The game is quite challenging, as it follows a Dark Souls checkpoint-based progression system and lacks difficulty options (aside from assist options). Some sequences can feel frustratingly difficult and repetitive. Alongside this frustration is an obscure map design that makes navigation a chore.

The major downfall of this game is it’s storytelling. Whilst the lore of the supernatural world they have created is fascinating and well presented, the main character delivers countless inner-monologues that provide unnecessary expositions. These only serve to ruin the tension of the story and lead to countless eye-rolls. After trudging through Jesse Faden’s clumsy writing and delivery, hoping for an interesting endgame narrative reveal/twist, I was instead severely underwhelmed by its mediocrity.

Overall, a very enjoyable gameplay experience that shows off the fancy next-gen tech, however if you’re looking for a quality narrative experience, this isn’t it.

Honestly I get a head ache every time I have to find a location in for a simple mission. I literally spend more time figuring out how to find a mission than actually doing the mission, and in the end to just speed things up I just go on google or youtube to watch a map guide. If players are going on google to figure understand your map you failed as a developer. If it's not a puzzle or a hard boss, a player should not be on google looking for answers. You fail as a developer when ever a player is stuck not because of an amazing puzzle or a hard boss, but because of poor design choices and lazy execution. The goal of gaming is to have your hands on the controller, not on a keyboard looking up google answers. If the map itself was intentionally a puzzle I think it would have felt like that, but in reality the map itself is an unintentional hinderance to the game and the experience.

I've been gaming for a long time, and I think the map in Control is probably the worst map I've ever played with in a modern game. I kind of wish they never put it in, at least that way I could have conditioned myself to just use the building signs to find my way. Sadly it's too late and the bad taste of this game has ruined the experience for me. They shouldn't have put the map in if they were going to be lazy about it.

I wanted to get platinum on this and it has an easy trophy collection but I just don't think it's worth the headache. Not enough variety with monsters and the bosses either and this makes it super repetitive. The repetition of gameplay wouldn't be an issue if the momentum and rhythm in the story wasn't so affected by its horrible mapping system. IT feels like a train that never reaches full speed.

If they make Control 2, I'll definitely be interested because it has potential. Hopefully they don't put in a map next time and think of something more creative.

In saying this, the base PS4 console really struggled to keep a solid performance. The game would dip consistently to roughly 23 - 30 frames and have this horrible stutter effect that would seriously break the immersion/mystery of the setting.

this next gen version of the game makes it seriously worth playing through again. Smooth 60 fps performance and also ray-tracing mode for extra graphical enhancements. It makes the kinetic movement and fast-past hard shooting action loop of the game much more enjoyable.

the actual narrative is weak (technically) but the setting is so captivating and oppressive. It truly is quite unique.

This is currently Free for PS+ members. I would highly suggest getting it now. Controversially I bought control when it first game out and was initially salty that I would have to purchase the game again for a Next Gen upgrade (it's absolute **** honestly?) This *for myself* is a nice mild ground however.

Hopefully they do eventually give people a free update and not force you to buy this Ultimate Edition.

despite this, I really love control. I am loving going back and playing through the game again. I would Highly recommend getting it on PS+

Control is a game developed by Remedy, of Max Payne and Alan Wake fame. At its core it's a 3rd person shooter with sci-fi/paranormal elements, but the story itself is lacking.

You take control of Jesse Faden, a woman who enters the premises of the FBC, an agency where paranormal things happen, and is appointed as Director not even 1 hour after she entered the building for the first time. You are introduced to several characters, and there is some decent world building with the Hiss and whatnot, but the central plot is unimaginative to say the least. It's almost as if it was an afterthought. Jesse Faden is one of the least inspiring protagonists I have seen in a videogame in recent times.

Graphics are great, even though the art style is not very much to my liking. This game was heralded as having the most advanced Ray Tracing graphics when it launched on PC back in 2019, but the PS4 version was 5hit with lots of sub-30 fps gameplay. The PS5 version of the game is a step above the last gen one, and gamers have the option to select at any time between 60 fps without RT or 30 fps with RT, both modes at 1440p. I went with the 60 fps mode because the 30 fps mode seems to be jerky with bad frame pacing. Also loading times are greatly reduced. Beyond the technicalities, I have to say that the maps are horribly designed, the minimap is a mess, but at least the directional signs on the walls actually helped me understand where I am and where I have to go.

