There is no map so you keep running around as there are so many shortcuts so it is easy to miss some paths to go further, then you die so you need to start again. There are lots of doors and teleports that you cannot access at the beginning of the game, some guides say "write down where there are because you want to get back to them once you have to tools to open them", terrible, especially without proper map.

There is a stronger person just at the beginning of the game that will keep you killing over and over as the game doesn't really tell you how to kill him.

Very frustrating experience, I wanted to spend some time playing this game, i hate not finishing games, but after 5 hours i had enough and deleted the game. Haven't even seen proper boss (Little someone? is his name) that must be hell can imagine that even now.

Barely playable souls like. Gear upgrades require an awful lock on system that doesn't work. Most enemies are far stronger than your guy, and ignore stagger and stamina at their leasuire. Just cranking damage numbers up isn't the way to make a game hard. The heal system is terrible; you start with no heals by default.

    Story is obtrusive and boring.

I got just over 3 hours into The Surge 2 when I thought "You know what? I've had enough of this nonsense". It's not that I can't handle playing difficult games, it's simply a case that I can't be bothered wasting my time playing a game that's difficult for the sake of being difficult. When I play videogames, I play them for fun - not because I feel the need to prove something, to myself or to others. I'm not averse to playing videogames that test my skills and reactions, but I draw the line when they overstep the bounds of what is reasonable and accessible.

The Surge 2 is undoubtedly a better game than the original. In my limited time with it, I noticed the improvements Deck 13 had made. The combat is smoother, the environmental variety of Jericho City is superior to the drab locales of the CREO factory featured in the original game, and every time you level up your Rig, you get skill points to spend on improving your Health, Stamina and Energy.

While I've just noted the positives, I can't say that I'd classify The Surge 2 as 'fun'. The damage scaling in the game is just ridiculously bad - most common enemies will hand you your hide in seconds. This seriously hurt my progression through the game because I was simply tired of constantly being on edge every time I went into combat against the numerous denizens of Jericho City. On top of that, most enemies have an ace up their sleeve that will seriously undermine you in some way - this is more an unfair tactic than it is a 'challenge' to overcome.

Story-wise, The Surge 2 is simply more sci-fi stuff mixed with weird, messed up Dark Souls type nonsense that we've all come to expect from the genre over the years.

In summation, The Surge 2 is an improvement over it's predecessor in some ways, but in many ways it features more of the same problems that deeply affected my time with the first game. In the 3 hours that I spent with The Surge 2, I couldn't help thinking of all the other better, more fun games in my personal games library that I could be playing instead of yet another gruellingly difficult Souls-like game that is deliberately designed to annoy me, frustrate me, and make me want to rage-quit.

I think there needs to be a discussion about game design philosophy and about game developers competing in a particular genre - that making a game harder or more difficult doesn't necessarily make it 'better' than other games. I honestly hope that game developers reach this realisation sooner than later, so they can avoid saturating the industry with games that only a small, select group of people will gravitate towards.

Because at the end of the day, games are created purely for escapism - from stress and the vast multitude of life's problems.

There is not much change in comparison to the first game and with half a year after release one could expect to have some major bugs fixed (maybe im just unlucky) anyway its my experience. The camera in combination with the aiming for bodyparts is sometimes a pain, especially near walls the camera like to flip around making it impossible to dodge or react properly. I played the first game which had some major flaws and not too much playing time but i wasnt craving a second part that soon (i dont know anybody who was either) so another year of developing with bugfixing and stuff wouldve been appreciated.
Besides, the new graffitifeature and the revenge enemies are coming really close to plagiate dark souls.
Actually its hard to hate the game since it looks sharp and the story is ok and some major flaws from surge 1 have been removed but to me this game couldve waited another year. I cannot bring myself to give more than 6 since some really really poor minded people here give 10 points even though the game is far from perfect

All in all, this is a game about visceral, calculated combat, upgrading, and learning what playstyle suits your tastes over time. I wish the proficiency system wasn't scrapped, it was a rewarding way to earn your prowess. All said though, I've already pumped 20 hours in and am happy to keep playing. It's pretty great.
To reiterate what a lot of other people have said, it improves from the first Surge in almost every way.

