You see the game starts off very slow, easy and cheesy and doesn't make a next generation wow effect. Those who stay with it tho will realize this game is essentially a mixture of many successful games of the past. This is essentially a very large blend of champions of Norrath series more so than diablo. There are parts of this game which seem to be inspired by the original diablo, sacred 2 and mostly the ps2 games dark alliance return to arms and champions of Norrath. This is where I can see the polarized reviews coming from. Next generation players will not understand this is essentially an extremely large updated last generation style game and think it sucks. Those of us who still enjoy or reminisce over last generation games will go squirrelly as this game is essentiall a wish come true of a massively made awesome ps2 style game with improved graphics and environment making use of next generation data storage space. I almost ran into this trap by not playing it enuf before reviewing. At first I thought it was pretty lame but the more I advanced I realized how large and awesome this game was. That said, it took a long time for this game to get rolling, basically it doesn't heat up until 3/4 through the first play through. From there and into ng+ it's pretty incredible. The game has a lot of software glitchiness. Most of the earlier problems upon release have been correct however some annoyances remain. The developers are supporting fixing their errors very well but it is still a peeve of mine at times. Still, I started off thinking this game was not that great and the more I'm playing it the more I'm reversing that opinion. i would recommend this game to players who enjoy the simplicity of last generation games in a more massive setting and maybe say buyer beware to more fussy next generation gamers there is nothing new and innovative in this game. Wolves of Midgard is a diablo style hack and slash game that you can play solo or online if you can find someone where you play as a male or female Viking to save the world from the frost and fire giants
The character you choose does change the story and dialog slightly, but both campaigns are the same But it will hardly matter as really the story just became static before too long, I had no interest in what was going on..
But I still managed to enjoy my time with this game…
But that’s not the only reason this game is surprisingly enjoyable…
Its mostly a surprise because of how repetitive it really is…
Every mission from start to finish is the same
and the dungeons here all start looking the same after a while as well…
plus the loot isn’t really that cool..
But I still enjoyed my time slicing through enemies and swapping out gear… collecting their blood to level up….
When you do level up you get skill points to spend on a tree based off of a norse god..
These gods are attached to weapons though which is just a little annoying…
And theres a level cap of 30 here… so it isn’t as simple as just grinding for your new favorite weapon
it forces you to have to choose your weapon type early on before you get a chance to play with them all or even see what youre going to get in the future… if you want to be as powerful as possible
because unlocked skills in each tree as gifts from the gods…
Theyre special moves and attacks you can do during battles that can only be done with certain weapons equipped…
The combat here feels fairly satisfying…
Theres decent challenge here and youre able to roll to dodge attacks… but there isn’t much more to it than hit and dodge and throw down some special attacks….
And at the end of each level theres a boss…
the bosses are pretty cool, only 1 or 2 gave me any trouble though…
And they feel varied enough to still be an enjoyable endcap to each level..
After youre done with this 10 hour campaign you can start again in new game plus, capped out at level 30.. but your gifts do carry over or play as the other character….
there isn’t much incentive to do either though… especially due to the low level cap…
    I enjoyed myself..
but theres nothing here that youll want to experience more than once…
Wolves of Midgard is an enjoyable experience..
You wont regret playing it.. but its nothing special…
I give Vikings: Wolves of Midgard
    a 7/10

A solid action RPG that's not trying to reinvent the wheel. The action is enjoyable, graphics are decent for the genre and the Viking setting and mythos is a fresh take. Oh and the developers are a small indie house, considering that they did really good. I'm kinda romantically hoping that they will put my 50€ to a better use than a big developer would.

Expand

As a diablo fan I can say the game is great, not amazing, just great. The game has very great graphics even better then diablo 3 which are also great. Together with the viking feeling it feels already a unique rpg . The story is also pretty good but i've seen better in rpg's like diablo . The combat is great only the enemies feel to weak , but bosses are okay. Everything else is also greatAs a diablo fan I can say the game is great, not amazing, just great. This is a very good game, of course not comparable with Diablo 3. Graphics and sound are great. The most impressive is the critical hit scene. I think it deserves the price.

