This is a classic game that really sucks you in. It has a relatively slow (on rails) start, and it takes a while to have access to (and understand) the overall mechanic. The graphics are deceptive (they aren't technically great), but there's a completeness in it's creative/artistic vision is impressive. And like a lot of Arkane games, it feels wonderful to play... and great to go loud. I just feel sorry we won't have another Arkane game on PS5. Expand

This game is a MUST PLAY. I didn’t think it looked great from the trailers but rented it anyway. Man was I surprised when I got so addicted to it. It’s so much fun. The only criticisms I have is Julianna is too under powered and the online is laggy. Still a solid 9/10.

Good premise and fun gameplay. It's a really fun stealth game, sadly the action gunplay feels a bit stiff. Buy if you love stealth games.

I picked this game up with very little knowledge of it and had no expectations, and it’s totally blown me away. The only negative points I can agree with are the camera movement is definitely too slow, and I did have one annoying crash after the Charlie mission. Performance has been completely fine and solid apart from that one issue, though.

Aside from those points, the game has been a total joy. Utterly unique aesthetic and game world, compelling story and addictive open playground style gameplay reminiscent of great FPS games of the past (Half Life 2, Goldeneye etc). Graphics simply aren’t “ps3 era”, some of the lighting and shadow work is exceptional (and that’s even without ray tracing), and the art direction carries it to another level.

Gunplay may not be COD style snappy and quick, but it’s not that type of game. It’s more of a sim style FPS akin to Deus Ex, Prey and obviously Dishonoured, and it’s top tier thin that genre. I think perhaps a lot of younger gamers maybe aren’t familiar with these games since they’ve gone out of style a bit, but the game does what it sets out to do very well. Yes, the AI can be stupid, but that’s part of the point of these games. It’s the same as MGS - you learn their movements and behaviours, learn your own skills and abilities and treat the game as a playground. Story is well written, compelling and hilarious. It kicks in to gear after about 5 hours or so, it’s absolutely worth sticking with it while it lays the groundwork.

Overall, my favourite true next generation game so far. A completely surprise, but a welcome one.

Deathloop has by far some of the most unique and deep level design i have ever seen. Events and accessible places change from morning, afternoon, noon and evening. One map feels like it contains several levels worth of content in it at times too.
All of the visionaries are unique and the witty banter between colt and juliana is perfect.
This game WOULD be a 10, the glitches do pull it

The story is just ok, but you don't really buy and play a roguelight time loop type of game for a story. So that is to be expected. Rather, the background lore, the characters, and the clues and information you learn about everything as you loop through each day is what makes this game great.

But take note: If you are the type of player who hates reading notes or listening to audio logs to get clues or learn objectives, and would rather just start shooting enemies - this game is NOT for you. That's not going to work well.

    PVP Multiplayer Element - 10

The PVP multiplayer is the part that makes this game interesting, and it's ignored by many reviewers. Your main character Colt will have real live players "invade" as Julianna to try to kill you. This is not "run and gun" deathmatch. This is strategy heavy slow moving game play and there's nothing like it. If you want or expect matches like Call of Duty this isn't it. You can't play it like that or you will die. Better aim or faster reflexes alone won't win, you have to outsmart your opponent. There are complaints on line about lag, but it's not the game's fault. Since it's peer to peer a good match requires good connections on both ends. When that happens you have a good lag free game.

If I were to look at this game as single player only I would give it a solid 8. But with the multiplayer PVP element it's something special. Not perfect or "IGN 10/10" by any means but a real 9/10. When you finish the single player campaign, which is greatly extended and increased in difficulty if online is turned on allowing human invaders to challenge you, finish the game and become an invader yourself and enter other people's games. There is a reward system with weapons, mods and outfits to encourage you to keep playing.

All in all a very unique and fun game. There's nothing like it really. It's not a reskinned Dishonored at all Arkane really came up with something new this time around.

The game can be played a few different ways. If you'd like to use Colt's powers and blow through a level like you're playing Doom, you can. If you want to treat the game like a stealth sandbox a kin to MGS, you can also do that. Colt is very customizable, and you will be able to switch back and forth very easily at different points in the game to fit your needs.

The art style and music are great, and help to create a unique atmosphere around the game.

The game's progression is also very rewarding, borrowing elements from the game's rogue-like peers, while still being a mostly narrative based game. The game has some metroid-vania like elements, and does a great job playing with the idea of the loop bringing Colt back every day.

The gunplay won't blow your mind, but it's much better than the game's main contemporary on next-gen, Hitman 3.

I gave the game a 9, since I really enjoyed the 20 hours I put into it. The pacing is good, the art style is unique, and Blackreef is a solid sandbox.

Overall great game! Finally, a game which makes something different and has a new and great concept. The timeloop mechanics mixed with the story is very interesting. The gameplay works good as well. The game is not too long which is nice as every hour is fun and doesn't feel like work (like e.g. some Ubisoft games). Can totally recommend!

