Despite not being an annual franchise, UFC 6 still feels more like a remaster of its predecessor than a true new installment. The visual upgrades, improved strike impact, and stronger presentation are certainly welcome, but they hardly justify a wait of nearly three years, or the full price being asked for this latest entry.

There is some fun to be had in EA UFC 6, with a new striking system and fighters playing more like their real-life counterparts. The Hall of Legends is fantastic. But it's really heartbreaking to see career mode get almost no significant updates at all for the third time in a row.

EA Sports UFC 6 doesn't reinvent the wheel, and makes some unnecessary changes by slowing down the fight at key moments and making ground fighting more complicated than it should be. Furthermore, the absence of legendary UFC fighters like Anderson Silva is noticeable. If your idea is to buy the game to play with current legends like Poatan, the game is certainly worthwhile, but there are some areas where the game falls short.

UFC 6 delivers where it matters most: the fights. The action is intense, satisfying, and backed by the strongest presentation the series has seen to date. Some new additions, like The Gym and Flow State, feel unnecessary and can disrupt the pace. Still, with its refined gameplay and robust career offerings, UFC 6 earns its place as the best entry in the franchise so far, even though it doesn’t win by knockout.

UFC 6’s incremental gameplay improvements and bewildering stagnation fly in the face of the fact that it’s been three years since the last entry in the series. With annualized sports franchises, you almost expect iterative innovations year after year, but after such a long wait, I expected a bigger bump with UFC 6. The improved character models, graphics, and fighter distinctions are welcome improvements, but when almost everything else feels so familiar or inessential, I can’t help but wonder if EA Sports’ UFC franchise has experienced too much time uncontested at the top.
