Mar 10, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is the definitive experience of one of the 2003 horror classics. With enhanced graphics, new mechanics, high replayability, and a story that offers significant weight for players, the title establishes itself as one of the best games in the franchise by far.
-
Mar 9, 2026While I’m a little hesitant to crown it already as the final-ever version that will never be bested, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a great overall experience for this all-timer, 20+ years later. Some may bicker over the finer details or want a specific previous Camera Obscura incarnation, but this is a top-notch version of a survival-horror treasure, best played loud and in the dark.
-
Mar 9, 2026Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is an excellent survival horror that does something different with its combat, improving on the original in every way.
-
Mar 9, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a remake done right. Not only does it allow a new generation of fans to enjoy one of the best horror game stories ever, but it’s also faithful in the right ways while expanding the lore and modernizing the gameplay. A beautiful game that is often chilling, any horror game fan will want to check out Team Ninja’s remake.
-
Apr 15, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake proves that not every remake needs to reinvent itself to succeed. By staying true to the original while refining its technical aspects and making subtle gameplay adjustments, it preserves what made it special. Its deep narrative, psychological horror, and haunting atmosphere remain as effective as ever. It may feel a bit rigid for newcomers, but it still stands as an essential experience within the genre.
-
Mar 26, 2026Fatal Frame II Remake still holds a very special place among horror games because it doesn’t make you feel powerful, it makes you feel uneasy, and it does that exceptionally well. The combat system is creative, the atmosphere is outstanding, and the sound design is disturbingly effective. But yes, some of its mechanical stiffness and slow pacing aren’t something everyone will have the patience for. In other words, this game tells you: “You have no weapons. No comfort. Barely any escape. Take this camera and go deal with the spirits yourself!” And the strange thing is: this idea still works incredibly well.
-
Mar 26, 2026The game removes some of the mechanics that made it even more terrifying, but it still stays true to the original and serves as an excellent introduction for a new generation of players.
-
Mar 16, 2026An excellent job of renovation and gameplay modernization for one of the finest horror games of the PlayStation 2 era. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake takes the original title and brings it into the modern age through targeted gameplay enhancements, new storylines, and top-tier audio-visual production—all of which bode well for the future of the franchise. Minor technical and balance issues persist, but we are confident that these will be largely resolved through post-launch updates.
-
Mar 9, 2026When people talk about wanting remakes, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is exactly the quality of remake they have in mind. Overall, this is a fantastic way to experience a beloved classic on modern hardware.
-
Mar 9, 2026A beautiful and deeply respectful remake of a Japanese horror classic, Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly Remake preserves the haunting atmosphere, tragic story, and unique Camera Obscura gameplay that made the original so memorable !Its many smart additions enrich exploration and combat, even if some longer encounters make the formula feel slightly more repetitive than before. A faithful and compelling return overall.
-
Mar 10, 2026It's clearly a more modern experience, with a better graphical presentation. Combat is more fluid now, but some decisions make this a sometimes frustrating experience.
-
Mar 9, 2026Extended runtime or no, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly’s central horrors haven’t lost their resonance. Trapped in an endless night, these broken spirits convey the hell of history with every miserable cry. They’re hard to look at and even harder to capture on camera, but it’s impossible to get anywhere without viewing this kind of ugliness head-on. People will probably argue about which version of this game is the “best” or “definitive” one for some time. The only reason this remake warrants that question is that it gets across the most salient point: Minakami Village is the kind of nightmare that should never be repeated.
-
Mar 9, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is what you can expect from a remake that rescues a gem of traditional psychological horror. As a representative of the genre, it keeps the player in constant tension through both its unsettling soundtrack and the grim atmosphere of a rural Japanese village. Its dark plot and the ability to guide the protagonist's sister carry a deep emotional component. Although it is locked at 30fps, it graphically improves all its aspects with great results.