Gameplay is a standard 3rd person shooter, but the star of the show are the superpowers of Jesse. You can launch any object near you at an enemy while waiting for your weapon ammo to regenerate, you can levitate, mind control enemies, and a few more tricks. The environments are littered with destructible objects flying around when you use your powers. Surely it's a spectacle. The boss fights are nothing great design-wise, but at least they can be challenging when accompanied by mobs. There are a few puzzles every now and then. And the game supports the Dualsense controller's haptics and adaptive triggers in a subtle way.

Sound is minimal on traversal, but during fights the score picks up nicely. I recommend playing with headphones, because the game's atmosphere demands it.

Last but not least, I wanna praise the PS5's UI feature called Activities. For every mission there is a card containing 3 pages of information and clues. So if you are stuck somewhere you can open Activities and read the information or watch a video (there are 3 videos for every mission). You can find even the solutions for the puzzles if you can't figure them out. It's a brilliant alternative to opening your phone or PC and searching for walkthroughs online.

All in all, Control Ultimate Edition is a great remaster of a good game packaged with both DLCs. I got it for free with PS Plus, and although it's no GOTY I enjoyed it enough to recommend it.

Do you like the colour red? How about one-dimensional combat and endless office environments? Well buckle-up, as Control is still not the game for you. I am perplexed at how a shiny crimson gloss has subverted proper scrutiny of this very dated game.

One of the selling points of Control is graphics. I only played on performance mode and the 60fps did largely hold up, so credit where it's due. However, there's not much else positive about the graphics. The awful level design means you're going to be seeing a lot of repetition. The majority of the game plays like an office simulator with endless clinical corridors. It's a nice touch that the environment is quite destructive, but this is a one-dimensional gimmick that wears off its novelty fairly quickly.

As I mentioned above, when environments are not bland or dark, they are nauseatingly red. This is to indicate the presence of 'The Hiss' similar to corruption seen in HZD. Used sparingly this could have been great, however in its abundance it becomes irritating as it also makes enemies and traversal more difficult to navigate. Having said that, the PS5 is clearly what Control's graphics were designed for, not the PS4.

The gameplay of Control grinded my gears quite a bit. The first thing that flabbergasted me was the map and level design. This is bewilderingly awful. The map is an incoherent mess; it's incompletely labelled and despite being messy still isn't detailed enough to tell me where I'm going or how to get there.

This is where the level design has earned great scorn from me. The levels are simply far too vast, repetitive and empty. This is much more prescient in the early hours, as the game starts going outside the box in the final stages but is too little to late by this point. The game is a cross between an office and a factory, with some supernatural elements thrown in. Prepare for long, meandering levels where you fight the same enemies and complete basically the same tasks for 70% of the game.

However, the cardinal sin for me is that the layout of the game is so bad that mission instructions that are also vague left me wondering where the hell I was meant to go or how to get there. I resorted to online guides so many times; sometimes my own cluelessness, however mostly due to the bad level design. Some people say they enjoy the blind exploration however I do not enjoy having my time wasted like that when exploration provides scant rewards.

I will say one bittersweetly positive thing about Control's gameplay, and that is the accessibility options. Without these there is no way I would have completed level 3, never mind the main game. Immortality and one-shot kills were essential for me to get through the bad and repetitive game design to see if there was anything actually rewarding about it.

The final levels do start thinking outside the box, but as mentioned above there was no likelihood of me getting that far, making me think developers themselves were aware of the game's limitations. Kudos to them for accessibility, but it only highlighted to me the bad game design.

Another of Control's selling points is the telekinetic powers. Whilst these are very fun at first, the aforementioned repetition really sets in quickly and one-shot kills are far more helpful and faster. People seem to laud the psychic powers but it's not exactly ground-breaking or new.

When it comes to the story, I think they seriously screwed up here as well. Prioritising atmosphere, mystery and ambience really backfired for me. It led to serious pacing issues, as a good 50% of the game you're hearing random diatribes with little meaning. Then in the final levels everything is thrown at you but by this point I was skipping cut-scenes out of boredom. Had the game been better paced and less obsessed with being an X-Files-Resident Evil Sci-Fi combo I would have enjoyed the story. I think the story pacing could have held up had the rest of the game been enjoyable, but as you can see I didn't enjoy any aspect of the game.

