I've finally found another game with combat as satisfying as Soulsborne, Sekiro, and God of War (PS4). All in all, this is a game about visceral, calculated combat, upgrading, and learning what playstyle suits your tastes over time. I wish the proficiency system wasn't scrapped, it was a rewarding way to earn your prowess. All said though, I've already pumped 20 hours in and am happy to keep playing. For all it's flaws, it has character and experience that's undeniable and genuine, and I love it. Expand

    It's pretty great.
To reiterate what a lot of other people have said, it improves from the first Surge in almost every way.

    Pros
    >It's combat is amazing, satisfying and plays like a sci-fi Bloodborne on crack
    >It's not as grindy as other Souls-likes (You just have to target the specific body part an armor piece or weapon is to obtain it.)
    >Decent build variety (Implants and armor sets provide bonuses which you can combine together to fit your playstyle)
    >Multiple weapons types, all of which have their own unique moveset

    Flaws
    >Suffers from somewhat boring characters and quest lines aside from a few exceptions
    >Story is lacking in a lot of ways
    >Shoddy release with quite a few graphical bugs and some questline bugs (not a lot of gamebreaking ones though)

    In-Betweens
    >Character creator is somewhat basic but serviceable (it's basically impossible to make anyone cute if that's what you're into. Go play Code Vein if you want to make a waifu)
    >Level design is somewhat lacking and loses some of the atmosphere that the first game had in exchange for more streamlined and less confusing areas which are easier to navigate.

    Conclusion
If you want a souls-like with amazing gameplay then The Surge 2 should at the very least have your consideration. While its story, characters and shoddy textures can detract from the experience, the visceral and satisfying combat and smooth progression are still very enjoyable and can provide players with a very good experience.

TLDR: The game has amazing combat with a good progression to go alongside it. Marred by shoddy characters, story and some iffy textures

I'm giving it a nine because I am somewhat biased and I deeply enjoyed the game

Who cares that the developers prioritised great combat, character customisation and game-play over secondary - nice to haves- like the story (which is decent anyway). It's a video game. If you want a great story or narrative then read a book , man! I am playing TS2 on a PS4 Pro on performance setting and after 12 hours have encountered few major technical issues. If you enjoy Bloodbourne then this will be right up your street. Its great and the music and atmosphere makes me feel like I am in a John Carpenter film.

    In summary:
    >> Satisfying and innovative combat mechanics;
    >> Huge range of character customisation options;
    >> Interesting game world and intricately designed map
    >> No Loot box nonsense - Just a pure gamer's game like them good old days;
    >> Balanced grinding and looting.
    >> Innovative quality of life improvements to the Soulsbourne genre such as being able to bank your exp points (tech scrap)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is being reviewed with a ps4 pro in enhanced resolution/30 fps mode using a 4k hdr tv.

The Story to say compared to the first one starts slow off but builds up rather interesting, just like the The Surge 1 did. From a timeline perspective The Surge 2 plays shortly after the ending of The Surge 1 and it progresses from there on forward.

World Design: Simply said, it is amazing. Imagine a 2D metroidvenia just in a 3D World with multiple layers. The World/Areas you unlocked also change the further you progress in the Storyline.

Gameplay: Just as satisfying as the first one with even more weapons. At some point i got stuck with the build i was playing, but you can quickly change your build to beat a boss easier (Im looking at you Ezra).

Sound: Oh boy them sweet sci-fi sounds/ambient music in combination with 5.1 Surround sound system is incredibly. Also very fitting to like 95% of the world. (Only at 1 boss it didnt suit my taste but its fine tho)

Graphics: At 30 fps sometimes "glitchy" bcause of deck13´s engine to stabilize 30 fps, which didnt bother me too much as you get forget about it in a fight. In full hd mode no disturbances but it does not fit a 4k tv. If you have a full hd monitor/tv i would recommend the performance mode

I dont know what to say anymore. The Surge 2 improved the things i didnt like that much from the first series (mostly narrow halls/pathways) to an open world concept. The Surge 2 definatley deserves more praise. The devs really put some work into the game unlike some other companys.

Why, is it not better than the first? Warren should’ve been the main character but we will see it we get a Surge 3 and they give us back Warren.. no, also, because the main character customization wasn’t at all exciting and didn’t feel really gratifying of an experience.. code vein has much better character customization.. surge 2 limits cosmetics available to the player..

Overall, if you liked the first, you deserve to get the second.. maybe let it go on sale? I got mine for $40 this past Black Friday and it came with the DELUXE edition with art work and a mini comic and a cool case.. On the fence, don’t know if I will get the DLC.. probably not, but I did the theme park in the original Surge, so would be interested and may purchase theme park if they rotate it to the sequel. I have seen two or three ads FOR the theme park in my playthroughs and gotta say: I would eat it up if they recycled that DLC, with an original take on it but something similar with side quests and the sorts..

The Surge 2 is a solid game for Soulsborne lovers. It's not a game without flaws, and it's not a game for everybody, but if you know what you are looking for, it's a solid game. If you like Souldborne's gamplay, this may be for you.

First of all, I'll say that if you happened to play the first game and you liked it, you will like this one. This is just more of the same but with more polish and more new things, like build possibilities and weapon types.

