Puzzles are complex, especially if you go and try to discover every level's secrets. My kids 12 and 8 had some trouble to clear some of the puzzles (and needed help), a good thinking exercise IMO.
The game's length is perfect, without unnecessary repetitions to make it last longer. If you are a trophy hunter, then you have many many hours of good fun.
Congrats to the developer, I am glad to have supported they work (and it came at a decent price usd 20,00).

You have to play this game at least once. Reminds me of Little Big Planet and Limbo, with a soundtrack inspired by Journey. Though it borrows from those amazing games, it throws in new ways of solving puzzles with yarn limitations. It's clever, cute, very nice to look at, and enjoyable to play. Well worth the 20 bucks!

Story is you are Yarny and it's up to you to explore the world and find memories (both good and bad) to place in your scrap book, first starting from the happy worry free child hood to the inevitable horror of reality, which is emphasized more with your size as small trivial things become huge obstacles to think around. One way or another you're going to have a warm feeling in your heart when playing the game (more so if you made a Yarny doll!). Expand

What a great game. It's absolutely beautiful, in terms of graphics, animation, sound, foley, music and especially plot. I will admit that the gameplay is a little simple, but really, it's so so so so beautifully put together that I can't give it less than a 10.

The platforming is really good fun and the puzzles offer a decent challenge in places whilst always remain logical within the context of the game. Add to this a subtly told but affecting story and you have a memorable experience that all gamers should play.

Unraveled is a beautiful platformer with all the feels. The game is gorgeous, like a playable Pixar movie. Yarns is incredibly emotive and lifelike. The motion capture and animation are amazingly well done. This game is every bit current gen.

The platforming is inspired. Yarny can use his yarn as a lasso to climb, swing, and repel. The levels are all based on nature or at least things like natural things. The same is true of the objects used to solve puzzles. Most of the puzzles are intuitive and explained through gameplay and without dialogue or question mark boxes. Some of the challenges in the game are on the upper end of difficulty, but the game spaces these out with some more relaxed platforming sequences. The difficulty is no issue for any Mario fans.

The story in the game is wonderfully told in very subtle ways. There is a rare substance to Unravel, and this game rivals platforming favorites like Limbo. You will care about Yarny, yet Yarny's story is part of a larger and very human tale.

The quality of this game makes me question the reviews for it. I recall some reviewers said the mechanics were not very solid or the puzzles were too difficult. The mechanics are so simple that my 8 year old daughter master them by the end of the first level. The puzzles can be a bit obtuse, but they are all based on physics and the interaction of objects that behave like real life objects. None will stump you for long. I think this is the case of reviewer bias. The game looks beautiful so it can't play beautiful, right? Well let me tell you that it can and does. I highly recommend Unraveled and concise it one of the best releases of 2016.

If Indiana Jones were four inches tall, made of red yarn and in search of a bunch of family pictures and fibrous pendants instead of relics he would be the protagonist of Coldwood Interactive’s newest game. Unravel is an offering that can be put into the same general category as gems like Journey, Broken Age and Entwined.

    Here’s why.

Likely many players first takeaway will be of the varied, nearly seamless environmental interactions. Whether using a kite, scrapyard magnet, fishing tackle or a grimy, faded alphabet block, there’s no shortage of new objects to utilize in order to adventure onward. While most of these experiences are based in the realm of common-sense and easily solvable, other puzzles suffer from lack of refinement. (Be prepared to turn down your volume during a scene involving a car crusher.)

Graphically, Unravel is nothing short of visual velvet. During one of the later levels I caught myself staring at a blizzard as it swirled, swam and played within chaotic wind streams—all at 60 frames per second. An earlier beach stage showcasing waves ebbing and flowing into the screen were equally mesmerizing. There isn’t much about this game that isn’t a treat for the ol’ ocular organs. I especially enjoyed the shallow depth of field focus effect.

    The heart.

Unravel’s core is a thing of magic. I could almost hear the cicadas in chorus on the old farm I lived on when I was a kid. I could almost smell fresh baked cookies as I ran across the field to the backyard after a long day of fort building. But it’s more than specific memories. Unravel delivers players to some universal place, connecting us all in a common warmth. There were quite a few times where I felt like crawling inside the screen, lying on the ground and staring into the sky. (Looking at [through] you, virtual reality.)

