A beautifully presented HD update of a PS3 tactical RPG. It's one of those anime-style games that you seem to spend as much time watching as playing, but the slightly corny cut scenes are mercifully skippable and the turn-based tactical stages are quite enjoyable if you like this type of thing. It doesn't have anything like the depth of XCOM or Advance Wars but it's a good example of the genre.

This is the best of the Valkyria games. The story is long but sweet. Its art and cut scenes are well made. Its literally a turn-based FPS! The cut scenes are skippable if you aren't into that sort of thing. It's a movie, game, FPS, RPG, and turn-based. There is nothing not to love.

Es un juego muy bello, hecho con gran pasión, que yo podría decir que es arte hecha videojuego, esa estética es sin igual, el gameplay es muy bueno.

It's an excellent game. Very good story, the length of the game is adequate (around 40h and I didn't try the "expert" skirmishes). The DLC that comes for free in this edition is also very nice.

I'm not giving a 10 because you can just save at every action, which undermines any randomness in hits (why not just remove randomness then and have sure fires instead of saving/loading to get it

I'm not giving a 10 because you can just save at every action, which undermines any randomness in hits (why not just remove randomness then and have sure fires instead of saving/loading to get it right?). Of course, you can argue, well don't save. That's correct, but later battles can take a very long time and one misstep or **** landmine can have a great consequence. If you want the best experience, I'd say save from time to time, but don't abuse it.

Anyway, buy the game if you like strategy. I haven't played XCOM yet, but I guess this game is an easier version of it.

This Sega's strategic game it's simply a masterpiece, originally released on 2008 and remastered for PS4 at 1080p/60 fps.
The gameplay has interesting mechanics combining turn base strategy with manual control of the units to get more attached to them. You can also level up your units on a RPG system and buy them better equipment. Every member of your squad has also his pros and cons.

Story wise this game is more "local" than for example the 4th entry of the saga, fighting exclusively on your homeland to defend it from an Empires' invasion and uses static dialogs and cinematics that resemble an Anime made with the game engine.
The lore is really interesting emulating a 2th world war on a fictional and more medievalish Europa with some serious topics like political alliances and racial cleansing.
I also really liked the characters, specially Alicia a strong resourceful, brave woman that it's also sweet and feminine, IMO "modern" screenwriters could learn a lot about her and how to write female chars.

Graphically it looks less blurry than the original and the CANVAS engine still looks good, the only negative point is that the static background art images look aliased and weird on 4K screens.

It includes also all the DLC's and they are a fine add on as you can unlock powerful weapons for the main game and put yourself on the role of an imperial soldier under the command of Selvaria (an interesting enemy commander) humanizing the imperial army.

On the negative side I think that the rank system to reward you after a mission is broken as it only considers how many turns you needed to complete a level pushing you to do some "suicidal runs" to get the best ranks

In summary, one of the best strategy games you can play on a PS4, For Gallia!!

