The Division is a third person shooter action-MMO. The premise of the game is that someone has released an engineered supervirus in New York City. You are a member of The Division, a top-secret organization of sleeper agents who are activated to help bring order to the city.

And here we already run into our first issue – why? Why are we sleeper agents, and not just ordinary citizens who have decided to help? Because we’re super badasses and they wanted to justify that? How would random schmucks who spend most of their time doing other things all be super badasses?

    Whatever.

The point is, you are going into New York City and establishing order by killing rioters, looters, sanitation workers, criminals, and private military company folks who are all trying to take over the city. And yes, the sanitation workers thing is not a joke; they walk around with flamethrowers on their backs trying to clean things up.

Alas, despite this pretend-variety, in reality, most enemies fight pretty similarly – there’s some difference with the sanitation workers (the cleaners) because of their flamethrowers, but otherwise the factions are largely interchangeable, save for the fact that the PMC faction has medics.

The enemies are mostly pretty samey. There’s a handful of special enemy types, but they are basically ordinary enemies with some added ability, save for the snipers, who just attack you at long range. The only real exceptions are some “unique” enemies, who are anything but unique but which have more health and sometimes play a bit more differently, with a couple of big, heavy characters and one who carries around a shield to block your attacks with.

Sadly, this “variety” is pretty minimal compared to the gameplay length, and by the end of it, you will have fought all of these enemies to the point where it becomes rote.

The Division is a new kind of MMO – a primarily single-player experience wherein you will never encounter another player in most of the game area due to almost the entire world being an instanced area for the player alone. You can play with other people at will, but you can also play it as a single-player experience, and frankly, it works just fine as one and doesn’t feel like it gets much added to it from multiplayer. That being said, that’s not really a good or bad thing – it is about the same quality either way, and unfortunately, that quality is rather low.

The real problem is the sameiness. The game is ultimately just a cycle of you going out and killing enemies to get better loot. The dungeons are just a series of battles with enemies which are, frankly, mostly interchangeable with battles you get into wandering around the city streets, save that sometimes there are reinforcements which join the battles. The quests, too, basically follow the same mold, and ultimately the game consists of “defend a location while enemies attack you in waves” and “attack enemies who are defending a location”. Basically the whole game follows this, and there is very little variety – what little variety there is mostly a function of the particular environment, and even there, there are a number of copy-pasted environments, including a sewer fight that I think I had five separate times.

The story is pretty bland – in theory, it is a neat idea, but in practice, you just don’t have any link to any of the characters (being a mute protagonist) and they’re all fairly generic. None of them are terribly voice-acted or get terrible lines, they’re just bland and lack any real depth. As such, there’s no reason to care about their plight. The civilians are all interchangeable, and there’s just so little to grab onto anywhere in the game.

All in all, this is just not worth your time.

At best the game could be described as unambitious but to be honest I've simply found it downright boring. The cover based shooting is functional, but its not even close to being as good as something like Gears of War, and the RPG elements just turn everything into a grind (and don't get me started on the bullet sponge enemies). Add in an instantly forgettable storyline and 6 hours is about as much of The Division as I can take.

The very definition of mediocrity. Bland mechanics, shooting feels uninspired, missions are mind-numbingly repetitive. An unsuccessful mishmash of tactical shooting, RPG, and MMO; Ubi should have picked one and stuck with it. Wait for this game to drop in price, or borrow from a friend.

The endgame is really lacking and the only reliable way to get gear right now is crafting, which makes replaying missions useless. At the moment i can't say that i am looking forward to anything the game has to offer. I will probably be back for incursions, but i will do them once or twice and i will be done. Unless they have some interesting mechanics, which are otherwise lacking in the campaign and dark zone.
The dark zone is where the division is at its most worst in my opinion. Unless you want to craft things, there is 0 need for you to extract. I heard that the new patch increased the rogue percentage but it's just not enough for me since most of the time the items i get are too boring to extract, and that's what i usually get with 185 scavenging. I had only one yellow drop that wasn't even an upgrade to the vendor stuff. Not even in terms of armor or any other stat that isn't a talent.
The gameplay is solid but it is severly lacking. There's no variety to anything, since the actives are just that, only actives, and don't require much skill to deploy. The guns are somewhat different and they feel different, which is the only nice thing i can say about the gameplay.
If you are expecting interesting missions, well, all i can say is that the game is just horde mode. The last boss has some kind of a mechanic (if you pay attention to the dialogues) but can easily be ignored and shot through without any problem.
What is the most unfortunate thing for me is that i bought the season pass, but i already feel like this is the last game i'm going to play because it is nothing more then a deception and it is so boring it got me bored of gaming in general, and i'm not even salty when i'm saying this.
Although i cannot say that they failed anything, not even the dark zone is really that bad, it is just boring, which is different from complete failure, this game just doesn't seem to be engaging enough for me to keep playing it. The lack of dropped loot and the lack of boss mechanics really kill it for me.