Overall, the only control necessary here was my controlling my patience with this game. The critical acclaim it has gathered makes me think it just isn't to my tastes or there isn't enough critique or scrutiny in games. One final thing I'd like to highlight is a worrying trend that we're seeing a lot of upgraded PS4 games appearing on PS5 when I would much rather have some fresh innovation appropriate for what we call "next-gen".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Control has an interesting setting, nice visuals (the ray tracing is quite nice), an interesting vibe and the environment is destructible but no depth. I really wanted to like this game, glad I didn’t buy it at launch would have been a waste of money. The story is contrived and mysterious for the sake of being mysterious the writing is lazy and obtuse and the main missions amount to a flurry of fetch quests. The main protagonist is bland and the voice actors phoned it in for the most part, the inner monologue is really uninspired (dialog? - she seems to have a voice in her head that you can’t hear and only are aware of it because of some visual cues, it seems Remedy spent their money on cheesy live action footage and didn’t have enough for one more voice actor, hell they could have used the same actor with some filters on her voice) and the supporting cast is just there, doing nothing and blurting exposition - mind you badly written one.

The premise is stupid, this girl becomes the Director of a Federal organisation because a gun apparently chose her?? what the actual hell?!

The combat is probably the worst offender, no scratch that, the level design is probably even worse oh I seem to forget the minimap, worst UI ever. I’m sorry about Remedy, they made Max Payne, but they should have called it a day there and move one, instead we got Alan Wake (which is an highly overrated title) Quantum Break and Control. All in all there are some side quest which have interesting bosses but it seems that they couldn’t even balance the game right since the spikes in difficulty are just obnoxious. For the most part it is a power fantasy, except for like 3 boss fights that are annoyingly hard and seem to be that way for padding.

The story is badly written, leaving a lot of loose ends that beg for closure but are just left hanging, I have a feeling the writers wrote themselves into a corner and didn’t have the common sense to admit they screwed it up and just left it there, the ending is bad, like really bad.

I cannot recommend this game and I’m surprised Remedy still exists as a game studio.

Many of the surfaces look like they've been painted with metallic glitter paint! this occurs all over the game in large areas and just looks awful, the same can be said for the character models which all look rather disturbing, with wonky eyes and janky facial animations. Graphically it looks like nothing has actually been done to the new version at all. The only difference i could find was that the game does run significantly better in 60fps mode, but aside from that it feels like the same game it was before, with none of the graphical issues fixed. The fact that Remedy expected people to pay again for this so called upgrade, is laughable. Actually lowered my score even further since being reminded of the sh*tty save system, or lack thereof. dying multiple times and having to run halfway across the map to get back to where you were just makes for a complete lack of any fun and is really fu*king annoying. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story - It’s confusing and uninteresting. I’ve read beginning of everything I picked up until quarter of the game and I just don’t bother reading them anymore. There’s literally zero characters development if you expect them to show you on cutscenes. Half way through the game I just don’t bother anymore and just rush through the mediocre gameplay. Graphic - It’s okay, don’t expect any “wow” scenes. You’ll see only office stuffs throughout the whole game. Same colors, same tables, fire extinguishers, files, computers, chairs, office furnitures basically. Nothing really fancy at all. Only thing they did well here is the physics of environment destruction. And the laziness of putting real life characters video instead of render in 3D which really turn me off. Music - This is the worst. I kinda feel like I’m listening to one music from start to the end of the game which was pretty annoying. I turned on my own Spotify while playing this game. Gameplay - it was fun beginning until I just rotate spamming two buttons R1 and R2 while watching their cool down. Main story’s enemies are dull. Side mission’s enemies are too strong and you better go back after completing the main game. The RNG drops are uninteresting. I’m limited to only two weapons at one time. What makes it worse is the weapons are sharing the same cool down which force you to have no choice to swap to only R2 for launch attack. You can hide with R3 but I didn’t use it for my entire game, it’s pretty much useless. The map is ridiculous and confusing. It sucks that I can only view the particular map floor while my character is on the same floor. It doesn’t show any signs/blockage. You can’t even put any signs of mark for your own. It should have map direction indicator for quests on stupid map unless they show better map signs. Overall, I don’t think that I’ll miss anything if I never play this game. I can just watch the entire youtube play through. Maybe you’ll like it if you favor corporate works. Expand