It is the ultimate version of the game including the DLCs. I would describe the game as an epic strategic RPG set in a fictional version of our Europe in 1935. I would describe the game as an epic strategic RPG set in a fictional version of our Europe in 1935. The mixture of good tactical battles, great characters and an immersive story won me over. Story: There is a war ongoing in (fictional) Europe between the superpowers of the East European Imperial Alliance (Where Russia is in our world) and the Atlantic Federation (Where Europe is in our world). While the Empire had an advantage early on because of technological superiority it is becoming more of a stagnant war. On the borders of both lies the neutral principality of Gallia (Like Swiss but in the region of Lithuania in our world). Because it is rich on resources especially on the precious Ragnite the Empire plans to capture it. The emperor himself will lead this operation while the other war is still ongoing. It is the story of the Militia Squad 7 from Gallia with leaders Welkin Guther who will participate in the war and have a significant part in it. The story is well written with twists and a mix of sad and joyful moments. It has one of the saddest moments in video game history for me. It does neither glorify war nor trivialize the causalities. You will see what conflicts are made of, injustice, discrimination, that good and bad people exist on both sides of conflicts and that freedom is not free. The characters are amazing. They all feel like they were real and alive. For the main characters there is a lot of development and progression. They growth, get scars by war and evolve. Also your squad members can die in battle and there is no chance to get them back (except New Game +). The gameplay is a mixture of development of your squad including equipment / weapons and tactical RPG. For the first you get experience points for battles (Better performance = more experience) and money. For the experience you can improve your squad and for the money improve your equipment. There are other benefits but you will get used to it without me describing them. In the battles you have turns and a limited amount of actions per turn (Officers add some if deployed). You see your units in a map and chose one. Now you are in a third person view and can maneuver them and take one action. Beware as enemies in shooting range will attack, movement range declines if used multiple times per turn, extra weapons like hand grenades are limited and you should end your turns covered as when you finish the enemy will do the same on their turn. There is more to it as you have different classes, a tank, obstacles and multiple approaches are often possible. The missions are interesting and you will have a lot of challenges in the game. The story and characters are well woven into them and make this excellent. The graphics are unique. The game looks like a water colour painting. It aged surprisingly well and I would like to buy an artbook for it. The soundtrack is amazing but mostly in a sneakingly way. It took me a while to recognize how good and fitting it is. Overall the game is impressive and an insider tip and hidden gem for all RPG and strategic game fans. Beware that it can be a bit challenging and will have sad moments. It is easily a 10/10 for me and it created a successful franchise because it was so good and unique. Expand

The setting and graphic design are awesome - the storybook look is unique and a welcome change from the norm. I won't dive too deep into mechanics for such an old game. The only nitpick is that the game still suffers from occasional set-pieces that force your hand in strategy, and may cause some frustration. This is the kind of game that sometimes you have to put down for a while. But the genius is that the way the game is structured is very bite-sized so it's easy to pick up after a break.

The fire emblem series are fair throughout with some minor cheapness using reinforcements that appear out of nowhere. This game seems to have too many cheap moments of reinforcements to make the game difficult and this bores me silly. The game seems purposely designed around the cheapness rather than true rpg strategy. This is more a game of play, learn (memorize what will appear out of nowhere and proactively avoid and pre plan (cheat) next time). And this is the ultimate failure of the game. You do not utilize real strategy you try the game learn what's gonna happen then work around it more wisely the next try if necessary. It is a fun game but it loses its satisfaction and becomes boring. I will say the game does a fantastic job with artwork and personality but combat wise I'm pretty disappointed since I'm a gamer who prefers not to cheat whilst gaming and this game really makes you cheat to beat it. Everything in this title, from the god-awful immersion of the universe—Ie what's supposed to be the Axis using Char B1's, the creators of this game thinking the blitzkrieg was done by shock troopers instead of perfect conjunction between CAS and armored divisions, and the immense amount of contrivances from the first hour for the special snowflake protagonist made me had to a break right off the bat—to the 'combat' which gives horrible flashbacks of bullet sponges from Fallout 4.

I could go on, I really could, but I doubt this review is going to read on this old remaster. If you want actual strategy and game play, keep on browsing, but if you want a restart-fest akin to Fire Emblem Awakening on Lunatic...? Yeah, good luck with that.

The gameplay is fun, but it doesn't really give you as many tactical options as it should in certain missions and the mechanic of enemies being able to shoot you when you are trying to move your squad mates around takes a lot of getting used to - though it is quite difficult to have any of your team members actually killed instead of just knocked out - so the only real danger is of losing the mission entirely due to having too many of your guys KO'd, or having your tank taken out by a lucky shot to the weak spot. I think I would have enjoyed this game much more if I'd played it before Xcom, but seeing as I didn't the gameplay and tactics that you can use seem a bit simple in comparison - though I understand that the mechanics behind both games are vastly different - I just think Xcom offers a better experience for squad oriented, turn based shooters.

However, it is a very nice game and definitely worth the £16 price tag on PSN if you're looking for something that is entirely different to the conventional gaming experience.

