Apr 8, 2024Ultimately, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an odd combination between Skyrim, Elden Ring, and Tears of the Kingdom that scratches a very unique itch. It might not be for everyone, but it’s certainly for someone, and it’ll be exciting to see what kind of DLC Capcom have planned for it.
-
The EnemyApr 4, 2024In Dragon’s Dogma 2, every system, every combat and every companion teaches us that there is weight in our decisions. Choices bring consequences. When something changes, it changes for good. Therefore, when we enter this final stretch and our will is not only capable of reshaping reality, but also the very tool through which we can bring the game to its end, it is also necessary to recognize the excellence of the game. This is also why frustration leads to admiration. Yes, I wanted to go back. But that would go against everything that makes Dragon’s Dogma 2 special. I can create another game, another reality, but that one was definitive. And what better way to leave a world real than to make it definitive?
-
Mar 25, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a surprising, maddening, glorious masterpiece.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 starts out with the same level of mystique and overwhelming scope that Elden Ring hits you with, but once you understand how this world functions, you become a master of it. It’s daunting, sure, but after you overcome that initial hurdle, it’s incredible. I adored tearing through goblins, shooting ballistae at drakes, clinging to flying dragons, and changing the very fate of the world as the Arisen. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is easily the best action RPG of 2024 so far – and is very unlikely to be dethroned – and manages to go toe-to-toe with FromSoftware’s magnum opus in terms of how impactful and absorbing exploring the world feels. This is what Dragon’s Dogma was always meant to be, and it’s a masterpiece.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the ultimate version of Capcom’s fantasy adventure, offering unparalleled, visceral combat against stunning and imposing mythical creatures and thoroughly rewarding exploration you need to experience.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a sprawling RPG adventure that innovates on the absolute best open world design trends while encouraging and rewarding player agency. There’s potential for players to pour hundreds of hours into this world and still not see everything there is to see. This, combined with top-of-the-range combat, makes for one of the most exciting games we’ve played this decade.
-
Mar 20, 2024A huge improvement over the original, and a captivating journey from beginning to end.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is a landmark release for open world action RPGs. From its thoroughly immersive world and its stellar combat to the incredible emergent gameplay its bevy of systems enable, Capcom's long-anticipated sequel delivers spectacularly in more ways than one. By definition, it's going to turn some people off with its many eccentricities, but it's those eccentricities exactly that make it such an utterly unique and unforgettable experience.
-
Mar 31, 2024The thesis of Dragon’s Dogma’s sequel appears to be that the original was ahead of its time, and indeed will likely draw audiences back to the imaginative original. Dragons Dogma 2 is a game filled with genius ideas about how fantasy roleplaying can be turned into a video game. It requires unlearning much of what we take for granted in fantasy action adventures but rewards this with unique and dynamic world events that will constantly surprise players. It is a masterful sequel that polishes every element of its first draft, with the technology to make those ideas into a seamless adventure marked by heart-pounding threats and euphoric discoveries.
-

Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma II is a masterfully refined take on the original game. It’s easy to get lost in its massive world for hours on end and truly immerse yourself into the role of the Arisen. There are a ton of technical problems and oddities throughout the game, but somehow those didn’t stop us from having a blast. -
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 feels like the first proper RPG I've played in years. Its world is captivating, filled with stories both told and waiting to be found. This is a must-play for RPG fans who've grown tired of the hand-holding nature of modern games and just want to get lost somewhere magical and quite frankly, brutal as hell.
-
Mar 20, 2024If you miss the times when playing video games meant sharing experiences and secrets with your friends and games in which every step was a discovery, then look no further: Dragon's Dogma 2 is the game with the most heart you will find.
-
Mar 26, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is one of the best RPG of this generation. A rare gem that shines like a classic game within the genre.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 follows pretty closely many aspects from previous entries in the franchise, both the good and the bad. Gameplay-wise, Dragon's Dogma 2 definitely includes elements that feel a little bit outdated, and that could've been tweaked one way or another in order to further improve the overall experience. Still, this is an excellent RPG, and every fan of the genre is certainly in for quite a treat.
