Great game! Loved the options for ray tracing grapics mode and performance mode at 60 fps. Combat is fun and innovative. My favorite part of the game is how literally every object is destructible.

From a very good game in the PS4 to a better and more immersive version in the PS5. The haptic feedback from the dualsense adds even more to the experience. While not without flaws in the story it's still one of the best sci-fi games to date.

In saying this, the base PS4 console really struggled to keep a solid performance. The game would dip consistently to roughly 23 - 30 frames and have this horrible stutter effect that would seriously break the immersion/mystery of the setting.

this next gen version of the game makes it seriously worth playing through again. Smooth 60 fps performance and also ray-tracing mode for extra graphical enhancements. It makes the kinetic movement and fast-past hard shooting action loop of the game much more enjoyable.

the actual narrative is weak (technically) but the setting is so captivating and oppressive. It truly is quite unique.

This is currently Free for PS+ members. I would highly suggest getting it now. Controversially I bought control when it first game out and was initially salty that I would have to purchase the game again for a Next Gen upgrade (it's absolute **** honestly?) This *for myself* is a nice mild ground however.

Hopefully they do eventually give people a free update and not force you to buy this Ultimate Edition.

despite this, I really love control. I am loving going back and playing through the game again. I would Highly recommend getting it on PS+

I play games slow, methodical searching everywhere, everything, reading all items, taking notes if necessary & the story is well acted & an interesting, spooky at times & a “thinker”. The superpowers you get feel real with proper physics & most importantly fun as hell. If you blast through the main story only you’ll miss out on some cool powers so do ALL side missions. I didn’t find anything you could miss or bypass. Do whatever missions you want. There’s main, side, “alert” & board missions. Main & side are obvious & do them as you please. Alert randomly pop up when you pick up certain items & just randomly. Board missions you choose at “save points” where you pick up to three that you constantly work on like kill X number of enemies in a certain area or with a certain weapon & other variations for a reward like a weapon modifier or character modifier.
The are takes place in a building but surprisingly it’s architecture is different on the floors & as huge as the game is, it’s fairly easy to remember. I’m finishing the second DLC. Platinum trophy main game so my opinion isn’t from a few minutes or hours of play. If being specific I’d say 8.6/10. I had the game from PSN+ subscription but I bought a new copy to support the developer & to have a physical copy. After I finish the PS5 version I plan on playing the PS4 version. Remember stick with it for a few hours before quitting. It takes time to get some powers but it’s a long game (yes, of course it doesn’t have to be). If you read the items it’ll become more clear what you need to do but the story is ongoing.

Better than all the rest shooters in 2019. My entire reaction to this game is hampered by the hype it received. Critics loved it. Gamers mostly ignored it. Those who did buy into it are evangelical about it. The game is a good game, interesting and fun, and deserving of accolades. The game is not the best game of 2019.

Let's start with the bad. Control clearly takes cues from games such as Destiny. Though a third person shooter, Control prioritizes dodging and movement over crouching and cover. Crouching behind cover is in fact difficult because Jesse will stand up every time you shoot. There also aren't many chest high walls like Gears of War or The Division. Also like Destiny, all enemies have levels and health bars above their heads. At least the enemies do not bleed damage numbers. Some of the level design is also reminiscent of Destiny: angular alien landscapes with bottomless pits that are easy to fall into. So you can think of Control as a single player third person Destiny without the outfits, guns, and grenades.

Not be cruel, especially since I believe Control is a legitimate 8 out of 10 fantastic must play game, but Control betrays itself with its gamified elements. Perhaps the best third person shooter of all time is Uncharted 4. That game eschewed UI elements. No levels. No health bars. The game was stunning and immersive from start to finish. Control should have done that. Be brave, developers. I do enjoy subtle nods to the player that characters are subconsciously aware they are in a game. Kojima plays with this. Destiny very heavily justifies gaming elements with in-game lore. A little goes a long way. I wonder how someone like Jesse knows what she is upgrading with upgrade points. Does she close her eyes and see in-game menus?

