I've been a huge fan of the Uncharted games since the first one launched on PS3 and have eagerly played each new release as they came out (I actually really enjoyed Golden Abyss too). After the (well deserved success) of The Last of Us I was worried about Uncharted 4 and whether Naughty Dog could deliver a more comical adventure after crafting such a dark world in TLoU. Upon playing the game it appears my fears were unfounded. I have played a lot of the game so far but am yet to finish it so I may come back and update this review but so far I am enjoying the game a lot. The tone is a lot darker than previous games but ND still manage to make certain situations with their characters light and comedic as the series should. Seeing the characters that I have spent nearly 10 years with on screen again is a bittersweet joy as this may be the last time they appear in an Uncharted game (Sony will undoubtedly continue the franchise sans Drake)

The gameplay has seen a vast improvement over past games as well, cover and shooting feels great and the traversal mechanics are even better and more fluid. Having recently replayed the Nathan Drake collection on PS4 it's immediately apparent how much Naughty Dog has learned from and improved upon those games as well as from The Last of Us. There are issues, I've had a couple of moments where the AI has walked into walls etc and there are more than a few frustrating combat encounters where the game balance feels unfair but nothing has detracted from my experience to the point where I've wanted to stop playing. I feel like the sliding mechanic is a bit over used as well and while the grapple hook is an excellent addition to the game, it sort of makes you wonder why Nathan never brought it along in his past adventures, especially since it's used in an earlier flashback so it's not like it was a new concept to him.

I've also played a little of the Multiplayer and while as per previous games it is just a light distraction from the main game, I have had a lot of fun - me and my Sister have enjoyed many hours in the multiplayer in Uncharted 3 and I think the same will prove true of this game as well. I've seen some people complaining about the way appearance items are given out, while the whole micro-transactions thing is getting a little old now I don't think this is any worse than how a game like Team Fortress gives out items and I think it's quite a cool way to keep people playing the game, I've only played a few matches but I've already unlocked a couple of new characters and some amusing accessories.

All in all I am having a great time with Uncharted 4, it feels to me like an excellent send off for he franchise. But I can't say I'm not completely unbiased as a fan of the series but I thought I'd give my opinion on the game.

Without a doubt the finest graphics so far this gen, by a fair distance as well. Gameplay is very much Uncharted, the gunplay feels tighter. Usual Naughty Dog excellent story telling and immersion. Can't really fault the game other than a couple of very minor annoyances.

It's a credit to Naughty Dog how well this runs, considering how glorious it looks.

I knew there would be ignorant people on a review, but I'm appalled at the amount of negatives. This game is a damn good game. I feel like if you played the previous ones you'd be at an advantage obviously, but regardless anyone that appreciates a great story, amazing graphics, and a very fun multi-player it's a must-buy!

This is the best game I've played in years. If you are not an uncharted fan then don't bother reviewing because your opinion doesn't count here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

SIC PARVIS MAGNA. This is the greatness that was born from Uncharted 1-3, this should be the Magnum Opus for action-adventure games that consist of the most coherent of stories. This game, felt like an actual adventure, everything was sparkling with realism. It is gritty, it makes believe. It's inspiring. Never have I felt so inclined to review a video game on a website. Some players may feel disappointed by the lack of over the top set-piece moments, that were present in previous games, and the absence of certain characters. However, again, this is all perfectly justified by the approach Naughty Dog has taken with Uncharted 4. Sure there was a bit of that in there, but when you consider the length, it makes up for really little. The best part of the game was the story, for me it felt more like one of those walking simulators, where you just take in the surroundings and enjoy the story. It was a story I could actually enjoy as well, which is rare for these types of games, the characters were amazing ad the animation made it s believable. Rise of the Tomb Raider just never hit home for me because everyone looks so dead eyed while talking to each other.

I tried to play through the first three games recently and I still hate them, I don't think they were good games. However Uncharted 4 fixes most of the issues I had and then just excels immensely with the story. The only thing I can pick at the game for is how you have to keep giving boosts when you've jumped further than that, you have to keep finding the same looking box with wheels to get up places. Also another weird thing is how you have to keep lifting fallen beams to get through passages, when you can easily fit around three people through at once.

Amazing experience, but I do wish the Neo came before it as you can tell where they cut the corners.. mainly on the character shadows. There is also this weird effect where everything looks like it is made out of thousands of dots, that fades in and out even when objects are really close, like they had to work aggressively on the LoD to get it to look as good as it does on the PS4.