-
Apr 2, 2026Fatal Frame II returns with significant updates, enhancing its already excellent horror atmosphere through modernised visuals and effects. The addition of a stalker mechanic may be somewhat questionable, however, the new gameplay and story content are more than welcome for those who played the original. A 60fps mode on consoles would have been appreciated, though the 30fps performance isn’t a major hindrance to enjoying its well-crafted horror experience.
-
Mar 16, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is an interesting example of how modernizing a game can be both a plus and minus. It looks fantastic, it's deeper and more complex, and it offers a lot more to do. At the same time, not all of its changes hit the mark, and some areas that were improved actually detract from the whole. It's still a darn fun game, but it feels like a "sidegrade," rather than an upgrade to the original.
-
Mar 11, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake surpasses Tecmo’s classic original in many aspects, but precisely because of that desire to be better than the game it is based on, it runs into issues we would have loved not to see—particularly the changes at the combat system level and the somewhat unstable performance it shows on consoles. Do we recommend it? Yes, absolutely. Despite the flaws mentioned in this review, it is undoubtedly a game we enjoyed and one we believe you should give a chance. It is currently the most accessible way to experience this horror classic, especially considering the very high price of an original PS2 copy.
-
Mar 11, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake brings the beloved horror classic back to modern platforms, sending players into the cursed Minakami Village where restless spirits lurk around every corner. The eerie atmosphere and stellar audio design shine, even if ghost fights drag on a bit too long. Miserable trip? Absolutely - and that’s exactly why it works.
-
Mar 10, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is a completely new version of the game initially made for Playstation 2 and later on Wii. The story revolves around twins Mio and Mayu who find themselves trapped in a village shrouded in eternal night.
-
Mar 10, 2026Once the dust has been cleared, one could say that Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is the same game released almost twenty-five years ago, simply given a thorough facelift. In reality, however subtle, the structural changes are significant in bringing this little masterpiece up to date, particularly regarding the combat system. All around, a series of embellishments demonstrate that Team Ninja didn't just do their homework, but tried to integrate as much as possible without distorting the authorial vein of the work. From this perspective, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake represents an excellent example of video game preservation: a respectful restoration that doesn't rewrite the past, but simply makes it more accessible to the present.
-
Mar 10, 2026Overall, the Fatal Frame 2 remake is a moderately ambitious project that aims to balance faithfulness with innovation. On one hand, it preserves the melancholic atmosphere and slow pacing that made the original a classic of the genre; on the other, it introduces numerous changes designed to make the gameplay feel more modern and accessible. The result is an experience that seeks to satisfy both longtime fans and new players, bringing one of the most influential survival horror titles of the early 2000s back into the spotlight and demonstrating that the Japanese model of psychological horror can still work in a gaming landscape largely dominated by far more action-oriented approaches.
-
Mar 10, 2026Fatal Frame II Remake adapts a great game, delivering a constant, suffocating sense of dread through darker areas and meticulously crafted ghost designs, while making a natural push to boost replayability.
-
Mar 10, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is probably the best of the series so far, with an atmosphere and narrative that will hook you in and leave you feeling incredibly immersed. There is a great deal of depth to the camera-based combat and exploring the village is a wonderfully atmospheric experience. I could have done without the stalker enemies and the game throws a vast amount of lore and optional side stories at you at times, but the core game deserves to push the series into wider appreciation.
-
Mar 9, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake successfully resurrects the absolute masterpiece of the franchise. The visual overhaul, the suffocating sound design, and the new side stories deepen an already tragic and unforgettable narrative. While the updated combat system is mostly a step forward, questionable additions like 'enraged' spirits and a slightly unbalanced upgrade economy can artificially slow down the pacing, especially during the first playthrough. Still, these flaws cannot overshadow what remains a phenomenal, chilling, and emotionally devastating J-Horror experience that every genre fan should play.
-
Mar 9, 2026Despite its unbalanced and sometimes frustrating combat, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake still tells an excellent story that deserves recognition. Outside of the narrative, however, its visual presentation is inconsistent, especially by the modern standards expected from a remake. For players who do not rely on Portuguese subtitles, the title can still be enjoyable and serve as a good entry point to the franchise.