    Pros
    >It's combat is amazing, satisfying and plays like a sci-fi Bloodborne on crack
    >It's not as grindy as other Souls-likes (You just have to target the specific body part an armor piece or weapon is to obtain it.)
    >Decent build variety (Implants and armor sets provide bonuses which you can combine together to fit your playstyle)
    >Multiple weapons types, all of which have their own unique moveset

    Flaws
    >Suffers from somewhat boring characters and quest lines aside from a few exceptions
    >Story is lacking in a lot of ways
    >Shoddy release with quite a few graphical bugs and some questline bugs (not a lot of gamebreaking ones though)

    In-Betweens
    >Character creator is somewhat basic but serviceable (it's basically impossible to make anyone cute if that's what you're into. Go play Code Vein if you want to make a waifu)
    >Level design is somewhat lacking and loses some of the atmosphere that the first game had in exchange for more streamlined and less confusing areas which are easier to navigate.

    Conclusion
If you want a souls-like with amazing gameplay then The Surge 2 should at the very least have your consideration. While its story, characters and shoddy textures can detract from the experience, the visceral and satisfying combat and smooth progression are still very enjoyable and can provide players with a very good experience.

TLDR: The game has amazing combat with a good progression to go alongside it. Marred by shoddy characters, story and some iffy textures

I'm giving it a nine because I am somewhat biased and I deeply enjoyed the game

So I got myself this game right away, because I was looking forward to the improvements that I expected from them.

The game suffers from exactly the same issues as the first game.
They have improved only minor things, such as there now being a character editor and adding some pointless moves for weapons, that you will never use, because there is a single best move for everything.
The game itself is just really not good at all.

    The same bad lighting.
The same poor level design. By that I don't complain about the looping, just the overall layout, playability and believability of the levels is extremely poor.
The same way too easy combat. It's still possible to just jumpattack everything to death. No skill involved whatsoever. Also I can stack my stats way too easy.
The same pointless limb targetting, that is more of a chore than a fun addition. I swear this system is just a poor excuse to make the player grind and artificially stretch this game with 10 hours of actual content to 20 hours. It sounds good on paper, but in reality it's just annoying.

This time they also managed to poorly optimize the game. While the first one worked flawlessly for me, this one has some unexplainable stutters all the time, really making an average experience feeling even worse.

Also, again, the game is super short and they are asking the same price as for other 100h+ games. That is just not acceptable. Why can't the devs set a price that actually reflects the value of their product?

I don't even want to bother giving this thing detailed points, so in short:

The game itself is maybe a 6, but with the technical issues and the poor price-performance it's a 4 at best.

Though that is just objectively speaking, since I personally derived no fun from the game, because it was just way too easy to cheese things, even if I didn't try to, while most of the moves in the game are utterly pointless to perform. So for me the whole things was a big fat 0. The 4 is basically for people that don't play too seriously.

i remember the irina questline very fondly, up to the point that makes me wanna say it was engaging in a way i rarely experienced before. i really cared for the characters in general. scrap lady, maddy...all of them.
in ts2 npc´s are questgivers at best, the less you talk to them the better, it makes me wonder if the devs didn´t appreciate this quality of the first game at all, or the person responsible simply left the team and someones nephew with no writing skill chimed in. the sparky followers? b. please.
design also went into a direction, i simply cant understand. in ts1 everything was dark and depressing, while that colourful neon city in ts2, with its perfect weather, rather invites sunbathing, than doing what needs be done...chopping up maniacs.
    it is a fricking disgrace.
that all being said, combat looks amazing, but is that enough?

The Surge 2 is better than first part in many ways. They took the feedback the players gave them after the first game and tryed to do to everything they could to improve. Did it work? More or less.

    Combat:
The combat is way better than in the first game. It is faster, more fluid and now has a unique new element called "directional blocking". It´s overall not as hard as other souls like games but that´s something it doesn´t have to be. It gives you a full box of tools that you can use however you want.
It rewards risks that you might take but it can also be played very defensive.

    Level design:
The structure of the levels is damn near perfect. You remember the Bonfire in Dark Souls 1 after the prison where multiple paths connected back to that area? It´s better than that. The paths connect back in clever ways and are done really well. Sadly there is something missing. The game is supposed to play several months ofter the whole city has been locked down and anarchy now controlls the streets but somehow I just don´t believe it.

