    A remarkable and memorable experience. It distinguishes itself from other narrative- focused game by actually allowing the player to explore, and having unique gameplay in each chapter. This creates the feeling, not of a game that wishes it were a film, but of a game reveling in being a game. Highly recommended.

    I played this with my wife and I guess pretended to enjoy it for her sake but really, found it boring and just wanted it to end. In saying that, the story is nice (in a tragic kind of way) but the gameplay, while creative & unorthodox, just had me playing through it for the sake of it, without finding it fun. Can see arty types & casuals loving it tho, just not for me.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing this game within 1.5 hours I was left with a sense of disappointment. The whole narrative is built around this "curse" that's killing off members of the Finch family and as you play through the story you very quickly see that there is no curse at work here but instead more of unfortunate events.

    A little girl that doesn't get fed properly and eats whatever she can find which causes her death. There is some speculation as to whether she ate poisonous berries or choked to death but if she was allowed to have dinner then this would have been avoided.

    A baby drowns in the tub after being left alone. I knew how this event was going to unfold the second the story for this child began as I noticed a lack of supervision. Supervise the child and the baby lives.

    Another child plays on a swing. A gust of wind later he finds himself soaring over the edge of the cliff. Don't place a swing anywhere near a ledge and this problem doesn't occur.

    A child perishes while playing with his kite during a storm. The rest of the family took shelter but the kid that just gave his father the finger stays outside to play. Maybe if Dad or anyone else present would've made sure everyone made it inside (or discipline the child that just gave you the finger!) then this tragedy would've been avoided.

    Milton disappears so there is a mystery there which I was kind of hoping the game would elaborate on but... it doesn't.

    Then there's Barbara and her significant other. We're left believing that her fans killed her and all that was found was her ear. A chilling tale that leaves us wanting to know more.

    A father that goes hunting and after his daughter shoots a deer he poses with it after his daughter states that the deer is still twitching. The deer knocks him off of a ledge. Solution... Always check to make sure what you shot is dead. I thought that was something most people did after they shot something. I always do.

    One guy gets hit by a train, another drowns, one is under the influence of drugs and eventually commits suicide, one dies of drinking alcohol with medication, and another dies from an unknown illness.

    The only one I had already read about prior to playing was Edith's death which occurs while giving birth (at least that's what I was lead to believe).

    Some of these contain something of a mystery like Barbara (killed or disappeared), Milton (missing), Dawn (unknown illness), and maybe Edith since I don't believe that dying giving birth is very common even though it is still possible.

    Many of these stories can easily be explained and several of them could have been prevented. It didn't take long for me to see that there wasn't a curse at work and I was left hoping that one of those unexplained deaths/disappearances would work their way into the current story to prove that a curse was at play or something more interesting.

    After finishing this game I got 2 trophies and looked at the others as I thought that I might go collect the others but replaying the death of children just seemed kind of sick. Especially the baby. This game has no replay value. I understand that many people enjoyed the change of style that this game brought to the table and it could've been a great story but in the end it just wasn't. It definitely needs a solid mystery that unfolds. Let player's solve the puzzle or do something besides walk and listen.

    This game is unique but just because it's unique does NOT mean that it is good. I got it for free and I wouldn't recommend that anyone even play it for free. It isn't worth the time. Most reviews I've read people put up to 3 hours into and I was baffled. I put just under 1.5 hours into it and can't imagine wasting any more time on it. It could've been a great game. But there just isn't anything in this game to really pull you in especially when you realize that the next death is most likely an easily avoidable one.

    The game is really beautiful and unique, and each story has its own charm. It's one of the first so-called "walking simulator" games I've played, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I totally recommend giving a try, even though the only con I find is the duration of it (it takes about 2-3 hours to complete a full playthrough).

    This is a story driven walking simulator. Its good points is that the narrative is very immersive and one of the best at telling a story. For me, personally, the story itself was not that great thou. I got the game for free and for the time I spent with it it was worth the time, however, my personal recommendation would be to get this game during a sale.