-
Mar 20, 2024Blending intricate RPG elements with captivating action, Dragon’s Dogma 2 offers a vast open world ripe for exploration and brimming with freedom. Its dynamic mission system seamlessly integrates main and side quests, inviting players to craft their own narrative. Despite occasional performance hiccups and a somewhat limited bestiary, the game delivers unforgettable combat encounters against colossal foes, enhanced by robust character customization and an asynchronous multiplayer feature. While visual imperfections persist, the game’s remarkable sound design and immersive atmosphere elevate the overall experience, making Dragon’s Dogma 2 a truly exhilarating adventure.
-
PLAYJun 6, 2024An unforgettable adventure that you can call your own, littered with amazing discoveries, laugh-out-loud tussles, and so much more just off the beaten path. [Issue#40, p.75]
-
Apr 24, 2024Don’t be distracted by the initially frustrating features and totally unnecessary microtransactions. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a unique masterpiece that we will be talking about for years to come.
-
Edge MagazineApr 18, 2024The game's greatest triumph is in delivering a truly singular vision. This is not the work of a team in thrall to trend or fashion, its designers given the opportunity to build from their own imagining instead. At a time when many rival studios are guided by the whims of focus testing and audience pandering, it has resulted in a game with one elusive quality. Dragon's Dogma 2 is, more than anything else, unforgettable. [Issue#397, p.98]
-
Apr 15, 2024While it retains some of the flaws of the first game and is far from satisfying story-wise, it is a unique experience in terms of adventure with an open world that is fun to explore. Struggling to beat dragons in a sandpit has never been so enjoyable.
-
Apr 2, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 offers a truly distinct open world experience. Its vibrant and believable fantasy world continuously delivers surprises and memorable encounters, fostering a remarkable sense of adventure from beginning to end.
-
Apr 1, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a funny valentine. The graphics aren’t particularly stunning, quest progression can be vague, and it has some deliberately old-school ideas that are frustrating to deal with. Still, the game is able to capture a sense of freedom and wonder while delivering on challenging boss fights throughout exploration. It’s one of the few games that has made me want to investigate every inch of the world map without any prompting by the game through a notification or a quest. And I haven’t had that sensation in an astonishingly long time.
-
Mar 26, 2024If you are a fan of the first video game, you definitely have to try it, because as I already said, it expands the experience in terms of mechanics and also with a much larger map. On the other hand, if you are new here, you better tread with caution, unless you are already used to similar games that are placed in the RPG genre.
-
Mar 25, 2024I’d wholeheartedly recommend checking out Dragon’s Dogma 2, whether it’s a game you’ve been anticipating for the past 12 years, or you’re just curious as to what all the hype is about. It’s an extremely fun RPG in a year that’s already seen a number of excellent RPG’s, which is really saying something when you look back at what’s come out since January. Definitely give it a shot, you won’t be disappointed.
-
Mar 22, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 offers a high level of quality in most of its aspects, and succeeds in introducing a world in which we can easily get lost and lose track of time, and enjoy everything in it.
-
InverseMar 22, 2024There are times you can feel Dragon’s Dogma 2 groaning under the weight of its own ambition, but the sheer confidence of its unfaltering vision keeps it surging forward.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is a must-have game for RPG players who want to experience a real exciting adventure. Capcom has managed to bring us the sequel the series deserves, in all its glory.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is going to be the most ambitious game that you play for quite some time. It’s truly spectacular for its scope and the many multifaceted dynamics that ensure that nothing about it, at any point, becomes routine or rote. It’s also frustrating, archaic, and a mess in so many other ways, but the developers left nothing on the table in making this, and it’s hard not to admire such brazen creativity.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a huge upgrade over its predecessor, offering a grander adventure that’s full of choice, consequence and discovery. Every journey you make, big or small, has the chance to be full of wonder, whether it’s due to finding valuable loot or encountering a fearsome enemy that’s rewarding to combat. Its lack of hand-holding in some regards still might deter some players, but for those who value a sense of adventure, Dragon’s Dogma 2 might just end up being the highlight of 2024.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is one of the best open world games to date. With its free combat system, the company of quirky pawns and the lively game world, this second part offers the ultimate adventurer feeling. It is still a complex RPG with many underlying systems, but they all work together to continuously provide your gaming experience with unforgettable moments.
