This game seems to be heavily inspired by the fire emblem series and somewhere in there seems to share similar aspects of the xcom game build. I don't think anyone can argue this is a beautiful looking game but many aspects of the combat are quite bad. I don't think anyone can argue this is a beautiful looking game but many aspects of the combat are quite bad. The fire emblem series are fair throughout with some minor cheapness using reinforcements that appear out of nowhere. This game seems to have too many cheap moments of reinforcements to make the game difficult and this bores me silly. The game seems purposely designed around the cheapness rather than true rpg strategy. This is more a game of play, learn (memorize what will appear out of nowhere and proactively avoid and pre plan (cheat) next time). And this is the ultimate failure of the game. You do not utilize real strategy you try the game learn what's gonna happen then work around it more wisely the next try if necessary. It is a fun game but it loses its satisfaction and becomes boring. I will say the game does a fantastic job with artwork and personality but combat wise I'm pretty disappointed since I'm a gamer who prefers not to cheat whilst gaming and this game really makes you cheat to beat it. I bought this game a few days ago and its quite enjoyable, but not exactly what I was expecting. The art style is very nice and unique and the story is charming though slow paced and sometimes rather cheesy. The gameplay is fun, but it doesn't really give you as many tactical options as it should in certain missions and the mechanic of enemies being able to shoot you when you are trying to move your squad mates around takes a lot of getting used to - though it is quite difficult to have any of your team members actually killed instead of just knocked out - so the only real danger is of losing the mission entirely due to having too many of your guys KO'd, or having your tank taken out by a lucky shot to the weak spot. I think I would have enjoyed this game much more if I'd played it before Xcom, but seeing as I didn't the gameplay and tactics that you can use seem a bit simple in comparison - though I understand that the mechanics behind both games are vastly different - I just think Xcom offers a better experience for squad oriented, turn based shooters.

However, it is a very nice game and definitely worth the £16 price tag on PSN if you're looking for something that is entirely different to the conventional gaming experience.

A beautifully presented HD update of a PS3 tactical RPG. It's one of those anime-style games that you seem to spend as much time watching as playing, but the slightly corny cut scenes are mercifully skippable and the turn-based tactical stages are quite enjoyable if you like this type of thing. It doesn't have anything like the depth of XCOM or Advance Wars but it's a good example of the genre.

Although Valkyria Chronicles Remastered isn't the most fully featured rerelease, it's nonetheless an excellent way of experiencing a classic. Valkyria Chronicles is every bit as good as it was last generation and reminds us how desperately we want new entries in the series. If you haven't played through Squad 7's story yet, that's a mistake you should correct as soon as possible.

Despite not enough change from the original to entice retired militia vets, there's more than enough to recommend greenhorns sign up. [July 2016, p.81]