    Very cool story. It forces to think about a lot of things. It's great that it's short. Today among all that 100+ hours open worlds it's a breath of fresh air. Recommend to all for sure!

    Hory Shet! what an amazing game, I Love It! I didn't expect much, but the second I started playing this game I was hooked emotionally and aesthetically! I hate walking sims but trust me this one is special. The house was so weirdly designed, that it was so interesting..I wished it was a house i could've lived in, especially as a kid. I didn't expect much, but the second I started playing this game I was hooked emotionally and aesthetically! I hate walking sims but trust me this one is special. Gameplay and story had me all over the place from chuckling, to gasping in awe, to even tugging at the heart strings. For what this game did it was a masterpiece, even the cons which some people say the game is too short, I think this game was perfect in length.. a little longer and i might've been fatigued of the gameplay/walking loop.     This is an excellent achievement for indie games. The story of the Finch family is beautifully told by the creative ways of introducing each character's tale by exploring the family house. Exploring the house itself is very enjoyable - it's as if you have actually come to this mysterious house and are exploring it yourself, finding each hidden contraption by yourself.     Wow! As far as "walking simulators" go, this is one of the very best. Beautiful visuals with an extremely engaging story. Also, can easily be beat in a single sitting.

    What Remains of Edith Finch is mostly a narrative experience, though it does have some interaction too. Its main strengths are definitely the atmosphere and storytelling; the idea that imagination may become deadly is brilliant and very well conveyed in the game.

Gone Home is actually quite close to Edith Finch in approach: a big house you slowly unlock doors in to uncover a story told to the player. I was quite excited to play this game considering the glowing reviews so imagine my surprise if, after 4 hours of ... well,I love walking sims, my favourites being Gone Home and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture but this one just didn't do it for me. I was quite excited to play this game considering the glowing reviews so imagine my surprise if, after 4 hours of ... well, walking ... the game ends and I'm left feeling "meh".

    Gone Home was a masterful example of how to drip a story to the player - you get to know a girl and slowly get emotionally engaged, reading about her good and bad times and in the end you really care what happens to her.

    WRoEF takes a very different approach. You wander through a house, not getting to know anyone but several generations of your own family ... superficially. Very superficially. It all revolves around a family with a curse where most family members die really early in life (not a spoiler by the way - on the main menu you can see a family tree with all the dates which gives it away from the start) and the whole game you basically uncover how each family member died.

    It sounds cool but you quickly discover that most of these stories and characters are not that interesting. You got an army kid, a hunter, a kid who loves space, a kid actress, etc. It adds variation but since the game doesn't actually let you connect to these characters, they fall flat when it comes to engagement so it all stands or falls on the merits of the stories themselves and out of a dozen, perhaps 3 are actually good. The game often lets you play a kind of mini-game while exploring these stories but not even that can save what feels like a dozen disconnected stories.

    In the end, I expected there to be some grand reveal that ties it all together but ... no. There is a bit of a twist but nothing grand and again, because you don't really get to know anyone, it doesn't quite work.

    Now, when it comes to how it treats its characters, it's a lot more like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture - that game had a ton of characters you didn't learn much about but the entire game didn't revolve around an emotional connection but rather around solving a mystery. Here in WRoEF, the mystery never gets answered so it leaves you hanging.

    On top of that, the game was impossible to play during day time: it was WAY too dark for no reason at all. Even turning up the brightness, I had to wait till the late afternoon before I could even see half the stuff on my screen.

    If you can get it for free or for €1-2, I'd say give it a go. It only takes 4 hours to "complete" and has zero replay value so the price of a second hand book seems about OK.

    In terms of gameplay this is a "walking simulator" at its heart, but it's the best I have played. When walking through the stories of each Finch, the player experiences something different. From reading a pulp fiction magazine, to climbing a tree chasing a cat, to trippy adventures such as controlling an owl or a shark. And each story has an emotional pay off.

    The only downside of the game are the technical issues. Frame rate isn't locked at 30 fps and moving the camera feels jerky because of erratic frame pacing. Even in enclosed spaces these problems persist. However these are not enough to make this game unplayable or anything bad.

