Incredibly disappointing. This, plus Akiba's Beat and Caligula Effect are the most underwhelming JRPGs we got this year (even the SAO game released last month is far better than this, and that's just sad). I recommend that you just get the remaster on the PS4, or even on the PC (hell, even the ps3 version still holds up). Th only thing Revolution has that's salvageable is the OST. Other than that, is just a bland JRPG that doesn't satisfy any of the fans of the genre, nor the franchise. And even if you are an Xbox One gamer who is need of a JRPG (which makes no sense because why would you buy a console that barely sold in Japan, thinking it would have almost as the same amount of JRPGs as the PS4's and Nintendo's JRPGs?), then it is better off that you just get Final Fantasy 15, or just get Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Vesperia through backward compatibility. Closest Revolution comes to first 3 games is it's title. Tactical combat system completely tossed out and replaced by real-time action RPG. Alternative history WWII is replaced with swords, magic and mechas that again, more of a magical device, rather then machine powered by ragnite.
While all together it's might be OK'ish Action RPG; but there is no reason to call it Valkyria game. Just

Despite all the bad reviews, I have so much love for this franchise that I just HAD to try this game out. I was sure I'd like it, somehow. It did not happen.

This should not even be called a "Valkyria" game, in my opinion. It shares the same universe, sure, but nothing else. Everything that made "Chronicles" so much fun, such a challenging and engaging game, is gone. The graphics are

This should not even be called a "Valkyria" game, in my opinion. It shares the same universe, sure, but nothing else. Everything that made "Chronicles" so much fun, such a challenging and engaging game, is gone. The graphics are ok, I guess, and the gameplay is more Dynasty Warriors than anything else. But the rest is really a very mediocre game.

And that is sad, really. I don't understand where Sega wanted to go with this. Everything feels messy and unfinished. A story that does not make much sense, a cast of forgettable characters, a confusing set of menus and upgrade options that never get a proper explanation. You are just thrown on the battlefield and press X until another (lazy, mostly) cutscene pops up.

This is one boring, uninspired, game. Got tired of it really fast. And it sucks that such an amazing franchise is probably dead after this. Then again, there will always be Valkyria Chronicles to remind us how incredible a proper sequel could be.

    Avoid this game, really.

Never played it and really want to but whilst dick heads think their opinions are more valid and try to score tamper, I will smash it in reverse with a fat zero.

I'm not a fan of action RPG's and much prefer turn based. I have all the VK games including the PSP exclusive and love them all. Until this one. The devs made a great play of saying, after initial fan criticism that they were moving away from TBS to ARPG that they were introducing tactical elements. Well maybe they did, but they are pretty much none existent. The world is full of actionI'm not a fan of action RPG's and much prefer turn based. Well maybe they did, but they are pretty much none existent. The world is full of action RPG's so many franchises do this, and so many more convert from turn based to ARPG (Final Fantasy just has) It's nothing to do with being an old gameplay system - it's to do with a large minority of gamers preferring it - always. Yet every game moves to the Demon Souls, God of War, Final Fantasy 15, Witcher style of gameplay. I bought it because I loved the franchise before this game and the devs said they were introducing tactical elements. The franchise is now cack - and the tactical elements are so minimal as to be not even worth considering. Not only that, but it isn't a particularly good ARPG, and the textures are really pretty poor, often mashing up "blending#2 into each other. So even as an example of the franchise in a different genre of game - it's still cack. Back to X-Com and Hard West etc. Much better games than this tripe. Expand

Well, this one is hard to review, even from the perspective of someone who likes story-based games.

First of all, this game is not very interactive. You'll spend most of your time watching the story progress through cutscenes. There's no decisions you can make that change the way the story progresses. You just go on battle missions every once and a while between cutscenes.

As long as you're okay with that, you might find the story interesting. Overall, I'd say it's average per JRPG standards. It's a war story from the perspective of the few people who instigated the war.

At first, they throw a lot of story and character information at you at once that makes things confusing, but after I got past the first few hours, I understood what was going on and was genuinely interested. But depending on how intelligent you like your stories, you might find the ending incredibly disappointing. For me, it didn't make a lot of sense and wasn't very believable. I'd say the ending events are more appropriate for teens or for people who don't mind "power of friendship" moments or silly motivations.

The characters are good overall, but their designs and outfits are a little inconsistent. My biggest issue with the character designs is the watermelon-shaped/sized breasts on the main villain. Every time the camera focused on those breasts, I was pulled out of the story and thought to myself that these balloons were added because they didn't have enough confidence in the story for it to carry itself, and they needed help from some comically-oversized-breast lovers.

Dialogue in the game is slow and repetitive. This definitely isn't the game for you if you don't like to hear everyone's opinions in a group in at least two different ways before they move on to the next topic. It's bearable if you're interested in the story, but can quickly become old and boring if you're not.

I don't care about combat in games unless it distracts from the experience and that's unfortunately the case here. Combat is action-based and is too easy for the most part. Its like all of the enemies think they're in a Valkyria Chronicles game, so they're behind cover and mostly immobile while you just run in with swords and slaughter them all. The boss fights, on the other hand, are long and repetitive. Boss fights mostly consist of doing the same attacks over and over for 10-20 minutes.

The game would have benefitted a lot from simply copying the combat system from Valkyria Chronicles or by removing the combat system completely, leaving this as only a story book game.

As for bonus and side-content, there's several side-stories to view that unlock at certain parts of the main story. They're primarily character-background pieces, which you can view if you're interested in those characters. After being disappointed by the ending, I had no interest in viewing these.

the story of the game is the strong point, the combat is lackluster, and the reason why im giving it a 4 is when nearing the end you have to fight Gilouche i got bugged out twice, his hp stays at 0
and not in the mood to redo this again, as you have to clear 2 stages again before you reach him.
tough luck but overall i would have given it a solid 7... have to watch the ending somewhere online :p

For all its many faults, the script does at least make a valiant effort of recognising and explaining the politics of war and propaganda. That doesn’t change the fact that there’s an army of games more worthy of your money. [October 2017, p75]

I can’t praise Valkyria Revolution‘s story enough. It’s a clear-eyed meditation on the horrors of war – even, perhaps especially, justified war. If the developers had found a way to make the dreary, repetitive combat as worthwhile as the story that frames it, this would have been an incredible game.