One last dig at Destiny and the pace of combat. Rather than present the enemy characters as part of the landscape, nigh the flow of the game, enemies are teleported into the game world in waves. I remember back in 2014 when Destiny was receiving low scores from critics, one of the main criticisms was fighting waves of enemies while Dinklebot fumbled with opening a door. Then a few years later, Doom releases to high accolates with the exact same style of gameplay: enter a room, fight waves of teleporting enemies, enter another room. When I was playing Doom and utterly let down by the gameplay, I felt like I had selected the wrong menu option. Where was the great game the critics were raving about? I feel the same about the gameplay in Control. It has a rinse and repeat feel that hurts multi-player games and is incredibly painful in a single player game.

Now the good. The look and feel of Control is some of the best in the biz. The Federal Bureau of Control is just a sublime blend of X-Files and Dharma Initiative. Every space is full of detail, much more than there needs to be. The game uses darkness well and an investment in an HDR display will be rewarded. The ray tracing is a bit gimmicky. None of the bathrooms have mirrors, which is tell tale sign the game was not designed for ray tracing. But if you do want to see the full potential of your next gen console, many surfaces are glossy and reflective.

Jesse is fully fleshed out character. Her look isn't the generic face we are used to. We get to hear her thoughts which I appreciate as a long time comic fan. Jesse reminds me a bit of Nathan Drake in Uncharted. This is good writing and voice work and games need more of this. The other characters are also well done especially in the live action video. I never played Quantum Break (even though I own an Xbox One S) so I missed out on the episodic use of live action video. As with breaking the 4th wall of gaming, a little bit of live action video goes a long way.

Some of the gameplay even went right. Jesse can telekinetically pick up and throw objects, like the gravity gun in Half Life 2. In reviewing Half Life 2, I said the gravity gun doesn't work for combat because the object blocks your vision and doesn't do enough damage. In Control, you hold object to the side, they do a lot of damage, and if you run out of objects, you can break off chunks of concrete. We've come a long way in 20 years.

So all in all, I think Control is on the high side of an 8/10, maybe an 8.5. The setting is perfection and the characterization is fascinating. The gameplay is a bit stale and draws inspiration from bad source material. Full disclosure: even though this was a PlayStation Plus "free" game, I had already bought the Ultimate Edition for $20 and waited for the PS5 release. Maybe I was a little sore about that. Maybe traversing an underground base isn't as exciting anymore after spending a year social distancing. Maybe Control simple isn't as good as many critics said it was. Maybe I'm just old and tired of the same gameplay over and over.

Nice game and too fast and paced! His gameplay is awesome (best part of it) with a lot of ways to fight a enemy and boss. Control story's great too (a little crazy sometimes) and anybody knows sometime that is did from Sam Lake, a game modern story-driven genius.

Its a kind of different game compared with anothers shooters games and this is the best part.

The gameplay mechanics are precise, and the combat system is thoughtfully crafted. While the map may pose some confusion, the navigation system empowers the player through a sign system that immerses them in the experience. However, the surrealistic undertone may not appeal to those who prefer a more straightforward and linear narrative.

Really enjoyed this game, I can understand the contrasting strong critic reviews with mixed used reviews, it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea...

I really enjoyed the atmosphere and story telling, unlike a lot of user reviews and unlike when I play a lot of other games, I actually enjoyed searching for and reading all of the documents you find, and appreciated the creativity and effort that was put into this kind of world building (even if a little derivative of the SCP genre).

I think the game is a slow burn, the first few hours are quite slow going and you feel underpowered and fragile, which is quite welcome actually compared to many games that are too easy. From reading some of the lower scored reviews, it seems many did not get past these first few hours or first half, which is sadly when things really pick up in terms of building Jesse’s repertoire for combat and utilising it.

I actually had a lot of fun upgrading weapons, using interesting mod combinations to create my own whacky, powerful and gorgeously exposed combat moments.

Graphically it looks great, albeit on the margins of Ps4 and Ps5-gen, and I personally really enjoy the design choices of the games environments. But then again I’m from London and appreciate Brutalist architecture, which is either loved or hated in real life, again explaining mixed reviews.