Let me give you and example of what I mean. In the Resident Evil 2 remake right after you entered the police station every prop you see in the location, tells you something. It tells you what happened, how people might have managed to hold up for a while and you saw things get used in the same way you, the player, would use it in this situation. empty crates become tables, corpes are piled up outside and so on. It dos not feel as handrafted and filled with details and storys as other games.

The save zones where the survivors gathered feel just, stupid. Like they ran out of ideas on what to do in there. None of the people behave like they even give a **** about what is going to kill them all. At some point the events even hit those zones and they still could not give lesse of a **** In the Fromsoftware titles you at least felt that things had an impact on other characters.

    Story:
The story is...okay. It has a lot of great ideas like the cult, the drugs the mercs and so on but here it has the some problem that I stated above. They did not do enough with it. At no point in the game you feel like the drugs are really a problem to anybody. They just exist as an idea. The cult is never shown as a threat to others. You of course see some dead bodys here and there but not interaction where they are really trying to take over the streets. Things are just...there. Citizen just stand around doing...nothing. Forever or just dance on the same spot without any music from anywhere, forever.

The thing that is missing in the environments and how the story is written is...reflection. (Or budget)
Other titles which are very well known for their story telling trough the envirnoment constatly ask: "Why would this be here? Where does this enemy come from? What happened to this guy? Why is this group standing around here? How would I act in this situation and use the tools in this world?" Here there was either not the skill or the money to do so.

    Sound and Music:
Here is truly a fresh wind of soundtracks. You got bored of the doomsday church chorus that you heard in other souls-like games before? Get ready for action. Everything sounds great and fits perfectly. Well done.

Graphics: The visuals are pretty similar to the first game. It´s not ground breaking but that´s to be expected from a game like this with a very limited budget. Sadly at the time of this review there are some loading issues with the textures which results and some blurry slow loading surfaces. The issue is known and the team is working on it.

All in all I can say that enjoyed my time in this game. It´s not what it could have been but still much more than what the first game was. It´s from a german developer and thos of you who know the budget situation of german games know why it´s so hard to produce here. I am sure the devs did everything they could with what they had.

For me it barely scratches the 7,5/10points on the scrore so it misses the 8 out of 10. I do recommend it for those who need their next souls-like fix and it´s definetly better than Code Vein so if you have to chose between these two, go for the Surge.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is being reviewed with a ps4 pro in enhanced resolution/30 fps mode using a 4k hdr tv.

The Story to say compared to the first one starts slow off but builds up rather interesting, just like the The Surge 1 did. From a timeline perspective The Surge 2 plays shortly after the ending of The Surge 1 and it progresses from there on forward.

World Design: Simply said, it is amazing. Imagine a 2D metroidvenia just in a 3D World with multiple layers. The World/Areas you unlocked also change the further you progress in the Storyline.

Gameplay: Just as satisfying as the first one with even more weapons. At some point i got stuck with the build i was playing, but you can quickly change your build to beat a boss easier (Im looking at you Ezra).

Sound: Oh boy them sweet sci-fi sounds/ambient music in combination with 5.1 Surround sound system is incredibly. Also very fitting to like 95% of the world. (Only at 1 boss it didnt suit my taste but its fine tho)

Graphics: At 30 fps sometimes "glitchy" bcause of deck13´s engine to stabilize 30 fps, which didnt bother me too much as you get forget about it in a fight. In full hd mode no disturbances but it does not fit a 4k tv. If you have a full hd monitor/tv i would recommend the performance mode

I dont know what to say anymore. The Surge 2 improved the things i didnt like that much from the first series (mostly narrow halls/pathways) to an open world concept. The Surge 2 definatley deserves more praise. The devs really put some work into the game unlike some other companys.

Why, is it not better than the first? Warren should’ve been the main character but we will see it we get a Surge 3 and they give us back Warren.. no, also, because the main character customization wasn’t at all exciting and didn’t feel really gratifying of an experience.. code vein has much better character customization.. surge 2 limits cosmetics available to the player..

I got mine for $40 this past Black Friday and it came with the DELUXE edition with art work and a mini comic and a cool case.. On the fence, don’t know if I will get the DLC.. probably not, but I did the theme park in the original Surge, so would be interested and may purchase theme park if they rotate it to the sequel. I have seen two or three ads FOR the theme park in my playthroughs and gotta say: I would eat it up if they recycled that DLC, with an original take on it but something similar with side quests and the sorts..