Don't let them fool you. This is one of the worst games i've ever played.

    First playthrough is... boring.
Everything after this - worthless. U get everything deleted except of your skilltree (even the +% of whatever by leveling up - deleted!)
So, if u wanna buy a game with 12h content and scripted loot....

No one really speaks about the technical faults of this game a ten? are you kidding?
Enemies don't always die they sometimes get trapped half in the level, no local co op.
Loot is scripted. A boss glitched and we couldn't kill him, we had to redo the whole level. It's painful trying to get every iron skull. Sometimes they don't even all spawn in the bog. It's hard in the beginning, but

This game could be so good, but it's held back by the way you lose all progress since the last checkpoint every time you die. It defeats the very purpose of an ARPG: to play fast, slash enemies and have fun. Here you have to play careful all the time.

Well, I expected much more from this game! The viking mythology can´t save the whole game ... Its not a total failure, but it will not even amaze you... And it´s not so challenging to defeat your opponents.... Its like a loop, nothing will surprise you ... But because I was missing something like Diablo III, I enjoyed it somehow.... Rating 6/10 is fair I think.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is a failed experiment where the things that it does right are quickly overshadowed by an obnoxious UI, clunky controls, and generally frustrating experiences navigating the software that really detract from the game.

The game itself, the parts where you are running around, killing enemies, casting spells, using abilities, hacking, slashing, and getting loot are enjoyable. It's the Diablo formula so it's pretty tried and true. The problems appear everywhere in between.

Want to navigate around your inventory? Make sure you very ginergly push the control stick up and right and then return it in a straight line to center or the icon will bounce right of the item you are trying to select and go to you head or hands.

Want to level up? Good luck. These trees don't even navigate in the cardinal directions (not to mention, if you want to specialize in 1 class, you have no choices anyhow. You will just spend all your points every turn in exactly the skills that you just unlocked.)

Want to return to the village? Just open the menu and hit the x button. Oh nothing happened? Hit it again. Wait. Try holding it. Maybe both players need to do it simultaneously. Well maybe just tape it 30 or so times until it registers the command. Cool.

Ready to stop playing? Just hit the save button and then log out. Oh, there is no save button? Well will it autosave when I leave? Nope. I'll just lose any of the item selling or crafting I did.

Are there ways around these problems? Sure.
Carefully pointing the control stick, jamming the button 100 times, and learning to always end the game by doing a God's trial so you get the benefit of a post trial autosave are all hoops you can jump through and will over time become second nature. But you shouldn't have to!

So, should you get this game?
If you are jonesing for a Diablo-style couch -co-op game and have exhausted all your other options...sure. But be prepared for the frustrations the game will bring you. Know what you are getting into and set your expectations low so that you can laugh at how terribly designed everything is and just enjoy hacking up trolls and rival clans. Ya know...for fun.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard manages to provide some fun for those who know what they're getting into. Simple yet serviceable combat and a competent graphical presentation make for a game that is as easy to handle as it is to look at. Its multitude of extraneous features, however, fail to add much engaging and compelling to the mix; resource management and town-building, multiple skill trees, repeatable hunt maps, and a rage combat ability can all safely be ignored. Though it has a lengthy campaign and relatively low challenge, it never really manages to rise past the basic thrill of its combat, and will disappoint those looking for a deep, satisfying story or anything beyond the hack-and-slash loot-a-thon it is.

A distinctly below average hack-and-slash game with better examples of the genre already out there.

There’s a lot to like in Vikings, even if the game’s never able to effectively articulate how it’s different to the genre’s greats. It manages - just - to be more than a by-the-numbers Diablo clone thanks to the creative energy that went into its bosses and environment design, but it relies too heavily on that, and the assumption that you’ll be playing the game in multiplayer. As a single player experience, the limits on what Vikings can offer become distracting; making it good for a lazy afternoon of grinding fun, but not something that you’ll remember over the longer term.