    What Remains of Edith Finch is a slow paced, narrative-heavy experience, that will get you a good 3-4 hours of playtime. If you like games such as Gone Home, you'll definitely like this, too.

    It has a great story, but I could see why some people would not give the same rating. It could have better replayability. I really liked how they did the credits, great idea. I reccomend it to anyone who is a fan of singleplayer.

It's very easy going, and you almost have to relax playing it despite the tragedy and brutal emotional stories that the game rolls out. It doesn't really tax you much to work out how to play each story through flashbacks but you just have to go with it, which is one of the moral metaphors the games holds.

    The control is as good as it needs to be and the graphics are detailed throughout. Some scenes are very moving and elements of mystery and wonder are brought to you as you search through all the belongings of what these characters' lives held. The soundtrack is well placed and the intruiging outcomes keep you interested until the end. Overall its a very well put together piece of interactive art. Not much replay value though as the impact wouldn't hold up a second time.

    The game is a collection of short stories. Each of those stories focuses on the death of a different Finch family member and each is meant to look and feel different from the others, the way no two people in any family are alike.

    I downloaded this game from the PSplus and played it in one shot. it's just perfect in may opinion and I think helps a lot to understand better things that we normally just overlook

    If you've ever played the card game Gloom you might see some similarities and have a bit of a laugh. If you enjoy story driven walking simulators then this is a great one to add to your collection. But also I got it for free from PlayStation plus.

    Now, I know users on this site tend to not be too crazy for Gone Home, so it probably won’t help my case much to say that I actually liked it. All that to say, after playing What Remains of Edith Finch, I’ve got no reason to even think about Gone Home ever again.

    Gone Home isn’t the only other walking simulator I’ve played, though, I’ve played many others, quite a few of which I liked, several of which I absolutely adored (Stanley Parable, Beginner’s Guide, Journey, Night in the Woods), and Edith Finch I truly believe to be the best of them all. It reaffirmed why I love video games. It is so unique, so imaginative, so unexpected and breathtakingly original, taking full advantage of the medium’s strengths as an art form to tell a story that could have never been told through any other medium. Playing through this game was a wondrous experience, something that put a smile on my face a dozen times while simultaneously causing my eyes to well up, a game that left me satisfied yet yearning for more, it is truly joyous, evoking that feeling you get at the end of a great book, where your fingers just dwell on the last few pages as you’re reluctant to turn them, because you simply don’t want the experience of reading it for the first time to ever leave you.

    I’m sorry this isn’t a review, but just another rando on the internet gushing about how much they loved a video game, but I’m sure there’s been an infinite amount of internet ink already spilled over this masterpiece, so all I’m going to say is play it, play it before you read anything about it.

Again, I sometimes feel dizzy after playing first person perspective games. Surprisingly didn't make me feel dizzy at all. The movement in the game was spot on. Smooth. Entire gameplay was well crafted. Now, the game is very short. But, remember, the wise Jedi Master Yoda said, 'Size matters not." I too say that. It's the quality that matters most and they delivered. The thing we should keep in mind that no matter how long the game is, if the developers can't utilise and use the resources they have in a proper way and can't execute the necessary things properly, it'll never be a great game. E.g. Mass Effect Andromeda.
    Only con for me is that there's no platinum trophy for this game. Even after completing it 100% you'll not get a psn platinum trophy.

    About 3-4 hours of playing doesn't sound great, but this time not game length is important. Amazing visual background, great storyline, voice acting and that music is absolutely legendary mix. Emotions, which make you wanna play whole game through should be best way to reviev this title. Absolute MUST PLAY - Especially when is in May PS ➕ for free!

    Heartbreaking, terrifying and beautiful. I wish it was a bit longer. Loved all the little mini-games, especially the one where you are chopping the fish but at the same time being a character in your fantasy. Very unique experience overall.

    This is an amazing game. An introvert game, a secret game, something that will remain in my mind and heart. This is one of the best gaming experiencies I've had in a few years. And it's F R E E right now for PS Plus users!!!