This is not bad game in general. But if you compare it to Dark Souls or Bloodborne... it is not that great. As a begining we have around 10 boss fight in the game. If we exclude regular humans, who are just stronger with more health and stronger atacks we have 1 boss which is repeated 4 times (their is even achievement, that we killed him 3 times) and one of humans which we fight 3 times. This is not bad game in general. Than 2 of this bosses are just regular robots, which we met during the game, but with more HP and more damage. That is so repetitive and annoying, to see same bosses again and again. Combat is more or less fine, but parring is so annoying. I never was good in parry in games... and for sure I passed whole game without using this. But in surge 2, parry was moved on another level of annoyance for me. If you dont like it, just ignore it. What for me was really terrible is that actually it was never clear, where should we go. While in DS you have more or less some idea where to go and you just go forward and forward, in this game... you don't know do you need to go to park or to port or somewhere else. As well because, there aren't any adequate fast travel, there are a lot of shortcuts. While somehow that was pretty nice in Surge 1, in Surge 2 locations are like labyrinth for me. In port nixon I never can't remember where the hell I should go. And because there isn't fast travel, when you go back to some area it is a bit terrible. Quests... they was never strong side of DS like games... this is not changing here. It is a bit more clear what quest we have, which actually is good, but anyway they are mostly boring and not interesting to do. Reward is pointless in general. Game is significant shorter than From Software games for sure. Upgrade system is pretty messy most of the time. If you don't go to grind your upgrade parts and don't search somewhere what kind of armor you can have and where to get it, you would play half of the game naked on level 1, without finding any component. On other hand around level 7 you may found few great location, where you can grind components as much as you want. For level 8 was similar, but for level 9 wasn't clear where exactly I should farm components and level 10 In my opinion was not accessible at all. Last level before final boss was filled with level 7,8 mobs, very little 9 and few 10, which drop no parts in my opinion. For me this system is pretty messy and complicated somehow. If you dont pay attention in it, you will just be without armor and better weapon. While most people I think don't want to grind their upgrade materials. This is not what is interesting in souls like games. In Surge 1 it was less complicated I think. Somehow npc levels rise with levels and your level in general. I never feel forced to go to previous area to farm upgrades, because I was too low level. For example in DS, you just found better sets and from items which you find around levels, you can at least build 1 weapon and have 1 armor set which suit you. Yes, in DS you as well could farm upgrade materials, but this was so optional. 1 thing which for me was improvement, that when you die and you need to recover your scrap, timer is increasing with 20 second for every enemy on your path. As well it heals you to max once you pick them. This is for sure important if you die on boss fight. As well something which is better than DS: in surge it is much more clear what is the story and what is happening.
In conclusion: somehow surge 2 feels for me a bit worst than Surge 1. Surge 1 was my first souls like game, and after it I have passed through DS1,2,3 and Bloodborne and maybe I have bigger expectation... but anyway Surge 2 for me is somehow lacking what is making souls like games that good and interesting. But it is not bad game, you could spend few hours. Maybe take it on sales.

Jericho City is meant some futuristic city but feels like you’re running around some 3rd grade stage design, it has no atmosphere and it’s hard to believe that anyone has ever lived there, it’s just so poorly designed. The combat has no fluency to it, is clunky and feels heavy. The whole game is just terrible, for what was touted as being a major improvement on the first game, it’s a major let down, even the camera angles in boss fights are still the real enemy. Once again we see the fake lazy greedy freeloading YouTubers etc, giving the game good reviews, just more proof how they will rate anything good for a few freebies as usual. The whole game is a total mess. Expand

Game disappoints especially hard if you've played The Surge before; the second game of this installment is not even remotely good. All the good points about it come straight out of the first game, most of the new features introduced are poor implemented mess or just lame attempt to appeal to the wider public with some generic mechanics.

All the good points about it come straight out of the first game, most of the new features introduced are poor implemented mess or just lame attempt to appeal to the wider public with some generic mechanics.