-
Mar 20, 2024If action role-playing games are something you are into, then Dragon’s Dogma 2 is your next big game. It’s that simple. You may have been thrown off by talk of the lack of fast travel. But the game’s director Hideaki Itsuno, is right: a good game doesn’t need it. Dragon’s Dogma 2’s world is covered with experiences to have. It could be a hidden cave, a simple treasure chest, or even a giant griffin that just wants to create chaos for you and your party of pawns. Combat is easy to understand, and different enough from vocation to vocation that when I get bored with one class, I can easily switch to try something different. It’s not about the destination, but rather the journey. As silly as it sounds, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is all about the friends we made along the way.
-
Mar 20, 2024There are few open world games in which you can move so easily from one adventure to another, but Capcom does it by cleverly bringing together all kinds of well-known gameplay systems. Dragon's Dogma 2 offers fantastic combat and a wonderful sense of discovery, and above all a series of unforgettable moments.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is true to the spirit of the original in all the ways a sequel should be. Simultaneously obtuse yet immersive, brutal yet rewarding and handsomely engaging yet hands-off. The struggle in the early hours gives way to what is one of this year’s best RPG experiences, with an incredible amount to discover, overcome and master. It’s been a long 12 years, but the Arisen’s return is one of a burning heart, begging for you to get lost in its weird and wonderful world.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 leverages emergent gameplay to put forward an action-adventure that’s challenging, thrilling, and constantly unpredictable. Rich in well-thought-out systems and mechanics that feed into one another seamlessly, it’s a game that sinks its claws into you and doesn’t let go.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 revisits the strong merits of its 12-year-old predecessor, which still have plenty to offer - from the diversity of classes to enjoyable combat and an engaging world begging to be explored. The concept of sharing companions with players worldwide and their contribution to your experience is a unique concept, and combined with simulation elements, it creates a highly immersive adventure of which you are an integral part. It's a shame about the technical issues and dated graphics, but everything else more than makes up for it.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma II doesn't feel like anything else on the market. Despite fantasy action-RPG being one of the most common genres, Dragon's Dogma II manages to stand out from the crowd. The unusual atmosphere, excellent combat, and general sense of place and weight make it feel distinct in a world full of Soulslikes or Skyrim clones. It's a boatload of fun to play, and it manages to make what could be a tiring genre feel fresh and full of life. If you're looking to hunt some monsters and cast some spells, Dragon's Dogma II is easily one of the best titles on the market.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 captures the spirit of the original without sanding down the edges of what made it excellent. Its insistence on player exploration and discovery, coupled with an ending I will think about for the rest of the year, makes Dragon’s Dogma 2 a standout game and a worthy successor.
-
Mar 20, 2024Despite my reservations about the late game, Dragon's Dogma 2 remains an exceptional experience on almost all fronts and an adventure that you unequivocally won't want to miss.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is exactly what veterans will be expecting, as double-edged as that may be, but there's simply no other action RPG experience like it.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma II is an instant classic. Capcom hasn’t reinvented the wheel here, opting instead to deliver the same blend of exploration and monster slaying that they established in 2012 while turning it into a full-on adventure simulator via a sandbox that is capable of generating jaw-dropping moments at every turn. It may not be polished to the degree that I’d like, but I find it impossible to be angry at Capcom when what they’ve delivered carries a level of ambition and seamlessness that needs to be seen to be believed. In a year stacked to the rafters with game-of-the-year-worthy RPGs already, Dragon’s Dogma II is another fantastic addition to what is already becoming a complicated discussion and should not be overlooked.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 puts us back in the role of the Arisen on a journey through a world full of dangers and exciting moments. With an exploration encouraged by an excellent combat system based on the best mechanics of some of its most famous games, Capcom consolidates Dragon's Dogma as one of its best franchises. Dragon's Dogma 2 is one of the best action RPGs ever released and a must-have title for fans of the genre.