Lost to factions and gangs, the government sends in Division Agents to reclaim the city. The Division is a third person shooter with a mix of RPG and MMO elements. Your character runs around the city completing missions, side quests and encounters to secure zones throughout the city. However this game is riddled with problems. Firstly, the story to the game is not presented well, the side missions are repetitive and provide nothing but your time The missions are too easy and the Dark Zone (the games PVP) is ridiculously boring and and filled with cheap tactics, glitches and cheats.

To excel in PVP you gear means everything. In a game where gear specs are completely random this can be quite frustrating as luck plays more of a factor than skill in being a unstoppable force in the Dark Zone. The shotgun NPC's are overpowered and over accurate, the gear drops are so randomized it is extremely frustrating as your search for the best in slot gear. A lot of the games abilities and talents are broken or glitched. The loading times are unbearable. With the exception of the Dark Zone area, you never once encounter another player running around the city unless in a party, making the city a very bleak underpopulated world.

This game has potential, but very problematic. The developers are new to this genre of games and vast issues the game faces shows it. On a positive note the graphics are very appealing. But we all know graphics aren't what make a game great.

Overall this is a mediocre game. Maybe The Division will improve in the future, but in the meantime it is a game to get if you literally have nothing better to do. For the trophy hunters, getting the platinum trophy is extremely easy, however there are grinding elements especially with the collection of collectibles throughout the game world. The PVP trophies are simple especially if you have a friend to kill trade.

The enemies are all the same and take an entire magazine to kill. The bosses are even worse and lack any interesting/memorable features. They're just boring bullet-sponges as many others have mentioned. Not that much weapon variety either, just the same guns with different stats. If you want to compare, it's like Destiny 2 without the diverse environments, enemy variety, weapon variety, and with inferior controls.

On the flip side, the feel of the guns is pretty good, and the city is fairly detailed. I can see how it could be fun if you did everything with friends. But for someone who's just trying this several years later after picking it up for $4.99, it's very hard to enjoy. I ended up returning it after 2 days.

I did not like this at all.

    - Enemy AI are bullet sponges
    - I feel that the city is empty and I'm always walking around
    - Story is pretty light
    - Not many enemy models
    - Aiming and recoil mechanics at times are undesirable
    - Very repetitive.. Just a soulless series of fetch quests.

Graphics and city detail are nice!

    Not worth $60

It's very simplistic and repetitive. Most missions are just you going from room to room to shoot bullet spongey enemies that do absurd amounts of damage to you, gauntlet after gauntlet after gauntlet. The 'boss' fights are hardly interesting. They're just dudes with bigger health bars, with the final boss just being one giant health bar while enemies spawn around you to insta-kill you as you're camped in a corner, just unloading magazine after magazine into it. The game is perhaps better to play with friends? But in the end, you're all just doing the same thing. Emptying bullets into a health bar that goes down a bit faster. That, and there's still plenty of bugs in this game, like enemies just teleport spawning in front of you suddenly. Some cover areas are bugged to where you can't walk around their corners/unable to climb over them/running into an invisible wall when all you want to do is just drop down five inches of its ledge. Wait awhile before you pick this game up. It needs far more interesting content and fixes before it can even dream of being worth sixty bucks. Expand

The Dark Zone is a love hate relationship but is over ran by a bunch of pubescent teens that like to camp and harass the **** out of you and camp your stuff so you may never get the items you've rightfully earned and drop lots of ranks. It's a shame that this game has so much appeal and the whole idea of a Dark Zone is sweet. But the fact that other players can hear your mic conversations and randomly join in on your party chat with friends to know what your gonna do and talk to back and fourth I really feel Ubigay screwed up on. What part of the game requires strategy but you cant do it because you have 2-3 other dip ****s listening in so they know your next move. I really had high hopes for this game and in one fell swoop it was ruined by a bunch of over geared lvl 13-14 players decked out in legendary gear at 14 to kill other players and all they do is sit together and act all nice then kill you when your trying to load the chopper.. This game is for you if you have no life or only see to it as to bully other players and ruin there experience of the game. Has Ubigay ever heard about Battle Grounds? I think not I think The Dark Zone should be a PVE with harder bosses and etc not a lets see if my team of bullies can kill a team of friends/casual players. So as I will say the missions are very bland The Dark Zone is blunt and needs a lot of improvements. Oh and so you know they whole aspect of RPG shooters turning into a mass pvp game where Level and gear matters is terrible. There is a huge reason why other mmo's have a balancing to there PVP. So I will play my game till its beat but I will get rid of it right after because the experience I've had in the Dark Zone was utter **** Better to stick to Destiny least they did they're research on how to execute a proper MMO.
I hope I don't prevent people from playing this could be gem but if you plan to play solo or with maybe 1 other friend then move on this game is NOT for you. Thank you for reading my review and I hope this helps out in any way.

