With Weird West, WolfEye has created an ambitious immersive sim hybrid that sucks you ever-deeper into its gritty, bizarre world of the cults n’ cowboys like a particularly impatient quicksand. It occasionally struggles to translate its combat to a controller as smoothly as it could, but the rest of this package is so damn intoxicating that it matters little in the long run. A masterful game with a fascinating set of stories to tell.

Weird West is an excellent immersive sim that marries a unique world, choice-driven gameplay, and a gorgeous aesthetic to create a game that’s unlike anything we’ve played this year. 2022 has been stacked with great games, but you should skip Weird West at your peril — or the Pigman will get you.

Lacking some refinement in general and improvements in controls, Weird West overcomes these minor problems with good stories in different characters, great immersive sim system and an addictive combat.

The beautiful thing about Weird West is also what makes it critically impenetrable. At least for me, my enjoyment of the game is tied to my particular playstyle. If you’re more ruthless with NPCs, if you’re more stealth-focused, or if you’re more patient, this is a very different game. So my frustration with the stealth is a sign to sneak around less. If I’m unhappy with the story, I can always change how it ends. Conversely, the movement and aiming controls are a tangible way of making your platforming choice. If you’re looking for a western RPG with this sort of blissful, overwhelming freedom, you’ve come to the right place. For better or for worse, Weird West has that freedom.

Weird West has a lot of interesting systems working under the hood to let you play as you like. With this comes a certain amount of jank which undermines the immersion somewhat but the multiple character stories and many choices still make it worth playing.

Weird West sets its sights high by promising player freedom and a responsive world to butterfly effect the hell out of, and it very nearly delivers on all of it. At its best, WolfEye Studios' first outing offers delightfully chaotic combat and an interesting supernatural setting that leaves no actions without consequence. But while in many respects Weird West achieves some of its grander ambitions, it fails to nail some of the basics. Immersive sim fans will be in their element here, but Raphael Colantonio's latest won't have as wide an appeal as his previous successes with Arkane.

Playing Weird West, it’s hard to shake how much more gracefully other games of this type avoid similar pitfalls.

I normally hate twin stick shooting, but here I treat it as a part of the experience. Also, the game has something that games don’t have today: story and dialogues written by a writer or someone who knows what they’re doing.

Try it. It’s not expensive and worth every penny.

It's fantasy and cowboy mixed together and the combat works very well. The combat isn't turn-based, which scared me, but with slow motion and other abilities you can do some impressive impressive shooting. Problems talked about in other posts have been fixed in updates. Game runs very smoothly on the PS4.. Expand

I think the game is extremely fun and addictive so Im happy paying $40 for it on the PS5 & strongly recommend playing this indie title. Only issue I have is the aiming, its very clunky & needs a lock on target option and it does get repetitive. Some characters dont even look like the pic next to their body and the camra does get in the way when traveling through buildings. Great game and hope wolfeye makes another. Expand

But the story didnt really make it for me, since it was divided into 5 parts with different points of view which is kinda original, it kinda prevented me from really feeling attached to one character since I kept switching from one to another. I was thrilled to see that the developers of Dishonored were creating a new studio and they were developing a brand new game based on this genre.
sadly, the output of the game was not what I expected... a western game should be based on shooting mechanics, but the game relies heavily on stealth mechanics and I felt more like a shinobi or a thief than an actual cowboy or bounty hunter. the environments and graphic style i great, and the gameplay per se is not bad, but when you shoot, your bullets seem to go in slow motion (and you even have an ability to slow time a la Matrix, which is totally cool) but your enemies fire bullets faster than you, so the best way to approach this game is to kill enemies stealthily.
I could not keep it... I did not even finishe the first chapter with the bounty hunter, I got bored of this, If I want to play as a thief or an assassin I would go and play Dishonored, but in a game based on the western genre, you would expect gunplay to be the major player, not an option. This game may be liked by other people, but it was not for me... now I will go to play Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmarer to quench my thirst on weird west fantasy, as this game was not enough for me.

The controls make it way too difficult to aim, the enemies are actually really difficult to spot, making stealth nearly impossible, and the autosave doesn't even work sometimes. Make sure you save plenty because if you die, which you certainly will, you can be brought back really far in the game. If you're looking for a different experience, you'll get it... you just won't get the good game that comes with it Expand