However I would forgive the game for all this - tons of NPCs, "regular" quests, a "city hub" with vendors and quest givers, everything that wasn't present previously and made it "chamber". After all we still have amazing animations and fast but strategic combat system, and it is gameplay that matters.

Nope, this aspect of the game that I had my hopes on went to drain with the new "cinematic" camera that cannot be turned off at all. Expect variable camera angles, variable camera distance, and the lightning that makes most of the screen extremely dark or blazing light (either way you can't see lots of it).

Camera in this game has a journey separate from yours. It changes slowly depending on yours and your targets position; there are times when it points at the wall behind you and your foe (!!!) just because it thinks it is a good time to rotate graciously to give you some good cinema-style angle far above and from the side. Obviously it is not good to stop seeing anything in a fast paced action game even for half second because that's what get you killed.

Camera probably is the only thing that has fun and creativity in this game: from displaying a wall behind you full screen to going Onimusha Warlords style 20 meters above you so you can never tell the distance to your foes, it never stops to amuse and enrage you. Old "Resident Evil" games probably had camera with less deviations that the Surge 2.

Oh, and don't let tooltips for buttons confuse you to think that you don't have to hold them to get some response with the removal of "progress circles" - they still do require this, but you don't know how long you have to press it now and boy oh boy expect to fail a lot of inputs because of it. If you pressed the button longer than it needs to be to get action 1 but not long enough to get action 2 you will get _absolutely no response_. None. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

There are ofc fancy circled menus if you hold your "old" switch stuff buttons just so you can mess up every single action, not just to use items but to select them.

Oh and visuals are harshly worse because of extremely bad and slow mipmapping realization, after exiting any menu you can enjoy super low res textures for several seconds at least. Even with PS4 pro.

Overall this is a poorly implemented and poorly designed game, especially in comparison to The Surge 1, that had it better in every regard possible.

First of all, I'll say that if you happened to play the first game and you liked it, you will like this one. This is just more of the same but with more polish and more new things, like build possibilities and weapon types.

The game feels obviously very much inspired by the Dark Souls franchises, but provides some different enough mechanics (like the dismemberment mechanic to upgrade you armors and weapons, the energy system or more) and a fleshed enough world, that it feels like it's own product and is able to stand by itself. That being said though, I repeat that this is a game very heavily inspired by the FromSoft games, if you don't like those, you will not like this one. Also, don't expect to play one run as a warrior, another one as a Wizard, and the following one as a priest like in Dark Souls. Here you don't have such options. They made a good game, but a much smaller one as it's understandable, so there are no such things here, you can only play melee (though the different weapon types feel more distinct than in the first one, there are new types and the different animations for each one is a nice detail)
Also, if what you like of the Souls games is the narrative, you won't find that here. In The Surge2, the main focus has to be the gameplay.

The game isn't made by a TripleA studio, so don't expect the scale other games have. Don't expect a million maps and a million tracks. Instead, this is a more compact piece in which they seem to have focused on making a small but solid all around game (again, very similar to the first one). There are a few bugs here and there, but they're not particularly common, and the few I encountered were not much more than slightly annoying and they fixed themselves by the time I left the surroundings. As I said before, the game is very well polished.

The Story is not the best you will see, but once again, it's pretty much ok. It's simple, but it makes sense with the world the game has created.

Another point I want to highlight are the maps. They are, in general very fun to play in. It's obvious a fair amount of time has been put in making them

As for cons, aside from the things I already mentioned, I'll say that, while the maps themselves are fun, the world as an overall feels weird, specially considering how the maps interconnect. Things such as having to go through the "posh bar" in order to go to the next area feel really weird.
Also, the personalizion is very limited. Granted, it's not the main focus of the game and you'll rarely see your face, but it's still true.

In terms of builds, there is some variety (not too much), but there are obviously some better than others and some aspects are really exploitable, making the game probably easier than expected. Nothing horrible though, and you're still free to not use them

As I said. Not a perfect game, but a pretty enjoyable one

"Story/easy mode" would make this game 8 out of 10, but as developers decided to punish gamers for every "wrong" button press, it barely makes 1 of 10.