I do agree with the criticisms of the map, which was a big mistake, though I didn’t find it nearly as bad as some, still not using guides to find objectives etc. In fact I loved the exploration in this game, particularly as it is expanded as Jesse’s powers grow. Exploring every nook and cranny leads to some amazing, sometimes creepy, sometimes hilarious, sometimes both, discoveries around the Bureau. All of which were admirably hand crafted by the developers knowing full well they may not be seen by most players.

The storytelling and characters are self aware and tongue firmly in cheek with how hammy and goofy it can be, whilst still maintaining a creepy tone, and keeping the stakes high throughout. A lot of care again was put into the real life acting sections and creating a whole kids puppet show.

This is one game I will carry as a favourite of mine from the end/start to a generation, however I wouldn’t recommend to all unless it’s your jam!

But I certainly didn't expect it will turn out to be a weird, braintwisting and utterly unique masterpiece. Courtney Hopes performance als Jesse Faden (the main character) is spot on, perfect voice acting and I love Jesse as a character. The game has great story telling with humor and lots of suspense as well as masterclass world building (documents and audio recodings). Not to mention the amazing graphics and the very unique art style (reminds me of Stanley Kubrick movies with all that geometry, lighting contrasts and 60/70s interor and technology). There is clever level design, detailed decoration and realistic enviroment. The fighting system is really cool, the combination of superhuman powers and shooting with different kind of weapons mix quite fine and lead to exciting fast-paced-battles. The sourroundings react to your actions really nicely (things break, explode etc.). Overally Control has a really well made atmosphere with build up suspense, psychological horror elements and firghtening enivorments. But it manages to never get too scary, just the right amount. I really liked the insane attention to details (adding so much additional stuff like very long handwritten texts or forever ongoing voicelines add to the world immersive feeling). The ashtray maze level on its own is a gaming masterpiece, one of the best video game missions ever. The length of the game is just right, for people who really liked it Control even offers two quite good DLCs. In addition to that I have to mention the flawless programming: there is an impressive high quality of effects and physical behaviour of objects, I never encountered bugs or graphical errors. The sheer amount of documents, audio recordings etc. especially the ones that are linked together shows me Remedy really put a lot of effort and love into this game. What I have to criticize is that raytracing looks stunning on the PS5 but feels weird and too irritating since it produces a stutter and blurring when moving the camera. Another minor problem is that enemies are too repetative and mostly the same (except the mold zombies which I think feels like a nice hommage to TLOU). Fighting parts always feel the same wave style, there are no tactical aproaches and only rarely different situations - I wish for the sequel to improve in this aspect. Another improvement for a sequel could be to move the weapon form choosing to the directional buttons of the controller, this would make it possible to choose from more different weapon forms fluently. You find weapon mods and personal mods too often, they really stuff in the inventory and are mostly useless since most are weaker than the ones you already have. The translation of the documents or subtitles into german is sometimes quite poorly, I started with english audio and german texts but soon switched to both english since a lot of the humor or cleverness of the texts is lost in grammatical errors or obvious google translator mistakes. One thing that set me off was that you sometimes instant die when falling off a cliff, this ruines the game flow. Personally I think the ending felt too rushed, it would be better to leave the player a break before the final fight - I was confused and surprised to find myself in the final battle all of the sudden. Overall control is a really outstanding game. It shines with its creativity and innovative ideas. The only big flaws for me are that I personally can't use the raytracing mode because it makes me motion sick and that the enemies get too repetative after some time. Still its very uniqueness and amazing setting, story and world design make it in my opinion a 10/10 masterpiece. Expand

It was like a perfect blend of X-Files, Fringe and Stranger things. I just couldn't stop almost until the end of the story. Closer to the end I had a hard time with few bosses (especially the one from Alan Wake side quest)and almost gave up on the game, however I've decided to "cheat" with an included "1-shot-kill" option. Yep, that Alan Wake side quest really took me off the main storyline, it takes quiet a time, and afterwards I just didn't have any juice left to finish the game.
    Aside of that little flaw...
Gameplay is amazing, didnt expect so many superpowers available and that gunfight is awesome. Level design is masterpiece. Everything is so beautiful - it's a modern art.
Closer to the end felt tired of same enemies, but it didn't ruin the experience for me.
    Waiting for a sequel.

