Toukiden 2

Where the first Toukiden was very solidly in the Monster Hunter tradition, this one edges that much closer to a hybrid JRPG/ Monster Hunter experience, and I couldn’t be happier about that. This is exactly what I want from a “Monster Hunter clone.”

Toukiden 2 shows that an already impressive series can be made even better by taking chances on new systems. The story stays in scope of the premise throughout the game even after accepting multiple side-quests, theres always clear knowledge of what to do next. Although the open world map by intimidating to some, the game offers easy quick traveling options to seamlessly get players from one place to another. After playing the game for well over 30 hours, I feel like I can continue playing for another 100 and with that I happily say, “Bring it on!”

Toukiden 2 manages to get out from Monster Hunter's shadow, and finds its own style. A style that is a joy to play.

Toukiden 2 does so many things right not only when compared to its predecessor but also when compared to the sub-genre as a whole. The addition of new weapons is welcome, but the Demon Hand makes combat and traversal feel much faster than before, making up for the lack of a deep combo system. The open world makes the experience feel more epic, since you don't always have to rely on missions to get some action, a fact that's strengthened by the lessened reliance on the mission board mechanic. The story remains engaging, and although the presentation could be better, it is better than most other games on the platform. Toukiden 2 is certainly one of the better monster-hunting games, and fans of the genre would do well to check it out.

Monster Hunter fans should check this game out. It has a lot of depth to it while still being an accessible hunting game without all the preparation needed. It feels a bit more action-based, while still feeling familiar. At the same time, action RPG players will find a lot of fun here with Toukiden 2, and people always wanting to get into the Monster Hunter genre can find an easy time here. I highly suggest this game to action fans as well as fans of the RPG genre, and yes, I know how a lot of Monster Hunter purists are, but they should really try this one out as well. It may not be as deep in some aspects but it does have its merits. I can easily see myself playing this game for the next few months, and if you let it hook its demon hand into you, you will too.

Toukiden 2 is a sequel that raises a new air to the franchise and offers a touch of originality. Exploration and hunting come together to give a different option to hunting games.

As a third person monster hunter with JRPG elements, Toukiden 2 gets a lot right. It has some important limitations that you should consider before diving in, but if you enjoy the franchise or the monster-hunter genre, keeps this one in mind.

Toukiden 2 is packed with new concepts, battle mechanics, an open-world and an evolved application of previously existing elements that both fans and newcomers to the franchise will be spoiled with and enjoy.

A great successor to the original game and a decent addition to the “hunting” genre especially for those who look for something simpler than the Monster Hunter series.

In the end, Toukiden 2 comes as a nice surprise. It improves upon the decent original in many different ways that make sense, and most of these changes ensure that smashing boss after boss doesn’t feel anywhere near as repetitive as it did in the past. When I was done with the first Toukiden, I was completely burned out and desperate for a break. After finishing Toukiden 2? I’m raring for more.

Though the plot opens the door to some compelling storytelling only to trip while walking in, there are so many other reasons to give Toukiden 2 a spin. This is faster and more action packed when compared to other titles in the genre. It features a truly open world with load times only occurring when first starting up, fast traveling, story transition or game over. Even then, loads are short. The player can explore and quest for hours without ever needing to stop. When taking into account the massive amount of options packed into this title, they might not want to.

Toukiden 2 works very well as a sequel with the new open world that offer us a better approximation to the missions and the demon hand that gives us more options on its combat system. Although the game is not perfect, could be a good choice for the hunting action RPG lovers.

Another solid entry in the series and probably your best bet for a demon-hunting experience on current gen consoles.

Toukiden 2 is a cool game in the vein of Monster Hunter or Soul Sacrifice. What's important is that this game offers more than just hunting - an open world with side quests. Fighting and exploration coexist well, and the end result is a game worthy of your attention. But it could have been prettier.

Toukiden 2 keeps the solid fighting and RPG mechanics of the previous titles, and add a surprising and fun open world dimension.

Toukiden 2 does what a sequel should do: keeps what works, improves what doesn't and adds new features. Overall, it's a really good game you can enjoy alone or with friends.

While it may not go far enough to vastly improve on its previous entry, this series continues to offer plenty of appeal for someone like me who could not get into Monster Hunter due to how it skimps on the story. Bottom line, Toukiden 2 is a great option for those looking to get into this type of genre. It doesn't even feel as much of a chore this time to take down an Oni. And really, considering Monster Hunter hasn't been on consoles in a very long time (not counting the online-only game), it's certainly worth a look for that alone.

A good sequel of one of the best action adventure games in the vein of Monster Hunter franchise out there.

Toukiden 2 is both a solid hunting game and a vast open world, and even if it cannot match the ones from the AAA games seen recently (from Horizon to Breath of the Wild), it has more than enough juice to keep fan busy for at least a couple of weeks. If you liked the previous titles, you'll find much more of the same here and a couple of new twists that add to the gameplay.

Toukiden 2 improves the first episode in almost every way, and it's definitely the best representative of the monster-slashing genre on PlayStation 4. It's not too challenging, considering how lethal and precise the AI-controlled companions are, but the graphics are always smooth, and the gameplay is varied and deep enough to keep you entertained for a while.