-
Mar 20, 2024Just like the original game, Dragon Dogma 2 demands that players meet it on its own terms. Trying to play it like other popular action RPGs will be frustrating and probably not much fun. The barrier to entry is not just skill, but embracing its mechanics. For those players willing to set aside their notions of how an RPG has to work, the rewards are rich, singular, and utterly immersive in ways that have rarely been seen in the genre.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is one of the best RPGs of recent years thanks to its fantastic combat system and in-depth role-playing mechanics - despite the poor technical implementation on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma II takes everything from its predecessor and enhances it to give us one of the most entertaining RPGs of today. Its flashy combat, satisfying exploration, lively and uncertain open world, and complex pawn system make getting lost in its fantasy world a delight, although it has some technical issues.
-
Apr 1, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 shouldn’t be surprising. It builds on what made the original game a cult classic and doesn’t flinch away from different approaches than the critical darlings. And yet, I find myself constantly delighted and shocked with each play session, feelings that grew more common, not less, further into the game. I suspect despite finishing the main story, I have many more nights uncovering secrets and battling fierce beasts in the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 ahead of me, and I hope the same for you.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is a top-notch experience for anyone who loves undertaking challenging open-ended adventures at their own pace. It's definitely old-school in its approach but the lack of modern amenities certainly makes it stand out amongst its contemporaries.
-
Mar 26, 2024With Dragon's Dogma 2, Capcom is making an incredible comeback. Not that this sequel revolutionizes the franchise, but it reminds us that it was innovative 12 years ago. Because long before Zelda Breath of the Wold and Elden Ring, Capcom had already initiated itself into systemic gaming, by presenting a less interventionist and above all more innovative open world. With a first attempt in 2012, the Japanese studio once again imposed its ideas, still as contemporary twelve years later. Proof that Capcom was ahead of its time and that it had already understood that the freedom offered to the player had to come through a questioning of the open world game.
-
Mar 21, 2024Perhaps we had set our expectations too high for Dragon's Dogma 2. We were hoping it would be an RPG capable of erasing all the uncertainties of the original and fully leveraging its huge potential. Instead, some of the most obtuse elements of the progenitor have remained in this sort of sequel/remake, proving to be concepts genuinely desired by the team and not included due to a lack of resources. No, this is not a perfect game, yet even with its shortcomings, it retains all the charm of its predecessor, representing once again a truly unique experience in the genre and evolving its most peculiar aspects. All things considered, Itsuno did what he wanted to do; who knows if this time it will reach the desired peaks with a potential expansion.
-
Mar 21, 2024Despite technical issues you simply have to notice the quality of Dragon's Dogma 2. The developers ignored the trends and created a game focused strongly on a great idea for exploration and combat. It's a truly unique action RPG.
-
Mar 20, 2024A sequel done right in the truest sense, improving on everything from epic monster hunting to slaying mechanics while delivering a vast fantasy world.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma II is a fantastic sequel. The greatest strength of this game is, once again, the abundance of unusual ideas, mechanics and various cool little things that give it a unique feel. However, it’s a shame that Capcom didn’t find the courage to make a bolder step forward and ditch some annoying outdated elements. While it’s a very good game, it’s easy to imagine it being even better.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma II is both a blessing and a curse for fans of the genre and the series itself. A game that, even more, reflects Hideaki Itsuno's desire to keep players from breathing space or advantages.
-
Mar 25, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 features good graphics, an extremely comprehensive character creation system, and highly enjoyable gameplay. Its issues do not diminish the experience, which deserves to be praised.
