Toukiden 2 is a great leap towards a much-needed evolution, and it dares to add new things and challenge tradition. Hunting games usually get an enhanced edition that adds all kinds of stuff and I eagerly await what Omega Force will bring on next time around. In the mean time, I’m gonna play more of this game for a few dozen more hours.

Monster Hunter fans should check this game out. It has a lot of depth to it while still being an accessible hunting game without all the preparation needed. It feels a bit more action-based, while still feeling familiar. At the same time, action RPG players will find a lot of fun here with Toukiden 2, and people always wanting to get into the Monster Hunter genre can find an easy time here. I highly suggest this game to action fans as well as fans of the RPG genre, and yes, I know how a lot of Monster Hunter purists are, but they should really try this one out as well. It may not be as deep in some aspects but it does have its merits. I can easily see myself playing this game for the next few months, and if you let it hook its demon hand into you, you will too.

Minor annoyances aside, Toukiden 2 has some truly addictive gameplay and tonnes of content to chew through. The game's dripping with atmosphere and looks great, with plenty of varied, large open world areas to explore. Meanwhile, the battle system is satisfyingly fast paced, and nothing quite compares to the power trip of ripping off the body parts of a giant demon.

A great successor to the original game and a decent addition to the “hunting” genre especially for those who look for something simpler than the Monster Hunter series.

Toukiden 2 can get repetitive at times with battles that go on way too long but it's still a fun monster hunting game that fans of that genre should be able to enjoy.

Another enjoyable but greatly perfectible new entry in the Toukiden series. If you liked Kiwami, this is the “more of the same” you're waiting for.

Toukiden 2 could have been a fair game, if only it weren't so visually ugly and so absolutely not user friendly.

It's taken forever for one of these Monster Hunter type games to embrace an open world design. Definitely doesn't feel like Koei-Tecmo's usual Warriors gimmick where they slap a couple new characters in it, rework the story a tad and release a bare bones sequel. They actually mixed it up a great deal. The character models are a lot better, and the character customization is much deeper. The Demon's Hand and "soul dash" mechanics make traversing the world fun.

My only gripes for Omega Force would be to try to better match Monster Hunter's difficulty. That and substantially up the world's graphics, with recent titles like Hyrule Warriors and Dragon Quest Heroes we know they're capable. Omega Force needs to step into the next generation already instead of tending to frequently hang two generations behind everyone else graphically. It's most likely the Vita that's holding everyone back. The game is a blast though. Hopefully as they perfect the hunting game formula they can eventually prod Capcom into playing with the big dogs again where big monsters belong----on the big screen. The 3DS 800 x 240 res 4.88' screen just doesn't cut it for slaying life sized dragons and it's a shame. This title is really worth around a 7.5/10. I'm giving it a 10/10 because some moron gave it a 2.

For me the best alternative to Monster Hunter. It improved my main complaints of the prequel while also keeping the strengths of it. ToukidenFor me the best alternative to Monster Hunter. It improved my main complaints of the prequel while also keeping the strengths of it. Toukiden is set in an alternate universe Japan. Since ancient times a secret group called Slayers protects mankind from the threat of Oni. Oni are beings that life in another kind of space time and consume souls. They can enter our world with some kind of shenanigans (needs souls and they create a kind of body to use in our world if I understand it correctly) and if left uncontrolled warp our space time to something humans cant survive. In the past an event named “The Awakening” happen which was a massive onslaught of Oni. All Slayers could barely prevent mankind's destruction and are confined in the remaining parts of Japan not warped by the Oni. It is a constant struggle for survival. The main story is set 2 years after the events of Toukiden Kiwami. Your newly created hero is fighting in the beginning of what will later be known as “The Awakening” when he is mysteriously transferred forward in time. So begins an entertaining story. It focused on inner conflicts of a Village at the borders to the Oni territory, some political plots or schemes and characters backstories. Each character has his own story arc and carries his/her burden. Often they were not strong enough in the past or made mistakes that can not be corrected. It uses the Monster Hunter formula as you hunt different sized Oni (Medium size is new). You don't level up and your strength lies in your equipment and Mitamas. (Spirits of fallen Heroes, Monks, Spiritualist or Mythological beings of Japanese culture). These are also divided in multiple roles which adapt to different play styles (Defence for example gives you a small shield). These level up and learn new abilities or improvements (Active abilties must be equipped as you are limited). You created better equipment from loot that is obtained from Oni or found. There are multiple weapons with different play styles. Here whips and sword / shield styles are added. I used mostly the twin blades (very fast attack speed), Katana (Slower but stronger) and gloves (Slow but powerful). Other additions are now a complete overworld and the “Demon Hand” item that can be used for transport or attacking. Technically / visually the game looks great. The Oni look amazing especially the bigger ones (I would buy an artbook). The music is atmospheric. A complaint by many was that the prequel was to easy. Here you can increase the difficulty to your hearts content (also get better loot and with this better equipment). The content is easily enough for 50-100 hours or more. Overall this is an excellent alternative to Monster Hunter and was fully worth my time and money. Expand

Toukiden 2 is finally more than just a simple clone. It's more like a game standing on it's own with a bit of the MH formula in it.

Toukiden 2 is an open world hack-n-slash rpg-ish game with a nice story, a lot of sidequests and a beautiful world.

The combat system didn't change much and also the weapon classes are almost the same as before, but that dont really hurt the game and I personally liked/like it. Little changes here and there, like the demon claw and some new weapon classes are welcome additions but not really ground breaking.
The grafics are still dated, but far prior to the first entry or kiwami and from the design standpoint are really beautiful at times.
The open world seems relatively small at first but opens up into new areas and landscapes as you progress in the story. There is a lot to see and do here with little sidequests, hidden treasures or fights between oni and other slayers you can occasionally stumble upon. On the other Hand it never feels like its to much, or overwhelming like in in so many other open world games...

The game focuses even more on the story than toukiden 1 did and yes you have a lot to read because there are only english subs and no dub, but I had no trouble with it, even while fighting a boss enemy. And seriously, if it's to much for you to read a text for a minute, then go play cod...
What I don't understand is why there is no sub when you're out in the field and the people in your group doing their occasionally chatter. Yes it's no essential chatter but...why?
The story itself is nice, but nothing too special. If you liked the story of the first entry, you will like this one too.
Anyway, if you have enough of the story for the moment you can always go out and do some sidequests, online with friends, or alone, go on a hunt for items for better equipment, go into the ruins and battle your way down the floors or just explore the world. As mentioned before, there is a lot to do.

To sum things up, the game improves the Monster Hunter formula in the right places, but stays true to itself.
If you liked Toukiden 1 / Kiwami, you will love this one.
If you like Monster Hunter style games, you will like this one too.
If you love Monster Hunter style games but dont like the japanese setting, you should at least try this one because it does a lot of things better then MH and other games of this type/genre.

Great title with tons of replay value and lots of fun bosses that is pretty much essential if you enjoy hunting games. Gets zero stars thoughGreat title with tons of replay value and lots of fun bosses that is pretty much essential if you enjoy hunting games. Gets zero stars though because Tecmo-Koei are insufferable tools that insist on disabling external music and Spotify in every one of their releases. Every single moment that Toukiden 2 is running is considered a "blocked scene" just to make sure that players cannot listen to their own music. It's beyond trash ordinarily, but the fact that this a game in a genre which requires hundreds of hours of heavy grinding makes it unforgivable. If they ever update their game and fix this crap I will update my score. Until then, I've got nothing but a huge middle finger for Tecmo-Koei and every other dev that tries to pull this stupid BS. I will never understand why Sony even allows it in the first place. Expand
