Troll and I has the potential to be a must-play adventure but its lack of fine-tuning makes it an often haphazard experience that'll test your patience more than it provides enjoyment. Here's hoping the developers retool it down the road or perhaps learn from their mistakes and create a more refined sequel because they definitely have a winning formula on their hands.

While the team’s modest size is betrayed by the game’s myriad technical issues, what they’ve attempted here is, quite honestly, laudable. Maybe they’d do well to view this as a functional blueprint for a future project that builds on the good work that’s been accomplished—I know I’ll be waiting for what’s next. Here’s hoping the bugs get patched out and that we eventually get a Troll and I sequel, one that focuses on cleaner controls and a more emotionally engaging story.

Troll and I is a game whose ambition is deflated by a lack of polish and a worrying absence of player guidance. Combat feels serviceable, if a little unsatisfying, and they find good reasons to switch between the two titular protagonists. There’s an endearing story at play but the game itself has enough issues to stifle the most enthusiastic player. Repercussions from poor execution prevent this from being a truly worthwhile experience.

I’m sure that it will find a small audience and fanbase because of its premise, but for me, a lack of overall presentation, a litany of technical pitfalls and average at best gameplay means it’s best to avoid Troll and I – just as you would Troll’s apparent stench.

We were kinda excited about this one, but unfortunately all its good ideas are hidden behind a poor execution. In its current state, it's a game hard to recommend.

There's potential here, but it's hard to bring that into account when the visuals, audio and gameplay are all mediocre or even straightout bad.

I wish I could be more kind to this game, considering it’s an indie title with big ambition, but considering Horizon: Zero Dawn and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out only a few weeks ago, and how similar Troll and I is trying to be to those games, there’s really no excusing it.

A longer development period might have made this into something more playable, but it would still be a game of rehashed concepts notable only for its sheer banality. [May 2017, p.96]

Slapping down poor video games never brings me much pleasure, especially those that genuinely show promise. While it has a unique setting and some solid ideas, boring level design and a general lack of imagination when piecing together all of these components leaves me with very little to praise.

A poorly-done Tomb Raider clone that lacks everything good about that series. Awful combat and stealth mechanics, a boring dead world, and mindless co-op puzzles await all who purchase this. Do yourself a favor and purchase either of the new Tomb Raider games for less than you’d be paying if you bought Troll and I. I’m still shocked they’re trying to charge the exorbitant amount that they are for this buggy, unimpressive adventure.

Throughout, Troll and I often raises the question of just how much testing was done to spot and correct mistakes.

Troll and I is ambitious but rubbish, with flawed mechanics and weak storytelling.

    Troll and I
Full of Moles and Full of Bugs
Troll and I is a puzzle action adventure game where you play as both Otto and a troll he meets during a forest fire after he rushes home to check on his mother…
You spend the rest of the game trying to get back…
I was initially surprised and hopeful when this game started…
It starts with a hunting sequence..
Sadly this sequence is only there to introduce the crafting system...
You get stick to make spears and you take out boars to bring home for dinner…
This of course isn’t what you use the items you get off of the boar though..
But you do use these items to craft your first weapon…
The forest is crawling with all sorts of mole enemies, who’s portals are sealed by using the troll to seal them up…
And you can fight them hand to hand with Otto or with the troll which I advise…
The troll can kill most enemies in a single hit… and Otto’s weapons do break and materials for crafting new weapons are practically nonexistent.. so it’s wise to hold off on using him unless the game absolutely forces you…
But after the games initial hour of about 9 you realize troll and I is about to take you on a long ride…
    Initially things are fine…
I thought wow some little team made a cheap man’s tomb raider meets uncharted game with a troll companion…
I was getting tiny majin and the forsaken kingdom vibes…
And then I hit a point during an uncharted style obstacle where Otto says he can’t hop this gap.. There must be another way…
Instantly I sigh. .think to myself... after all of that…
    Climb down
then I spent a good hour running around this area trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing...
The game gives you quote unquote hints… which are really just reminders of where you’re supposed to be going…
not actually saying hey I should check out that over there… which would’ve been nice many many times during my journey..
Especially in the beginning when I was rolling my eyes thinking great… it’s one of these games…
And I was right... it is one of those games throughout…
A puzzle game that puts you in a massive area to figure out environmental puzzles and remember where things were to come back to them later as the entire map is connected…
The game forces back tracking way too much and you’re in areas far too long… making the overall pacing of this game near unbearable…
The story moves forward at a crawl as you’re climbing around, trying to find items you need to craft spears to break a wall, or running all the way back near the beginning of the game for more shards to make more spears…
materials in general are way too rare to make the crafting system feel satisfying or fun…
you’re just climbing up rocks praying you don’t have to craft something around the corner
Switching back and forth between characters to progress because they annoying don’t automatically follow each other, and when you do the command to come to you… they rarely do or get stuck behind a wall…
You can climb the troll as Otto and walk together.. But many moments in the game you have to split up as Otto disarms troll traps, or has to climb through holes to move an item
this is primarily an Otto game... really only using the troll when you have the solution and are ready to move on…
You can play this game co-op, but the troll isn’t going to have much fun waiting on you…
    and onto the bugs…
For starts the hit detection in combat is garbage…
spears and melee attacks will many times go through enemies… frustrating during the cheap sections of the game where you try to sneak up behind an enemy that instakills you and you’re attacks are doing nothing and you have to restart many minutes back and recollect every item up to that point because the auto saves in this game are trash…
Also I had a few moments where the characters would get stuck on a wall forcing me to back out of the game and back in..And again... deal with the awful auto save losing way too much of my progress…
And the game crashed on me twice…
once during a really annoying bug where the screen starts shaking like a volcano is supposed to go off…
This shaking happened probably 3 or 4 times during my journey to the end…
And finally I wouldn’t necessarily call this a bug, but lazy game development during a boss battle in the game where you have to throw rocks at an enemies stomach to break its shield… after I broke 2 pieces I threw another rock assuming I had to break the rest of it…
And Otto kept yelling that I was almost there.. Keep hitting him… so I did… 30 times... and the battle would not progress….
    Troll and I isn’t a bad game
But it’s not a good game either.
It’s just a game that exists with cool ideas but many many problems
    but mostly, the atrocious pacing.
    I give Troll and I
    a 5/10

I love playing as both characters. The graphics could be better and there are occasional bugs that may just need patching and this game would be an 8 for me. As it is I'll give it a 7 because there's really a lot here and I think it can appeal to a lot of different gamers for different reasons. For one, there is couch coop which makes playing with another player really fun. Also the combat is interesting as you can keep switching up your strategy weather you are the troll or the kid. I love the puzzles where you have to work as a pair. the story is also unique and I am enjoying it a lot so far. Full Review »