The game feels obviously very much inspired by the Dark Souls franchises, but provides some different enough mechanics (like the dismemberment mechanic to upgrade you armors and weapons, the energy system or more) and a fleshed enough world, that it feels like it's own product and is able to stand by itself. That being said though, I repeat that this is a game very heavily inspired by the FromSoft games, if you don't like those, you will not like this one. Also, don't expect to play one run as a warrior, another one as a Wizard, and the following one as a priest like in Dark Souls. Here you don't have such options. They made a good game, but a much smaller one as it's understandable, so there are no such things here, you can only play melee (though the different weapon types feel more distinct than in the first one, there are new types and the different animations for each one is a nice detail)
Also, if what you like of the Souls games is the narrative, you won't find that here. In The Surge2, the main focus has to be the gameplay.

The game isn't made by a TripleA studio, so don't expect the scale other games have. Don't expect a million maps and a million tracks. Instead, this is a more compact piece in which they seem to have focused on making a small but solid all around game (again, very similar to the first one). There are a few bugs here and there, but they're not particularly common, and the few I encountered were not much more than slightly annoying and they fixed themselves by the time I left the surroundings. As I said before, the game is very well polished.

The Story is not the best you will see, but once again, it's pretty much ok. It's simple, but it makes sense with the world the game has created.

Another point I want to highlight are the maps. They are, in general very fun to play in. It's obvious a fair amount of time has been put in making them

As for cons, aside from the things I already mentioned, I'll say that, while the maps themselves are fun, the world as an overall feels weird, specially considering how the maps interconnect. Things such as having to go through the "posh bar" in order to go to the next area feel really weird.
Also, the personalizion is very limited. Granted, it's not the main focus of the game and you'll rarely see your face, but it's still true.

In terms of builds, there is some variety (not too much), but there are obviously some better than others and some aspects are really exploitable, making the game probably easier than expected. Nothing horrible though, and you're still free to not use them

As I said. Not a perfect game, but a pretty enjoyable one

Surge 2 was the last game I felt any enthusiasm to complete. The overall experience was fun. I've played a few games recently (Until Dawn, Bloodstained) but I either completely abandoned them or I finished them out of boredom. But Surge 2 was fun. It's a game in the Soulslike genre and shares some of this genre's characteristics. It's difficult, has few but hard bosses, doesn't have save/autosave and you are basically vulnerable from one safe point to another. I had to play the game more than once since I didn't get to play the DLC at the right time and locked myself out of it. So I had to play New Game+ in order to play the DLC. The game has a few flaws and I hope they address this in the next Surge games. 1) the areas kinda get boring. I think this is because the developing team isn't very big so expecting them to create a world as big and beautiful as Elden Ring is too much. 2) I personally have a problem with the core mechanic of getting schematics by curring enemy limbs. So I have to keep respawning enemies and cutting all their limbs in order to get all the blueprints. And the repetition gets really boring. 3) There should be more boss variety. It's not fun fighting variations of the same bosses over and over again or having one of the enemies you've fought over and over now pose as a boss with little changes to the movesets(looking at you Harold).
I've played the first Surge as well but the game was so boring and the areas were so convoluted and bland that I abandoned it at the final level. Surge 2 addresses many of the first one's problems.
    So overall
It's a short, compact soulslike set in a futuristic world. I recommend it to everyone when it's on sale

Good level design with a lot of verticality and even some changes and evolvement over the course of the game. A unique lock-on system that lets you choose between more damage or better loot. A solid leveling and upgrade system and a huge variety of weapons.

The weapon scaling was removed so you can experiment a lot more. The bosses are a bit better overall. The healing system saw a huge improvement. And the game doesnt start as slow as the first one.

Sadly the devs did nothing to improve the technical shortcomings of The Surge 1. The game looks better in some areas but worse in others so its roughly the same. And yeah of course there are some bugs and crashes and massive jank sometimes. Making a game with good tech seems impossible for German developers.

I played the game on PS5 from the start and it has stable 1440p 60fps here but I can only imagine how bad this game must run on a PS4. Dont play this game on PS4, the first one was terrible there and this seems as bad or even worse.

Overall a solid sequel. I you like Souls games and dont mind your character clipping through the ground sometimes when doing a finishing move you should play the first game and then this. 8/10

The combat is mouthwateringly delicious, but yes you need some time to get used to it, and once it clicks, it's hard to put down. The directional parry, which is a much more sophisticated mechanic than the conventional parry in Souls games, is addictive. Trying to master the directional parry in the middle of a chaotic battle with enemies surrounding you all over, especially for a guy like me who has mediocre gaming skills and reflexes, was extremely satisfying.

In addition, targeting limbs and dismembering them so you can use them as armor is a dream come true for me. And those slow motion finishing moves are simply incredible. In general, the developers managed to create more diverse looking environments and a much more fluid combat compared to the first game. If you invest enough time and get to like the game, you'll be rewarded with heart-pounding combat against mobs and bosses, which is a fact haters can't take away.

IMHO a few things could've been better: A bigger world for instance. The game feels a tiny bit small and short, but if you're getting it on Game Pass or PS Now etc, then this is not a real issue. Secondly, there could've been more boss fights because I felt like I needed more challenging boss fights. And finally, the story could've been less cliche, but who plays Soulsborne games for story anyway?

Shortly, I can't wait for the third installment of The Surge series.

All in all, The Surge 2 is a great game to pick up if you're looking for a more arcade-like take on the Dark Souls formula. It's a fun and engaging game with a solid combat system and enjoyable mechanics, and it's only dragged down by a mediocre story and lackluster environments. With the excellent improvements from The Surge to The Surge 2, the franchise is well on its way to standing tall in the Soulsborne genre. It's well worth playing if you're an aficionado of this genre and don't mind dying a few times.
