Whether you’re playing ranked online or battling through the hours of content in the single player Episodes of South Town modes (although I wish these were more exciting than just text and battles against nobodies), there’s lots to do and learn while playing this solid fighter.

I have been waiting most of my life for much of what this game brings to the table. That said, it’s not like this is perfect by any stretch. I kind of wish the last two months of news for this game hadn’t happened, because one of the results is shoddy and problematic (not Ganacci. He can stay). That paired with a checklist story mode and a somewhat unintuitive online UI keep this from being my ultimate fighting dream come true. Even so, if you've been waiting on a good new Fatal Fury game, it's here, pure and simple, and if that's all you care about, then City of the Wolves delivers.

Unfortunately, due to budget limitations, it ends up being a stripped-down version rather than a true rival. The character roster is solid, but the inclusion of figures like Ronaldo and Salvatore Ganacci in a legendary franchise like Fatal Fury feels jarring.

Although City of the Wolves falls short of delivering the impactful finale one might expect from its story, it wins hearts with the quality of its combat engine and the way it embraces its own legacy. If only there weren’t that ridiculous Ronaldo and Ganacci nonsense.

A return that could make fans of the series happy. Graphically and technically magnificent; a small roster and lackluster presentation of some modes prevent a better rating.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is what SNK is best at. A pure fighter with great mechanics that are easy to understand and only the best will master. It's just a shame that so many of its modes and unlocks are shallow and don't add much to the overall experience.
