the end, a lot of money spent on buying favourable impressions might lead to some people buying this game unaware of just what they're going to get. But, if they've any sense, they won't make that mistake twice: this game really will be their *Final* Fantasy.

Developed by Square Enix, this latest installment presents a unique blend of tradition and innovation, providing both long-time fans and newcomers an unforgettable journey into a mesmerizing fantasy world.

A Riveting Story of Politics, Betrayal, and Redemption:
Final Fantasy XVI introduces players to the land of Valisthea, a realm torn apart by conflicts fueled by political ambitions and the ever-looming threat of the Blight, a supernatural force devouring the land. The narrative revolves around Clive Rosfield, the young protagonist burdened by a curse and a tragic past, thrust into the center of this turmoil. The story's focus on complex political intrigue, betrayal, and the quest for redemption adds layers of depth to the overall experience, engaging players emotionally and intellectually throughout the game.

    Immersive Worldbuilding and Mesmerizing Visuals:
Valisthea, the world of Final Fantasy XVI, is a breathtakingly realized universe that seamlessly blends familiar elements from past games with its own unique flavor. Each region within the realm boasts stunning and distinct environments, from bustling cities to expansive wilderness, intricately designed to immerse players in the grandeur of this fantasy world. The attention to detail is exceptional, making exploration a joyous and awe-inspiring experience. Players control Clive and his companions in fast-paced, dynamic encounters against formidable foes, showcasing their unique abilities and the game's diverse range of combat styles. The system strikes a delicate balance, allowing players to utilize both reflexes and strategic thinking to overcome challenges, satisfying both fans of action RPGs and long-time Final Fantasy enthusiasts.

    Compelling Characters and Emotional Journeys:
One of Final Fantasy XVI's standout strengths lies in its memorable and well-developed characters. From Clive's internal struggle and his bond with his younger brother Joshua to the enigmatic Lady Jill Warrick and the charming rogue, Joshua's friend, Jill, each character is carefully crafted and layered, providing players with emotionally charged stories and motivations. The stellar voice acting and exceptional writing further enhance the authenticity of these characters, forging a deep connection between players and their in-game counterparts.

The Promise of a Grand and Enthralling Adventure:
With its compelling narrative, immersive world, and captivating characters, Final Fantasy XVI promises an epic adventure that will keep players engrossed for countless hours. The game beautifully combines the classic Final Fantasy elements that fans adore with fresh ideas and a darker tone, showcasing the evolution of the franchise. Square Enix's commitment to delivering a top-notch experience shines through every aspect of the game, from the meticulous attention to detail to the awe-inspiring musical score.

    Conclusion:
Final Fantasy XVI is a triumphant addition to the beloved franchise, offering an enthralling and emotionally resonant journey into a dark and vivid fantasy world. Square Enix's meticulous craftsmanship, coupled with its willingness to embrace new ideas, has resulted in a game that captivates players with its engrossing story, stunning visuals, and exhilarating gameplay. This latest installment reaffirms Final Fantasy's status as a leading force in the RPG genre and will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on both long-time fans and newcomers alike.

It's 1min gameplay then 10min cutscene. - a very very stop start game which feels more like a movie than an actual game. Also the enemies are just body sponges - there isn't really anything tactical in the fighting other than smashing buttons with OTT effects. The larger battles are set pieces that relie on QTE. The game has a lot less exploration and side quests are nothing more than repetitive fetch, kill, talk to quests. The graphics are nice but it feels more like walking down corridors to a slightly larger hub rather than freedom to go outside it's narrow path, though much later it opens up more but that's towards the end and still limited to where you are allowed to go, this kind of limits any real adventuring discovering and exploration. I have only ever played Final Fantasy XIV, and other entries in the series never interested me for personal playing, as great as I knew they were from watching playthroughs and through hearsay. None but XIV caught my heart, though. So, I gave this game a shot, because Final Fantasy veteran friends encouraged me too, and as well as the fact that I know Naoki Yoshida would never and has never let me down. He and his team delivered. The combat is amazing, with so much wonderful freedom to make it as easy or as difficult as you like. It is incredibly flashy, and incredibly fun. The game can be a cake-walk if you wish it, or it can be an incredible challenge. And I love that freedom immensely. Next is the worldbuilding, lorewise and visually. It blew me away, with a feature that let you constantly check lore relevant to cutscenes if you paused during them to catch yourself up. In addition, there are multiple other ways to constantly check on all of the lore and context of events. The world itself is wonderful, and the characters drew me in with ease, I came to love so many of them, and hate others as I should. They did well to create raw emotion in storytelling, and the voice actors’ went above and beyond. Visually, the attention to detail in this game will never stop blowing me away, I notice the tiniest details in every scene or every place I wander. And it all runs so smoothly, like a dream.

