Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian truly is the definition of a mixed bag. An uneven story led by two vastly differing protagonists fails to deliver a memorable tale and outstays its welcome for far too long. Bad visuals affect the delivery of the narrative but thankfully a strong combat system helps keep this title afloat. The beautiful art style and gorgeous soundtrack save this game from being a true disappointment. Far too many repurposed assets from the previous mobile game make an appearance, making this game feel like an update rather than a brand new title. Hopefully this storied franchise can weather the storm!

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is enjoyable enough, without ever reaching for the upper echelons of the RPG genre. I do wish the developers had given us a little bit more of a challenge in terms of gameplay and a storyline that's a little more grounded.

Strong protagonists, accessible combat, and a colorful presentation make it engaging for both newcomers and veterans. Cameos from familiar alchemists add nostalgia, though the shop mechanic feels underused. Despite minor shortcomings, it’s a cozy and well-crafted addition to the Atelier series.

I’ve come to really dig Atelier over the years after kind of avoiding them for a long time (time limits stress me out, I’ll be honest), so much so that I’ve imported the physical trilogy carts for Nintendo Switch and even pre-ordered the special edition for Ryza 2 back when I had the means to do so. I say that to emphasize the weight of my words when I state how much of a step backwards on the series’ evolutionary trajectory this experience feels like. Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian looks and feels cheap (I hate to go there, but it’s unavoidable) to play, and is full of what feel like kitbashed structural systems clumsily molded into a single player game that suffers from its connection to a failed gacha joint. It bums me out to say it, but that’s the vibe.