I love this game. I started playing it with no expectations. In fact, the only reason I got it is because we have very few PS5 games available these days and I really wanted to make sure I tried something that was meant to run on this beautiful dust collector I got for myself almost a year ago.

And oh boy am I glad I bought Deathloop. First of all the game feels original to me.

In fact, the only reason I got it is because we have very few PS5 games available these days and I really wanted to make sure I tried something that was meant to run on this beautiful dust collector I got for myself almost a year ago.

And oh boy am I glad I bought Deathloop.

First of all the game feels original to me. People here keep talking about Dishonoured, but I never played that game so I had nothing to compare it to. Some have even brought up Hitman as a possible source of inspiration for the game, but I don't really see the similarities. I have been a Hitman fan for years and I just don't see it. Deathloop seems a lot more interested in telling a story, something Hitman gave up on a long time ago. Gameplay is also drastically different here.

Something else I liked about Deathloop is its aesthetics. The world is simply gorgeous. It reminded me of this game I played ages ago called XIII which had this comic book look and style to it. I played the game in Performance mode, which was great. The ray tracing option is fantastic as well, but framerate drops to 30 which bothered me since I quickly got used to 60 fps in Performance mode.

The story is great, the side missions are unique and original (though their rewards don't match the effort you put in to get through them), and the gunplay is just phenomenal. The DualSense really made the experience special for me, and my only complain is that I wish they had put together a larger arsenal. Come on, the over-the-top gameplay and gun battles is screaming for crazier options (i.e. flamethrower, meat grinder, bazooka, etc.).

I'm now trying my hand at the multiplayer and I really hope people will get into it because I'm having a blast. Playing Julianna and stalking Colt is really a lot of fun.

I will end by sharing my biggest complain with the game (and the reason I can't give it a 10) which is the fact that the game often crashes on me, to the point where it can get very annoying. This new trend that has games being released half broken is starting to bother me and I would have given Deathloop a 5 if I hadn't had as much fun as I did.

Again. A great game. In my opinion, a must-buy for PS5 players.

Deathloop dares to do something new and in an age where yearly sports games are often top sellers, it’s no surprise that many people don’t like the break from ‘generic first person shooter’ that their used to in most triple a games. The a.I. Is a little lacking but the graphics, while not perfect are far from outdated, they’re styled in a way that gives the game a fantastic aesthetic. The gunplay is better than that of dishonoured, it could be a little more rounded but I quite enjoyed the slight clunky feel to the weapons, considering their mostly high power, close range weapons. the game reveals its hand a little to fast at the beginning and clears some of the major mysteries too fast, that being said there was plenty to keep the plot rolling till the end.

Many of the people playing this game are unaware that half the game is exploration and learning. Your not buying a shoot’em’up when you buy deathloop, the mass murder is only half the game. The other half is sneaking around, manipulating your targets, lining them up to be in the same areas at once, and preparing for your murder charge. You have to be willing to enjoy and embrace the exploration as its a requirement to reach the more satisfying battles when you got 3 targets in the same building at once, (For example). If the flashy gunplay in the trauilers was what brought you here than your gonna need to get used to the other side. Don’t be mistaken, the exploring and learning isn’t a drag, its quite fun, as is most sneaking around in any arcane game. But if your gonna hate every second of it don’t bother.

one refreshing thing about deathloop is putting its trust in the player. There are no difficulty options, and you will find some parts a breeze, and others painfullly irritating. If you keep dying against the same visionary over and over again, that’s the game telling you that you need to let that one go for now and bet better knowledge, gear or tactics. Not many games will let you throw yourself at a hurdle, knowing your not gonna get over it. If something is too hard, then you need to work around it, put the target somewhere else, come back at a different time of day, try a different approach, try being sneaky. The game wont tell you this, you just have to have the brain cells to figure it out. yourself.

Deathloop is great, fantastic even. its not without minor flaws but they were never enough to keep me even remotely held up on them. frankly this game doesn’t quite exist anywhere else and i recommend giving it a shot. But remember its and arcane game, not an activision, gearbox or blizzard game, know what your buying and whether you’ll enjoy it. once your past the start you have to figure **** out yourself, and the fact that the game puts any trust in the players ability to think instantly sets it apart from the herd.

note: the game is a little more linear than you would expect. you’ll often go into an area with an objective. While in the area you can in fact do anything you want, but you’ll often stay on track for the objective you set yourself. This doesn’t take away from the game though, in fact i believe it strengthens it.

Deathloop offers well-designed stealth levels under the core gameplay of Roguelike. At the same time, the variety of weapons and special powers also support the exciting combat. Julianna's "invasion" adds the uncertainty of the game, but may also spoil the player's experience.

I’m honestly surprised, because I did not expect to have so much fun with Deathloop. It draws some gameplay ideas from Dishonored, but introduces time-related mechanics, offers an intriguing story with interesting characters and has its own unique and coherent style. It’s an original game, full of surprises and addictive, but not necessarily easily digestible for everyone. For me however it’s one of the best titles of 2021. [11/2021, p.22]
