I recommend that you just get the remaster on the PS4, or even on the PC (hell, even the ps3 version still holds up). Th only thing Revolution has that's salvageable is the OST. Other than that, is just a bland JRPG that doesn't satisfy any of the fans of the genre, nor the franchise. And even if you are an Xbox One gamer who is need of a JRPG (which makes no sense because why would you buy a console that barely sold in Japan, thinking it would have almost as the same amount of JRPGs as the PS4's and Nintendo's JRPGs?), then it is better off that you just get Final Fantasy 15, or just get Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Vesperia through backward compatibility. The combat differs from the original games taking away the turn based aspect into a more action oriented style of play. Don't get me wrong, there is still a tiny form of turn-based gameplay in there but it is hardly noticeable. I found that the combat was not natural or fluid, I felt that it seemed rather robotic with each character knowing only one set of moves throughout the entire game.

One thing I did love about this game was the art style, the use of their new GOUACHE rendering engine allows for a more painty looking approach to graphics, I loved the fact that each moment looked like the game was painted on a canvas.

All in all I think that if you can get past the long slog of cutscenes, terrible acting and clunky gameplay, you will find a game with a solid soundtrack and story. It wasn't a great game in my opinion but still worthy of a try.

I am updating my original rating after playing a little bit more, and bumping up the score. The graphics are nice, and the soundtrack is great. First context. This is NOT Valkyria Chronicles 4, so if you're going in expecting that, you'll be disappointed. No...this game might as well have been a totally different spinoff because it only shares very light things with the original series.

In Revolution, you're actually a guy who is being told the history of a war in the 19th century when "The Traitors" were involved. Think of a 19th century version of Three Kingdoms; it's actually very similar. The story is told in terms of flashbacks and book segments that collectively put everything in perspective.

I'm on the fence with the graphics. This is a game that could easily have been on the Switch. They're not bad, but certainly nothing here that screams next gen. Yes, the cutscenes are lengthy, but I love cutscenes anyway. People likely forgot that Valkyria Chronicles 1 had cutscenes nearly as long; they were just spliced together better. In Revolution, the only thing that makes them really annoying is the load times in between each one, which seems to indicate that Sega didn't put enough time into optimizations.

The music is evocative of war and isn't bad, but there are very few distinct tracks. Chronicles had the same issue, but it had the advantage of unique songs per storyline battlefield. I would also point out that it's fully English voiced even at a low $39.99 price, unlike Koei who can't be bothered on their Musou games anymore at $60.

The characters have personality, but they're explored very infrequently, even less so than Chronicles 2 (PSP). The development improves as the game goes by, but you start out as just a ragtag group with no real backstory.

But the story...oh my, what a story. The game plays this out like you're in a digital novel, and it's captivating. The lack of character development hurts it a bit, but the underlying conspiracies and dark tendencies make you want to see more and more. It's easily the best part of the game.

When you first start out, the battle engine will feel very pithy and light, but certain scenarios will result in your team members getting knocked out. There's a severe difficulty upswing with the storyline battles, especially with the Valkyria. Even some optional battles are hard enough that you'll run out of ammo and grenades, forcing you to fight toe-to-toe. It's not like Chronicles where rifles essentially had unlimited ammo; nope. I laugh hearing people say this has no strategy; the hell it doesn't. When you're surrounded by tanks and soldiers shooting and mines on the ground, and you're clean out of magic power and ammo and forced to melee, it's quite exciting. I like it. A bit slow, but some battles are really engaging. Don't judge it on the first few scenarios - trust me, it WILL get more challenging.

Overall I haven't been able to stop playing the game, and I am eager to learn more about the characters. I doubt any of them will leave an emotional footprint like Isara, but perhaps they'll leave their own variation.

Everything that made "Chronicles" so much fun, such a challenging and engaging game, is gone. The graphics are ok, I guess, and the gameplay is more Dynasty Warriors than anything else. But the rest is really a very mediocre game.

And that is sad, really. I don't understand where Sega wanted to go with this. Everything feels messy and unfinished. A story that does not make much sense, a cast of forgettable characters, a confusing set of menus and upgrade options that never get a proper explanation. You are just thrown on the battlefield and press X until another (lazy, mostly) cutscene pops up.