-
Mar 20, 2024With Dragon’s Dogma 2 Capcom is offering a mammoth action role-playing game that will delight fans of classic fantasy RPG genre. Driven by missions that can often be solved in a variety of ways, sometimes even pleasingly puzzle-heavy, and an atomically staged game world made up of very varied biomes, you will experience a story full of twists and turns and challenging fights against huge monsters. Sadly, performance-wise 30 fps is the limit here on consoles. Also, sometimes you encounter smaller logical errors and minor visual bugs, but overall it’s a very entertaining title.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is a rare beast, and one we would gladly save from extinction, thanks to its unparalleled sense of freedom and discovery and fast paced combat system. It's a courageous game too, with divisive game design that not every player will appreciate. But believe us when we say the travel is well worth it.
-
May 27, 2024To have a genuine love for Dragon's Dogma 2 can be a challenge. And yet, despite its many shortcomings, it's really, really hard not to love it.
-
Apr 24, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 offers much the same as the previous installment. Expect varied combat and gameplay options, a graphically fine presentation, beautiful soundtrack and a world that demands to be discovered. At the same time, it is unfortunate that the story is somewhat simple and short, the performance occasionally disappoints and the variety of enemies is somewhat limited. Points to consider, but that does not take away from the fact that the sequel as a total package is a must have for fans of the franchise.
-
Apr 19, 2024You won’t enjoy the sometimes risible dialogue, nor the punishing and at times unfair randomness that can punctuate your trekking, leaving you a long way from safety without companions. In the end, though, it is that tension between chaos and cruelty that makes the game frequently compelling.
-
Apr 8, 2024The actual combat that punctuates your winding journeys just ups the unpredictability further. Where Dark Souls and its descendants are all sharpness and patience, and Monster Hunter is all depth and studious fluency, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is barely contained chaos and frantic reaction.
-
Pocket-lintApr 3, 2024If you dive into Dragon's Dogma 2 and accept its quirks, you'll discover an experience unlike anything else on the market.
-
Apr 1, 2024Capcom has managed to create an epic action RPG that makes us believe that there is still room for good ideas in the video games industry. My only regret is the performance problems and the somewhat outdated visuals for the capabilities of today's hardware.
-
Mar 31, 2024With an innovative Pawn system by your side, delve into a so-so story in a deep world teeming with intrigue and mythical beasts. Challenge awaits at every turn, from the treacherous landscapes to the heart-pounding battles, where mastery of diverse vocations is key to victory. Though stained by visual monotony and performance woes, Dragon’s Dogma 2 with its thrilling emergent gameplay and superb combat stands as a solid return to the series.
-
Mar 27, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 presents a challenging yet rewarding gaming experience. Amidst breathtaking scenery and immersive exploration, the game's combat against colossal monsters is where it shines. An innovative mechanic allows players to integrate friends' customizable Pawns into their team, enriching gameplay with shared memories and strategic depth. However, the game suffers from notable faults such as the absence of fast travel and outdated camera controls. Despite these drawbacks, the dynamic world overflowing with roaming NPCs and unpredictable enemy encounters keeps gameplay engaging. While combat provides unexpected challenges and gratifying victories, the game's performance disappoints, with a lackluster framerate and noticeable choppiness.
-
Mar 26, 2024Fans of the original will see growth, while newcomers will be treated to an extremely fulfilling journey through the world – where there’s aught to see around every corner of the map.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 doubles down on what made the original game so great while streamlining just enough to make the experience more accessible to a general audience.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a title with a unique and interesting proposition, but which is not intended for everyone. By putting player autonomy at the heart of the experience, Capcom's game offers a feeling of freedom and a pleasure of exploration enhanced by brilliant gameplay and a pawn system that is still fascinating. But this immersion at all costs gives rise to uncomfortable, but voluntary, design choices in order to make this adventure credible. However, the experience still suffers from certain real flaws, such as its overly classic and not always clear quests, its sometimes messy combat and especially its numerous slowdowns on console. In short, Dragon's Dogma will delight those who play the game with its unique and uncompromising proposition, surely leaving aside those too accustomed to the comfort of modern games.
