May 5, 2025Captain Blood looks and plays like an early 2000s Hack & Slash, for better AND worse.
-
May 5, 2025Captain Blood is such an interesting release, a true time capsule from a different era of gaming. From the static camera angles to the way it treats quick-time events, it is clear that the team was inspired by Resident Evil 4 and the PS2 God of War games during development. This simultaneously winds up being the game’s greatest selling point and its limiting factor. Beyond a novelty, it’s also just a fun swashbuckling time with plenty of action by taking full advantage of its pirate motif.
-
May 5, 2025There's definitely fun to be had in Captain Blood with its simple and frantic action that has surprisingly satisfying old-school violence. However, with irritating quick-time events, repetitive gameplay, and plenty of frustrating moments, you might want to dock this ship.

May 6, 2025Captain Blood is an odd release as it feels like a relic of its original release context. This does leave it being a nostalgic experience for those old enough to remember this era of games, but there isn’t much that isn’t done much better by its influences. Releasing decades later actually does it a favour as it feels very different to the expansive open world experiences that dominate modern gaming. As a curiosity it makes for an interesting time but it mostly confirms why such games belong in the past. Not so much buried treasure, but it's certainly better than walking the plank.
-
Jul 6, 2025Captain Blood tries to recapture the charm of the PS2's golden era, but unfortunately ends up being a rather mediocre title that misses where it should have hit the mark. There's some merit to its release, partly due to its troubled development, but if you're hoping to find a game that emanates the same energy and does justice to that era, Captain Blood is far from it.
-
May 27, 2025A game that should have released 20 years ago, Captain Blood is a generic hack-and-slash that does little to innovate. That said, it certainly has its charms, and there is some fun to be had.
-
Jun 2, 2025There are faint glimpses at what could have been in the ship combat sections and the breezy narrative, and the short runtime does help mask some of the frustrations that plague the experience, but on the whole, it’s difficult to argue that Captain Blood wouldn’t have been better left in the depths it was salvaged from.
-
May 20, 2025Captain Blood feels like discovering a long-lost game from the early PS3 or Xbox 360 era. The problem is, even if it had launched back then, it would have been mediocre at best. Released now, its flaws are only magnified, offering dated visuals, archaic level design, lackluster combat, and an overall quality that falls far short of modern standards.
-
May 6, 2025After two decades in development hell, Captain Blood has finally seen light of day — but it probably shouldn't have. Its controls and gameplay are rooted in the past, but its problems stretch far beyond feeling a little old-fashioned.
-
May 19, 2025If we rewind the clock 25 years, Captain Blood might have stood out as one of the more entertaining games of the year 2000. But in 2025, it feels entirely outdated. There are tons of brutal action going on in the game, and that's about it. Every idea it brings to the table has been explored and surpassed long ago, leaving little reason to revisit this relic of the past.
-
May 16, 2025Captain Blood is an action adventure game that fails in its attempt of vindication after already struggling to stay above water. It doesn’t do anything new, exciting, or fun being released in this modern era of gaming and even it’s archaic style and influential takeaways can’t keep it afloat with issues such as audio inconsistencies, bland level structure, vexing enemy A.I., graphical hiccups, and pure negligible combat and upgrade systems. Captain Blood should have been a great comeback story, but has sadly been released with no substance, style, or grace.
-
May 5, 2025If you have a burning nostalgia for early 2000s action titles, you might be able to squeeze some semblance of enjoyment from Captain Blood, but even then, you've got to wade through tedious, weightless combat and bafflingly overlooked audio issues.