I really appreciate the creepiness and creativity. I'm about at the end (i think) and am still getting creepy chills. It's not the perfect game but for free (this month on PSN), it's an easy recommendation. The part I do not like are the interactions with the people, they all feel wooden and fake (I hope the ties into the story, for which i have no idea how it's going to end).

Do you like SCP? Are you into occult or mysticism? Did you like Alan Wake? You might want to give a chance to 2019’s Control.

The game is set in so called Remedyverse - a world where Remedy Entertainment games take place. It’s quite a new thing, and hasn’t been explored much so far. Control seems to be a big milestone in universe development, as it is heavily connected to other Remedy games – Alan Wake and Max Payne.

This time, the story is about Jesse Faden, a woman with paranormal skills and childhood trauma connected to it, who is called by some mysterious entity to go NYC and visit Federal Bureau of Control, a secret US government agency dealing with paranormal activity. When she arrives, it turns out the building is desolated, with only some people hiding in emergency shelters. This bizarre situation was caused by the Hiss – some strange power from another dimension which somehow got into “our” plane of existence and started corrupting people and environment. Jesse realizes her skills are finally useful and starts to clean up after the invasion.

The plot itself is amazing – tackling topics of unethical science, bureaucracy and abusive relationships within a world heavily inspired by SCP. The narrative doesn’t only happen through cinematics and gameplay – there is a ton of text and audio files to go through, scattered around the map. I personally love this way of worldbuilding and I spent a significant amount of time just reading Bureau’s documents which could easily be creepypastas. Remedy’s writers – well done.

The gameplay part is a bit more complicated. Control is a third person shooter with the main character being able not only to use guns but also throw items at enemies or creating a shield by using her paranormal powers. As the game progresses, you can develop certain abilities through a classic skill tree. This is all great but the game for me was… a bit too difficult?

I’m not saying that games should play themselves but Control’s main issue for me was the utterly frustrating difficulty level. It made me forget about the brilliant lore or the storyline and, honestly, I was about to quit it halfway. Saving system makes the game even harder: checkpoints are placed irregularly and you never know if you survive till the next one. If not – you start from the last checkpoint and have to go all the way back. With enemies spawning again. Often dying one minute after respawn. Such system is well explained in the lore but in general it made me hate Control at some point.

Luckily, I found a little cheat in the settings menu: the famous GOD MODE. Actually you don’t have to cheat that much (it’s possible to just decrease amount of damage Jesse is taking) but I was already too fed up with repeating things endlessly. Suddenly the game became fun! I might have done it in the right moment (around the half of the main storyline) because the game gets even more difficult as you progress. I couldn’t imagine doing some of the boss fights with the default difficulty level. Yep, it might mean I just sucked at the game but I really didn’t feel like investing my time to build the skill. Games are supposed to be fun after all, not frustrating.

The version I played was the Ultimate Edition, containing 2 DLCs – The Foundation and A.W.E. Both of them are decent expansions, adding a few hours to the game and playing a huge role in universe development (especially A.W.E.) but comparing to the main game they are just ok. Or maybe I was already tired with Control?

I must add that it was one of the most bug-free games I’ve played recently – during 20+ hours of gameplay I had one crash and really rare texture pop-ins (PS5 version).

All in all, Control is an amazing game spoilt a bit by difficulty level. Nonetheless, give it a shot, Remedyverse is totally worth it!

The destructible environment is so well-crafted with ray tracing bringing a realism to it all. The haptic feedback is subtle and I like that, such feeling her footsteps.

The gameplay is great and the whole package creates quite an immersive experience. I wish there were more games like this but Control is a unique gem and it’s really something to behold.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, the elephant in the room. I bought this game on ps4 and it was unplayable. The publishers should be ashamed of themselves for charging extra for this updated version. Luckily I hadn't bought any DLC and the ultimate edition was on sale so it could have been a lot worse.