The second half of the game, however, was very moving, with characters that are interesting and scenes that are compelling. The game nails its atmosphere, making everything feel delightfully magical, yet sad at the same time.

    What Remains of Edith Finch takes you on an amazing journey through the fantastical and heartbreaking layers of the Finch family. The game is a short one, and I kind of wish there was even more to dive into, because I absolutely loved what the game had to offer. It's one of the most creative games I have ever played, and it's one of the best examples of storytelling in video games.

    The story presents itself in very unique chapters, each with their own visual style and way of storytelling. However i'm not really that fond of the story itself either. It's good, don't get me wrong, but definitely not a masterpiece or must see. In fact it has a few problems, so without getting into spoilers let's just say that:
    1. I have no idea what tone they were going for, the overall story seems to be rather sad and melancholic, but then there are (supposedly tragic?) moments that are just hilarious and silly.
    2. Also has to do with 1. but in general the story lacked weight in my opinion. That has to do with tone issues but also with the fact that this feels more like a colorful book rather than a game. Most of the story is just being told to you. Other games make so much more use of their medium by having you experience a story through interaction and gameplay. I have a hunch that this could have easily just been a book or 60 minute movie (except that reviews then propably wouldn't have been so kind).

    All in all:
    Good enough story 8/10
    Gameplay/controls sucks 2/10
    Decent graphics with very unique presentation for different chapters 8/10

    If you liked Firewatch, Gone home or Everybodys gone to the rapture, you are going to love this game! It is by far the best of the 'so called' walking simulators. It is beautiful, fun, sad and exciting all at the same time, a phenomenal experience.

It's really, really short (about two hours) and it looks great,not astounding like some of this genres contemporaries. The voice acting is excellent, but what is being said isn't always that great. The story is good, but frankly it could have been better or more full. The ending was a letdown (personally). I would have wanted more exploration, especially at the $20.

    And that's the thing for me, that cost ruined what would have been an easy 9 (I never hand out 10's or 0's). Couple this with a static take on a genre that amounts to walking here and there and never "losing" (You are never in the threat of death or dying) and you have a somewhat overblown response.

    It's good for what it has, but that price tag makes it not worth buying as of this writing. If it were half the cost, it's a 9 all day long, but for what it was put out at, don't buy it.

If you're in the mood for a relatively short storytelling experience with beautiful visuals, you have to check this out. The game is packed full of tiny details that make the immersion so much more weighty. The gameplay is livened up by some truly imaginative moments that I've never seen done in a video game before - with the comic strip sequence being my personal favourite. While I didn't find the story to be anything more than a vessel for the gameplay, overall it's a very well constructed game that deserves to be recommended to others on account of its originality.     This is a one of a kind experience. It's pretty short and pretty strange but there is so much creativity in this game, that I can't help but rating it with a full scare. The gameplay is not challangeing but since every memory feels fresh, it doesn't really matter. And the voice actors are top notch too.

    Edith Finch very much finds itself fixated with the prospect of death and yet it also proves that there is always something to live for. It is a very interesting and unique take on the human condition in more ways than one and even livens up the otherwise tried and tired concept of walking around a house or other mostly linear area and reveling in your exploration a la Gone Home and Firewatch. Rather than merely be a carbon copy of all things done in the past, E.F. makes its own strides work and pushes far beyond what we’ve seen thus far.

    There is still the detailed way in which you must inevitably uncover clues and progress the plot, however the mere way the text is represented and narrated as you watch the words shift and fold onto the screen and on objects of interest makes things interesting enough. As you search the house and come across items belonging to lost relatives or objects of interest the creative ways in which the smoky text scrawl onto the screen and off of it when your perspective shifts are always engaging and imaginative. Although you are playing as the last Finch and the titular Edith, it’s also interesting to note that you’ll be literally living through the morbid ways in which your relatives bit the dust as well through reenactment and reading.

