While this game's visuals and technical quality carry over from the original, so do the original deficiencies. Not only does it flows over, but it's heightened here because this 4-6 hour add-on is a rip-off for the asking price of $20.

I made the argument with the original that Square Enix really wanted to turn the remake game into an interactive movie, and that's full-on display with Intermission. The actual game mechanics here in intermission are a redundant, pointless addition. Combat in ff7r, on the whole, is redundant. None of it adds anything to the package that Square Enix made here.

Controlling characters from one objective to the next could be reduced by half and instead be infused into narrative cutscenes, and nothing would be lost. Having Yuffie play Fort Condor against other people was boring and redundant and could have just been a narrative cutscene, and nothing would have been lost. Even the majority of exploring the Shinra HQ could have easily been filled in by having cutscenes, and nothing would have changed.

And that's the biggest problem with the project; so much of the game has a "Game" forced into a story-driven retelling. And it's here solely because if they had made this into an episodic interactive movie, the base would have flipped out. But instead of trying to make their vision into a game, they stubbornly went forward with their initial idea and jammed in a half-baked "Game."

Intermission suffers immensely from this hamfisting the stilted game mechanics from the base while reusing an absurd amount of assets and then charging you $20 for the privilege!

Does Yuffie's chapter add anything? Combat and game-wise? Nothing. Narratively? Plenty, but in the actual campaign and the ending scenes. But was that worth the cost you had to pay? Not even close. This should have been FREE for owners of the deluxe edition and at a maximum of $5 for everyone else. This chapter effectively turned a $60 game into an $80 game, and nothing about it warrants the cost.

This doesn't bode well for the series, as the rest will obviously have to follow suit (as this is a singular game). I wish Square would admit they really don't care about making video games and instead go ahead and start focusing on their real vision of user-controlled interactive movies. This middle-of-the-road approach hampers everything.

The game itself is great, but not worth releasing on its own for full price. The PS5 upgrade is free and the DLC is $20. I've often seen the PS4 version as low as $30, so this really shouldn't be more than $50. The new content is kinda minimal. Just some new cutscenes with the crew and pretty much everything else is Yuffie. If you don't like her, this really isn't worth it.

Way too short, I expected more content since this is only supposed to be the midgar section of ff7. But they really haven't added that much. Because the textures outside of the character models are really bad, Sometimes ps2 level. The voice acting is okay, I expect a bit of campiness from jrpgs. I can't stop imagining Futaba from P5 every time Jessie talks though. She should have changed her voice a little bit. Might as well have Nolan North play Cloud. The lip syncing is absolutely awful and ruins the immersion. I don't get how they could mess it up this badly. Nothing anyone says looks organic, Even during the otherwise beautiful cutscenes. Battle system is pretty fun, Good mix of the original atb system and live action. The music is also well done, Captures the essence of the original soundtrack while still sounding new. Side missions are garbage filler though. There is no reason ff7r needs to be a 3 disk $210+ game other than square is trying to milk us for our money and give us as little in return as they can. Not worth full price, $40 at best. It seems dishonest to call it "ff7 remake" without distinguishing that its only part 1 and only makes it halfway past disk 1 of the original. Expand

It is also important to note that this is not the whole experience, but the 1st part of what it might become a trilogy.

Technically its a marvel, and the OST is one of the best of all time. However, none of this is important considering the game that it "remakes". Everything that is taken from the original game stands out, amd few elements are even improved (more screentime for secondary characters gives depth). But unfortunately, many elements have been either dragged on (to infinity) or dumbed down.

Story changes aside (there are many, specially towards the end, but they are kinda subjective), the lenght of the game is artificially increased by adding terrible secondary tasks and making irrelevant areas longer (destroyed highway or Hojo's lab for example).

Combat is way less strategic than the original, and battles get repetitive even against bosses (some of them can take up to 30min). The camera is also bad, and we are often unable to tell what is even happening, specially with lots of enemies, flying foes or huge bosses. Summonings are great, but they don't appear many times. Overall, less challenging and deep than the old turn-based system.