I have to admit, at one point I did feel a bit betrayed. As though I had signed up for a snowy weekend skiing at a lodge but instead was being ushered to a rally against deforestation caused by slopes and tourism. A level playing host to barrels of toxic waste, pools of pollution and environmental destruction decimated my great outdoors fantasy world. Thankfully, after this one stage the suspicion that the game was going in a ‘protest-y’ direction subsided. Even though a darker tone was still apparent throughout the remainder of the game it didn’t feel as out-of-place as whatever Toxi-copia was meant to add to the story.

    The sounds.

Sound can be as enrapturing and important as visual detail is for VR. Trickling water, dozens of tiny mosquito wings buzzing, pebbles and stones cascading down a mountain all were crisp and convincing. The only issue I had is with the sometimes repetitive music. Fortunately, this issue only existed on a couple of stages and did little in taking away from the overall experience. (I can’t help but imagine the work of Alexandre Desplat grandly fitting with a few of levels.)

Yeah, some of the puzzles can be solved ‘accidently’ or unintentionally, the soundtrack can be monotonous and stage or two seems out of place but these shortcomings do little to take away from the overall charm and tranquility Yarny’s escapade possesses. In the end, Unravel is a clean, joyful frolic to a place that bridges the heart and imagination. It might not be as cherished as thatgamecompany’s Journey but it certainly comes close. If early indicators are correct I have a feeling we’re going to see less racing and recreation and more adventure and emotion from the team at Coldwood Interactive.

Such an enjoyable game. It's beautifully made with such detail that on an aesthetic level it almost treads a line between game and art, together with the sound design it's quite therapeutic to play.

In terms of gameplay it's challenging enough to keep you going but not so complex that it becomes stressful to work through - having said that, there is the odd time they could have amped up the difficulty ever so slightly (but this is a minor complaint).

Honestly, my only real problem is that there's not enough of it, I'm finding myself putting down the controller for no other reason than to ration out the levels a bit.

I can't see them making a sequel - it's not that kind of game - but I really hope they do so I can spend more time with Yarny. You never know, they could even throw in a friend for him with some puzzles that need two people to solve.

    - Excellent music. Those violins will tear your heart out. Whether upbeat, downtrodden or playfully scared, the music was always tonally perfect, and I could easily listen to this soundtrack outside the game.
    - A nearly wordless story that hits much harder than expected. Told through a slowly revealed scrapbook, Unravel weaves the tale of a woman's life, from her childhood to old age, and by the end it hits home perfectly
    - The visuals match the story. As the game gets more difficult emotionally, the environments become darker, with more rain and snow. The final level in particular was so perfectly tuned in visuals and control that it pushed the story further
    - The difficulty of the puzzles is well paced, increasing at a good rate
    - The physics of the interactable objects feel heavy and real, adding to the tangible look and feel of the game

    Cons:
    - The early story is a bit boring, and may not grasp many
    - Swinging can be cumbersome, occasionally not feeling responsive
    - Collectables for the sake of collectables

Unravel is a small team title that has better production value that many AAA titles. VIsually, musically and emotionally, this title is on point. The gameplay is solid and tactile, nothing to write home about, but not detracting from this game's strengths. At a 5 hour run time, there is no reason not to give this game a full go.

How much depends on rain or wind. You will appreciate this warm heat from the stove which heats your feet, while behind the window everything that is alive struggles for survival.
Of course, the core of the game is the puzzles. The puzzles are based not only on the mechanics of the string, but also on the opening of the collapses, bulkheads with overflowing water or rolling snowballs. The way we get further in the level is obviously somehow arbitrary, but it is clear that the game is rather linear. It's as linear as your memory is able to remember the solution to all the puzzles. Me after the game and returning to the first levels again I had fun. The levels are quite long and the first pass of each of them can take up to 40 minutes, which in the scale of the game is already quite a good result. Additionally, 'find' is found on the levels. To collect them also we have to pile on. For this we have challenges based on special behavior on a given level. For example, in one of them we have to precipitate snow from all available branches in one pass. The fun end is to finish each level without error. This is extremely difficult because Yarn does not like high altitude or water that quickly soars and immediately sinks. So we have 4 levels of challenges that we face before, and that is why it is so great to play the same level a few times.
Balanced puzzles, beautiful graphics, calm classical music and perfect narration. It's how well all these aspects combine to make it an excellent game. It may not be too long. You will feel awkward, but is not that the right length for a poem? You will always have time to read it again and again. For what I sincerely encourage.

There are a few puzzles that require a bit too much lateral thinking (as opposed to logical).
