Despite one truly frustrating level, I had a pretty good time with To Leave and enjoyed the incredible challenge that it presented. Unfortunately, I wasn't nearly as intrigued by its unusual and ambiguous storyline.

While it is not meant to be an educational game about mental illness, I felt that its approach to the subject was exceptionally well done.

While it offers enjoyable and challenging platforming with a delightful visual style, the overall experience is hampered by the frustration at having to repeatedly redo the same gruelling sections. [Issue#150, p.90]

To Leave is certainly a competent 2D platformer, but its brutal difficulty is sure to stop the majority of its players from even finishing the game. Fortunately, its story and visuals are keen to excite to the point where they may just about be worth your frustration.

As a hardcore gamer, I love To Leave's concept of escape. This is a game that is designed to truly transform the player with a deep story and a hard as hell flying mechanics. It's designed to be a challenge even for veteran players. Still, it manages to keep you engaged and once you get the hang of it, you'll really lose the sense of time.
Many can relate to Harm, and his attempts to escape from reality, but what's admirable is his resolution to do something about it. To Leave is an incredible story that will resonate with real-life player frustrations and tangible proof of how developers and artists can put their whole heart and soul into wonderful works of art for the medium.

What starts off as a somber art house experience quickly becomes one of the hardest, but fair, 2-D platformers i've played in a long time. Full Review »
