A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is a great horror game in a vacuum, but it is held back by trying to double as a quasi-adaptation. The brilliant mechanics and environment can distract you from its shortcomings most of the time, but it periodically reminds you that this could have been so much more. The foundations are well laid out though, and if Stormind can improve the storytelling and optimization, any sequel to this would earn an easy 9/10 rating.

The few variations on the theme throughout the adventure force the player into an extremely compassed pace and a really high dose of patience, so it would have served the game better to have been able to have many more contrivances within it than have been seen in the films.

Sound, and it's absence, are the core of this game, for better and for worse. While some may drown in the quiet from the tedious pace, others will adore the serenity of its methodical nature and immense respect for the source material. Personally, I've never felt more on edge opening a door like I have playing this, and that's my screaming whisper of a compliment for it.

The game does a fantastic job of immersing you in this terrifying and deadly world, especially with the live mic feature that captures your audio as you play, which can alert the creatures. There's a fantastic set of features and foundation here that we'd love to see built upon in a sequel, as the A Quiet Place franchise is a great fit with games.

Ultimately, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is everything you’d expect of a game based on the popular film franchise. And if you’re big on stealth or simply don’t mind slow-paced experiences, you might get a real kick out of playing it. For most, though, feelings of tedium, repetition and frustration are likely to creep in pretty quickly, and with little to keep the adventure feeling fresh or unpredictable as you progress, it simply becomes a slog.

As far as movie adaptations go, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is a decent effort. It captures the atmosphere of the films, and translates the necessity of silence effectively. However, the main gameplay mechanics feel one-note and even with its short runtime, it struggles to avoid repetitiveness, particularly in its final hours.

For better or worse, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead sticks firmly to the path laid out by the movies. The bloodthirsty Death Angels are terrifying menaces that force the player to make as little noise as possible, giving the early levels a creeping intensity. With developers not wanting to expand the lore or play around new threats, your slow walk to salvation quickly runs out of road.

While the story is forgettable and the gameplay can get repetitive, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is a surprisingly nice treat for fans of the franchise. It doesn't reinvent the wheel for horror games when it comes to the hide-and-seek genre, but it does have some nice mechanics. Playing with your mic on has its merits and challenges, and the game does try to keep you interested as Alex faces new areas and challenges. Avoiding the full AAA price point was a smart move for the game - for the $30 price tag, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead has just enough to charm.

When the game makes you feel like you’re in the world of A Quiet Place being pursued by Death Angels, The Road Ahead is an immersive and tense time. It’s just a shame that the game’s mechanics and its 8–10-hour journey ultimately come at a cost to the tension and overall experience. As a result, fans of the franchise and the first-person horror genre will likely find more to like here than most, even with its budget price tag.

It’s altogether too authentic to the rules of the film but despite its slow-motion gameplay and contrived scenarios it’s hard to imagine a better Quiet Place video game than this.

Although the journey felt a little too tiring towards the end and the game does not really engage with new game elements and fairly simple game mechanics, I still have to conclude by saying that I had quite a lot of fun all the way throughout. It would have taken quite a bit of polish to make this a masterpiece, but I still have to say that despite the modest score, it's a bit of a surprise of the year for me. Sure, in retrospect, it's one of those gaming experiences that I will hardly think back on, but I still had a surprisingly fun time during this journey.