    There is an attention to detail in both the narrative and housing situation that constantly wowed me in ways that the admittedly bland games that have come before have not. Edith Finch looks graphically amazing and it also adds a believable amount of clutter to its main setting in ways that Gone Home and Firewatch and other similar title have not managed to do. At its root it is essentially the same type of game and yet with its variety of established characters and rich story it feels radically different as well. Although you will find yourself listening to just as many narrations and dialogues as any other exploration game in the same vein, the way it dynamically draws players in is both admirable and thoroughly worth the investment of a few short hours.

    What Remains of Edith Finch is both an experience grounded in reality and one that offers a sublime and surreal quality not before seen in the genre of late. Adventure games are very much making a comeback and in my mind Edith Finch is leading the charge as of right now. There is an ironic sense of childish fantasy overlapping with discussion of adult subjects and overall mortality and morality which is something that remains engaging throughout the morose and macabre environments you’ll explore. The game does a great job of balancing the lighter and darker elements and sometimes they’re quite difficult to distinguish from each other a well.

    Although there is a degree of linearity particularly in how each segment where you “play” as another family member pans out, it’s interesting to note that there are still those little instances of openness and ambiguity offered to the player in how you approach situations that eventually lead to the same inevitable conclusion. In some ways it operates as the Telltale brand of interactive storytelling does, albeit without the same level of choice in terms of alteration to the overall narrative. The text-driven narration and the general environments themselves often mesh together in ways that draw your attention from one thing to the next and never leave you feeling out of the action or bored for a moment- something that even excellent AAA games could learn from lengthy audio tapes and collectibles.

    There is a certain degree of ambiguity to the game’s eventual conclusion despite the premise being relatively straightforward and to simply ascertain what has lead to the demise of your relatives. That is your main goal and an easily accomplished one, however part way through the story it also becomes clear that something darker and more sinister is also afoot. Although there are hints as to how and why your relatives have been lead like lambs to the slaughter, it’s left ultimately up to players to mostly infer why and how. The saddest thing of all is that this information is purportedly available to you however circumstance dictates time and time again that you’re denied the full revelation and as such culminates in a slightly disappointing finish to an otherwise brilliant title.

    Graphics: The game is artistic and beautiful and constantly shifts between realistic and surreal at the flick of a switch. It conveys the tone and the mood throughout the narrative and often reflects what is being said as well as what is being felt in a believable manner.

    Sound: At times the voice-work can be quite mesmerizing and is certainly one of the higher points for the game. The sound work is also respectable and shifts to suit the tone of the moment being played out.

    Replay Value: Low.

    Unique and interesting game. The visuals were very well done and I enjoyed exploring the house with all the cool secret passages and attention to detail. Overall though, I didn't feel satisfied with the story in the end.

It's the most familiar thing in modern video games.The whole game would have to be re-worked. Ken Levine and Irrational would have to find a way to make it all engaging enough. So, the point is;Is Edith Finch(yes, I did not misplace a Bioshock Infinite review) the next and right path for Ken Levine and more broadly, traditional shooters with show-stealing narrative? Taking that question to its
    full, 100% conclusion,no. Edith Finch and even The Vanishing of Ethan Carter bare-bones approach to the heart of active narrative(is this my coined, ludo-narrative dissonance term?) is definitely a successful move. Yet both games left bad impressions immediately after finishing them. This is due to the lasting feel of the narrative but that doesn't mean there wasn't something missing. Looking at the dim yet shining architecture of the factory sequence, I thought if this focused, pure approach was the way the creators of Bioshock should adopt and or if a good deal more of these games should be made. But I couldn't fully say yes. As with most broad questions, what the answer entails is a measured, borrowed resolution. Take inspiration of Edith Finch's true gameplay sections with the narrative being the largest part of the game but still fitted with a lower amount of combat for example and I think we will get the complete, true modern "game".