Story? It was a journey, an incredible one. I highly recommend it for that alone, even if combat doesn’t matter to you, the story is worth every penny. Do yourself a favor and avoid all spoilers, ride this journey from start to finish, you wont regret it. And I can't forget Masayoshi Soken for yet another masterclass of music to pair with it.

Overall, a 10, it deserves all the praise, because it is clearly a labor of love. There’s much more side features I didn’t even mention that alone will make me replay it again and again. I thank Square Enix for yet another amazing game, and hope to see more like this in the future.

TLDR: Amazing game, if you are a fan of action games similar to DMC, enjoy the intense emotions of Game of Thrones style, this would be a top tier game, highly recommend.

This is currently my game of the year, in this era of sequels and remakes, this does come as a completely fresh and new experience that has been sorely missed in many regards. This game gives a solid foundation of story building along with an easy way to access information in most cutscenes if you are ever wondering who or what is going in, even the world to lead to this moment.

The Action - Gameplay of this is stellar, the fighting feels very smooth, and each new ability unlock gives an excitement to try out and see if you want to change your full set to adapt this into your moves. Fighting is flashy, the stagger system adds element of strategy whether wish to pump out raw damage or stun enemies to dish it out, I found both viable but merely matters how you enjoy playing which is nice. The only complaint I have, is once you find your groove, it can be hard to mix it up, towards certain point I found -my- combo and everything extra never got used enough to find if viable, since the flow of combat was so smooth already.

The Story - From the beginning you find it wholesome enough, but it shows its fangs and sinks its dark gritty teeth in and refuses to let go. It is extremely well thought out, even sub quests lead to expanding the world and characters, but the world feels alive, once it catches you, you want to just keep going through. You'll have characters love, others absolutely despise, and death is not lightly here, if you know Game of Thrones, you'll know every character is at risk of departing too early.

Which can be a drawback, losing certain characters that added a mood that made it easier to deal with situations and brought humor or joy to even out those dark moments can be a hindrance. The story is solid up to about 75% way in, pacing does get little weird with certain motivations to feel for certain characters coming up short and not as climactic as feels it should have been. The good news is the ending does pay off well, feeling epic throughout as did previously and gives a satisfying conclusion.

Graphics - Per usual Final Fantasy games have amazing graphics, emotions can be easily read in cutscenes by facial expressions alone, the landscape is gorgeous, and many details are laid about to add to the world building, if know where to look. There are some moments in the sub quests where character interactions are bit lackluster, there is issues with running 60fps even on performance mode, and I experienced very few glitches in landscape, granted none of this felt bad to knock this, only to mention, but was plans to patch these issues in works already.

The Devs - I feel this is important to add in current sphere of gaming, compared to many other games that are triple A, the devs that were behind this game actually -care- about their players and the product they made. There is no microtransactions, no plans to milk us for profits or battlepass stuff, we get to experience a solid story, with solid gameplay.

As final summary, obviously this game is not the shining perfect beacon to end all be all, I would certainly change somethings, even in the story. However, this an amazing game for people wanting darker stories and feeling epic, letting you battle however you feel comfortable with plenty of options. That said, concerning this whole review bombing, I felt to add my own review as I know this game and the team behind it deserve better.