Really good game that has turned me on to this type of game. It's turn based war strategy, but with you taking third-person control of each unit. It's really engrossing and even though the story is cheesy, you still get involved in it. You will have your favourite troops that will die and some gritty battles that you almost lose- it's tense and fun. Totally recommend it.

I am not going to argue that the story is boring, the cutscenes are poorly done and so on. I do think that this is true, but many people seem to like it so I wouldn't focus on that very much. The biggest problem with this game is the combat and how poor the mechanics are. First of all you will go into each battle with little idea on whom to bring with you and as this is important you can find yourself in a bad situation and need to restart. You will get a B if you play well and try to enjoy yourself if you want an A make all scouts and storm the enemy camp. So let me ask you, does that seem like a good mechanic to you were most of the time most of your soldiers are useless? Also, actually attacking is a disadvantage as enemies can shoot you endlessly while you approach, hence killing you and this is automatic and happens all the time (unless you flank). Also, it says they stop firing at you as soon as you aim, but no they can still get a few many shots in before the system kicks in also helping in the killing you part. Hiding behind cover is overpowered for enemies, as what was killing an enemy after 2 hits now becomes 20 hits so good luck and basically no unit can kill them in one go (so they will return fire). I have just started this nothing yet and I assume you can see that the strategy part of this game is messed so I'll summarize:
    - all but scouts and engineers move a very shot running distance making it a pain to move them.
    - as a result you will find having only half you team doing something as you can select the same person multiple times (run multiple times).
    - enemies can appear in the story parts in which you have no chance of defending (not letting anyone die) unless you knew of this before hand.
    - You get significantly less turns than the enemy making it feel unfair in many battles.
    - too be honest the difficulty is not that high (pretty easy) you just need to replay almost each encounter twice if you want good results.
    - most classes feel pointless based on type of battle.
    - no real progression, no new weapons/armor unless you do something special and upgrades are not that good.
    - Need to memorize who likes who and what their stupid weaknesses and strengths are (you need to memorize this in before battle cuz you wont see it during the battle).
    - Can't tell who are leaders in your party unless you are already in battle (gives extra moves).
    - if you liked xcom like me, just know this is nothing a like that, the strategy part here is almost none existent. All you need is the knowledge of how the enemy will move as they are very predictable after they use their cheap trick, which you cannot defend against at first.

    DO NOT BUY IT!!!!!

The story line was "so, so" I did however care a bit and have a decent attachment to most of the characters by the end. Which was a huge suprise since the beginning of the game is a corn fest.

Very enjoyable RPG turn based strategy game. The story is nice though not really unqiue. The characters have some depth, though they are a bit on the shallow side. The game is addicting, and makes you want to play more to find out what happens. The only minus is that enemy turn is unskipable, and with large enough enemies it takes ages for the enemy to play.

I remember being tempted by this game back when it was originally released back in 2008 but opted against it for some reason but it caught my eye again in the ps store and it though what the heck lets give it a try.

And i am very glad that i did as it is top quality story based strategy game, likeable characters and the HD remake looks stunning.

Beautiful graphics & Art Style - One of the many things that stands out in Valkyria Chronicles is its visuals. I love how they went with a anime/manga style with the game. It shows (and proves) that art style is important and that (to me that is) art style can more then make up for the lack of fancy graphics that the majority (but not all of them) of triple A have (or push).

Solid gameplay - While it was difficult the first time I play this (gotten use to it now) I like how Valkyria Chronicles combine three different style of gameplay. First you have your RPG part in which after each battle you earn experience points to level up your class (scouts, shock troopers, lancers, engineers and snipers) and money to upgrade your armor, weapons and your tank. Then you have your strategy (turn base strategy that is) part in which you move your troops to attack or move them to a certain spot (if an enemy is moving towards you your scouts, shock troopers, engineers and tank will automatically attack them if they are in range of your unit & tank. Bear in mind the enemy can do the same thing though) and last but not least we have the 3rd person mode in which you use your action points (AP) & Command points (CP) to move your unit or tank. When you attack time pauses and you go into a 3rd person view to shoot you target (try to aim for the enemy head). Be warn though even time you use the same individual (units use 1 CP while tanks use 2) you have less AP to use giving you limited movement (your AP refills after each turns and any CP that wasn’t use will be added when your turn comes up).