The story is refreshing and essentially a compilation of several short tales regarding how each member of the Finch family died (this is not a spoiler btw). Each story is different and told in a separate style from the others. In this sense, the game never feels repetitive yet at the same time, lacks fluidity. The structure of the story is not too smooth, and in this sense, the big picture feels much smaller than it should be. For example, in the beginning, the game feels expansive and boundless, but by the end, you get a sense that something is missing. In fact, in regard to the ending, I was unsatisfied to the point that I almost regretted playing the game. All in all, however, it was a special experience and considering it was 20 dollars a pretty good buy as well. I recommend it, but if you are not into story or aesthetic based games I'd advise against it. Expand

    What remains of edith finch is a conventional story treated with sentiments and that relies on its ending to make it seem like the trip was worth it, but it was not. The ending was somewhat predictable (because that kind of twist has already been used for countless of games. Like Silent Hill Shattered Memories). But the game is extremely well made. The sound is excellent, atmosphere, graphics - everything is top notch. I wouldn't have cared about the price if the story truly delivered something profound, but, heh, it didn't. So yeah. Overpriced.

The sound is without any faults. The story? Not so much. It centers around a teenage girl who comes back to her creepy and mysterious family home after being suddenly forced to leave years ago. She enters the house where all the rooms had been sealed by her mother years ago, and finds her way inside. There she finds journals and documents that explain the family "curse" if you can call it that.Everyone, dating back several decades, is dead. And all of them died disturbing and bizarre deaths. Reading the documents transports you into the final moments of each deceased member of her family. The first, a demented little girl who thinks that a sea monster killed her. A teen former child star whose grim and morbid ending plays out in what I can only describe as a scene stolen directly from Tales of the Crypt. Where she's murdered by...Halloween monsters? A giggling monster with a high pitched voice laughs his way through her story, and at the end, jokes about the only thing left of her being her severed ear. A little boy who kills himself by jumping off a swing in a scene that's over in less than 5 minutes. A toddler who kill himself by drowning in the tub in another 5 minute scene. The scenes are all mostly a few minutes in length, and then you crawl through secret passages into the next hidden room with a new morbid story. The problem is not that it's short. It's the story or stories. You finish the game and learn what happened to the protagonist- which is predictable- and you're still several stories short of what happened to several distant family members. But I couldn't care less. The brief several minute long glimpses into each family member's morbid and disturbing deaths feel short, empty, and pointless. Yes, the deaths are tragedies. But many of them aren't even based in reality, and you learn virtually nothing about each character. Except a short bio and then how they died. In the end everything is perfect...except for the story. If you think you'd enjoy a story about a girl who searches a house and finds journals that has 5 minute playable death scenes, then feel free to spend your time and money. I wish I hadn't. If not? Get Firewatch instead. Expand

    The story is beautifully told, it's not quite the epic tale that some of the 10/10 scores would suggest but it's quite touching in places. Don't expect a mystery (or a resolution), the story is about the various lives/journeys rather than it leading you through the normal start, middle & end.

    I did wish more of it could be interacted with. Gone Home nailed the "explore an empty house"

    The game is constantly changing, you’ll be a cat one moment, then you’re an owl, a shark, a kid trying to swing around a branch…
    There are so many surprises twists and turns that I hardly want to talk about this game..
    I want to make my review as short as possible to not give too much away...
    There isn’t anything to do here but explore, walk... listen to the stories… and get your heart broken…
    the mystery and the constant gameplay change will keep you engaged from start to finish...
    The only problem I ran into with this game was a bug where my owl wouldn’t catch the 2nd rabbit I needed… I was trying to catch one for 20 minutes thinking I was doing something wrong... but it was the game... so if you run into the same problem, just quit the game and hop back... my 2nd try everything was fine.

    An amazing game. If you don't like this type of game, don't try it, but if you love an amazing and unique story, just play it, it delivers. For me it was perfect. Thank you for doing games like this.

    A wonderful story, experienced in a tight linear fashion, full of simple yet imaginative gameplay segments. I thoroughly enjoyed the 2-3 hours I spent with the Finch family, but with little incentive to replay I can't help but feel it's overpriced.

    A fresh and rewarding adventure. What Remains of Edith Finch will delight those looking for a story well told. It successfully captures each tale with surprisingly tailor made game mechanics that offer both diversity and emotional resonance. It was a pleasure to play and explore the history of this mysterious family.