Control is a unique game, there is so much creativity that is shown in building this unique atmosphere with beautiful yet unsettling soundscapes, a very bizarre art direction that feels like you are playing a M.C. Escher painting, and a huge sense of scale in the world. All this makes Control a unique experience just to walk through it's world. The combat is often quite brilliant. You have so many options in your movement and especially in the final chapters that used to be added DLC in the original version you have a complete blast in overcoming quite challenging combat encounters.

The games difficulty is really uneven. On certain parts you die over and over (these parts are often the most fun because you need to turn your brain on) And on some parts you are completely overpowered and you have no way of losing a fight.

There are some flaws in this game however. The acting and writing is really inconsistent. The back and forth expository dialogue between Jesse and characters that have automated animation are not very well executed. The best way to ingest this dialogue is by just reading it and not looking at it. The weird thing is that you come across live action footage of a character on television screens that are executed really well. These parts are the best part of the story of control that really builds up this unique world where the normal rules of reality in our day to day world don't apply any more.

The last complaint I have about this game is that there are some encounters that are so oversaturated with the color red that you have no idea where your enemies are and where you are supposed to shoot. They really sacrificed playability for something that look astatically pleasing. I needed to turn easy mode on for these encounters because I just couldn't get through them because it was impossible for me to know what to do because of the lack of visual clarity.

Still, this game is such a unique experience with a strong sense of identity that I still highly recommend it. The amount of methods of movement are so much fun to toy around with and now that the game is playable on 60 fps this is the version of control that is actually worth it.

Descubrí Remedy con este juego y lo jugué sin esperar nada de él, y me sorprendió gratamente, combates frenéticos y divertidos con muchas posibilidades, puzles, exploración y una historia digna del mismísimo David Lynch, una obra maestra.

This game is quite simply a masterpiece. The longer you play it, the more it pulls you into a ban that is only broken when you finish playing. You will probably not really understand the game after the first play, but it is really worth playing it again and understanding it better. One of the best shoother in recent years

You need to explore your surroundings and watch videos you'll find and read the documents lying around to have an idea of whats happening. The game doesn't tell you much in how to do things. The map is useless and I just accidentally found out how to upgrade weapons.

Its a breath of fresh air but theres a problem. This game's story is like the build up to Christmas but when the day finally comes it doesn't meet the expectations. Your 9 years of age and your expecting a PS2 but you get the N64. Not a bad system but its no PS2.

You have to remember that this is a game first and a story second. There is a sense of atmosphere though and thats just as important and it is spooky. Sometimes terrifying. I felt so confused most of the time. Whats with the hotel? Why am I the director? Whats the hiss? Why am I here? Was I always the director? Is the gun the director? Am I asking the right questions?

The problem is that you have all these questions and you expect to get some answers but your just left hanging. The character you play as is just satisfied with the outcome. She now knows the answers to the why, what, how questions but Im left with 'Huh? What'. I dont know how to describe it.

I felt like this is the sequel to another game. They just expected you to know some of the lore already but what lore. This is a new IP. But it does leave me wanting more and I can't wait to play the next one.

By combining elements of Neo-Noir, urban fantasy, and conspiracy theory science fiction, Remedy’s Control offers a lot for anyone looking for a piece of medium with a good dollop of old and experimental game mechanics mixed with fun combat and a great story. While the combat could use a little tweaking, there’s no denying how much the folks over at Remedy value and respect the lore and characters they’ve created. Here’s hoping the sequel improves upon this foundation and gives us something truly amazing.

My first experience with Control was underwhelming due to my base PS4 not being powerful enough to do this great game justice. Now I wish I waited for the next-gen version. The Ultimate Edition finally looks and runs as it should (however, if you want ray tracing, you’ll have to accept 30 FPS) and also offers two expansions that tie the story to Alan Wake. Control is an amazing experience that is befitting of the next gen consoles. It has killer Ray Tracing features, unfortunately hampered by their implementation, and a rock solid performance mode which feels amazing. The truly twisted dystopian world of the FBC is one that will persist in player's memories for a long time with its strange otherworldly places, alongside its humanising story. Highly recommended to all PlayStation 5 owners looking for an action-adventure with some real depth and fun combat!