Toukiden 2 is everything a sequel should be. Instead of lazily expanding on the original game, which would have been so easy to do, Omega Force actually went back to the drawing board, completely reinventing those parts that needed work. By streamlining much of the dull admin and encasing the game in a larger open world, Toukiden 2 manages to break free from the pack. As a result, it’s easily one of the subgenre’s best entries to date and one that, in some ways, is preferable to Monster Hunter.

Minor annoyances aside, Toukiden 2 has some truly addictive gameplay and tonnes of content to chew through. The game's dripping with atmosphere and looks great, with plenty of varied, large open world areas to explore. Meanwhile, the battle system is satisfyingly fast paced, and nothing quite compares to the power trip of ripping off the body parts of a giant demon.

Toukiden 2 is a huge step up from its predecessor, and is a smart evolution of the gameplay that Monster Hunter fans have come to know. By opting for a more story-focused experience, it manages to forego feeling like a grind, and the open-world aspect allows players to really take in their surroundings.

By speeding things up with the Demon Hand and turning genre conventions on their head by making the game open world, Toukiden 2 succeeds in so many areas where the original had failed. The dialogue is absolutely awful, but the story is another nice addition and sets the game apart from its contemporaries. Though I tend to think hunting RPGs are a much better fit for a handheld than a console, Toukiden 2 still impresses in ways the original game never foreshadowed. If you are a monster hunter at heart and want to try something a bit different, you could do a whole lot worse that Toukiden 2.

Sadly, combat tends to become a bit stale after a while in single player, as good equipment and skills allow players to just mash their way through the hordes of Oni infesting the land. Toukiden 2 is, without a doubt, a quality title and the best entry in the series, but with other recent games delivering better open world design and combat it may be difficult for some to be enthralled by the Omega Force developed game.

Toukiden 2 can get repetitive at times with battles that go on way too long but it's still a fun monster hunting game that fans of that genre should be able to enjoy.

The sequel to the rather disappointing Toukiden at its core is a motivating demon hunt with an entertaining story and an open world, that shows a few visuals deficits.

What seems at first glance like a fairly standard genre game, Toukiden 2 ultimately offers an interesting setting, imaginative creature designs, story- and exploration-driven gameplay, and unique combat elements. While its flaws are obvious, it’s not hard to forgive them when you’re in the heat of battle, chopping off a hellish spider-demon’s legs one by one and watching its life force disappear with every slash, shot, and punch.

Toukiden 2 is a packed title that sacrifices complex depth, but in exchange continues to offer people a faster, more easy to understand hunting game for anyone who does not gel with the methodical style of Monster Hunter, while also bringing a fun single player story. Omega Force switched up the formula with the inclusion of an open world, an idea that works well within its framework, but isn’t perfect – it could do to express the “open” aspect further, and also branch it out to the multiplayer component of the game. Fans should be happy to know that the sequel is a good follow up to the original, adding a little creative divergence, but upholding what was fun about the first title, while also allowing single or multiplayer gamers to jump in and enjoy without frustration.

Toukiden 2 manages to stay interesting by providing a wealth of abilities that can be used in exploration and fighting. However, it doesn't do a ton to break apart from its mostly one-note formula of traversing large open lands in order to find and take down oni.

Another enjoyable but greatly perfectible new entry in the Toukiden series. If you liked Kiwami, this is the “more of the same” you're waiting for.

Even though Toukiden 2 lacks depth in its combat, the game still manages to provide a story and world that players will enjoy spending time with.

Kind of addictive, due to a lot of content and an enjoyable multiplayer mode. The story, however, is weak and clichéd at best, and Toukiden 2's visuals are mediocre as well.

Toukiden 2 elevates the series with new gameplay features and an open-world setting that makes the game feel more cohesive and different to other titles in the genre. It manages to keep intact the best traits of its predecessors like an interesting lore, well-defined characters and a complex battle system, while also adding elements that improve the overall result. However, the lackluster graphics will reduce its mainstream appeal.

Toukiden 2 is packed with so much content that you can enjoy by yourself or with four other friends. The crafting is simple enough for anyone to get into and taking down a giant Oni can be incredibly satisfying. It’s just a shame that for everything good Toukiden 2 does, there is always something holding it back.

Adding a true open world to the Monster Hunter formula works just as well as you’d expect, even if this sequel is still a long way from perfecting the concept.

Toukiden 2 comes with plenty of missions, dozens of weapons and some nice bosses, but also an empty open world and modest graphics.

Toukiden 2 repeats the same formula from Kiwami in almost every aspect. Open world doesn't feel bad, although it isn't something you will remember for long. There's still a lack of dynamism in combat, that are almost identical to the earlier entries in the franchise, that will not surprise anyone when it comes to visuals. There is potential here, but the series needs to evolve if it wants to have international repercussion.

Toukiden 2 isn’t a bad game but there are enough flaws to stop it from being what could’ve been a great. I believe fans of the hunting style action RPG will easily get the most out of this, enjoying what they already love about the genre as they’re introduced to Toukiden 2's new ideas. If you’re not already a fan of this type of game however, it’s unlikely that this title will be the one to change your mind.

Not unlike the gray pebble on the bed of gaming’s great river, Toukiden 2 does nothing to harm or hinder the flow, but does nothing special to draw anyone in either. Action RPG first and prototype ice skating hack and slash second, Toukiden 2 is as worthy of a look as it is a pass.

Toukiden 2 is a game only suitable for fans of the franchise or lovers of Omega Force. Otherwise you'll have to make an effort to go through its basic cliché-driven narrative and gameplay.