This is one boring, uninspired, game. Got tired of it really fast. And it sucks that such an amazing franchise is probably dead after this. Then again, there will always be Valkyria Chronicles to remind us how incredible a proper sequel could be.

    Avoid this game, really.

Cutscenes are long and boring with characters standing almost still while their mouths awkwardly move during their dialogue moments or you see the back of them as if to save money on animating their mouths.

The story is told between a woman and either it's her pupil or some journalist and I hate it when a story starts out that way because it tells me all this stuff happened already and it lead to a peaceful land even though they were deemed traitors. It is like being told the end of a book when you just open to the first page.

Enemy AI is just stupid. They wait around and do nothing until you get within view, but by the time they are about to take action you can kill them.

    My history with the franchise.
Let me start off by saying that I'm not a "true" fan of this series that has played VC 1, 2, and 3. I only just recently played VC 1(remastered) a few months ago but I liked it. However, I can say that the combat pacing for me was slow, and especially so with trying to go for the platinum which I did achieve. The story for the game was decent and had an emotional touch to it which made it beautiful.

    Gameplay.
Then I saw that they were making this game and it was more action/fast paced with a less strategic direction. I can understand that strategy fans would be disappointed in the direction of this game's gameplay but I'd say fans of games like Dynasty Warriors wouldn't mind it at all. Now, starting off, the combat is really simplistic 1 button press to win type game and I believe many were immediately turned off by that. However, as you continue and begin upgrading the character's weapons, you get more access to different magic/secondary weapons and then it starts getting fun. I loved the amount of ways you could take out a platoon of enemies by the end of the game with flashy animations and powerful magic. I honestly might make a youtube video of my endgame level 70 characters with max weapons/magic. From that statement, yes, I just achieved the platinum for this game as well and immediately came to my computer to write this review.

    Story.
All I have to say is that the effort that went into the storytelling is absolutely amazing. This game's story completely outdoes VC1's story in my opinion. The point of view that it is being told from is after everything has already happened( about 100 years into the future). It has a similar premise with VC1, where a small country ends up defying/destroying a much bigger nation. The story's strength isn't in its originality or plot twists or anything. The strength is in how its meticulously told from practically every point of view, from allies & enemies alike. It won't make you feel like there are any plot holes at all throughout your playthrough, but it managed to have 1 or 2, involving the Valkyria & the princess unless I missed something. And then there are the emotional touches to it accompanied by such an amazing soundtrack, I couldn't bring myself to criticize/hate the developers effort, despite the lackluster body/facial movement animations. (And it's disappointing because if they definitely put more budget in getting that right, then everything about the story would be perfect, in my opinion). Everyone seems to complain about the long cutscenes (due to some to most being poorly animated) but that is woefully subjective, because I loved them and found a few like-minded souls that like them as well, so consider that anecdotal evidence. I guess you can say I tolerated them because I was loving the overall story and wanted to see it through to the end.

    Difficulty
The game only has 2 difficulties on the first playthrough; Easy & Normal. The people complaining about how easy the game is might've been on Easy or never played past chapter 4 or 5 on Normal( which you can actually tell from the trophy achievement list. The 2nd story trophy which is literally in the beginning (about Chapter 1 or 2 I believe) has 91.2% of achieving it. But then the 3rd one (out of 5 story trophies total) only has a 20.6% achieved percentage that is acquired in Chapter 6 or 7. That's a massive 70% drop off of players.
Anyway, the game does start off piss easy with little variation but it's crazy how the story spikes from chapter 6 onward. I found the bosses annoyingly satisfying because you had to go through a whole stage first fighting enemies without saving, while conserving your items/ammo/mana, and then take on the boss which at times I found myself running out of ammo and items to replenish my mana.