-
Mar 20, 2024If this review feels chaotic, then that’s a fair reflection of the game. It is mad, fun, fantastical chaos and I honestly love it. Before I started writing this, I had left my Arisen and her endearingly incompetent pawn in an ancient battleground patrolled by a dragon. We blasted it with a couple of ballista bolts, and then it flew over and crushed the ballista with a claw, at which point I realised we were somewhat outgunned here and ran for some castle ruins to hide from the creature. This seemed like a good idea until skeletal warriors rose from the ground, and I realised the castle is extremely haunted. I don’t know how we’ll get out of this situation. But I do know it will be an adventure.
-
Mar 20, 2024It walks a tightrope of intrigue that balances quirky systems, fun combat and obscure secrets with frustrating circumstances, weird world-building and curious design choices, and somehow manages to make it across, and if you embrace all it has to offer, you might too.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a strange and wonderful game that seems haunted by some of yesteryear’s bugaboos. It is a retelling and reimplementation of all of those wonderful ideas from the 2012 cult-classic, including an awesome dynamic world and some of the best combat in the genre that integrates a subtle but amazingly complex physics system. On the other hand, its finicky ally AI, clunky climbing, choppy frame rate, and camera with a habit of going haywire at the worst times are all “features” I wish hadn’t been brought back for another round. Even so, there’s an action-RPG here that’s richly rewarding and incomparable to its contemporaries if you can be patient with its quirks and open to embracing its hands-off open-world and quest designs.
-
Mar 20, 2024All in all, I think Dragon's Dogma 2 is a great proposition for the RPG genre and a title that delivers on many of its promises of great adventures for players. But despite its many good things, its interesting story and the wonderful feeling of exploration and living a truly unusual adventure, the game has those technical issues that fail to deliver a product as well rounded as it could be.
-
Mar 20, 2024Despite its slightly dated graphics and occasional frame rate issues, Dragon's Dogma II emerges as a standout action RPG, offering a unique style and refreshing gameplay formula that captivates players. While it may struggle on modern consoles, its compelling experience makes it a must-play for fans of the genre.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 represents a significant achievement in the action RPG genre. It crafts an expansive, immersive world that beckons players to explore its depths, engage in tactical combat, and grow alongside their characters. The game demands patience and a willingness to delve into its complexities, offering a rewarding experience for those who commit to its journey.
-
Mar 20, 2024Clunkiness aside, Dragon's Dogma 2 still manages to be a wonderful journey, and a true novelty among fantasy RPGs.
-
Apr 9, 2024I'm reading all the articles, the review, the praise, and while I understand the hype - this is a fantastic Dark Fantasy RPG with great combat and fun quest designs, it also has some of the most frustrating and infuriating gameplay mechanics I have seen in a while. They make Dragon's Dogma 2 feel like a soft reboot, rather than a sequel that improves on the downsides of its predecessor.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 will belong to a fairly specific audience. The game requires a significant amount of time to truly enjoy it. You can't simply play it for a moment because you'll feel like you haven't made any progress. At the same time, it's great that such a title appeared – in times when AAA titles are bland and safe a different approach is needed. We needed a game to demonstrate that things can be done differently.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an intricately crafted and highly engaging action RPG. However, it has many frustrating mechanics that could potentially alienate many players. Despite its disappointing narrative, it still provides a highly entertaining experience that Dragon’s Dogma and hardcore action RPG fans will undoubtedly enjoy.
-
Mar 22, 2024Like the original game, Dragon's Dogma 2 excels when you're out in its open world with your pawn allies – finding hidden caves and treasure, fighting monsters, and generally losing track of time. Also like the original, it falls short in terms of quest design, convenience, and general polish. A somewhat conservative sequel, then, but one that retains the charm of its predecessor.
-
Mar 20, 2024A sequel more in line with a Remake tarnished by a format outdated by today's standards.
