The Walking Dead The Final Season Episode 1: Done Running
    Off to a slow start
Done Running is the first episode of this scheduled to be 4 episode long final season of telltales walking dead, and will wrap up clementine’s story…
And it seems as though the telltale style is being completely revamped here…
Everything is over the shoulder more like a 3rd person action game, combat is no longer primarily quick time events... there is a very shallow but still existing combat mechanic, it doesn’t feel the smoothest, but it’s a nice and welcomed change… trophies are also different which is probably the biggest disappointment for me.. There are plenty of miss able and collectable trophies... which just don’t belong in video games with player choice... it ruins it...
but here we are... people cried long enough that that’s hwat they wanted.. And by people I mean trophy channels on YouTube mad that they couldn’t make videos off of telltales games...
This is a decent episode, about 2 and a half hours long, does a lot of setting up the story and the characters, it’s you and aj finding yourself with a group of kids at an abandoned school…
there is a lot of remember when that thing happened moments here and a lot of being introduced to this seasons cast of characters… sadly though not much excitement here.. Things really pick up in the final 10 minutes or so... but up to that point this episode is fairly slow and boring… I was falling asleep trying to get through to the end...
thankfully telltales team does a great job at writing, so I have my feelings for certain characters already so I guess this was necessary, however I feel like this would’ve made for a better episode 2.. I kind of want to be shook and hooked before I get to know a new cast… it would’ve been nice to just get a full am and clam episode first...
theres not much here to get excited for other than the new delivery… the game feeling dragged out could be because of its more 3rd person action adventure feel compared to the adventure game feel of the past..
I’m interested to see where things go
But as of now, nothing has me wondering or caring what happens next...
youre not left with a mystery cliff hanger...
its more of a well... that just happened… and im not really itching for more…
Of course ill play this season through as I love telltales the walking dead and I love clementine, I would’ve just hoped the final season would be nonstop craziness
again things get a little crazy at the end, and I hope the momentum stays going
I give Episode 1 Done Running
    a 6.5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: engine improvements resulting in a very nice art style full of detail while remaining consistent with previous entries. The new cast is excellent, characters feel distinct and have mostly realistic personalities without mirroring other survivor groups from previous entries.

Cons: trophies are overall more poorly designed. There are now missable collectables, with no chapter select to clean them up after a playthrough. Other missable trophies encourage erratic nonsensical behavior by the player. Examples of this are a trophy that requires you to set off every trap in the encampment, which would leave your camp entirely defenseless... Another trophy for tickling aj from behind after scolding him for biting someone because they snuck up behind him. Clem is forced into doing stupid things, like sneaking out to spy on an argument, then smashing a padlock with a brick making enormous noise (ya know, while sneaking). This also destroys another defense of the encampment.

Overall, it's two steps forward and one step back as we havent had this good of a cast of characters since season one. Though, i'm ready to be rid of aj at the soonest possible moment.

The final season starts off on a good but slow note. As is typical from every Telltale game, the first episode is slow and starts building and exploring the story we are about to experience. The engine is still outdated but I never had any crashes while playing. The voice acting is great as always and I cannot wait to see where the final season leads.

The potential for a huge payoff in the final episode is undeniable. Still, the choices in this first episode will rarely make you stop and think for long, and there’s too much downtime, until a thrilling final half-hour. It’s good, but more undead than determined survivor [Issue#154, p.90]

The Walking Dead: The Final Season is off to a terrific start. With the best graphics of a Telltale game to date, excellent characters who are all superbly performed and a central mechanic that sees the challenges of being a responsible parent come to the fore, this is the most excited and engaged I’ve been about The Walking Dead in years. Thanks to a clever character setup that sees Clementine and AJ’s relationship echo that of Lee and Clementine from the original series, a palpable sense of foreboding has already been established.

The first episode of the supposed final season of Telltale's The Walking Dead is a classic slow burn, with well-developed characters and a real shocker of an ending. Telltale experiments with giving the player a bit more input and though this is nice conceptually, it unfortunately also leads to a lot of trial-and-error. Don't let that stop you though; there's a lot of promise here.
