WindJammers 2

Windjammers 2 is a complete blast that excels in the same way that the original 1994 neo geo title did and with the local and online modes it really is an easy recommendation for fun pick-up-and-play evenings with others, but there are just a few niggling gameplay issues that prevent this from fulfilling its full potential.

Windjammers 2 is both a homage to arcade games of old times and a great follow-up, modern and still as demanding as its predecessor.

Dotemu has created a nostalgic slice of competitive sporting excellence with Windjammers 2. It might only offer a handful of modes, but its wide roster of characters, tight controls, and admirable dedication to what came before it meant I was entranced the moment I picked up a disc and hurled it into the air. This is one of the finest local multiplayer games in recent memory that is easy to learn yet devilishly hard to master. It’s also very sexy.

Windjammers 2 is a more than worthy successor to the classic, which knows how to keep the experience intact 25 years later. Much like what Dotemu did with Streets of Rage 4, Windjammers 2 takes the great gameplay of the original and improves it, with more possibilities and depth, but in a way that still feels classic.

Windjammers 2 is a fast and fun arcade style game that fans of the original and competitive vs games will enjoy. But the game is very light on single player content, so unless you want to play against others online or with friends, you probably won't get much out of the light arcade mode.

Windjammers 2 is a welcome modern interpretation of a timeless classic. It may not reinvent the wheel, but thanks to stylistic visuals and some new gameplay systems, this is a game you’re going to want to add to your multiplayer rotation, even if you happen to be still playing the original Windjammers.

Windjammers 2 is the logical continuation of the episode released in 1994: new characters, new mechanics and online ranked games, it comes out with all the advantages expected of such a title in 2022. in easy hand does not close the door to neophytes while the added moves constitute an additional strategic layer for amateurs of high level game. That said, it must be recognized that the title of Dotemu is sorely lacking in content and that it will hardly hook solo players in the long term.

DotEmu does it again with Windjammers 2, an arcade experience in his purest form. While the game is dynamic and works great online thanks to rollback netcode, the lack of content, modes to play or progression can discourage newer players that expect modern elements.

It keeps all the ingredients of the original game while updating them to create a more complete, spectacular sequel. Even so, we miss more content and a more forgiving enemy AI. Go for the multiplayer, that's where the real fun in.

Windjammers 2 is shallow, but it’s fun – unless you’re playing alone, then things get old fast. Stick to human opponents though, and you’ll definitely give a disc toss. [Issue#11, p.84]

Windjammers 2 is a great update to a nostalgic arcade wonder that many will welcome with open arms, just like they would a frisbee. Definitely take this one for a spin if you love air hockey-style games but crave that bit of extra button mashing. The characters, arenas, and soundtrack all hit the mark brilliantly. It’s not an easy game to master, allowing dedicated fans to hone their skills and improve. There’s a missed opportunity for better tutorialisation and a lack of a structured tournament/career mode is disappointing, though the game overall still feels like a nostalgic romp.

Existing fans of the Windjammers series will absolutely love Windjammers 2 – no doubt about it. Newcomers willing to put the effort in to learn its mechanics will find a lot to enjoy, too. It’s just a shame that its single-player offerings are so slight, and the AI isn’t much fun to go up against. Multiplayer is the highlight here, and if you do plan on playing against friends, family and/or strangers, you’ll get way more than your money’s worth.

Windjammers 2 feels more like a callback and reimagining of a classic for veterans and returning fans of the brand. It doesn’t feel wholly inclusive of new players, and how much gameplay and entertainment you get from it will be entirely dependent on you. On the other hand, it’s an easy game to jump into once you know what you’re doing, and the artistic values are complimented so well by its soundtrack. Windjammers 2 isn’t a must-own game, but one you will have fun with.

Windjammers 2 is a fine evolution of a formula that's only become more beloved over time. The action's intense, the online's excellent, and the new characters, skills, and levels build well upon the foundation of the original. It's a wonderful competitive experience, but a lack of guidance for new players and a serious dearth of single-player content will turn some folks off of what should be a triumphant comeback. If you're planning on being a flying disc jockey, you'd better make sure you're prepared to fight online.