    Characters
The game has less overall characters than VC1 but the character development for each one was really good for me. However, they didn't put any(or very few) of the quirky get-to-know-your-characters development scenes in the actual story or else it would have been even longer.
Those scenes were reserved for the free fully voiced DLC they slowly released over the course of a few weeks. Some of them actually did have really good body/facial animations and others still suffered from lack thereof but the voice actors did a great job with them though. However, they did have some some non-voiced group sessions (officially called "Circles") where your characters talked about various things like love, patriotism, art, family, weapons, childhood, fashion, jobs, food, and books. I'm not lying when I say that I really knew the characters by the end of my first playthrough. And in a way, they make you have to use all of the characters because that's the only way to get the secret ending :-)

Lots of story sequence makes for a slow start and Im betting thats where a lot of the low review scores are coming from. Once you get into the meat of the game its a good SRPG/ARPG hybrid that takes some risks to be a little bit different from the pack. Some of those risks dont pay off but most of them do.

If lots of long story driven cut scenes bother you, maybe look elsewhere but

The game is an hack and slash adventure title with some strategy features. the game almost plays like a visual novel due it's big amount of cutscenes. Valkyria Revolution has you follow a set of characters with each their own ambitions in a world driven by war and greed. Now the problem for many players is that the game isn't anything like it's predecessors. But again it's very clearly a spin off title. The game also suffers from some very jarring animations and a lot of loading screens. Past the slow start you are greeted with a very beautifully written tale that puts a interesting spin on the game. The combat really isn't anything special. But both story and combat open up as you progress further in the story. But the boss battles in this gamer are utterly bad. They are just bulletsponges that will spam the same attack on your brainless party. You could always grind on the same 5 maps which gets extremely repetitive. It's horribly bad towards the end game with slow bits and it's reusing every single location from up to chapter 5 in the later story missions. Valkyria Revolution is a interesting take on the Valkyria saga and is held together by it's story despite the many flaws.

I bought it because I loved the franchise before this game and the devs said they were introducing tactical elements. The franchise is now cack - and the tactical elements are so minimal as to be not even worth considering. Not only that, but it isn't a particularly good ARPG, and the textures are really pretty poor, often mashing up "blending#2 into each other. Overall, I don't hate the combat at all, in fact, I enjoy quite a bit after tweaking here and there and with enough time in the game you can have some enjoyment too in neutralizing a lot of enemies at once...but more to that later.

The story is told in flashback instead of the usual way: the story tells of the events from 100 years ago, where 5 people called "the traitors" were condemned for actions against their countries and eventually executed: the flashbacks are a conversation between a student and his teacher and the "truth" behind the so-called traitors will be slowly revealed the more you play, which is the entire theme of this game: discovering the truth.
As much as I don't really enjoy flashback type of storytelling, the way it starts is actually interesting and the game does an ok job to lure the player into wondering what truly happened, especially when you know they're all dead by now.
I mean, it's been 100 years, pretty sure they're dead in a way or another...

So let's talk about what's wrong with this game, starting with combat: it's too easy and normal enemies barely give you a challenge, especially when later on you can get some powerful ragnites that can 1 shot most enemies at once.
Not only it's easy but it's made even easier by making the game pause whenever you want to use other attacks or weapons (by pressing triangle), so if you need to heal or cast spells you can literally spam your best skills and barely get hit, as you will hit the immobile enemy without any chance to be hit.
The only exceptions are the boss fights, which suddenly gives a difficulty spike that could potentially wipe your team if you're not careful enough. On top of that bosses are hp sponges and take a lot of time to go down, easily 10 minutes if you aren't prepared at least a bit. But the game is still overall easy even with the bosses being tougher than usual: you can ress anyone anytime by pressing R1 and you're invincible while doing so. Again, very easy.

Levels are also extremely short, barely 10 minutes at best and it doesn't really make a difference if they got different paths or have chests - which, by the way, can't be opened if you're seen by the enemy - You'll just want them to be over for the exp.

And now the second big issue: the story and how it's presented, which is very poor quality and overall extremely slow-paced.

Don't get me wrong, the game does have some quality in it: practically all cutscene are voiced acted with pretty good English VA (there's JP too) and I could recognize some known VA in there too (Patrick Seitz, Wendee Lee, Greg Chun, Jamieson Price, Cherami Leigh and many more) so in that regard, they clearly spent time and effort.
But the game is RIDDLED with cutscenes and especially at the start you WILL sit down and watch at least a dozen of cutscenes in a row, so get ready to see a lot of cutscenes - with many not being really good.