I've played a few games recently (Until Dawn, Bloodstained) but I either completely abandoned them or I finished them out of boredom. But Surge 2 was fun. It's a game in the Soulslike genre and shares some of this genre's characteristics. It's difficult, has few but hard bosses, doesn't have save/autosave and you are basically vulnerable from one safe point to another. I had to play the game more than once since I didn't get to play the DLC at the right time and locked myself out of it. So I had to play New Game+ in order to play the DLC. The game has a few flaws and I hope they address this in the next Surge games. 1) the areas kinda get boring. I think this is because the developing team isn't very big so expecting them to create a world as big and beautiful as Elden Ring is too much. 2) I personally have a problem with the core mechanic of getting schematics by curring enemy limbs. So I have to keep respawning enemies and cutting all their limbs in order to get all the blueprints. And the repetition gets really boring. 3) There should be more boss variety. It's not fun fighting variations of the same bosses over and over again or having one of the enemies you've fought over and over now pose as a boss with little changes to the movesets(looking at you Harold).
I've played the first Surge as well but the game was so boring and the areas were so convoluted and bland that I abandoned it at the final level. Surge 2 addresses many of the first one's problems.
    So overall
It's a short, compact soulslike set in a futuristic world. I recommend it to everyone when it's on sale

Good level design with a lot of verticality and even some changes and evolvement over the course of the game. A unique lock-on system that lets you choose between more damage or better loot. A solid leveling and upgrade system and a huge variety of weapons.

The weapon scaling was removed so you can experiment a lot more. The bosses are a bit better overall. The healing system saw a huge improvement. And the game doesnt start as slow as the first one.

Sadly the devs did nothing to improve the technical shortcomings of The Surge 1. The game looks better in some areas but worse in others so its roughly the same. And yeah of course there are some bugs and crashes and massive jank sometimes. Making a game with good tech seems impossible for German developers.

I played the game on PS5 from the start and it has stable 1440p 60fps here but I can only imagine how bad this game must run on a PS4. Dont play this game on PS4, the first one was terrible there and this seems as bad or even worse.

Overall a solid sequel. I you like Souls games and dont mind your character clipping through the ground sometimes when doing a finishing move you should play the first game and then this. 8/10

It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it doesn't deserve the 0s and 2s that it's been getting here. The combat is mouthwateringly delicious, but yes you need some time to get used to it, and once it clicks, it's hard to put down. The directional parry, which is a much more sophisticated mechanic than the conventional parry in Souls games, is addictive. Trying to master the directional parry in the middle of a chaotic battle with enemies surrounding you all over, especially for a guy like me who has mediocre gaming skills and reflexes, was extremely satisfying.

In addition, targeting limbs and dismembering them so you can use them as armor is a dream come true for me. And those slow motion finishing moves are simply incredible. In general, the developers managed to create more diverse looking environments and a much more fluid combat compared to the first game. If you invest enough time and get to like the game, you'll be rewarded with heart-pounding combat against mobs and bosses, which is a fact haters can't take away.

IMHO a few things could've been better: A bigger world for instance. The game feels a tiny bit small and short, but if you're getting it on Game Pass or PS Now etc, then this is not a real issue. Secondly, there could've been more boss fights because I felt like I needed more challenging boss fights. And finally, the story could've been less cliche, but who plays Soulsborne games for story anyway?

Shortly, I can't wait for the third installment of The Surge series.

Not a very good souls-like. Game is hard but in an unfair way. Imagine playing dark souls, but you need to parry every enemy attack otherwise youre screwed. Bosses are forgetable. The whole junk collecting stuff got me interested, that we would find many parts of the enemy and combine them with each other. Wouldnt recommend if your tolerance for unfariness is low. Expand

All in all, The Surge 2 is a great game to pick up if you're looking for a more arcade-like take on the Dark Souls formula. It's a fun and engaging game with a solid combat system and enjoyable mechanics, and it's only dragged down by a mediocre story and lackluster environments. With the excellent improvements from The Surge to The Surge 2, the franchise is well on its way to standing tall in the Soulsborne genre. It's well worth playing if you're an aficionado of this genre and don't mind dying a few times.

The core combat loop delivers a unique and very satisfying soulsborne, and the push to an open world is a win. But technical problems and a lack of enemy variety hold The Surge 2 back from greatness . [Issue#168, p.80]

The Surge 2 is a sequel done right. With fluid combat, creative level design, and solid performance you would be hard pressed to not enjoy this title.