Easy leveling up - Another thing I like about Valkyria Chronicles is that ability to level up your class not the individual. For example if you level up you scouts then all your scouts in your squad are automatically level up. If you buy a upgraded weapon & armor for your scouts then all of your scouts will have that upgraded weapon & armor. For me this is good because it helps cut down on the grinding (you can play some skirmishes that help give you more money & experience point).

Great Story & Soundtrack - This is the one big area that has attracted me to the series. I love how they use World War 2 as a inspiration for this game (not to mention WW2 theme movie and shows like Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and others as well) and while there is a bit of fan service. There a scene where squad goes to the beach and one of the main characters is wearing the most tight and somewhat revealing (that how I see it) bikini and one of the main villains feature is her large chest however unlike a game like Senran Kagura fan service isn’t really the main selling point (not that I have anything against fan service). The music & the voice acting are definitely spot on (I love the mood the music set for the game).

Good deal - For $30 this isn’t bad. You’ll getting the whole game that now runs at 1080p at 60fps plus you’ll also getting all the DLC and patches that were release when the game came out back in 2008.

    Cons

Pacing - Unlike a game like Doom (which is a fast pace game) Valkyria Chronicles is more about going at a slow pace, taking your time and strategizing on when is the right moment to attack. In other words if you are going into this game expecting it to be fast pace like Doom or expecting it to be like COD or Battlefield then your in for a big disappointment because that not the kind of game Valkyria Chronicles is.

Cut scenes (lots and lots of them) - While the cut scene and the story are really good at the same time (for some people) it can drag on and get annoying. In other words before you can get to a new level you have to go through several cut scene. This might upset some people who want to dive into the gameplay because you have to watch these cut scenes before you get to the next level (however there is a way around that. During the cut scenes just press the option button on your PS4 controller and you’ll skip that cut scenes. While it won’t solve the problem it certainly helps).

Overall - Valkyria Chronicles to this day remains one of my personal favorite (and its on my list of the greatest videogames I’ve played) when it originally came out back in 2008 and its still is today. While the story might feel like it’s dragging on (for some people) thanks to the cut scenes it doesn’t ruin the game. If you miss it the first time around I would highly recommend you pick it up this time. I do hope this game does well this time around because I would love for SEGA to bring Valkyria Azure Revolution here to the west.

Valkyria chronicles remastered captures the essence of the original now in 1080p, 60fps and just as new. While the remaster was done well, I expected 2 and a localized version of 3 to go along with it.

This game is in one word FANTASTIC. I'm expecting a new one in the short term and also I'd love to see Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 remade for the PS4. In fact, Valkyria Chronicles 2 it's in my personal all time top five rank, even if it was only released as a minor game exclusive for the PSP. Get it, give it some time to check that lenghty tutorial and then only enjoy

Everything that made this game special is that much better on the ps4. This game truly innovates its genre of tactical RPGs with genuine and unique quality traits not found in any other game before it. I was impressed with this game way back when it came out on the ps3 so long ago, and I'm even more impressed that they brought it back and boosted it up to be an even better of a game then it was back then. Can't wait for the "sequel," or "spiritual successor" if you will, that will come most likely next year. If you are a fan of tactics ogre or final fantasy tactics, this is your game! Any fan of RPGs, especially tactical RPGs, will fall in love with this title. It has so much to offer and the story and plot, as well as combat system and gameplay, will leave you begging for more. Although Valkyria Chronicles Remastered isn't the most fully featured rerelease, it's nonetheless an excellent way of experiencing a classic. Valkyria Chronicles is every bit as good as it was last generation and reminds us how desperately we want new entries in the series. If you haven't played through Squad 7's story yet, that's a mistake you should correct as soon as possible.