To put this in perspective, I played this game for about 50 hours, practically at the final chapter (the 12th chapter if you count the prologue and finale as chapters) and of those 50 hours I can guarantee half is just cutscenes, while the rest is playing the missions or grinding ragnites for upgrading your weapons - which is probably the most boring, unfun method of upgrading your weapons in the game as it basically forces you to replay missions over and over...and yes you WILL grind a lot for those upgrades!

The bottom line is, the balance between story and gameplay is ruined due to having too many cutscenes but not enough gameplay: in VC you could spend over an hour in a match to finish it, commanding troops and making sure you win without losing any members, but a match in VR only lasts 10 minutes at best (slightly more if you do bosses). And it's a shame because I think the story if done better, could have made this game a little better and worth its time but as it is it feels...unpolished rather than rushed.

Do I recommend it? Considering the slow pace and the "not so fun" combat" it's really hard to, especially when you can get better action RPGs for the same price (like Ys 8) and it's also set in a different world (there's no Gallia and the Valkyria is also different) which makes this game completely separated from the main games in the series and a tough sell for any fans.

If you're VERY curious and can find it dirt cheap, give it a shot and see for yourself, but I would recommend a skip instead and look elsewhere.

    Combat

Unfortunately it really does suffer from a problem of having to mash x repeatedly, though it is more or less by habit. Though in reality you only need to mash x for normal attack every few seconds since pressing the x button once automatically does a 3 attack combo unless you get interrupted by been hit by a heavy attack among others. This seem to be the most efficient way to attack since alchemy skill costs too much to use repeatedly and the enemy has very high hp. - however, i have to mention that i didnt spend the time to grind after mid game. I gave up. Its just too much. In one battle i took 51 minutes to win because im a bad player, AI is horrifyingly bad, gets killed all the time so i have to go and revive them and my weapons doesnt produce much damage and the enemy's attack is strong and attacks very frequently. I had to dodge most of the time and the time its open to attack when it will actually take damage, the window is very very small. You'll probably fare better if you have higher stats and just soak the damage from the boss for some at tacks. I have to also admit I didnt opt for a party with efficient configuration for damage. I just chose characters I like and I wasnt able to configure the AI very well so its mostly single character dealing damage - me. jumping between characters is also not very easy because the action gauge.

Alchemy skills for some reason freeze time when you are casting. I disagree with this treatment but it does make things alot easier.

    Equipment & Skills

Gear - (Jacket, gloves, etc...) interesting system but dont it feels like effect is very limited. You can use materials to order new gear using 3 materials. Each material you use provides an effect. the gear itself has no other effects. It feels almost useless. There is an RNG system to the value of the effects that makes things very annoying and grindy if you want better gear.

There are 4 classes, 11 characters each with a different weapon and weapon upgrade tree for skill rank and other buffs. The skill trees are large, expensive to upgrade. Combined with a total of 11 characters it makes the game incredibly grindy and only 2 or 3 missions for you to grind which can get really boring. You will want to get through it as efficiently as possible.

You can sprint - with incredible speed or absolutely insane speed if you have a speed buff.
    You can dodge.
You attack by using normal attack, pressing x. Using secondary weapons you get choice of two to carry with you, each has ammo limits. Then there's alchemy skills which you obtain by drops - enemies have a chance to drop a quartz or crystal called ragnite. There are many many different ragnites. Unfortunately there arent that many varieties compared to sheer quantity. There are 4 main classes - fire, earth, water, wind and a special class for special skills for the main characters - only 3 skills all together, 2 is unlocked early for one character. the other is unlocked just before the very last stage of the game. For the main skill classes, each ragnite has a rank value and may have special buffs(boons) attached. Depending on the buff(boon) and rank, the exp it provides when used to enhance the weapon of your character is different. The values are too low and the difference between what different ragnites offers is way too low. This makes upgrading weapon and selecting a huge pain. This is particularly a problem when the upgrade tree is so large, cost feels high and there are so many characters.