Oh, Naughty Dog. When are you gonna mess up? I'm playing this game, scaling a clocktower while staring over a city in Madagascar. Nothing crazy is happening. I'm not being shot at; I'm not in any particular danger (okay, I'm dangling perilously at the top of a huge-ass clocktower), but I'm having fun. In fact, I'm having an absolute blast.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is not a disappointment by any means, I'll clear that up. In fact, it exceeds expectations. I'll start off with a spoiler-free set-up about the game's main story. Nathan Drake is retired from illegal treasure hunting. He lives with his beautiful wife, Elena, and leads a relatively normal life. That all ends once his brother, Sam Drake, who Nathan thought was dead for 15 years, shows up. Basically Sam is in trouble and needs Nathan's help. I won't tell you why. Nathan reluctantly agrees. I won't tell you why. That's how it all starts. The story starts simple but once it starts, it starts. This was definitely my favorite story of the Uncharted series. It's emotional and I really got sucked in. It was just like The Last of Us where I was sucking in every little detail. The end is great. It didn't have my jaw dropping like The Last of Us, but I did love it. The characters are incredible, and the without the amazing characterization the whole story would've crumbled. I loved Nolan North as Nathan Drake, and Troy Baker's Sam Drake is one of my favorite additions in gaming. Both of their performances are witty and powerful and I can't think of any other people who'd be any better. All other performances are great too. Elena and Sully are back, which is great, but I really liked the villains, Nadine and Rafe. I enjoyed Nadine's badassery a little bit more than Rafe's whineyness at times, but he is definitely not the stereotype I'm used to seeing. Both of their motivations make sense. It's just that I just wish I had seen more of these villains. The thing is, the villains aren't a key to the actual storyline of this game, they are more of a conflict; the occasional bullet barrier between Nathan and his next checkpoint. I'm fine with this because the main story is so brilliant, but I wanted more from the villains sometimes. I wanted more of the villains, especially Nadine.

The relationships between characters are incredible, and most importantly, believable. While you may never encounter marriage issues dealing with treasure hunting, the main themes behind each of them is where I could relate. I loved every onscreen interaction between Nathan and Elena. They are officially my favorite gaming couple, and that's because they are the most believable. Emily Rose's performance helped a lot, but I can see how much the Naughty Dog writing staff cares about these characters that they have spent more that a decade with (if you count how much Drake's Fortune was in production). I wish that Sully was in a bit more of the game, but it would have been forced and unnecessary. What he has right now makes sense. Sam is still just a great and complex character, and his relationship with Nathan really pulled my heartstrings. The flashbacks to when they were kids may slow down the action front, but it helps establish an important connection between two characters in the story. Naughty Dog has become so smart with cinematic storytelling through the years, and the way character relationships are expressed piles onto the evidence as to why.

When it comes to gameplay, the series has been vastly improved. Previous Uncharted shootouts were sometimes a hassle and I didn't always look forward to the long fights that I knew were coming. Not anymore. Uncharted 4's combat is addictive. If you click on my statistics, it may look like I'm one of the worst players of all time. The amount of restarted checkpoints I have is insane. That's really only because I restart encounters just to replay an amazing combat sequence. Melee is great, and the weapons have power. There's just so much more variety to each encounter now, and I noticed this when I saw all of my combat routes. Other Uncharted games had more enclosed combat encounters. Uncharted 4's combat encounters offer much more ways to take down your foes. My favorite is going stealthy. I can see the influences that Naughty Dog took from The Last of Us. I've taken out whole units without being noticed multiple times. I've also destroyed them by going guns blazing when I restart the same encounter, showing just how many options there are. People are also going to love the rope. There's going to be a lot of swinging in the game, and it's pretty damn fun. I have one complaint when it comes to combat and it's that there isn't enough. I wanted more of that amazing gameplay, and I got more platforming than combat. The platforming is terrific, though, so my complaints are trivial.

Stating that the forthcoming game will be the last rendezvous with a popular, charismatic hero is a rare phenomenon. I congratulate Naughty Dog on their courage and in spite of myself keep my fingers crossed for them to stick to their decision. The farewell party they threw for Nate is simply spectacular. This is how I want to remember him, not as an old man who rubbed his joints with pain cream and then found a UFO. Uncharted 4 is a brilliant game and a breathtaking demonstration of what PS4 is capable of. [07/2016, p.56]
