Amerzone is a game that truly deserved a remake—both to reintroduce Benoît Sokal’s stunning art and imagination to a new generation, and to let longtime fans experience its beauty in an entirely new light. With updated visuals, enhanced gameplay, and new features, this remake isn’t just a nostalgic revisit—it’s a must-play, even for those who completed the original.

We live in an era where games that have puzzles need to lead players by the nose to their solution, for fear of the player getting stuck and giving up. Anything that truly challenges the player is anathema to modern design best practice. That’s why Amerzone is such a rare treat. It looks the part of a modern game, tells an exceptional story with a page-turning quality that only one of history’s finest comic book artists could achieve, and is willing to throw some genuine puzzles at the player. If you’ve got the resolve for it, then you’re in for a ride with this one.

Amerzone from developer Microids Studio Paris is a Myst-like experience that features a heavy narrative, great characters, and incredibly challenging puzzles. It may not be for everyone, but those who want this type of gaming experience will certainly be thrilled with the delivery.

Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy is a remake with real heart, showcasing the care and passion put into revitalizing this classic. Far from a cash grab, it’s a project aimed at polishing a forgotten gem, giving it a new life while preserving its original charm. This is the kind of remake that will resonate with both veteran players who fondly remember the original and newcomers discovering its adventure for the first time. I can’t recommend this game highly enough. It’s a shining example of classic adventure games, perfectly blending exploration with creative problem-solving. A true stroll down memory lane, Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy offers beautiful visuals and modernized gameplay mechanics that enhance the experience without losing its nostalgic charm.

The 2025 remake of Amerzone – The Explorer’s Legacy is a worthwhile journey whether you’re returning to its familiar rivers and jungles, or if it’s your first time strapping into a Hydrafloat. You will best enjoy it if you take your time and let it sweep you into the well-thought-out pace retained from the original game’s designer, the late Benoît Sokal, who passed away in 2021. From intro to credits, it is an unabashedly classic adventure.

No, it’s not just a “nostalgia effect”: Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy was a great game, and the careful work by Microids to make it enjoyable again after 25 long years allows us players to experience a great adventure once more, while also paying a fitting tribute to an unforgettable genius like Benoît Sokal. A classic point-and-click adventure with a captivating atmosphere and intriguing situations, Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy improves in every aspect: length, technical impact, and even the number and quality of puzzles, all while offering a more user-friendly gameplay experience. It might not be very difficult, and its longevity isn’t the best—not to mention the inability to change the diary font—but Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy is not just a revival of an old title. It’s a remake that deserves to be played by both new and veteran gaming explorers.

Amerzone – The Explorer’s Legacy offers a nostalgic and immersive experience. Despite some technical shortcomings and a lack of significant innovation, the game remains a visual and narrative gem. It's highly recommended for new players and fans of narrative-driven puzzle games. However, seasoned players familiar with the original might expect a bit more innovation.

Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy is a very good remake of an already well regarded puzzle game. While the story is a little predictable, it looks very good, the puzzles are well designed, and the environmental story telling is well constructed.

Following in the footsteps of Myst and Riven, this remake of The Amerzone: The Explorer's Testament proves that the genre can adapt to today's expectations. With its sumptuous graphics and Jules Verne-esque universe, the story imagined by Benoît Sokal is enhanced by an approach that manages to modernize the formula without betraying the original. A successful immersion thanks to the quality French voices, the music of Inon Zur and his son, and a fluid and interesting progression. A masterstroke for the Parisian studio of Microids.

Developer Microids Studio Paris took a well-written story and a well-made game (for 1999) and completely reimagined it for 2025. Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy shows that they dove into the PS5 hardware with both feet and utilized haptics with the controller, as well as utilizing the adaptive triggers in several different areas. They recreated some of the original puzzles while creating a bunch of new puzzles that may test your overall IQ.

Although it's relatively short, Amerzone - The Explorer's Legacy is an engaging adventure with an interesting story; making it worth the effort to power the Hydrafloat along the river and save a dying species.

The remake offers a captivating atmosphere and strong narrative with beautiful, detailed environments and improved character models, but its puzzles remain quite simple and the performance suffers occasional frame drops on consoles. Overall, it is a faithful update that will appeal to adventure fans new to the game despite some technical shortcomings.

Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy might be the strangest gaming experience I’ve had in a long time. This is a remake of a 1999 first-person point-and-click adventure, and while it vastly improved the visuals of the entire experience, the controls are still stuck in the past.

Twenty-six years after its initial release, L’Amerzone returns in a modernized, ambitious, and respectful version of Benoît Sokal’s original work. Microids Studio Paris delivers a remake that, despite technical limitations and dated gameplay, manages to preserve the soul of the original game. This 2025 version is primarily aimed at nostalgic players and fans of contemplative adventure, but it may leave those seeking modernity or a faster pace feeling unmoved. The respect for the source material, the quality of the art direction, and the unique atmosphere of the world make The Explorer’s Testament a valuable, almost museum-like offering—one whose strength lies in its fidelity and melancholic tone. It’s unfortunate, however, that the gameplay didn’t receive a proper overhaul to match the visual ambitions, and that the illusion of freedom promised by the trailers is shattered within the game’s opening moments. Still, L’Amerzone remains a beautiful journey to experience—provided you’re willing to slow down, observe, and immerse yourself.

As remakes go, Amerzone: The Explorer's Legacy refines the visuals and operates at a steady pace whilst maintaining the old point-and-click ethos. The puzzles follow a sensible logic and there's enough hints on offer to prevent getting stuck. At times, it can look unpolished and player movement can feel antiquated, but I enjoyed playing through this. I really like how the narrative slowly unravels as you uncover more clues. That methodical approach really shines.

Even though it maintains some of the original's inconsistencies, Amerzone - The Explorer's Legacy proves to be a remake that knows how to appropriate updated aesthetic and gameplay concepts very well without losing the essence of an old-school point-and-click experience, valuing its great investigative narrative that certainly deserves a new chance to shine.

Amerzone – The Explorer’s Legacy revamps a classic adventure that’s great fun for puzzle fans who enjoy scouring the environment for clues. It’s easy to get lost in the wonder of Amerzone without feeling too frustrated. However, the experience also brings some flaws from the past that haven’t translated well to the modern gaming environment. This makes the game great for a blast from the past, but a tough recommendation for modern puzzle players.

Amerzone: The Explorer's Legacy works as a resurrection of a cult game, with a completely revamped and up-to-date technical section that, nevertheless, cannot completely hide its enormous simplicity.