Ragnites have tiers separated by rank. The different tiered ragnites have a different name but essentially the same skill, the skills that provides a buff gets an added buff and higher values. The attack skills just provides higher values. The difference in values between the ranks and tiers are quiet small but it still does makes a difference once there's a large gap between the ranks. The numbers should really be reworked.

is possible to get through the game without using very much of it. So the lazy people ignore it and dont bother to learn the game and just mash their way through. Basically for those people you need to raise the difficulty level and force tactical choices. The game is still very enjoyable to play though.

Missions should be of moderate length with more rewards and less repetitive requirement. Would prefer a bigger map option in the missions.

Story telling technique is very good. Good details and background. Music is well done. Good gameplay system, a step towards real time combat but the opponents needs to be a bit smarter.

I was a fan of the anime, watched a friend play the original series thought it was ok. I am now a fan of the series and will be following it.

Well, this one is hard to review, even from the perspective of someone who likes story-based games.

First of all, this game is not very interactive. You'll spend most of your time watching the story progress through cutscenes. There's no decisions you can make that change the way the story progresses. You just go on battle missions every once and a while between cutscenes. As long as

As long as you're okay with that, you might find the story interesting. Overall, I'd say it's average per JRPG standards. It's a war story from the perspective of the few people who instigated the war.

At first, they throw a lot of story and character information at you at once that makes things confusing, but after I got past the first few hours, I understood what was going on and was genuinely interested. But depending on how intelligent you like your stories, you might find the ending incredibly disappointing. For me, it didn't make a lot of sense and wasn't very believable. I'd say the ending events are more appropriate for teens or for people who don't mind "power of friendship" moments or silly motivations.

The characters are good overall, but their designs and outfits are a little inconsistent. My biggest issue with the character designs is the watermelon-shaped/sized breasts on the main villain. Every time the camera focused on those breasts, I was pulled out of the story and thought to myself that these balloons were added because they didn't have enough confidence in the story for it to carry itself, and they needed help from some comically-oversized-breast lovers.

Dialogue in the game is slow and repetitive. This definitely isn't the game for you if you don't like to hear everyone's opinions in a group in at least two different ways before they move on to the next topic. It's bearable if you're interested in the story, but can quickly become old and boring if you're not.

I don't care about combat in games unless it distracts from the experience and that's unfortunately the case here. Combat is action-based and is too easy for the most part. Its like all of the enemies think they're in a Valkyria Chronicles game, so they're behind cover and mostly immobile while you just run in with swords and slaughter them all. The boss fights, on the other hand, are long and repetitive. Boss fights mostly consist of doing the same attacks over and over for 10-20 minutes.

The game would have benefitted a lot from simply copying the combat system from Valkyria Chronicles or by removing the combat system completely, leaving this as only a story book game.

As for bonus and side-content, there's several side-stories to view that unlock at certain parts of the main story. They're primarily character-background pieces, which you can view if you're interested in those characters. After being disappointed by the ending, I had no interest in viewing these.

the story of the game is the strong point, the combat is lackluster, and the reason why im giving it a 4 is when nearing the end you have to fight Gilouche i got bugged out twice, his hp stays at 0
and not in the mood to redo this again, as you have to clear 2 stages again before you reach him.
tough luck but overall i would have given it a solid 7... have to watch the ending somewhere online :p

The complaints about this game are completely unjusitified. The story is truely amazing. If i had to compare it to something it would be persona 5. It has a similiar feeling of 5 people manipulating things behind the scenes to get justice. Except in this game it also has a world war 1 feeling to it. The story telling is not for most. It is very long spoken. But if you like a good storyThe complaints about this game are completely unjusitified. The story is truely amazing. If i had to compare it to something it would be persona 5. You realise how good that actually is. Its phenomenal story telling and presentation. Along with combat that quite frankly improves upon the slow paced nature of the previous games. All in all. It is a grest package. I loved it

For all its many faults, the script does at least make a valiant effort of recognising and explaining the politics of war and propaganda. That doesn’t change the fact that there’s an army of games more worthy of your money. [October 2017, p75]

I can’t praise Valkyria Revolution‘s story enough. It’s a clear-eyed meditation on the horrors of war – even, perhaps especially, justified war. If the developers had found a way to make the dreary, repetitive combat as worthwhile as the story that frames it, this would have been an incredible game.