The writers (both of the reviews and game) should be deeply ashamed. They (the game developers) took a great concept, which they even marketed as based on SCP Foundation, and absolutely ruined it. The main character won't shut the **** up. It's maddening. She constantly narrates everything with the most inane commentary of all time. There is zero immersion because you are not the main character, some moron is. The best parts of the game are totally immolated by this. The gameplay loop is also tragically bad. Run through office space after office space shooting enemies who for some reason take your entire clip to kill, but themselves are armed with SMGs and sometimes even forcefields (that also take your whole clip to bring down). There are no difficulty settings either, except to make yourself invincible or turn on one-hitting. Which of course, ruins any tension in the fights. The dialogue is all poorly written exposition, and then followed by more inane and incredibly annoying narration by the main character. All I could think is "why won't she shut the **** up so I can have my own thoughts about what is happening." The mystery and paranormal intrigue is the only redeeming factor, but they ripped the concepts straight from SCP, which is a much much better use of your time if you enjoy that kind of fiction content, because SCP contains literally thousands of stories, and "objects of power", and this game contains maybe 5 or so. The game's best quality is that it isn't totally linear, and you can explore around and find clues and hints about the mysterious objects and events. But this is not the focus, and there isn't nearly enough of this content to justify the game's existence.

Do not buy this game. I was lucky that I got it for free from a friend and didn't waste a dime on it

Control is an awesome game. Sure it’s not perfect buy Ive only found few flaws & nothing that bothers me. Important: it took around 3.5-5 hours to figure out WTF was even going on. It was similar to a Souls game in that area. I play games slow, methodical searching everywhere, everything, reading all items, taking notes if necessary & the story is well acted & an interesting, spooky atControl is an awesome game. I play games slow, methodical searching everywhere, everything, reading all items, taking notes if necessary & the story is well acted & an interesting, spooky at times & a “thinker”. The superpowers you get feel real with proper physics & most importantly fun as hell. If you blast through the main story only you’ll miss out on some cool powers so do ALL side missions. I didn’t find anything you could miss or bypass. Do whatever missions you want. There’s main, side, “alert” & board missions. Main & side are obvious & do them as you please. Alert randomly pop up when you pick up certain items & just randomly. Board missions you choose at “save points” where you pick up to three that you constantly work on like kill X number of enemies in a certain area or with a certain weapon & other variations for a reward like a weapon modifier or character modifier.
The are takes place in a building but surprisingly it’s architecture is different on the floors & as huge as the game is, it’s fairly easy to remember. I’m finishing the second DLC. Platinum trophy main game so my opinion isn’t from a few minutes or hours of play. If being specific I’d say 8.6/10. I had the game from PSN+ subscription but I bought a new copy to support the developer & to have a physical copy. After I finish the PS5 version I plan on playing the PS4 version. Remember stick with it for a few hours before quitting. It takes time to get some powers but it’s a long game (yes, of course it doesn’t have to be). If you read the items it’ll become more clear what you need to do but the story is ongoing.

By combining elements of Neo-Noir, urban fantasy, and conspiracy theory science fiction, Remedy’s Control offers a lot for anyone looking for a piece of medium with a good dollop of old and experimental game mechanics mixed with fun combat and a great story. While the combat could use a little tweaking, there’s no denying how much the folks over at Remedy value and respect the lore and characters they’ve created. Here’s hoping the sequel improves upon this foundation and gives us something truly amazing.

My first experience with Control was underwhelming due to my base PS4 not being powerful enough to do this great game justice. Now I wish I waited for the next-gen version. The Ultimate Edition finally looks and runs as it should (however, if you want ray tracing, you’ll have to accept 30 FPS) and also offers two expansions that tie the story to Alan Wake. Control is an amazing experience that is befitting of the next gen consoles. It has killer Ray Tracing features, unfortunately hampered by their implementation, and a rock solid performance mode which feels amazing. The truly twisted dystopian world of the FBC is one that will persist in player's memories for a long time with its strange otherworldly places, alongside its humanising story. Highly recommended to all PlayStation 5 owners looking for an action-adventure with some real depth and fun combat!