The PS5 version is definitely the way to go, as 60fps and improved loading times are a gamechanger. The DLC is nice (a bit too short though) and introduces the old character of Yuffie to this new version of the story. Good game but drastically overrated just because of its name.

Without mentionning the story pacing, the story and lore would've really beneficiated from an M rating. People underestimate this rating and it goes way beyond blood splatting and gore. See Wall Market and the prostitution + sex slavery themes that the arc talks about? Or Cloud's PTSD events? Shinra's immoral research on humans? All those strong themes really suffered from being talked under a T rating and really deserved to be explained with a mature and unrestricted perspective. When you talk about such themes, you don't take gloves as if your public is composed of teenagers because the original FF7 was geared towards a more mature audience.
Now, the story pacing also suffered from all the unnecessary events and subquests that have been added to stretch out the playtime because Midgar's arc in the original only lasted 30 minutes. But fortunately, it really gets insanely better towards the end when the game really throws you epic moments after epic moments with nearly no pause at all. But still, the story pacing could have been avoided if the game was complete and tried to stick more to the original story as Nomura suggested (Whispers weren't his ideas).
At the end of the day, if you're not too picky, you'll go easily through the pacing and T rating, especially with how insane and cinematic the mise-en-scene is, how fun the combats are and how full of life is Midgar (though imo, Midgar's life should have been a bit toned down in terms of mood because in the original game, the city was described as really dark and depressive where the people were not as happy as in Remake).

Other than the load times and FPS boost, its a mediocre update that took far too long to release. The textures still are not polished and they should have been from the original release, and especially when they had the chance to utilize the power of the PS5. If you have a PS4 still don't fret on missing this one.

Characters from the main cast consistently shine until they're forced into meta writing cliches that perpetuate throughout any story that Nomura barfs out.

Giant shadow monsters, fate, fake-out deaths, no consequences ever, characters only talking prophetic questions with no tangible solutions because he'll never actually write a satisfying conclusion? That's a full score. All intrigue, no substance and a rip off of his Kingdom Hearts series reskinned to suck the soul out of the most popular game in the franchise as a cash cow.

    (+) Combat

FFVIIR features some of the most breathtaking characters, material quality, and environments to date. The presentation excels that of most AAA games and is nearly incomparable to its original. Characters are likable, relatable, and brought to life as I became well invested in their adventures throughout the game. Although it’s not a 'new' feature as it leans heavily on its original material, it is still executed well here. Performance is outstanding as the game is extremely well developed as I experienced no bugs, crashes, or glitches throughout all my playthroughs. The combat in this game can either be overwhelming or simplistic depending on the difficulty you play at. I recommend at least trying the hard difficulty (unlocked after first playthrough) because it encourages you to plan your attacks, Materia use, and ability use. Its real time strategy reimagined in a tactical modern-day age and executed to near perfection.

    (-) Traversal
    (-) Finale
    (-) UI/UX

Extremely outdated traversal as it is easily the worst part about this game. Slow walking, numerous cutscenes, and linear corridors interrupt the flow of the game in nearly every one of the 18 chapters. The Yuffie DLC aims to get rid of these annoyances by allowing you to sprint more frequently and glide through traversal puzzles more enjoyably. The ending of the main game has been controversial to a lot of people, but I appreciate the effort to try something new when compared to the original. The game earns its remake title instead of a remaster. However, the last 2 chapters of this game are very repetitive and frustrating in terms of gameplay. New characters are being introduced with not enough impact on gameplay and the combat begins to fade into a grind. The user interface is inept, especially the pause menu. There are way too many hidden options buried inside unnecessary menus (i.e. why is the ‘Upgrade Weapons’ menu in its own section? Just pair it with the Materia and Equipment section since all your stats and characters are shown there. Why is chapter selection hidden in the system menu? Why is the map so underwhelming and frustrating to navigate when traversing areas with different floors or height levels? etc…).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Haven't had to force myself through a game in a long time... but here we are.