-
Mar 9, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a strong reimagining of a horror classic, smartly expanding on both combat and exploration from the original in clever ways. Despite such a strong and positive change in the fundamentals of the game, the locked and stuttering 30fps mode on consoles is a baffling choice for an otherwise stellar remake. Even so, this is Fatal Frame at its best and well worth any self-respecting horror fan's time.
-
Mar 9, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake successfully brings one of survival horror’s most unsettling classics back to life with improved visuals, refined Camera Obscura combat systems, and an atmosphere that remains deeply oppressive and memorable. While the remake largely respects the slow-burn pacing and narrative mystery that defined the original, a few uneven combat mechanics and missed gameplay opportunities keep it from reaching its full potential. Even so, the haunting village setting, disturbing Wraith encounters, and the uneasy bond between Mio and Mayu make this a compelling return for a cult horror franchise that still stands apart from modern genre trends.
-
Mar 9, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a pleasantly anxiety-inducing game that combines the creepy thrills of the horror genre with the sharp satisfaction of taking a good photo. Though there are a couple of bumps in the road when it comes to how smoothly the game plays, the atmosphere and vibes are unparalleled and, when combined with the creative photography-based gameplay, create a remake that is absolutely worth experiencing – so long as you have a bit of extra patience.
-
Mar 9, 2026It's not a flawless photograph, but Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is memorable, terrifying, and artistically stunning.
-
Mar 9, 2026If you’re a fan of Silent Hill f, PS2 J-horror classics, or want another butt-clenching horror experience to fill the shotgun-sized hole left behind by Resident Evil Requiem, then Crimson Butterfly Remake is a must-play for survival horror fans. While not every new mechanic sticks the landing, the upgraded graphics, unnerving environments, and enhanced combat let Crimson Butterfly Remake successfully spread its wings and soar above the original. If this is what we can expect from future titles, then Fatal Frame fans are in for a frightfully good future.
-
Apr 20, 2026A faithful remake that preserves the essence of a horror classic, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly delivers a haunting atmosphere, strong psychological tension, and improved visuals and audio. However, its slow pacing, repetitive combat, and dated mechanics may not appeal to all players, especially those seeking a more dynamic experience.
-
Mar 10, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is not afraid of what it has always been. Despite its new and pleasant visual makeover, its heart draws heavily from old-school survival horror, where even the clumsiness of the controls and the feeling of never being fully in control played a fundamental role in unsettling the player. This remake, directed by the series’ original creator, deliberately aims to put you in a difficult position, casting you in the role – far from agile – of a young girl facing hell armed only with a flashlight and a camera. Everything contributes to this sense of discomfort: from the uneven difficulty balance to the rusty combat mechanics, issues that eventually start to weigh on the overall experience. In this sense, too, it remains pure, and as such it deserves respect. Just be aware that it may not be a game for everyone. It speaks to a very specific niche that will love it, just as it has loved every one of its reincarnations.
-
Mar 10, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a fairly efficient reconstruction of a classic. Playing it safe in its approach, it's a competent production that manages to be inviting for both newcomers and veteran players who will feel reassured to see that Minakami hasn't changed much since his last stint, although there are enough new elements to make them feel immersed as if it were an almost fresh experience.
-
Mar 9, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is a remarkable piece of interactive horror history. The nuanced storytelling and atmosphere immerse you in its strange, haunting world, while the Camera Obscura offers a unique mechanic that adds tension to every encounter. However, although the remake remains close to the source material, it doesn’t provide the significant upgrade that other modern revivals of iconic titles have delivered. Much of the original era’s DNA remains, with some clunky controls and awkward animations hindering the experience. Regardless, this is still a remake of a classic. Despite its flaws, fans and newcomers can immerse themselves in a pillar of the survival horror genre, one that continues to haunt with its eerie village and tragic story.
-
Mar 9, 2026Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a perfect example of what bringing a classic to the modern era can be. Updating gameplay and visuals to look and feel better while leaving the original unnerving story intact.