-
Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is an exhilarating, if occasionally frustrating, RPG full of dynamic player-driven moments.
-
Mar 20, 2024An entertaining open world action role-player, with an interesting approach to AI-controlled companions, but which proves disappointingly similar to the 2012 original.
-
Mar 30, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is outwardly hostile to its audience, embracing everything that made the original such a hassle to enjoy. A game designed with the purpose of wasting a player’s time, which makes Capcom’s “time saver” microtransactions all the more sickening. It’s a glorified xerox that you will adore if you believe Dragon’s Dogma was literally perfect when it released in 2012 and absolutely none of the progress within games development in the past twelve years meant one fucking thing. Indeed, if your idea of a good time is having a terrible time, you’ll love this malignant resurrection of ideas and implementations that should have stayed long dead.

Mar 22, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 doesn't always feel like a modern, polished open-world game, but it has all the weight of one. If, like me, you're okay with some bugs, some goofs, and some randomly punishing difficulty in service of a big, impressive adventure, I think it's worth the pain. Destiny calls you toward the dragon, but the real victories are the goblins we toss along the way.

Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 offers an incredible Fantasy adventure with some of the most engaging open-world exploration I've experienced.

Mar 20, 2024Crucially, my experience with the game is incomplete, and everyone else’s will be, too. It’s built for replayability, but it’s also built for collective mapping and interpretation. I can’t begin to comprehend on my own how many variables and alternative outcomes are at play here, especially given the game’s intentionally restrictive save options (one save slot, limited manual saving; when you make a decision, you need to stand by it). One particular mechanic I don’t believe I saw at all: “dragonsplague,” a disease pawns can contract as they pass through various game worlds that, supposedly, has cataclysmic effects if left unattended. I still don’t know what dragonsplague does, because I played Dragon’s Dogma 2 pre-release, and not many of the available pawns were player-made. (Big ups, though, to the few people who did hire Skroat. He and I both appreciated it.)

Malditos NerdsMar 20, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a sequel that stays true to its roots, but in the best way possible. It recaptures what made the original unique and enhances it with new vocations to choose from and dozens of skills to master. It's an adventure across two gigantic continents to explore, brimming with mysteries and treasures, and a strong presence of mythological beasts to defeat. [Review in Progress]

Apr 8, 2024Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the best video game adventure I’ve experienced since Elden Ring, a far more approachable open-world game that has no doubt colored how players perceive this year’s big fantasy RPG. (It certainly did for me.) But like another FromSoftware game, the original Demon’s Souls, I found that once I had accepted Dragon’s Dogma 2’s peculiarities and deciphered what it was asking of me, I fell deeply in love. Dragon’s Dogma 2 awakens those old feelings of learning to overcome my expectations of what a game should be, then discovering new types of experiences along the way. That’s the best kind of journey. Mar 20, 2024Dragon's Dogma 2 is an absolute masterpiece in terms of offering a true sense of adventure. Fans of the first game shouldn't even begin to hesitate; this is everything that Dragon's Dogma wanted to be back in 2012, and it's utterly glorious at its best. But even if you're newly Arisen, this sequel stands alongside some of the greatest open world journeys in gaming — an unruly frame rate its only disappointing blemish. [Review in Progress]

Mar 20, 2024No one who plays Dragon’s Dogma 2 for more than half an hour could deny that it’s a messy game. It inherits many of its predecessor’s flaws, along with its strengths—most notably its writing, which, even when applied to characters who aren’t the deliberately personality-deficient Pawns, can be hollow, stilted, and dull. And it can never quite shake the feeling that its gigantic, complex world is teetering right on the edge of this engine’s ability to render it convincingly. Even so, it’s the mess of almost limitless, nigh-arrogant ambition, a game willing to frustrate, confuse, or stress out its players in pursuit of a deeper emotional connection with its vast, hostile world. It fundamentally refuses to follow any tune but its own—which inevitably means it can go places, and accomplish things, that the player is unlikely to expect.