Chapters 7-9 are some of the most slow and boring content I have played in a game in a long time. I had to break 9 and its unending series of fetch quests up over a month period to stomach getting through it (not to mention the cringe dance sequence).

The combat is just okay. Enemies are damage sponges and it is more flash over substance or depth. It is a series of rinse and repeat combat rooms for the most part and gets old after a while.

The progression system is weird and nothing but a percentage game offering very little past that.

The writing for the dialogue is pretty bad. I love JRPGs but compared to something like Persona 5 Royal it borders on cringe.

The dual sense experience is lackluster here, which was very sad because I love the controller's features on an immersion level.

The game looks beautiful, that is a positive. It is very polished and bug free.

I would skip this game honestly.

I realized now that the story is still great and relevant but the gameplay in this version is flawed if not broken in some battles. I prefer the original only because this was a bad execution of the active RPG mechanic.

Grinding isn't really a thing you can do but it feels very necessary and even if you try it's far more time consuming than before. Weapons, items, and accessories feel really useless throughout most of the game. I feel like the game heavily relies on its active battle mechanic but too many enemies have long portions where you just wait for your bar to fill and use magic. It always seemed like I spent too much time managing which materia and equips I had instead of playing which is kind of expected for an RPG but annoying for an active RPG. There's no quick swap for loadouts and that's just a huge fail.

Some standard enemy battles are way harder than boss battles. A few points had just a group of enemies that somehow wiped the floor with my team. Ones with grapples are the worst. The dodge time is incredibly specific and you can't block them. The enemies later in the game will almost always focus on the character you're playing which causes you to constantly jump around. I had moments where 4 enemies would team up and just do perpetual damage and grabs to every character I had control of. It was terrible.

I still love the story. The voice acting is pretty good. The graphics look great and I rarely ran into any problems with the game as long as you keep it in performance mode. Graphics mode is choppy and slow, almost unplayable. The quality improvement is marginal so keep it in performance. All in all I like it but you can tell this was made by people who understand RPG first and active action battle last.

The worst part of battle is that you can use a spell or ability and it can be canceled by any enemy at any time doing an attack on you. At some parts of the game this happening once or twice can mean you are going to run out of HP.

With this being a reimagined and modernized version of the game, I sadly can not NOT compare this to the original FF as I write this. Obviously, graphically it is far superior to the original version, but that was the only aspect, that exceeded the original. The game struggled with the FF XIII tube-like world system - in OG FF 7, the world felt massive and open to explore (Yes, I do get that this isn't the full FF7 experience yet - the stroy continues) but this game is built the same way FF XIII was (My least favourite of the franchise so far) You watch a pretty cinematic (and they are pretty!) then you wander into a tube-like world with no real freedom to explore, mostly getting from point A to B. Then there is a bossfight and then you do it all over again. Luckily the delivery of this system is well polished and if you like games for their stories - this one is for you. I do have to wonder though, if I've never played original FF7, would I even have any idea what is going on most of the game or who is this Sephiroth dude, that just drops haikus and leaves mysteriously half of the times. I know I started the review on a bit negative undertone, but I actually did love my playthrough. It just can't compete with the original game experience, and that is fine. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade shows the correct way to conclude a console generation’s journey. But beware - the Intermission episode won’t really satisfy the hunger for the next instalment - on the contrary, your impatience will probably only increase.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is a complete package, telling the story of Midgar from two different perspectives. Both the main campaign following Cloud and his journey, and Yuffie's own adventure, are well told with tight and responsive gameplay along with an impressive graphical update. These tales each leave exciting questions to be answered, and this reviewer can't wait to see what awaits Cloud and his friends beyond the City of Mako.

Final Fantasy Remake Intergrade is technically impressive. Fixing many of the original release’s technical issues while also improving the game for next-gen hardware. INTERmission offers an excellent character edition with that of Yuffie with some excellent gameplay to boot. Intergrade is simply more of the best parts of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
