It felt like a new type of gameplay when it comes to Telltale games. It felt newer but held its cartoon comic look. Story wise, I think this episode was the perfect Segway for Clem’s story. It’s so great to see her bond with AJ in the same sense Lee did with her. Expand

Good episode to open the final season to. The first hour is slow paced character building, showing us how much Clementine has matured and how AJ behaves, while also introducing us to the new characters. The ending had a quite surprising twist. It's also nice that some choices from ALL the other seasons, yes, even season one, actually carry over into this episode.

The gameplay feels better than ever with a telltale game since you have full control of the camera now, being able to walk in any direction, rather than just in a "cone" area. Gameplay also feels more challenging than other seasons.

Only cons i'll give is that some of the prompts didn't show up during combat.

    Good opening episode, 8/10

TFS has a strong start, I'd say the best start of any Walking Dead Game episode (that includes the very first one). The character and world building are on point, while I don't find myself very attached to any characters in this episode besides Clementine and AJ, their backstories and personalities are all very compelling. The world is bleak, and it feels dangerous, the Telltale team has done a great job setting the scene up for some extremely compelling directions. Reminding you that your choices will shape who AJ becomes. The overall feeling is harrowing, which exactly is what the writers intend, and they do a dang good job at it. I feel excited about the future, to what AJ and Clementine will become Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be honest first episode is the best of any the walking dead episode, because of the intense basement moment and the unexpected ending.
This season had a better gameplay experience. Feels better than ever.

Even though it's just the first episode, it already settles some promising improvements in terms of gameplay and also delivers a plot quite interesting for now and already satisfying for a first chapter. As it's seems and it's headed to - and, God, I hope I'm right -, thankfully this season won't be the disaster that "A New Frontier" was, giving the whole comeback of that atmosphere of great character and plot building mixed with the feeling of both uncertainty and "unexpectation" that creeps behind us throughout a new episode/season. The potential for a huge payoff in the final episode is undeniable. Still, the choices in this first episode will rarely make you stop and think for long, and there’s too much downtime, until a thrilling final half-hour. It’s good, but more undead than determined survivor [Issue#154, p.90]

The Walking Dead: The Final Season is off to a terrific start. With the best graphics of a Telltale game to date, excellent characters who are all superbly performed and a central mechanic that sees the challenges of being a responsible parent come to the fore, this is the most excited and engaged I’ve been about The Walking Dead in years. Thanks to a clever character setup that sees Clementine and AJ’s relationship echo that of Lee and Clementine from the original series, a palpable sense of foreboding has already been established.

The first episode of the supposed final season of Telltale's The Walking Dead is a classic slow burn, with well-developed characters and a real shocker of an ending. Telltale experiments with giving the player a bit more input and though this is nice conceptually, it unfortunately also leads to a lot of trial-and-error. Don't let that stop you though; there's a lot of promise here.
