A stellar remastering of one of the best fighting games ever, Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Edition is at the very apex of Sega's long running series and in doing so, its elevated profile will hopefully propel the franchise forward as a whole to heights that it has long deserved. Virtua Fighter is back and it's better than ever.

Mechanically Virtua Fighter 5 still is an outstanding Vs-fighting-game that looks better than ever. But it lacks singleplayer content as well as a modern netcode.

While the game itself is basically the same Virtua Fighter 5 bolstered with a graphical makeover, it’s hard to fault it when the core fighting system is just so meticulously polished. Regardless of what the future may hold for the franchise, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is a welcome return of a 3D fighting legend, one that looks and plays better than it ever has before. The major caveat here is that the wealth of online multiplayer options are potentially held back by the netcode.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is a revamped and remastered version of a brilliant game released over a decade ago. Despite the simple 3-button setup, the battle system is surprisingly deep. This game is easy to access but hard to master. Every fighter has his unique fighting style and everyone can find is perfect fitting. SEGA obviously wants to push the online experience since offline modes are very limited. Expect regular free updates for netcode and new contents in the next months.

Mechanically Virtua Fighter 5 is still one of the greats, and being able to play it again is definitely a pleasure for any fighting game aficionado. Unfortunately, a weak netcode in a primarily online based fighting game is a terrible sin.

Virtua Fighter is still a great game, no doubt about it. And Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown fully re-proposes the old-but-gold original combat system, enhanced by a Training mode that explains in depth everything there is to know about it. What’s inexplicable in this operation is the poor care paid to the multiplayer, penalized by an old and poorly performing netcode, which heavily limits a game designed to be SEGA’s first step towards esports.

A lazy and bite-free remastered, designed for online but with a netcode absolutely not up to par. A carefully created online component would certainly have made a combat system shine that remains solid and fun after decades, finally bringing the saga back to the beat 'em up giants. Let's hope Sega has learned his lesson and wants to "get serious" next time.

По мере прохождения вы овладеете собственным боевым стилем, чтобы победить всех соперников в Пятом мировом боевом турнире и стать легендой Virtua Fighter.

What a bad start!!! First, this game is f..... ugly!!! The characters at least, the levels itself arent anything special, but at least they look decent for being a remaster of a PS3 game, but the models are just so plastic with barely any animation!!! It looks like a PS2 launch title. And the controls... oh my lord, compared to other fighting games like Marvel Vs Capcom or Street Fighter were the controls are so smooth, here the controls are broken as hell. There´s so much input lag and every time you press a button the character makes a combo automatically. This type of mechanics could barely work on a fighting game 40 years before, dont even talk now. Just to be clear, Virtua Fighter 5 online for the 360 is in the top 20 of my favorite games of all time. Considering that I've been playingJust to be clear, Virtua Fighter 5 online for the 360 is in the top 20 of my favorite games of all time. Considering that I've been playing games close to 30 years and have played 100's of them, that means something to me.

Virtua Fighter 5 Online had this excellent quest mode that encouraged new players (like me at the time) to learn and experiment with many different characters. With each victory you had in quest mode you improved your rank and increased your chances of unlocking one of the many costume pieces for your character. Eventually you would have to travel to a more difficult arcade, forcing you to go into training mode to learn some new moves so you can continue to level up and unlock fun content. it was a simple but ohh so effective way to keep new players engage as they learn the many ropes and systems that are in Virtua Figher.

Ultimate Showdown does not have a quest mode or any unlockable content, leaving new players little else to do, other than to go online and get killed by more experienced players... like me. Add in the fact that the game looks markedly worse than both its 2008 and 2012 counterparts and I see why the game was made free to ps+ members... it would be nothing short of robbery to pay for this. (They really want 30 bucks for this after August?)

This is a bit off topic but I want to talk about DOA: Ultimate which was released way back in 2004. Like Ulitmate Showdown that game was a third iteration, in this case being DOA2, that game had: a bonus character, new environments, a beautifully update graphic engine and packed to the gills with unlockable content. DOA:Ultimate lived up to its name... I promise your their is absolutely nothing Ultimate about 2021's Ultimate Showdown.

    (Side Notes)
A.) Awful netcode. It was acceptable back in the day but we have had so many advances in technology that the game should be running much better.
B.) Why no keyboard chat in lobbies? Why hamper the ability to communicate with each other?
C.) Seriously why does the game look so ugly? Vanessa and Sarah look like they were beaten with a shovel, and Lei Fei looks like someone drew angry eyebrows on his face while he was sleeping.

    Final Thoughts:
End of the day this is just a huge missed opportunity. After a 10 year hiatus they had a chance to revitalize the franchise and entice new players to get into the fold. But there's nothing here for them. Series Vets will enjoy playing online matches again but without any new blood this game and ultimately this franchise is doomed to die. And that's a damn shame.