I mean, to throw a grenade (in real time in a gun fight), you have to press the button, get the curser to where you want and press the same button again. After some time we are all quite capable of judging where it will land so let’s just press the button once. The smallest of ledges require a button to jump over. Yes the graphics and scale of the map are great but is this what gets people coming back to play a game again and again. No, it’s gameplay. Tons of people are still playing MW2, and it’s not for the graphics. Look at Rainbow 6 Siege multiplayer, I defy anyone to say that this is quality online gameplay, it’s dreadful. Developers are always seeking to improve things, and rightly so, it just seems that improvements are all about more, more controls, larger maps, more options, more guns (some of which are really the same in this game) etc. COD has not been improved in the slightest for the jumping, running along walls addition, this is just an add on for the sake of change. I played Division last night and when we had to kill the female boss, my friend just stayed way back and shot a few bullets at a time into her as she run back and forth along the balcony bit. Rather like playing MGS a decade ago. All this, of course, is just my opinion; however I think the sayings “bigger is not always better” and “less is sometimes more”, well applies to the modern online games we are seeing. Expand

There is this infection going on...that is the main cause of all bad things, that is, total anarchy sweeps through NY. You are there as part of a secret agency to correct that..that is the chaos that will overtakenthe city. Basically this means you shoot down gangs. Endlessly. There are some paperthin story aspects to it, but this is what you will be doing. Sounds boring? Well it doesn't have to be but it is. There is very little story bound to who you are wiping down. Or to the other agents. There is some, but it didn't interest me one bit.
To sum it up...the story didn't get me. At all.

Then there is this dreaded bullet sponginess. It should be excused because its the RPG element, but for me it just didn't work. Having more realism would have. Shooting people in the head over and over again without effect because they are more "leveled" just feels off. In another more fantasy lik setting it wouldn't.

The division feels very bland. Streets look the same, they look great, but its more of the same, and more.., enemy's do, hell even the bosses are just very much the same and can absorb an insane amount of bullets.

There is the darkzone where you get killed instantly ifnyou come alone and even with a group, its not as fun as "regular" multiplay games.

What's left is the looting. Thats sorta fun. But a shallow aspect for an entire game.

No the division is not for me.

First of All, This is a MMO RPG, this is nth different from other RPG.

Its just another game with consistence on looting, leveling up. another word BORING, it is a game for no brainier, update yourself with latest glitch then you're the top players in the serve. It is nth like back in Diablo 2. If any future game developer wanna do any MMORPG again, pls take a look on PSP - Monster

It got a way better looting system, farm, wider range of weapon of choice. They alimented the PvP element, but did a good fine job with cooperate

The only good thing is it is very popularized game at the moment

    Pro:
Very populated game for at least 2-3 months

Good Coop system (but not the actual play, Army of Two by EA is a way better 3rd Person shooter.)

a must for Any mmorpg players (Destiny, Diablo)

    Cons:
Only few missions, you could finish all of it on 1st night.

fooling graphic (we know the E3 demo)

    Too repetitive.

Little Variety of Enemies So Far

Worst PvP system I've ever seen (You will never get a fair fight in DZ)

Although there are many interesting elements, and the co-op / pvp in the deathzone can be really funny and "new" as a concept, the game is really - REALLY - repetitive, in a boring way.
The game has just 5 or 6 "types" of missions, repeated all over until you hit level 30, this means that after 2 hours you've already seen everything the game has to offer in terms of gameplay, because the

This is gonna become even worse when you think that every new addition to make the gameplay just a little more enjoyable is gonna be payed as a DLC.
If you wanna waste time with friends, this game could be a cool thing, otherwise just don't buy it.

Game mechanics and visuals are nice unfortunately the bugs and glitches have left the end game severely unbalanced which means at present there is little end game unless you enjoy glitching your way through content to keep up with others.

This game is incredible mediocre and did not live up to the hype or other people's expectations. After 30 hours into the game and finished all of the quests, there are just nothing left to do except farming in the boding and repetitive dark zone. It won't win converts to the genre and the plot is problematic, but The Division is a handsome open-world offering, spiked with treachery. [May 2016, p.81]

That's the essential nature, and essential problem, of The Division's underlying structure. It's asking you to hunt gear with no tangible reward in terms of what you can do, how you do it, or what you look like doing it. [May 2016, p.108]

It builds a strong foundation on the gameplay front, offering up rewarding combat and simple skills, but doesn’t follow that with anything substantial, being content to let the standard end game grind and excellent-yet-stressful PVP try to cover all the questions its writing leaves you with.
